Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

    Weather to watch

Detroit Tigers at Baltimore Orioles – 100 percent chance of rain. Winds at 22 mph blowing eastward toward third base.
Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets – 90 percent chance of rain. Winds at 21 mph blowing from the east toward third base.

    Who’s hot

Chicago Cubs have won 10 of their last 14.
Detroit Tigers have won nine of their last 12 meetings with the Baltimore Orioles.
Cincinnati Reds are 13-4 in their last 17 home games.
Colorado Rockies are 11-1 in their last 12 meetings with the St. Louis Cardinals.

    Who’s not

Texas A&M is 17-36-1 ATS over their last 54 road games.
Arizona Diamondbacks are 15-40 in their last 55 road games.
Chicago White Sox are 1-7 in their last eight home games.
Toronto Blue Jays are 4-10 in their last 14 road games.
Oakland Athletics are 7-19 in their last 26 games at Seattle.

    Key stat

4.55 – the New York Yankees’ team ERA in September, which is up from their season ERA of 4.00. The Yanks are just 12-14 this month and endured tough starts from CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Andy Pettitte. They had a 2 ½-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays but dropped five of six after that. They clinched their 15th playoff berth in 16 seasons with a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mario Manningham (concussion), New York Giants – The wide receiver complained of concussion symptoms Sunday night, but the team wasn’t sure how serious his concussion was initially. Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News tweeted that Manningham was still experiencing symptoms on Wednesday, so his status for Sunday night’s game when the Giants host the Chicago Bears as 4-point underdogs appears to be in doubt. Manningham has been New York’s most consistent receiver this season with 14 catches for 238 yards and a touchdown. Victor Cruz will likely see some snaps if Manningham is out.

    Game of the day

Texas A&M at No. 24 Oklahoma State

    Notable quotable

"It is one of the biggest mysteries in all of college football. You stand there on a Friday night and watch the entire stadium packed for Midnight Yell practice and the 12th Man and all of that. And they're the second-biggest program in the state of Texas. How can they not transform that into success on the field?" – Analyst Lee Corso on Texas A&M’s struggles. The Aggies haven’t finished a season ranked in the Top 25 since 1999.

    Notes and tips

Jake Delhomme (high ankle sprain) could be back in the mix at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns this week as they host the Cincinnati Bengals as 3-point underdogs. He didn’t practice Wednesday, but is expected back on the field Thursday or Friday and to be fit to go Sunday – should Eric Mangini decide that Delhomme’s a better choice. He had a 59.2 quarterback rating in a Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay before hitting the shelf, going 20-of-37 for 227 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

New Jersey Nets team officials say that the rumored four-team trade that would have brought Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey is finally dead. The Star-Ledger reports that two separate team sources confirmed that the Anthony deal wasn’t going through and that the club had set a deadline of today for the Denver Nuggets. The two teams had been in serious negotiations for a few weeks and word has it New Jersey had offered just about everyone on its roster save for center Brook Lopez.

The Montreal Canadiens have finally decided on a new captain. Brian Gionta was named the franchise’s 28th captain on Tuesday after the team went without one last season. Gionta had 21 goals and 46 points in 61 games last year. The Canadiens are 5-3-2 in preseason play and are priced at +3000 to win the Stanley Cup this year.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Chris Volstad (11-9, 4.93 ERA), Florida Marlins

Florida has won six of Volstad’s last seven starts and the 6-foot-8 right-hander is coming off back-to-back shutouts after suffering through two tough outings before that. Volstad fired a complete-game five-hitter on Sept. 20 in booking a 4-0 win over the Cardinals and then followed that up with 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball in a 4-0 victory over Milwaukee.

      Slumping

Barry Enright (6-6, 3.73 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

Enright has been streaky lately. He won three straight starts, allowing just three total runs, between Aug. 21-Sept. 1, but has lost four consecutive outings since then. During the skid he gave up at least five runs in three of those games with only five total strikeouts. Enright gave up two earned runs over eight innings in a tough 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers the last time he took the hill.

Chris Carpenter (15-9, 3.31 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

Carpenter is usually stuck up higher in this piece in the Streaking section, but the big right-hander has dropped four consecutive starts and five of his last six heading into Wednesday’s start against Colorado. He lasted just four innings in his last outing against the Chicago Cubs, giving up five runs – two earned – while walking four.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Toronto at Minnesota (-155, 8)

The Minnesota Twins continue to prep their lineup for the postseason as they host the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. The club sent Jim Thome (back) and J.J. Hardy (knee) back to Minnesota earlier this week so that they could do their rehab work at Target Field, while Joe Mauer is plotting his return any day now.
Mauer has been out since jamming his knee on Sept. 19 and could return in a limited basis as the team’s DH before he sets up behind the plate again. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire expects Thome, Hardy, and Mauer all to get back in the lineup before the team’s final series of the regular season. Until then, they’ll play the backups and hope their big three gets healthy in a hurry.

      Pick: Jays

Chicago Cubs at San Diego (-155, 7.5)

The record doesn’t lie: Chicago has been a much better team since Mike Quade took over as interim manager from Lou Piniella last month, going 21-11. Quade has done a great job with a team that went into full-out sell mode at the trade deadline and has also had to deal with a couple serious injuries down the stretch to Tyler Colvin and Geovany Soto.

“He's done a great job and I hope that he's here longer than just this year," Ryan Dempster told the Chicago Tribune. "I hope he's managing for us next year because he deserves it. He's done everything they've asked, and everyone in here really likes him."

      Pick: Over

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 30 in Baseball History...

1927 - Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season in the eighth inning off Tom Zachary to lead the New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Washington Senators.

1928 - In Washington's 9-1 win over the Browns, Goose Goslin gets two hits for the third day in a row to edge Browns outfielder Heinie Manush .379 to .378 for his only batting title in an 18-year career.

1934 - Dizzy Dean beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-0, for his 30th victory of the year as the St. Louis Cardinals clinched the National League pennant.

1936 - In the World Series opener, Carl Hubbell scatters seven hits and limits the Yankees to a solo home run by George Selkirk. The Giants take a decisive 6-1 win.

1945 - Hank Greenberg's grand-slam home run in the ninth inning on the final day of the season beats the St. Louis Browns 6-3 and clinches the American League pennant for the Detroit Tigers. Virgil Trucks, discharged three days earlier from the Navy, is the starter, with Hal Newhouser relieving in the fifth.

1947 - In the first televised World Series, the New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 5-3 in the opening game.

1949 - Ralph Kiner hits his 54th homer and 16th in September, as the Pirates beat Herm Wehmeier and the Reds 3-2. The monthly total eclipses Cy Williams' 1923 National League mark.

1951 - Jackie Robinson homered in the 14th inning to give the Brooklyn Dodgers a 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, tying the New York Giants for first place in the National League and forcing a playoff.

1954 - With lefty Johnny Antonelli going the distance, the Giants defeat Early Wynn and the Indians 3-1 in Game two of the World Series. Dusty Rhodes drives in all the Giants' runs with a pinch-hit single and a solo home run. Cleveland's only score is a first-pitch home run by leadoff hitter Al Smith.

1955 - Johnny Podres defeats Bob Turley, who fails to last two innings as the Dodgers win Game three of the World Series over the Yankees 8-3.

1956 - White Sox hurler Jim Derrington becomes the youngest pitcher in modern history to start a game. He loses to Kansas City 7-6 at the age of 16 years and 10 months.

1962 - Willie Mays homered to give the San Francisco Giants a 2-1 victory over the Houston Colt. 45s in the season's final day. That, coupled with the Los Angeles Dodgers' 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, forced a playoff for the National League pennant. The Giants won in three games.

1971 - The Senators, in their final game in Washington, hold a 7-5 lead over the Yankees with two outs in the ninth. Fans then swarm onto the field, causing the game to be forfeited to the Yanks.

1972 - Roberto Clemente doubled off Jon Matlack during Pittsburgh's 5-0 victory over the New York Mets. The hit was the 3,000th and last for the Pirates star right fielder, who was killed in a plane crash during the offseason.

1978 - The Phillies overcome a first-inning grand slam by Willie Stargell to beat the Pirates 10-8 and finally clinch the National League East title. Winning pitcher Randy Lerch contributes two home runs to his cause. The loss snaps the Pirates' streak of 24 straight wins at Three Rivers Stadium.

1980 - A's outfielder Rickey Henderson sets the American League single-season stolen base record with his 98th in a 5-1 win over the White Sox, breaking Ty Cobb's record of 96 set in 1915. Henderson will finish the season with one-hundred stolen bases.

1981 - In the last major-league game at Minnesota's Metropolitan Stadium, Kansas City clinches at least a tie for the American League West second-half title with a 5-2 win over the Twins. Next season, the Twins will play in the brand-new Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.

1984 - California's Mike Witt pitched a 1-0 perfect game against the Texas Rangers.

1988 - Orel Hershiser of the Los Angeles Dodgers broke Don Drysdale's record of 58 consecutive scoreless innings by shutting out San Diego for 10 innings. The Padres won in the 16th inning, 2-1.

1988 - Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth for the second consecutive start, and finished with a 4-0 one-hitter over the Baltimore Orioles. Stieb faced the minimum 26 batters until Jim Trabor lined a single down the right-field line about 3 feet from the glove of first baseman Fred McGriff.

1989 - Nolan Ryan strikes out 13 Angels in a 2-0 three-hitter to raise his season total to 301. It is his sixth 300-strikeout season but his first since 1977.

1990 - The White Sox beat Seattle 2-1 in the last game played at historic Comiskey Park, which is to be torn down after eighty seasons of major-league ball. Chicago will play next season at the new Comiskey Park located across the street.

1992 - George Brett became the 18th player to get 3,000 hits in the Kansas City Royals' 4-0 win over the California Angels.

1995 - Albert Belle of the Cleveland Indians hit his 50th home run of the season and became the first to hit 50 homers and 50 doubles in the same season.

1997 - Tim Raines, Derek Jeter and Paul O'Neill hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning against Cleveland, making the New York Yankees the first team to hit three straight homers in a postseason game. O'Neill's homer made it 8-6, the final score of the Yankees' Game 1 victory in the American League division series.

1998 - John Smoltz became the winningest pitcher in postseason history, allowing only five hits in 7 2/3 innings as the Atlanta Braves cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of their National League divisional playoff series.

          Daily Sports Roundup: September 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Texas A&M battles Oklahoma State on the gridiron, while the Giants host the Diamondbacks, and the Rays begin a series with the Royals.

          Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football game on the schedule for Thursday, with Texas A&M at Oklahoma State. The Aggies (3-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) slipped past Florida International 27-20 at home last week, with Jerrod Johnson going just 11-of-31 for 194 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. The Cowboys (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) pounded Tulsa 61-28 at home last time out, as Brandon Weeden completed 23 of 32 pass attempts for 409 yards with six touchdown strikes. Oddsmakers have Oklahoma State pegged as the 3-point home favorite for Thursday's matchup, with the total for the contest at 67 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

There are six games on the American League schedule for Thursday, with Detroit at Baltimore, the Angels at Texas, Toronto at Minnesota, Boston at the White Sox, Oakland at Seattle, and Tampa Bay at Kansas City. The Rays are slated to send Matt Garza (15-9, 3.92 ERA) to the mound on Thursday, while the Royals counter with Zack Greinke (9-14, 4.23 ERA). Righthander Garza beat the Mariners in his most recent trip to the mound, giving up just one run on eight hits over his seven innings of work. Righthander Greinke will be looking to bounce back from a bad outing against the Indians in which he surrendered seven runs on 11 hits over just 3 2-3 innings in a loss.

There are also six games on the National League's Thursday schedule, with the Cubs at San Diego, Milwaukee at the Mets, Houston at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Florida, Colorado at St. Louis, and Arizona at San Francisco. The Diamondbacks' Barry Enright (6-6, 3.73 ERA) will take on the Giants' Madison Bumgarner (6-6, 3.06 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Enright was tagged with his fourth straight loss last time out, giving up two runs on five hits over eight innings of work against the Dodgers. Lefthander Bumgarner blanked the Cubs over seven innings in a win in his last outing.

-- Atlanta covered 12 of its last 17 home games.

-- Pittsburgh covered 12 of last 15 as a divisional underdog.

-- 49ers are 6-1-1 in last eight games as a road underdog.

-- Colts covered eight of last ten road games.

-- Jets are 2-8-1 vs spread as a favorite in divisional games.

            **********************************************

Thursday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13.......

These are my top 10 college football teams, plus three other teams that caught my eye last weekend..........
-- UAB-- Lost first game 32-31 after leading 21-12 at half; trailed 23-7 at half in both their last two games, upsetting Troy 34-33 at home, losing in OT at Tennessee, 32-29. Blazers play interesting games.

-- BYU-- Outscored 38-3 in second half of last three games; not sure if their move to football independence will be profitable, and unless they start winning more games, we'll never find out. Playing a freshman QB i no way to get to a big bowl game.

-- Florida-- Gators are 7-0 against spread as a road dog since 2003; they are getting nine points this weekend at Alabama. .

            10) LSU-- Twins' Michael Cuddyer has come to bat with 497 runners on base this year, 18 more than anyone else in major leagues this season.

            9) Auburn-- Delwyn Young has come to bat with a runner on third base 45 times this season; Alex Rodriguez 42 times, Carlos Gonzalez 39.

            8) Oklahoma-- Top three major leaguers (with 250+ AB) in terms of the percentage of runners they've driven in this season: 1) Carlos Gonzalez, 22.5% 2) Alex Rodriguez 21.8% 3) Troy Tulowitzki 20.1%.

            7) Stanford-- Top three major leaguers (with 250+ AB) in terms of the percentage of runners they've driven in from 3rd base in '10: 1) Lastings Milledge 57.5% 2) Wes Helms 56.7% 3) ASanchez 56.5%.

            6) Nebraska-- Tampa Bay Rays had chance to clinch playoff spot both Monday (12,446) and Tuesday (17,891); they let everyone in for free on Wednesday, and wound up with angry people who paid to park but got locked out of a totally-filled Trop. Go figure.

            5) TCU-- White Sox' Gordon Beckham (39 RBI) has more RBI from the #9 spot in order than any other #9 hitter in major leagues.

            4) Oregon-- Top on-base percentage of leadoff hitters with 300+ ABs:
            1) Furcal, .371, 2) Weeks .361 3) Suzuki .360.

            3) Ohio State-- Carlos Gonzalez has 76 RBI at home, tops in MLB, but is tied for 45th in RBI on the road (41).

            2) Boise State-- Haven't lost a home game wearing blue jerseys since '00; lost a bowl game at home in '05, but wore white jerseys that day.

            1) Alabama-- Tide played Florida in last two SEC title games; they play Gators at home this week. Bama gave up 357 passing yards last week at Arkansas, but won't face another QB like Mallett until bowl game.

RAYS: (-130, O/U 7.5) Tampa Bay has clinched a playoff berth, but there is still plenty at stake as we enter the final weekend of the regular season. Tampa is still playing for both the American League East division title, as well as the overall best record in the American League. With so much still at stake, the Rays are likely to be focused and motivated against the Royals. The Rays are 94-63 SU this season, including 45-32 SU on the road. Tampa is +5.52 and -3.17 units both SU and on the RL this year. Matt Garza will make the road start today, as he is 15-9 SU with an ERA of 3.92 and a WHIP of 1.26 this season. ROYALS: Kansas City is ending their season in a very familiar place, at the bottom of the American League Central division. This was supposed to be the year the Royals made a quantum leap, but it simply didn't happen. Kansas City is 65-92 SU this year, including 36-40 SU at home. The Royals are -8.46 and -8.12 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Ace Zack Greinke will make his final start of the season today.
