Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

    Weather to watch

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians – 40 percent chance of showers. Winds blowing in from right field at 12 mph.
Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals – 80 percent chance of rain and thunder. Winds blowing in from right field at 13 mph.
Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves – 80 percent chance of rain and thunder.
Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets – 60 percent chance of thundershowers. Winds blowing in from right-center at 11 mph.

    Who’s hot

Green Bay Packers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 against NFC North opponents.
Philadelphia Phillies are 17-4 in their last 21 road games.
Detroit Tigers have won seven of their last eight overall.
Atlanta Braves are 47-19 in their last 66 home games.
Chicago Cubs are 14-3 in their last 17 road games.

    Who’s not

Baltimore Orioles are 6-20 in their last 26 Monday games.
Seattle Mariners are 4-10 in their last 14 meetings with Texas.
Kansas City Mariners are 0-8 in their last eight Monday games.
Pittsburgh Pirates are 6-45 in their last 51 road games.
Los Angeles Dodgers are 4-10 in their last 14 road games.

    Key stat

121.2 – Jay Cutler’s quarterback rating through two games for the Chicago Bears, which leads the league and is 0.1 points higher than Peyton Manning’s rating. Cutler has thrown five touchdowns to just one interception so far in Chicago’s new Mike Martz offense.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Chad Clifton (knee) and Daryn Colledge (knee), Green Bay Packers – Green Bay was worried it might be without two staring offensive lineman in Clifton and Colledge, but both are now listed as probable and should play. They both missed practice time last week and will need to be in top form with Green Bay already looking to backup running back Brandon Jackson to carry the load with Ryan Grant out. Jackson managed just 29 yards against the Buffalo Bills last week.

    Game of the day

Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears (+3, 46)

    Notable quotable

"My position was I would never sign another place and leave the White Sox for the Cubs because of the respect for Jerry. But if Jerry is leaving me? I'm not leaving them, they are leaving me. Then, I have a choice to make. Everything is out there.
"As soon as you get divorced, you are free to do whatever you want. Yes, I will, not because I say I'm going there, but because they don't want me. Before I say it, I'm not going to leave this place just to punch you guys in the nose. But if you don't want me and someone else wants me, I have to make the decision." – Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen on whether he’d consider managing the Cubs if the White Sox cut him loose.

    Tips and notes

The New Orleans Saints didn’t waste any time jumping into the kicker controversy after Garrett Hartley missed a 29-yard field goal in overtime against the Atlanta Falcons, which would have won the game. NBC’s Peter King reports the Saints will audition kickers this week after Atlanta kicked a game-winning field goal of its own to win 27-24 as 3-point underdogs.

Josh Hamilton may have found a way to help out his ailing ribs. Instead of icing the area to calm back spasms he went with heat and it appeared to help. Hamilton got the idea from talking to other players like Jacoby Ellsbury, who have suffered from similar injuries. There is still no timetable for Hamilton’s return, but he’s still hoping to be ready for the playoffs.

It doesn’t look like the San Francisco Giants are going to shuffle their rotation this week in preparation for what might be a showdown series with the San Diego Padres beginning Friday. Right now, Tim Lincecum is scheduled to start in the club’s series finale against Arizona. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that a rotation change hadn’t been considered, but that the team will weigh all of its options for the stretch run during Monday’s off day.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Roy Halladay (20-10, 2.53 ERA) Philadelphia Phillies

Halladay heads into Monday’s start against the Washington Nationals riding a four-game winning streak. His last win, a 5-3 victory over Atlanta in which he gave up three runs over seven innings, made him Philadelphia’s first 20-game winner since Steve Carlton hit that mark in 1982. He has thrown 241 2/3 innings this season, so Philadelphia may keep a close eye on his pitch count.

Carlos Zambrano (9-6, 3.56 ERA) Chicago Cubs

Zambrano hasn’t lost a start since rejoining the starting rotation on Aug. 24, going 5-0 with a no-decision in his last outing against the San Francisco Giants. He definitely pitched well enough to win that one too, throwing six scoreless innings while striking out eight in a 1-0 loss. Zambrano did walk five batters in that game, which is a little concerning after his serious control problems earlier in the season.

      Slumping

Armando Galarraga (4-7, 4.44 ERA) Detroit Tigers

Galarraga hasn’t won a game in six starts, dating back to a 4-3 loss to Kansas City on Aug. 24. He has four no-decisions over the slump but has lost each of his last two, giving up 12 combined runs over nine innings. He allowed five runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings against the Royals the last time he took the mound, walking five while striking out four.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado (-185, 8.5)

There are rumors floating around again that the Colorado Rockies might be guilty of doctoring baseballs to take full advantage of the thin Colorado air. San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum went vocal about rejecting a ball in Friday’s game and now umpires will witness the whole humidor process, from the time the balls are placed into the machine until they’re taken out to the field. Umpires are now to have full view of the balls at all times. The Rockies used to keep all the balls next to their dugout.

"It's just one of those things that's in the back of your mind," Lincecum told reporters. "If it's happening or not, it doesn't really matter. You just gotta come and show up. But in a crucial game like that, I'm thinking I don't want anything to happen for any reason. Err on the side of caution, I guess you would say, at least in my mind."

      Pick: Over

      Seattle at Texas (-185, 9)

You can’t blame the Texas Rangers for being pretty excited about the clinching the club’s first playoff berth since 1999. But if Sunday’s game is any indication as to how the Texas Rangers are going to approach their last seven games of the season, you might as well get used to noticing some big absences in the lineup card. Michael Young, Ian Kinsler, Elvis Andrus, Vladimir Guerrero and Nelson Cruz all sat out Texas’ 16-9 smashing of the Oakland A’s.

Rangers manager Ron Wilson didn’t waste any time figuring out his playoff pitching rotation either. A day after the Rangers clinched he said that he’s going with Cliff Lee for Game 1 against either the Yankees or Rays, followed by C.J. Wilson and Colby Lewis.

Sounds like Texas is in a postseason state of mind already.

      Pick: Mariners

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 27 in Baseball History...

1914 - Cleveland second baseman Nap Lajoie collects his 3,000th Major League hit as the Indians defeat the Yankees 5-3.

1919 - Babe Ruth's 29th home run is his first of the year in Washington he is the first to hit one in every park in the league in one season.

1923 - Lou Gehrig hit his first homer in the majors, off Bill Piercy of the Boston Red Sox. On the same date 15 years later, he hit his 493rd and last off Dutch Leonard of the Senators.

1930 - Hack Wilson hit two home runs for the Chicago Cubs, giving him a National League record fifty-six for the season.

1931 - The most desperately contested battle for individual honors takes place in the race for the National League batting title. Chick Hafey, who reported late due to a contract dispute, goes into the final doubleheader with the Reds batting .353, ahead of last year's champ Bill Terry (.349). Hafey gets only one hit in eight times at bat to drop to .349. Against Brooklyn, Terry gets only one hit in four times at bat. The title goes to Hafey, who bats .3488 to Terry's .3486. Jim Bottomley, Hafey's Cardinal teammate, finishes at .3481.

1935 - The Chicago Cubs won their 21st consecutive game and clinched the National League pennant.

1936 - Walter Alston played in his only Major League game, as a late-inning substitute at first base for Johnny Mize of the St. Louis Cardinals. He made one error in two chances and struck out his only time at bat.

1939 - The hometown White Sox play the first day-night doubleheader against Cleveland, losing both games, 5-2, and 7-5. Fans are charged separate admissions for each game.

1940 - Rookie Floyd Giebell pitched the Detroit Tigers to a pennant-clinching 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians. It was Giebell's second and last Major League win.

1953 - The St. Louis Browns play both their last game in Sportsman's Park and the last game in the franchise's 52-year history. Fittingly, they lose 2-1 to Billy Pierce and the Chicago White Sox in ten innings for their 100th defeat of the season.

1961 - Sandy Koufax notches seven strikeouts in a 2-1 win over the Phillies to set a National League record for strikeouts in a season: 269. This surpasses Christy Mathewson's 267 in 1903, which was accomplished in 367 innings pitched, as opposed to Koufax's 255.

1964 - Despite three home runs by Johnny Callison, the Phils are 14-8 losers to the Braves, who complete a four-game sweep at Connie Mack Stadium. With their seventh straight loss the Phils drop out of first.

1973 - The California Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in 11 innings, as Nolan Ryan struck out sixteen, including No. 383 of the season, a modern Major League record.

1983 - Tim Raines becomes the first player since Ty Cobb to steal 70 bases and drive in 70 runs in the same season.

1989 - The two San Francisco Bay teams clinch their divisions. Oakland wins the American League West by beating Texas 5-0, while San Francisco loses 1-0 to the Dodgers but is assured of the National League West crown when the second-place Padres lose to the Reds 2-1 in 13 innings.

1993 - Randy Myers became the first National League reliever with fifty saves in a season as the Chicago Cubs beat Los Angeles 7-3.

1996 - San Francisco's Barry Bonds became only the second player to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in a season. Jose Canseco was the other. Bonds, who had 42 homers, stole his 40th base in a 9-3 win over Colorado.

1997 - The Giants become the first team in baseball history to finish last two years in a row and then win a title. A 6-1 win over the Padres clinches the National League West. Wilson Alvarez, who came over from the White Sox on July 31, faces only 23 men in seven innings, allowing two hits and three walks.

1998 - Mark McGwire hit two homers to reach No. 70 in the St. Louis Cardinals' season finale against Montreal. It gave McGwire five homers in the season-ending three-game series. McGwire's 70th and final home run of the season was a line shot over the left-field wall on a first-pitch fastball from Carl Pavano in the seventh.

1998 - The New York Yankees won their seventh straight game and ended the regular season with 114 victories. With a .704 winning percentage, the Yankees (114-48) became the first team since the 1954 Cleveland Indians (111-43) to play .700 ball over an entire season.

          Daily Sports Roundup: September 27

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees hit the road to play the Blue Jays, the Phillies take on the Nationals, and the Packers head to Chicago for the Monday nighter.

          Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Monday Night Football this week has the Bears playing host to the Packers. Chicago (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) rolled to a 27-20 road win in Dallas last weekend, with Jay Cutler going 21-of-29 for 277 yards passing with three touchdown strikes. Matt Forte was held to just 29 rushing yards on 10 attempts for Chicago in that win. Green Bay (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) pounded the Bills 34-7 at home last week, as Aaron Rodgers completed 19 of 29 pass attempts for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Jermichael Finley caught four passes for 104 yards in that contest. The oddsmakers like the road team in the Monday night matchup, pegging the Packers as the 3-point favorites. The total for the game sits at 46.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Monday it'll be Detroit at Cleveland, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Seattle at Texas, Minnesota at Kansas City, Boston at the White Sox, Oakland at the Angels, and the Yankees at Toronto. A.J. Burnett (10-14, 5.05 ERA) is slated to get the ball for New York in that last matchup, while the Blue Jays counter with Marc Rzepczynski (2-4, 5.75 ERA). Righthander Burnett faced Toronto back on August 2, getting knocked around for eight runs on eight hits over 4 2-3 innings of work in a loss. Lefthander Rzepczynski is coming off a win over the Mariners in which he gave up two runs on seven hits over 6 1-3 innings pitched. Rzepczynski fanned eight in that win.

Meanwhile, the National League on Monday offers up Milwaukee at the Mets, Florida at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, the Dodgers at Colorado, the Cubs at San Diego, and Philadelphia at Washington. Roy Halladay (20-10, 2.53 ERA) is set to take on John Lannan (8-7, 4.58 ERA) in that Phillies/Nationals contest. Righthander Halladay is riding a four-game winning streak into Monday's game, holding the Braves to three runs on seven hits over seven innings of work in his most recent trip to the mound. Lefthander Lannan had to settle for a no-decision against the Astros last time out, surrendering three runs on six hits over seven innings. Washington is 7-3 over Lannan's last 10 starts.

            Monday's six-pack

-- Nevada Wolf Pack is ranked in top 25 for first time since 1948.

-- Giants lead Padres by half-game in NL West, but Padres have lead of half-game over Atlanta in the NL Wild Card race.

-- If you know Jim Furyk, ask him for a loan; he won FedEx Cup on Sunday, and with it a check for $10 million.

-- ESPN.com points out that since '95, the '99 Orioles hold the record for longest September winning streak, winning 13 consecutive games.

-- They also point out that SF Giants are first team since 1917 to go 18 consecutive games allowing three or less runs.

-- Giants' OF Andres Torres started this weekend, two weeks after having an appendectomy. Tough dude.

            ************************************************** *

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.......

            13) Saints' kicker Garrett Hartley duck-hooked a 29-yard FG that would have won game, and Atlanta upset the Saints 27-24 on Bourbon Street, in a renewal of the NFL's most underrated rivalry. By time you read this, Mr Hartley might not be the Saints' kicker anymore.

            12) Supposedly, John Carney is going to be one of the kicker the Saints bring in to try out as a replacement for Hartley. It seems like Carney has been around forever, did he kick at Notre Dame when Ara Parseghian was coach? (No, but it almost seems like it).

            11) Tough first half for Jimmy Clausen in Charlotte (1-4/15 passing) as Bengals ran 21 plays in Carolina territory, compared to two plays for Panthers in Cincinnati territorybefore halftime. Clausen played better in second half, but the Panthers appear to be bad, losing 20-7 at home.

            10) Quite a day for Seattle's Leon Washington, who ran two kickoffs for TDs as Seahawks upset San Diego at home, 27-20, offsetting huge day for Philip Rivers, who was 29-53/455 passing. Chargers were in Seattle's red zone six time, only got 17 points out of it. Not enough.

            9) Very big day for Michael Vick, throwing for 291 yards and three TDs in an easy 28-3 win at a Jacksonville team that didn't look good at all. Jaguars were the only NFL team Sunday that didn't score a touchdown.

            8) Arizona got really lucky in their home opener, when the normally reliable Sebastian Janikowski missed a 32-yard on last play of the game, giving the Redbiards a 24-23 win over Oakland in a pretty good game to watch. Janikowski also missed 41 and 58-yard FGs; tough day for him.

            7) Only five teams have ever made the playoffs after starting the season 0-3; only one of those five teams won a playoff game.

            6) Kyle Orton was 37-57/476 yards passing, but Denver scored only a couple field goals in five trips inside the Colts' red zone, as Indy won in Denver, 27-13. Indy only had 40 rushing yards on 22 carries.

            5) Sam Bradford was 23-37/232 and more importantly, Ram OL opened holes that accounted for 133 rushing yards, even with Steven Jackson on the sidelines for the whole second half, as St Louis led from wire-to-wire and beat the Redskins 30-16. Washington was 1 for 11 on 3rd down.

            4) Miami Dolphins wore alternative orange jerseys for home opener vs Jets; this drives me crazy. Just wear your normal jerseys, especially in a divisional rivalry game, and doubly especially in your freakin' opener at home. Winning is the best form of marketing.

            3) 49ers were 4-5 favorites to win NFC West; now they're 0-3 and last in the division- they looked terrible playing road game on a short week in Kansas City. Now we'll find out if Mike Singletary can coach.

            2) Has any NFL team ever started three different QBs in the first three games the way the Steelers have? It'll be four QBs in five weeks when Roethlisberger comes back in Week 6. Interesting situation.

            1) The TVs in the Mirage sportsbook had Eagle game and Redskin game on TVs next to each other, so I saw all of both games. There is no way on God's green earth than Donovan McNabb is better than Michael Vick right now. The Eagles look brilliant for having signed Vick.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

CUBS: Chicago is playing their best baseball of the season, unfortunately far too late to make a playoff impact. It's still fun to see this team finally playing up to their potential. Chicago stands 70-85 SU this year, including a respectable 35-39 SU on the road. The Cubs certainly have revenge on their minds as they come to San Diego, as they've lost all 4 meetings at home to the Padres earlier this season. The Cubs are -20.53 and -3.06 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Ace pitcher Carlos Zambrano will make the road start tonight, as he is 9-6 SU with an ERA of 3.56 and a WHIP of 1.50 this year. The Cubs are 4-0 last 4 road games against a team with a winning record. Chicago is 5-0 in their last 5 games as a road underdog. The Cubs are 12-5 in their last 17 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. Chicago is 3-15 in their last 18 games against the National League West. The Cubs are 4-0 in Zambrano's last 4 starts as a road underdog. The Cubs are 4-1 in Zambrano's last 5 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. Chicago is 1-4 in Zambrano's last 5 starts against the National League West.

Cubs are 14-3 last 17 road games.
Under is 7-2 last 9 road games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - CF Marlon Byrd (face) is questionable.

Projected Score: 4 (SIDE of the Day)

PADRES: (-150, O/U 6.5) Meaningful baseball in September is rare for San Diego, so it's exciting times in the city. San Diego opens their final homestand of the season tonight, with a 4 game series against the Cubs. Currently, the Padres are 0.5 games back of San Francisco for the NL West Division lead. The Padres do lead the NL Wild Card by 0.5 games, so it's clear that this playoff race is going down to the final day of the season. San Diego is +20.96 and +5.88 units both SU and on the RL overall this year. Tim Stauffer will take the mound tonight, as he is 5-4 SU with an ERA of 1.95 and a WHIP of 1.11 this year. The Padres are 4-1 in their last 5 Monday games overall. San Diego is 29-11 in their last 40 games against the National League Central. The Padres are 3-8 in their last 11 home games against a right-handed starter. The Padres are 4-0 in Stauffer's last 4 starts as a home favorite. San Diego is 3-10 in Stauffer's last 13 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Padres are 0-5 in Stauffer's last 5 starts against the National League Central.

Padres are 20-8 last 28 home games against a team with a losing record.
Under is 9-2 last 11 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.

Key Injuries - 3B Miguel Tejada (groin) is questionable.

                  Projected Score: 3
