Bettors’ best friend: Sunday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The Oakland at Seattle line opened at 148, but it has since dropped to 143.

    Weather to watch

Ravens at Steelers: There is a 40 percent chance of showers.

Bengals at Browns: There is an 80 percent chance of showers and an 18 mph wind is expected.

Broncos at Titans: A 13 mph wind is expected.

Jets at Bills: There is a 40 percent chance of showers and a 15 mph wind is expected.

Texans at Raiders: There is a 20 percent chance of showers and a 13 mph wind is expected.

Redskins at Eagles: A 14 mph wind is expected.

Bears at Giants: There is a 30 percent chance of showers and a 12 mph wind is expected.

    Who’s hot

The Falcons are 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall.

The Packers are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 overall.

The Colts are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games.

The Jets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.

    Who’s not

The Jaguars are 0-5 ATS in their last five against teams with winning SU records.

The Seahawks are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 road games.

The Saints are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 against the NFC.

The Giants are 1-8 ATS in their last nine against teams with winning SU records.

    Key stat

461.3 – Yards of total offense the San Diego Chargers are averaging through three games, more than 44 yards clear of the second most prolific offense in the NFL. The Chargers are going up against an Arizona defense that is 26th overall, including second to last against the run.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

New York Giants’ defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka went from fully participating in practice all week to being out—possibly for the year—in the blink of an eye. A bulging disc in Kiwanuka’s neck will definitely keep him out of Sunday’s game against the Bears and likely much longer, although the timetable has not yet been determined.

Just missing him against Chicago is bad enough for the Giants. They would like to have all hands on deck in an attempt to stymie Jay Cutler, who is third in the NFL with a 109.7 quarterback rating and first in the league with a yards-per-attempt average of 9.56.

    Biggest game on the slate

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers (-1, 34)

    Notable quotable

“I've always said this is just a normal game. And in this situation for us, obviously, it's a must win. Coming off of two losses like we've had these past two weeks, no matter who we're playing, we have to come out and be able to execute and come out and win by any means necessary.” – Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb on returning to Philadelphia for the first time in an opposing uniform.

    Tips and notes

New England running back Fred Taylor has been ruled out for Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins due to a toe injury. BenJarvus Green-Ellis will get the nod in Taylor's absence, and Green-Ellis has not started an NFL game since November 13, 2008. He did, however, fill in nicely last week as a reserve with 16 carries for 98 yards and a score.

The Texans are a risky proposition this week with star wide receiver’s status completely up in the air. He missed practice on both Thursday and Friday. Coach Gary Kubiak did not sound particularly enthused, either. “To say that he’s a ‘no,’ I don't see it that way,” Kubiak said. “Obviously, he’s (more sore) ... than he was last week at this time or would've taken in some of the practice. He did run some. It's not like he didn't do anything.”

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Edmonton Eskimos (+1, 50.5)

DeAndra Cobb seems to be back on track after a tough start and now he is the fourth-best ball carrier in the league.

Veteran SB Kamau Peterson was back at practice for the Eskimos and could be available this Sunday. Linebacker Maurice Lloyd, RB Calvin McCarty, DB Randy Drew and DE Kai Ellis should also be back in the lineup. Slotback Kelly Campbell still remains doubtful as well as DB Lawrence Gordon.

The Tiger-Cats have better offensive production than the Eskimos, as well as a more efficient defense. In 12 games, Hamilton scored 295 points and gave up only 318 while the Eskimos only scored 225 and allowed 378.

      Pick: Edmonton

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Slumping

Anibal Sanchez, Florida Marlins (12-12, 3.62 ERA)

The Marlins right-hander has dropped three starts in a row posting an ERA north of 6.00 over 17 innings of work. Sanchez didn’t perform badly in his last start, allowing three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings versus Atlanta. However, a lack of run support kept him in the loss column.

        Ryan Rowland-Smith, Seattle Mariners (1-10, 6.90 ERA)

After struggling as a starter, Rowland-Smith was relegated to the bullpen. But after the team shut down ace Felix Hernandez, the lefty was given the ball in the season finale. I mean, what can go wrong? Rowland-Smith is 0-1 with a massive 13.19 ERA in his last three appearances as a starter. He didn’t allow a run in 1 2/3 innings of work out of the bullpen last Wednesday.

Mat Latos, San Diego Padres (14-9, 2.92 ERA)

The fate of the Padres is in Latos' shaky hands Sunday. The team’s ace has struggled in the second half of the season and hasn’t won a start since September 7. He’s 0-4 since but is coming off a solid start in which he gave up just two runs on seven hits in just under six innings of work versus the Cubs. Latos is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA against the Giants for his career.

        Debuting

Justin Germano, Cleveland Indians (0-2, 2.16 ERA)

While none of Sunday’s starters qualify as “streaking," the Tribe’s pitching move should get the attention of bettors. Cleveland will start righty Justin Germano, who has pitched in 22 games as a reliever, due to Wednesday’s double-header. Germano made 23 starts for the Padres in 2008, posting a 7-10 record, and has made seven Triple-A starts this season. He is only expected to go three innings versus the White Sox.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros (-138, NA)

The Cubs were so bad this year that Lou Piniella could not even make it through the season. But, surprisingly, they are not limping toward the finish line. Instead, they took three of four from San Diego earlier this week and all but eliminated the Padres from NL West title contention.

A big reason for the late success is an on-fire bullpen. After Friday’s 2-0 shutout win over Houston, Chicago’s relievers had pitched 10 scoreless innings for the week while giving up just two hits and striking out 14. The bullpen’s scoreless streak hit 22 1/3 innings over the last eight games.
“There's a lot that goes into their success, and most of it is due to their maturation and handling the roles we're putting them in,” interim manager Mike Quade told the Chicago Sun-Times. “There's nothing like having a good bullpen when you're managing a club.”

Starter Ryan Dempster imploded imploded against San Francisco on August 23, but in three of his past four starts he has pitched a combined 21 innings and given up just two runs. Another start like that and the Cubs’ ‘pen should be able to take care of business the rest of the way against the Astros, who are one of the coldest teams in baseball.

        Pick: Cubs

Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners (143, 7.5)

Felix Hernandez’s resume for the American League Cy Young Award is complete. The Mariners have scratched the King for Sunday’s game against Oakland due to his innings count and Seattle’s obvious lack of having anything to play for.

“He leads the league in so many categories,” Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik told The Olympian. “Is one more start going to make that much of a difference? If you are a true baseball person, and you look at what he’s done this year, is that one extra outing going to mean that much?”

Well, it will mean a lot in terms of the outcome of Sunday’s game. Instead of the King, it will be none other than Ryan Rowland-Smith, who sports a 13.19 ERA in his last three starts. For the A’s, Dallas Braden is coming off two quality starts as he looks to cap off his perfect-game year in style.

        Pick: Athletics

        This Day in Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 3 in Baseball History...

1897 - Cap Anson closed out a remarkable 27-year career that started in the National Association in 1871. He hit two home runs against St. Louis. At 46, he was the oldest player to homer in the majors.

1904 - Christy Mathewson strikes out 16 Cards in a 3-1 Giants victory. Big Six's 16 strikeouts establishes a new record as he finishes the game in one hour and 15 minutes.

Joe Jackson has two hits and Chick Gandil drives in two runs as the White Sox cut Cincinnati's World Series lead to 2-1. Cuban Dolf Luque becomes the first Latin American player to appear in a World Series game, pitching one inning of relief for the Reds.

1920 - In a 16-7 win over the White Sox, Browns first baseman George Sisler gets his 257th hit of the season to set a major league record. He also hurls a scoreless ninth inning in relief for St. Louis.

1926 - After the Yankees score twice in the second, Grover Alexander sets down the last 21 batters, striking out 10 in the second game of the World Series. Billy Southworth and shortstop Tommy Thevenow collect three hits each for a 6-2 St. Louis win.

1934 - Dizzy Dean wins the opening game of the World Series 8-3. Detroit manager Mickey Cochrane holds back his ace, Schoolboy Rowe, and veteran Alvin Crowder is ineffective as Joe Medwick homers in a 4-for-4 day. The Tigers make five errors.

1947 - Bill Bevens of the Yankees held the Dodgers hitless until two were out in the ninth, then pinch-hitter Cookie Lavagetto doubled in two runs for a 3-2 Brooklyn victory in the fourth game of the World Series.

1968 - Detroit's Mickey Lolich evens the World Series in Game Two with a six-hitter and his first major-league home run to defeat St. Louis, 8-1.

1971 - Bob Robertson's three home runs led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 9-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants, tying the National League playoffs at 1-1.

1972 - Roric Harrison homers as Baltimore beats Cleveland 4-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. With the DH rule on the horizon, it will be the last home run hit by an AL pitcher until interleague play 25 years later.

1974 - Frank Robinson becomes the first black manager in the major leagues, as the Indians name him to replace Ken Aspromonte for the 1975 season.

1976 - Hank Aaron singles in his last major-league at bat and drives in his 2,297th run as the sixth-place Brewers lose to the Tigers, 5-2.

1981 - The Brewers and Expos clinch their first-ever postseason appearances. Milwaukee beats Detroit 2-1 to wrap up the second-half title in the AL East, while Montreal edges the Mets 5-4 to win the NL East's second playoff spot.

1990 - Willie McGee became the first player to win a batting title in a league he didn't finish the season in. McGee, who had a .335 average when St. Louis traded him to Oakland on Aug. 28, won his second National League crown when Dave Magadan of the New York Mets failed to catch him on the season's final day.

1993 - The Toronto Blue Jays became the first team in American League history to have teammates finish 1-2-3 in the batting race. John Olerud led the league with a .363 batting average. Paul Molitor finished at .332 and Roberto Alomar closed the year at .326.

1993 - The Giants need to beat the Dodgers on the final day of the season to force a one-game playoff with the Braves for the NL West title, but the Dodgers have other plans. LA rips the Giants, 12-1. At 103-59, San Francisco becomes the first team since the 1954 Yankees to win that many games and not play in the postseason.

1995 - Tony Pena homers to left field in the 13th inning to give the Indians a 5-4 win over the Red Sox in the first game of the Division Series. It is Cleveland's first postseason victory since 1948.

1997 - The Braves and Marlins both sweep the Division Series. The Braves, behind a three-hitter by John Smoltz, complete the sweep of Houston with a 4-1 win. The Marlins ride a grand slam by Devon White to a 6-2 win and sweep of San Francisco.

            Daily Sports Roundup: October 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NFL stages its Week 4 contests, while the Sprint Cup Series races in Kansas, and baseball closes out its regular-season schedule.

            Colliding on the gridiron . . .

An AFC North clash between the Ravens and Steelers in Pittsburgh highlights the NFL's afternoon schedule for Sunday. The Ravens (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) are coming off a 24-17 win over Cleveland in which Joe Flacco went 22-of-31 for 262 yards passing with three touchdown strikes. Anquan Boldin caught eight passes for 142 yards and three scores for Baltimore in that win. The Steelers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) thrashed Tampa Bay 38-13 last time out, with Charlie Batch going 12-of-17 for 186 yards passing with three TD strikes. The Steelers are pegged as 2.5-point home favorites, with the total sitting at 34.5 points.

Making up the rest of the National Football League's schedule for Sunday: San Francisco at Atlanta (-7), the Jets (-6) at Buffalo, Carolina at New Orleans (-13.5), Denver at Tennessee (-6.5), Cincinnati (-3) at Cleveland, Detroit at Green Bay (-14), Seattle (-1.5) at St. Louis, Indianapolis (-7) at Jacksonville, Houston (-3) at Oakland, Arizona at San Diego (-8.5), Washington at Philadelphia (-5.5), and Chicago at the Giants (-3.5). The Bears (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) remained undefeated by beating Green Bay 20-17 last week, while the Giants (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) are coming off a 29-10 loss to Tennessee. Oddsmakers have the total for that Sunday night matchup set at 44 points.

There's also one CFL game on tap for Sunday, with Hamilton at Edmonton. The Tiger-Cats (6-6 SU, 6-6 ATS) are 1-point road favorites versus the Eskimos (3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS).

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The last day of the American League's regular-season schedule on Sunday has Detroit at Baltimore, Cleveland at the White Sox, Tampa Bay at Kansas City, Toronto at Minnesota, the Angels at Texas, Oakland at Seattle, and the Yankees at Boston. The Red Sox are slated to send John Lackey (13-11, 4.47 ERA) to the mound in their last game of the year; righthander Lackey picked up a no-decision against the White Sox in his most recent outing, surrendering two runs on three hits in six innings in that contest.

Around the National League on Sunday afternoon it'll then be Pittsburgh at Florida, Washington at the Mets, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, the Cubs at Houston, Colorado at St. Louis, Arizona at the Dodgers, San Diego at San Francisco, and Philadelphia at Atlanta. The Padres, Giants, and Braves are all still jostling for a playoff spot; San Francisco enters play on Sunday with a one-game lead on San Diego in the NL West, while Atlanta and San Diego are tied for top spot in the NL Wild Card race.

            Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series takes on Kansas Speedway on Sunday afternoon in the third race of the Chase, the Price Chopper 400. Jimmie Johnson, who took the checkered flag last time out in the AAA 400, is the oddsmakers' 7/2 favorite for Sunday, with Kyle Busch at 7/1 odds to get the win, and two-time Kansas winner Jeff Gordon at 8/1 odds. Tony Stewart, the defending Price Chopper 400 champion, and Carl Edwards are both at 10/1 odds to get the victory, with Denny Hamlin, Greg Biffle, and Kevin Harvick at 12/1. Kurt Busch (14/1) and Jeff Burton (16/1) round out the top contenders.

MGM's odds to win the Stanley Cup this season............

              -- Vancouver Canucks 6-1

              -- Chicago Blackhawks 11-2

              -- San Jose Sharks 5-1

              -- Pittsburgh Penguins 9-2

              -- Washington Capitals 4-1

              *********************************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday.....

              13) LSU coach Les Miles is the luckiest man alive; seriously, no one can dodge a disaster better than The Hat. LSU butchered the last 30 seconds of its game against Tennessee so incredibly badly that I mumbled "He's going to get fired" as Jordan Jefferson dove after a botched shotgun snap that appeared to clinch a huge upset win for Tennessee in Baton Rouge.

But Tennessee had too many men on the field. Not 12 men. They had 13 men on the field!!!! Bayou Bengals got another play, scored a TD and escaped the plucky Volunteers with a sloppy, ugly 16-14 win.

Can someone please explain to me how a program like LSU doesn't have a decent QB? They have Philip Rivers' little brother coming in next year, but these two kids they have now are simply not SEC-level QBs.

              12) Lets just say that Tennessee coach Derek Dooley wasn't too happy as the last minute unfolded; pity the poor soul who had to interview him on the radio after the game. He threw his headset twice in the last minute of the game, with Aroldis Chapman-like velocity. Not his happiest day.

              11) Washington 32, USC 31. Jake Locker won't win the Heisman, but he will lead Washington to its first bowl since '02, and he'll eventually be a good NFL quarterback. He passed for 310 yards, ran for 110 more as the Huskies upset USC for the second consecutive season.

              10) Northwestern is 5-0 after nipping Minnesota 29-28 in Twin Cities; they survived three turnovers and 10 penalties to get the road win.

              9) NC State led Virginia Tech 17-7 at half, but Hokes ran kickoff back for a TD to start 3rd quarter and wound up scoring 34 points in second half of their 41-30 win in Raleigh.

              8) Tulane 17, Rutgers 14. Well, at least UConn beat Vanderbilt. Tough times for the increasingly shaky Big East.

              7) Speaking of tough times, Georgia lost its fourth straight game, 29-27 at Colorado. Even AJ Green's return couldn't save the Dawgs here. He doesn't play defense. Big win for Colorado's Dan Hawkins.

              6) Arizona State is 0-3 vs D-I opponents (they beat two I-AA teams), but Sun Devils lost by a point at Wisconsin, 3 points at Oregon State, and they hung 31 points on unbeaten Oregon despite turning ball over seven times. ASU is going to start winning games pretty soon.

              5) Air Force now has leg up on winning Commander-in-Chief trophy as the Falcons ended a 7-game losing streak to Navy with a 14-6 win. Navy actually threw 18 passes in the game, but only completed six.

              4) Bo Schembechler must be spinning in his grave after Indiana threw for 480 yards in Michigan's dramatic 42-35 win at improved Indiana. Senior QB Chappell converted on 11 of 19 third down plays for the Hoosiers. When was last time Michigan gave up 480 passing yards in a game?

              3) If he stays healthy, Denard Robinson wins the Heisman going away.

              2) Temple is pretty good; they were down 21-13 at half in trap game at Army (they played Penn State last week) but rallied to win 42-35. In previous years, Temple never won games like this. Now Temple has to worry that some big school is going to hire Al Golden away; he's done that a good a job with the formerly-horrendous Owls.

              1) I'm serious about this Les Miles thing; if you ever see him out in a convenience store, ask him to hold his hand on your head while you buy lottery tickets; the man is lucky, kind of like Vince Dooley was lucky when he was coaching Georgia. Miles' good fortune made a tough luck loser out of Tennessee coach Dooley Saturday; thats Vince's son.
