    Daily Sports Roundup: October 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The National League Division Series continue, while the Devils host the Pens, and Monday Night Football takes the field in New Jersey.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

This week's Monday Night Football matchup has Minnesota at the Jets, with the Vikings (1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS) looking to build on last week's 24-10 home win over the Lions. Brett Favre threw for 201 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Vikings in that contest, while Adrian Peterson ran for 160 yards and two scores. The Jets (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) have won three straight games, getting past Buffalo 38-14 on the road last time out. Mark Sanchez threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over the Bills, and LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 133 yards and two scores. Oddsmakers have the Jets pegged as 4-point home favorites for Monday night, with the total set at 38 points.

As well, there are two CFL games on the schedule on Monday for Thanksgiving Day up in Canada: Calgary at Montreal, and British Columbia at Winnipeg. The Alouettes (9-4 SU, 6-7 ATS) are 3.5-point home favorites in that first matchup against the Stampeders (10-3 SU, 9-4 ATS), with the total pegged at 58 points. The Bombers (3-10 SU, 7-6 ATS) are then 3.5-point favorites against the Lions (5-8 SU, 5-8 ATS), with that total set at 52.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It's Game 4 of the Giants/Braves NLDS in Atlanta on Monday night, with San Fran's Madison Bumgarner (7-6, 3.00 ERA) expected to take on Atlanta's Derek Lowe (0-1, 1.69 ERA in the playoffs). Lefthander Bumgarner won his last two starts of the regular season, holding the Diamondbacks and Cubs to one run on 14 hits over those 12 innings of work, while striking out 16 batters. Righthander Lowe lost Game 1 of this series despite giving up just one run on four hits over his 5 1-3 innings of work that day.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are seven games on the National Hockey League schedule for Monday, with the Rangers at the Islanders, Anaheim at St. Louis, Chicago at Buffalo, Colorado at Philadelphia, Ottawa at Washington, Florida at Vancouver, and Pittsburgh at New Jersey. The Penguins gave up two late goals to fall 3-2 to the Canadiens on Saturday night, while the Devils are coming off an ugly 7-2 road loss to the Capitals on Saturday.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

Minnesota Vikings at New York Jets – Jets are up to -4.5 after being as low as -3.5 earlier. The total is up to 38 after opening at around 37.

      Weather to watch

No current weather concerns for Monday’s games.

      Who’s hot

New York Jets are 7-2 ATS in their last nine overall.

New York Rangers are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the New York Islanders.

Washington Capitals are 73-32 in their last 105 home games.

Philadelphia Flyers are 24-8 in their last 32 home games.

      Who’s not

San Francisco Giants are 2-6 in their last eight games in Atlanta.

St. Louis Blues have lost seven of their last 10 games against the Anaheim Ducks.

Pittsburgh Penguins have lost their first two games of the year and are 17-38 in their last 55 meetings with the New Jersey Devils.

Florida Panthers are 1-7-2 in their last 10 games against the Vancouver Canucks.

      Key stat

.813 – New Jersey Devils veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur’s save percentage through the first two games of the season. Brodeur has faced 48 shots over that span, stopping only 39 of those efforts. Brodeur was pulled in the second intermission of Saturday’s 7-2 loss to the Washington Capitals after giving up five goals on 20 shots. The Devils square off against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Brett Favre (elbow), Minnesota Vikings – Favre is dealing with tendinitis in his right throwing elbow and an MRI revealed mild inflammation. The 41-year-old has obviously played through a lot worse in making 288 consecutive starts, but it’s something to keep an eye on moving forward. He is officially listed as probable for Monday’s game against his former team, the New York Jets.

      Game of the day

Minnesota Vikings at New York Jets (-4.5, 38)

      Notable quotable

"Between me and him is a mutual thing. It's more of us competing. I think he gets caught up a little bit with how he talks. I've never said anything about him, good or bad. I still give him his respect, but he hasn't given me mine yet. Sooner or later, I'll get it." – Randy Moss said about the verbal sparring he has been involved with Jets corner Darrelle Revis. Moss will get another crack at lining up on “Revis Island” on Monday night when the Vikings battle the Jets after beating Revis for a one-handed TD grab when he was playing with the New England Patriots earlier this season.

      Tips and notes

New York Jets wideout Santonio Holmes is expected to make his season debut Monday night after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He caught 79 passes last season for more than 1,200 yards and five touchdowns and should be a welcome addition to a passing offense that’s averaging only 171.8 yards per game – 25th in the NFL.

The New Jersey Devils could have a short bench when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins and their former defenseman Paul Martin on Monday. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov suffered a broken nose on Friday when he took a shot just under his visor and Brian Rolston sustained a lower-body injury in the game. Both are questionable for Monday’s game while Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond will likely be suspended after instigating a fight with less than five minutes left in the Devils’ 7-2 loss to Washington.

The San Francisco Giants benched third baseman Pablo Sandoval in favor of Mike Fontenot for Game 3 and they didn’t have to wait long to see the move pay off in a big way. Fontenot tripled in his first at-bat of the postseason in the top of the second inning and then came around to score the game’s first run when Cody Ross reached on an error as the Giants went on to a 3-2 comeback win over Atlanta on Sunday to take a 2-1 series lead. They will likely keep Fontenot in the lineup for Monday’s Game 4.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Some guy in Delaware went 14-0-1 on a parlay card, tying the 49er game; he locked in early at SF +3. Had 49ers covered, he would have cashed in $100,000. Not sure what 14/14 pays off........

-- Cole Hamels closed out the Reds, who had as bad a 3-game series as one team can have; got shut out twice, had four errors in other game.

-- Road team is 4-0 in Tampa-Texas series; Game 5 is Tuesday nite.

-- Dramatics in Atlanta, where Giants pulled out 3-2 win, taking 2-1 lead in series; they try to close Braves out Monday at 7:30. ALCS starts Friday night, NLCS starts Saturday.

-- Heath Slocum won his 4th tournament on PGA Tour Sunday, when he edged Bill Haas by a stroke at McGladrey Classic in Georgia.

-- On October 10, 2010 (10-10-10) starting QBs who wear number 10 (EManning-Collins-Young) went 3-0. All on the road.

        ************************************************** **

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

        13) Whats in the water in Missouri? Chiefs/Rams both started games by trying an onside kick. Neither worked, so both teams trailed 3-0 before they even got the ball. Interesting gambles by two road underdogs.

        12) Chiefs went for it on 4th-and-2 from the Colt 8 on their first drive, but a Cassel pass fell incomplete. Chiefs never did score a touchdown in their 19-9 loss at Indianapolis, their first loss of the season. Now they did do lot better than many folks thought, and figure to contend.

        11) This is the earliest since 1970 that every NFL team has a loss.

        10) Someone explain to me how the 49ers cut Shaun Hill; he's not better than Alex Smith or David Carr??? It says here he is. A lot better.

        9) Teams that won the turnover battle were 9-2 Sunday, with Carolina and Buffalo the losers, which helps explain why they're both 0-5.

        8) Average yards per pass attempt in Chicago-Carolina game:
Bears 1.3, Panthers 1.7. Woody Hayes would have loved this game.

        7) Cincinnati led the Buccaneers 21-14 with 3:00 left to play at home; somehow, Carson Palmer threw two picks in last 2:20, Bucs scored 10 points, and upset the Bengals 24-21. Oh, Palmer threw an awful pick-6 (11 yards) for Tampa Bay's first TD that tied the score 7-7. Not good.

        6) Dallas was minus-3 in turnovers, were penalized 133 yards as they lost 34-27 at home to the Titans. Tennessee's Mariani ran back a kickoff 73 yards to set up the winning score, which puts the Cowboys at 1-3 (0-2 at home). Looks like Dallas won't be playing in the Super Bowl in their very expensive new stadium this February.

        5) Packers outrushed Washington 157-51 but blew a 13-3 fourth quarter lead, losing 16-13 in OT. Crosby's game-winning FG attempt clanked off the left upright. Pack was just 2-13 on third down conversions.

        4) Arizona upset the Saints by scoring two defensive TDs; their only offensive TD came on a 2-yard drive, when QB Hall was crushed while running, fumbled, and an offensive lineman scooped ball up and scored. Offensively-challenged Redbirds are 3-2 and lead the NFC West.

        3) Fifteen (15) QBs were drafted last April; Hall wasn't one of them; he is now the starting quarterback for a first-place team.

        2) Chargers are 2-3 for fifth time in last six years; they're 0-3 on road, despite outgaining opponents by 192-247-227 yards in those losses.

        1) Norv Turner has to fire special teams coach Steve Crosby; Chargers gave up two punt blocks in first 4:33 Sunday, one for a safety, one for a TD, two weeks after Seattle ran two kickoffs back for TDs. How does this guy keep his job? Luckily San Diego is in a weak division.

Madison Bumgarner, San Franciso Giants vs. Derek Lowe, Atlanta Braves

            Madison Bumgarner (7-6, 3.00 ERA)

The San Francisco Giants are putting their faith in a 21-year-old rookie making his postseason debut to pitch them past the Atlanta Braves after taking a 2-1 series lead on Sunday.

“He's got great poise out there and good stuff,” Giants skipper Bruce Bochy said of Bumgarner. “The kid has no fear. He is a young kid that has a great way about how he handles things.”

Bumgarner, who was the 10th overall pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, was called up from Triple-A Fresno in late June and after dropping his first two starts, he rebounded to go 7-4 with a 2.78 ERA for San Francisco. He ended up striking out 84 batters while walking 24 in 111 1-3 innings for the Giants.

Bumgarner hasn’t pitched since Sept. 30, so he’ll be toeing the rubber on 10 days’ rest.

            Derek Lowe (16-12, 4.00 ERA)

Pitching on short rest is nothing new for veteran right-hander Derek Lowe, who will take the mound on three days’ rest as he tries to help his Braves avoid elimination.

This will be the 10th time that Lowe’s thrown on three or fewer days of rest in his career and is 5-1 over those games. Three of those instances occurred in the postseason – one relief appearance and two starts – with Lowe posting a 1-0 record.

Lowe has a 5-6 career record in postseason play with a 3.24 ERA. He took the 1-0 loss in Game 1, but the Giants aren’t concerned about fatigue at this point.

“He only went 5 1/3 innings, and if you subtract the intentional walk, he threw 88 pitches,” Braves manager Bobby Cox told reporters. “He should be good. He’s fired up about it. Even before we started these playoffs, he was politicking for Game 4. He got it.”

Lowe is 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA over his last five starts against the Giants.

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves [TBS | 8:37 PM ET]

GIANTS: San Francisco is 1 win away from their first NLCS since 2002. The Giants have been so successful this year thanks to their starting pitching, and the playoffs have been no exception. San Francisco has been playing meaningful games for quite some time in the National League West division. San Francisco is 43-38 SU this season away from home. The Giants are +15.03 and -3.15 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Young pitcher Madison Bumgarner will make the road start tonight, as he will be pitching for the first time since September 30th. Bumgarner will be facing pressure that he hasn't faced before, in addition to the extra days off. Bumgarner is 7-6 SU this year, with an ERA of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.31 this season. The Giants are 7-2 in their last 9 road games against a team with a winning record. San Francisco is 5-2 in their last 7 Monday games. The Giants are 2-5 in their last 7 games against the National League East.

Giants are 1-5 last 6 Divisional Playoff road games.
Over is 7-3 last 10 Divisional Playoff games.

Key Injuries - C Buster Posey (ribs) is probable.

            Projected Score: 4

BRAVES: (-150, O/U 7) Atlanta is facing elimination, as they trail the Giants 2-1 in their best of 5 series. Legendary coach Bobby Cox could be coaching his final game today in what is sure to be a Hall of Fame career. Atlanta lost 2-3 in Game 3, giving up 2 runs in the top of the 9th to lose the game in heartbreaking fashion. Atlanta has been dominant at home this year, going 56-25 SU there. The Braves are -0.86 and +11.05 units both SU and ATS this season. Derek Lowe will make the home start for the Braves tonight, as he is 16-12 SU this year with an ERA of 4.00 and a WHIP of 1.37 this season. Lowe very well might be the best option for Atlanta to avoid elimination tonight, as he's a crafty veteran that has dealt with pressure before. The Braves are 5-12 in their last 17 playoff home games. Atlanta is 1-4 in their last 5 games against the National League West.

Braves are 15-6 last 21 home games against a team with a winning road record.
Over is 8-1 last 9 Divisional Playoff games.

Key Injuries - RP Billy Wagner (oblique) is out.

Projected Score: 5 (OVER-Total of the Day)

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-145, 7.5)

It didn’t take long for the Atlanta Braves to find out just how important Billy Wagner was to their bullpen. The Braves dropped the veteran closer from their postseason roster after he suffered a strained left oblique on Friday, replacing him with Takashi Saito. Some think that we may have seen Wagner's last pitch in the bigs, but even if he feels better soon, by rule he won't be allowed to play in the next series should the Braves advance.

The 39-year-old, who had 37 saves this year, was watching on when rookies Craig Kimbrel and Mike Dunn combined to blow a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning to give the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 win in Game 3.

"That's a momentum swing," Giants closer Brian Wilson told reporters after finishing the Braves off. "The guys stayed focus. We had 0-2, two outs, base hit up the middle, another hit. I did nothing, actually, tonight. I basically went out and got the final three outs.”

That might just be the momentum swing the Giants needed in this series.

            Pick: Giants

            This Day in Baseball
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 11 in Baseball History...

1911 - The first MVPs are announced and Ty Cobb receives the maximum 64 points. The NL winner is Cubs outfielder Frank Schulte, with Christy Mathewson second. Both winners receive Chalmers automobiles.

1913 - Eddie Plank tossed a two-hitter against the New York Giants to give the Philadelphia Athletics a 3-1 victory and the World Series in five games.

1925 - Walter Johnson wins his third straight World Series contest over two years, 4-0. A three-run home run by Goose Goslin followed by a solo shot by Joe Harris gives the Senators a 4-0 win and 3-1 Series advantage over the Pirates.

1943 - New York's Spud Chandler shut out the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 as the Yankees won the World Series in five games. Chandler gave up 10 hits and stranded 11 runners.

1948 - In Boston, Cleveland nips the Braves 4-3 to take the World Series in six games. Rookie lefty Gene Bearden is the pitching hero in relief.

1967 - Rico Petrocelli's two home runs led the Boston Red Sox in an 8-4 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals and forced a seventh game in the World Series.

1969 - Don Buford's leadoff home run starts a 4-1 Baltimore win over the Mets to open the World Series. Mike Cuellar bests Tom Seaver in what will be New York's only postseason loss of the year.

1971 - Brooks Robinson ties a World Series record by reaching base five straight times on three hits and two walks as Baltimore rolls over Pittsburgh, 11-3. The defending World Champion Orioles hold a 2-0 Series advantage.

1972 - Bob Moose's wild pitch in the ninth inning allowed George Foster to score the winning run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 and captured the NLCS in the fifth game.

1973 - Catfish Hunter throws a five-hitter as Oakland beats Baltimore 3-0 in Game Five to take the AL pennant.

1975 - Boston's Luis Tiant shuts down the Big Red Machine and scores the first run as the Red Sox win the opening game of the 1975 World Series, 6-0.

1977 - The Yankees beat the Dodgers in the opening game of the World Series in 12 innings, 4-3. Willie Randolph doubles and scores the winning run on a single by Paul Blair.

1978 - The Dodgers take a 2-0 World Series lead as Ron Cey drives in all the Dodger runs and Reggie Jackson does the same for the Yankees. Bob Welch saves Burt Hooton's 4-3 win in dramatic fashion by striking out Jackson in the ninth inning.

1979 - Manny Sanguillen's pinch-hit, two-out single in the ninth inning of Game Two breaks a tie as the Pirates win, 3-2, and even the World Series.

1980 - In one of the most exciting and controversial games in playoff history, the Phillies tie the NLCS with a 10-inning 5-3 win over the Astros in Game Four. In the fourth inning, Houston is deprived of an apparent triple play when the umpires rule that pitcher Vern Ruhle traps Garry Maddox's soft line drive. In the sixth, Houston loses a run when Gary Woods leaves the base early on Luis Pujols' would-be sacrifice fly.

1981 - Steve Rogers wins Game Five of the NL East Divisional playoff for Montreal over Philadelphia by twirling a six-hit shutout and knocking in two of his team's runs in a 3-0 victory.

1985 - George Brett's four hits, including two homers, led the Kansas City Royals to 6-5 comeback victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the third game of the ALCS.

1986 - Len Dykstra's two-run home run off Dave Smith with one out in the bottom of the ninth gives the Mets a 6-5 win over the Astros and a 2-1 lead in the NLCS.

1992 - Dennis Eckersley, who saved 51 games for Oakland during the season, surrenders a two-run home run to Roberto Alomar that sends Game Four of the ALCS into extra innings. The Blue Jays go on to win 7-6 in 11 innings and take a 3-1 series edge.

1996 - With the ALCS tied at 1-1 and the game tied at 2-2, Orioles third baseman Todd Zeile fakes a throw and the ball trickles away to allow the go-ahead run to score. Cecil Fielder follows with a home run and the Yankees win, 5-2.

1997 - One of the most bizarre endings in ALCS history, the winning run scores on a botched squeeze play. With Marquis Grissom racing home from third base, Omar Vizquel bunts and misses and the ball trickles a few feet from the plate. Orioles catcher Lenny Webster thinks it's a foul ball and loafs after it as Grissom streaks home for a 2-1 Cleveland win. Baltimore starter Mike Mussina strikes out an LCS record 15 batters in seven innings in the difficult twilight at Jacobs Field, but has nothing to show for it.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at New York Islanders (N/A)

Are the Islanders cursed? The team’s backers have to be asking themselves that question after franchise player John Tavares suffered a concussion in the first period against the Stars on Saturday night.

This is a big deal people. Tavares is a unique talent and concussions aren’t being treated lightly in the NHL any longer, especially not after that scary incident involving Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec.

"He's arguably our best forward, and John's a prolific player that brings a lot of offense to our team," team captain Doug Weight told the Islanders' official website.

It’s a really bad break for the Islanders who are already missing their top defenseman Mark Streit and bruising forward Kyle Okposo.

The Rangers, meanwhile, looked dynamic lighting the lamp six times against the Sabres on Saturday.

                  Pick: Rangers

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils (-140, 5.5)

Expectations are always going to be high for the Penguins as long as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are in the lineup. So that’s why many are surprised by the club’s 0-2 start, with both loses coming at the club’s new arena.

So what’s the deal? The Pens led late in the third period against the Habs, the same team who knocked Pittsburgh out of the playoffs last spring, but Montreal scored two late goals to steal two points and walk away with a 3-2 win.

Some are pointing fingers at goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and his 3.07 goals against average, but everyone knows Sid and Company need to score more than two goals a game to be successful.

It seems like the early absence of center Jordan Staal is hurting a bit more than expected.

The opening few games haven’t gone much better for the Devils. New Jersey grabbed a point in its first game but then got blown out by Washington, 7-2, on Saturday.

Devils coach John MacLean stated the obvious after the game, telling reporters his team had some work to do.

Expect the Pens offense to come alive against the Devils Monday night.

                  Pick: Penguins

Calgary Stampeders at Montreal Alouettes (-3.5, 58)

The Stampeders are coming to Montreal for the second of a home-and-away series with the intention of securing a playoff home game. The Stampeders’ attack embarrassed Montreal’s secondary last week. Henry Burris, Ken-Yon Rambo and Romby Briant really had a blast against the Alouettes defense. Can they repeat at Percival-Molson this Monday?

The Alouettes want to avenge that painful lost but they will go without two key elements: center Paul Lambert (biceps) whose season is over and kicker Damon Duval (torn hamstring). A last minute replacement was hired but Duval’s absence could prove costly against a team as powerful as Calgary. At center, sophomore Luc Brodeur-Jourdain, who has had ups and downs in his second professional season, will be asked to replace Lambert.

                    Pick: Calgary

B.C. Lions at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-3.5, 52)

After a horrendous start, the Lions seem to be back to life, mainly because of their stop unit. On offense, Travis Lulay has done some good work behind center and can also be credited for the Lions resurrection. The hot streak should continue against the Bombers, who’ve lost some key players to injuries and just seem to be jinxed.

Rookie QB Alex Brink will face the Lions. Don’t forget Brinks is the third QB on the Bombers depth chart, behind Buck Pierce (injured) and Steven Jyles. But Winnipeg is desperate and their playoff hopes are fading fast.

                    Pick: Lions

                              Monday, October 11

Wagner's injury killed Braves yesterday. Lowe is on three days' rest for this start; he allowed one run in 5.1 IP in Game 1 of series (96 PT). He is 5-1, 1.25 in his last six starts, 2-1, 2.16 in three starts against the Giants this season. Rookie Bumgarner is 3-2, 1.24 in his last six starts; five of those six starts stayed under the total. Braves' lack of closer is problem.
