Philadelphia Eagles at Jacksonville Jaguars – 50 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms.

New York Jets at Miami Dolphins – 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals – 30 percent chance of showers.

    Who’s hot

San Francisco 49ers are 13-6-4 ATS in their last 23 games.

Cleveland Browns are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games.

Arizona Cardinals are 6-2 ATS in their last eight on grass.

Seattle Seahawks are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games in Week 3.

Indianapolis Colts are 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games.

New York Jets are 20-7-2 ATS in their last 29 meetings with Miami.

Minnesota Twins are 9-2 in their last 11 Sunday games.

Tampa Bay Rays are 27-10 in their last 37 home games.

    Who’s not

New Orleans Saints are 2-6 ATS in their last eight as a favorite.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 home games.

Dallas Cowboys are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 road games.

Cincinnati Bengals are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games.

New York Giants are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games.

Jacksonville Jags are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 home games and 8-20 in their last 28 overall.

St. Louis Rams are 9-21 ATS in their last 30 home games.

Pittsburgh Pirates are 17-47 in their last 64 Sunday games.

Washington Nationals are 3-11 in their last 14 Sunday games.

    Key stat

157.5 – Yards per game the Houston Texans are averaging on the ground, which is No. 1 in the NFL through two weeks. Arian Foster has 300 rushing yards and three touchdowns so far. The Texans averaged 92.2 rushing yards per game last season, good for 30th overall in the league.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Knowshon Moreno (hamstring), Denver Broncos – Moreno pulled a hamstring in Friday morning’s practice and could miss the next two weeks. He was averaging 2.8 yards per carry through the first two games of the year and had a pair of rushing touchdowns. Laurence Maroney is expected to fill in as Denver’s No. 1 rushing option.

    Game of the day

    Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans

    Notable quotable

"A young quarterback needs time to mature as he grows in the game. I don't think Kolb has lost one thing. He's a franchise quarterback. He will win games, and championships, for the Eagles. But I think it's a different deal when you go out there and can't make a mistake or you're going to get crucified, which is the way this thing might have gone if he went back in there now." – Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid on his decision to start Mike Vick over Kevin Kolb at quarterback this week. Reid initially denied making the statement to Sports Illustrated writer Peter King, but later said that it is an accurate quote.

    Tips and notes

Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells is expected to make his season debut in some capacity Sunday when the Oakland Raiders come to town. Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt finally admitted that Wells has been out since the club’s last preseason game after he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and not merely a knee bruise like he had been telling everyone. Arizona is set as a 4.5-point favorite.

It looks like the Green Bay Packers will have the left side of their offensive line ready to face the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. Left tackle Chad Clifton and left guard Daryn Colledge are both listed as probable after missing some practice time this week. Clifton has a couple of sore knees and Colledge picked up a right knee injury in Thursday’s practice. Green Bay is pegged as a 3-point road favorite.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young will start this week against the Giants after spending some time on the bench last week, but will need to get a handle on his fumbling issues in a hurry. He is tied for second in the NFL with three fumbles through two games and has put the ball on the ground six times if you include preseason play. Titans QB coach Dowell Loggains says Young just needs to work on his fundamentals of ball security. Tennessee is set as a 3-point underdog at New York.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Cole Hamels (12-10, 2.93 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

Just like his team, Cole Hamels is on fire. He’s 5-0 with a minuscule 0.82 ERA over his last six starts. The under has cashed in eight of his last nine outings.

Hamels early-season struggles seem like a distant memory. The talented lefty credits Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt with his turnaround.

"You don't have to be that guy," Hamels told reporters after the Braves to one run on six hits in eight innings of work. "You don't have to carry the whole team on your back. When you have one big-time guy, that puts pressure on you."

Fausto Carmona (12-14, 3.79 ERA), Cleveland Indians

The Indians have only won twice in Carmona’s last nine starts but the big righty is pitching much better these days. He’s held opponents to three or fewer runs in each of his last five starts.

The under has cashed in five of his last six appearances and he’s given Cleveland quality starts in four of his last five outings.

Brian Duensing (10-2, 2.19 ERA), Minnesota Twins

If you haven’t seen much of Duensing this season, you’ll get your chance in the postseason. The 27-year-old lefty looks like Minnesota’s No. 3 starter behind Francisco Liriano and Carl Pavano.

He has eight quality starts in his last nine starts and the Twins are 7-2 in his last nine turns in the rotation.

      Slumping

Livan Hernandez (10-12, 3.75 ERA), Washington Nationals

The man with the bionic arm appears to be tiring. Hernandez was only charged with five earned runs in his last start, but Houston touched home eight times with the Dominican native in the game.

He’s been charged with four or more runs in four of his last six trips to the mound and 2-7 in his last nine appearances.

Sunday Night Baseball: Red Sox at Yankees
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-130, 10.5)

Boston trails New York by 6.5 games going into Saturday’s action, but the Red Sox play five of their remaining nine games against their arch rivals.

      Spoiler Alert

The Red Sox knocked the Yankees off their perch atop the AL East Friday night, but it’s the longest of longshots that the Sox will steal their rival’s playoff spot.

Still, Boston 3B/OF Bill Hall is aiming high.

“I don’t think spoiler is what we’re looking at,” Hall told reporters after Friday’s victory. “We want to sweep the series and go to Chicago and sweep there too. We’re looking to win out.”

The next best thing for Boston would be to prevent the Yankees from winning the division, a goal that is well within reach.

      No Dice

Boston sends Diasuke Matsuzaka to the mound Friday night, a scary proposition for Boston backers. It’s been a long season for Dice-K (9-6, 4.86 ERA), but he’s been especially bad of late, allowing at least four earned runs in each of his last seven starts.

Matsuzaka has faced the Yankees only once in 2010, an 11-9 loss at Yankee Stadium on May 17. He avoided taking the loss thanks to a late-inning Red Sox rally, but Matsuzaka was clearly overmatched, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and failing to make it out of the fifth inning.

      Plan B

The Yankees will counter with right-hander Dustin Moseley. Phil Hughes was originally slated to make the start, but manager Joe Girardi bumped Hughes to Wednesday in an effort to limit his workload. Hughes has already logged 169 1/3 innings in his first full big-league season as a starter.

Moseley has been shaky for the Yankees, but had one of his best outings of the season in his only appearance against the Red Sox. Moseley limited Boston to two runs over 6 1/3 innings and earned the win in a 7-2 victory on Aug. 8.

      Mr. September

After struggling at the plate for the last three months, Alex Rodgriguez has found his stroke in September. Rodriguez homered twice and drove in three runs in Friday’s series opener.

A-Rod is batting .333 for the month, and boasts an impressive 1.056 OPS. His six September home runs are more than he has hit in any other month. The Yankees’ already-potent lineup is a different animal altogether when Rodriguez is on his game.

      Problems for Papelbon

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon has struggled mightily this season. His ERA (3.94) and WHIP (1.20) are higher than in any season since he took over the closer’s job in 2006. Papelbon has blown a career-high seven saves and his K/BB ratio (2.96:1) is also his worst since ‘06.

Papelbon’s woes have prompted some to wonder aloud if a switch to young fireballer Daniel Bard is in order, but manager Terry Francona has stood behind Papelbon.

“We’ve talked about how he set the bar higher,” Francona told the Boston Globe this week. “He’s not there right now. But that doesn’t mean he can’t really be good. I also don’t think it means you immediately take that guy out of that role.”

Papelbon got the save on Friday night, but did allow one run on a Mark Teixeira home run.

      Trends

New York is 3-4 at home and 7-6 overall vs. Boston in 2010.

Boston has won five straight on the road and is 7-3 in their last 10.

The over is 6-1 in Diasuke Matsuzaka’s last seven starts.

The Yankees have lost three in a row and are 3-6 in their last nine home games.

The over is 5-2 in New York’s last seven.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-140, 10.5)

The Boston Red Sox are 6.5 games out of first in the American League East and trail the Wildcard race by 5.5 games. Needless to say, the BoSox season is all but over.

But don’t tell that to the team. Boston isn’t accepting a spoiler role in Sunday’s finale with the Yankees nor is it folding before the final week of the schedule is played.

"I don't think spoiler is what we're looking at," outfielder Bill Hall told the New York Post. "We want to sweep the series, and go to Chicago and sweep there too. We're looking to win out. I don't think anybody in our clubhouse is throwing in the towel, and not taking a spoiler role. If we knock them out, it's going to be us going in. That's not really a spoiler role, that's a motivation for us to try to make it to the playoffs."

The Red Sox opened the series with the Yankees by taking a 10-8 win Friday night. As of Saturday, Boston is just 4-10 in the last 14 meetings between these rivals in the Bronx, but it has won back-to-back games in Yankee Stadium going back to August 9.

      Pick: Boston

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies

If the New York Mets weren’t already pissed at the Philadelphia Phillies for past September wars, they sure are now following Chase Utley’s full-bodied slide on Ruben Tejada in the Phillies 3-2 win Friday night.

Utley took out the Mets second baseman during the fifth inning, attempting to break up a 5-4-3 double play started by third baseman David Wright. Philadelphia’s slugger slid late, taking Tejada with him as he crossed the bag.

While Tejada doesn’t hold a grudge against Utley, who ask if he was OK after the collision, the same can’t be said for the rest of the New York clubhouse, which painted a target on Utley and any other Philly infielder for the remainder of this series.

"Nobody is going to go and push us around - we're going to have our teammates' backs," Wright told reporters. "I think cooler heads will prevail, but we've got to let them know that we didn't appreciate it.

"(Utley) is a second baseman, if he wants guys sliding like that into him, then it's perfectly fine. He knows how to play the game and if he doesn't mind guys coming in like that when he's turning a double play, we don't have any problem with it."

Bettors can expect infielders and base runners to be watching their backs during Sunday’s finale, keeping stolen bags at a minimum. Heading into Saturday's Game 2, these teams have played under the total in six of their last seven meetings and boast a 7-21 over/under count in their last 28 head-to-head clashes.

      Pick: Under

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 26 in Baseball History...

1908 - Ed Reulbach of the Chicago Cubs became the only pitcher to throw two shutouts in a doubleheader, beating the Superbas 5-0 and 3-0.

1916 - Washington manager Clark Griffith excuses several regulars for the remaining games of the season so he can use some new players. Included is Walter Johnson, who has already won 25 games for the seventh-place club. In a league-leading 371 innings, he did not give up a home run, an all-time record.

1921 - Babe Ruth hits home runs 57 and 58 to beat the Indians 8-7, and the Yankees take a two-and-a-half-game lead. The four-game series draws 147,000 people.

1932 - Chuck Klein closes the season with 38 home runs and 20 stolen bases and becomes the only player of the lively-ball era (1920 and after) to lead his league in these two departments.

1953 - Billy Hunter becomes the last St. Louis Browns player to homer in a game. The Browns lose anyway 6-3 to Chicago.

1954 - Art Ditmar of the Athletics defeats the Yanks 8-6 in the last game the franchise will play in Philadelphia before moving to Kansas City. Yankees catcher Yogi Berra plays his only game at third base in his career and Mickey Mantle plays shortstop.

1955 - Ted Williams finishes the season at .356, well ahead of Al Kaline's .340, but does not have enough at-bats to win the batting title. The same thing happened in 1954. Williams was walked 136 times in 1954 and 71 times (an American League leading 17 were intentional) this year. A rule change will be made to recognize plate appearances, not times at bat.

1959 - At Milwaukee the Braves beat the Phillies 3-2 behind Spahn's 21st win. He is now ahead of Eppa Rixey as the winningest National League lefty.

1961 - Roger Maris of the Yankees tied Babe Ruth 34-year-old record with his 60th homer, off Baltimore's Jack Fisher.

1965 - Minnesota gains its first American League pennant by defeating Washington, 2-1. Jim Kaat (17-11) wins the clincher.

1971 - Jim Palmer becomes the fourth member of the Orioles 1971 pitching staff to notch his 20th victory. Only one other team in Major League history - the 1920 White Sox - boasted four 20-game winners.

1978 - New York District Court Judge Constance Baker Motley rules that women sportswriters cannot be banned from locker rooms in the state.

1979 - Atlanta's Phil Niekro notches his 20th win of the season by beating his brother Joe, the National League's only other 20-game winner of the season, 9-4. The Niekro brothers are the second pair (the other was Jim and Gaylord Perry) to win 20 games in the same year. Phil Niekro, who finishes at 21-20, is the first pitcher since fellow knuckleballer Wilbur Wood in 1973 to win and lose 20 games the same year, and the first National League pitcher to do so since 1905.

1981 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first to pitch five no-hitters, hurling a 5-0 victory over Los Angeles at the Astrodome.

1983 - Bob Forsch of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched the second no-hitter of his career, defeating Montreal 3-0.

1987 - Padres catcher Benito Santiago extends his hitting streak to 28 games in a 3-1 loss to the Dodgers, setting a new Major League record for rookies. Pittsburgh's Jimmy Williams had held the record with a 27-game streak in 1899.

1993 - Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners became the eighth pitcher to strike out 300 batters in a season with 13 strikeouts in 10 innings of a 3-2, 12-inning loss to Oakland.

1998 - Curt Schilling became the fifth to strike out 300 batters in consecutive seasons when he fanned Kevin Orie in the seventh inning of Philadelphia's 4-3 loss to Florida in the first game of a doubleheader.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Toronto Argonauts (-3.5, 49)

Touchdown Atlantic will feature the worst team in the CFL, the Edmonton Eskimos, who have a record of 2-9. These Eskimos were simply pathetic to watch in Montreal last week. On the road, the Eskimos are winless in five games. Quarterback Ricky Ray is playing sub-par football with only seven touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He owns the worst pass-completion percentage in the league at 61.6 percent. It’s not much better on the Argos side where QB Cleo Lemon is second to last with only 62.4 percent of his passes completed.

Argos DT Adriano Belli made the trip to the Maritimes but is still doubtful to play. He missed the last six games because of a foot injury. Running back Cory Boyd will also likely miss a second straight game because of a concussion. The Argos may welcome back WR Reggie McNeal, who is off the nine-game injury list and might play against the Eskimos.

        Pick: Toronto

            Daily Sports Roundup: September 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Steelers and Bucs meet in a battle of unbeaten teams, while the Dolphins take on the Jets, and the Sprint Cup Series takes on Dover.

            Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League offers up a full slate of games on Sunday, including a matchup of unbeaten teams in Tampa Bay when the Buccaneers (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) play host to the Steelers (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS). The Bucs stayed perfect by knocking off division-rival Carolina 20-7 on the road last week; Josh Freeman went 12-of-24 for 178 yards passing with two TD strikes in that contest. The Steelers are coming off a 19-11 win in Tennessee, but they'll be using Charlie Batch as their starting QB and Byron Leftwich as their backup on Sunday. Oddsmakers, though, still have the Steelers listed as the 2.5-point road favorites for Sunday's game, with the total for that matchup at 33.

Also on the NFL schedule for Sunday: Cincinnati (-3) at Carolina, Buffalo at New England (-14.5), San Francisco (-2.5) at Kansas City, Tennessee at the Giants (-3), Cleveland at Baltimore (-10.5), Atlanta at New Orleans (-4), Detroit at Minnesota (-11), Dallas at Houston (-3), Philadelphia (-3) at Jacksonville, Washington (-3.5) at St. Louis, Indianapolis (-5.5) at Denver, Oakland at Arizona (-4.5), and San Diego (-5.5) at Seattle. As well, Miami (-2) hosts the Jets in the Sunday night contest. The Dolphins (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) went on the road and knocked off the Vikings 14-10 last weekend, while the Jets (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) are coming off a 28-14 win over the Pats. The game's total is at 35.

There's also one CFL game on tap for Sunday, with Edmonton taking on Toronto at a neutral site in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Eskimos (2-9 SU, 3-8 ATS) have lost three in a row, and they're listed as 3.5-point underdogs against the Argos (6-5 SU, 6-5 ATS).

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Sunday it'll be Kansas City at Cleveland, Minnesota at Detroit, Baltimore at Toronto, Seattle at Tampa Bay, the White Sox at the Angels, Texas at Oakland, and Boston at the Yankees. Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-6, 4.86 ERA) is slated to take on Dustin Moseley (4-3, 4.94 ERA) in that BoSox/Yankees contest. Righthander Matsuzaka was beaten by the Orioles last time out, surrendering four runs on six hits over 6 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Moseley last started against the Rangers on September 12, allowing four runs on five hits over 6 2-3 innings in a loss.

Meanwhile, the National League on Sunday features Houston at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at Washington, Florida at Milwaukee, St. Louis at the Cubs, San Francisco at Colorado, Cincinnati at San Diego, the Dodgers at Arizona, and the Mets at Philadelphia. Pat Misch (0-4, 4.44 ERA) will get the ball for New York in that last contest, while the Phillies counter with Cole Hamels (12-19, 2.93 ERA). Lefthander Misch started against the Phillies back on August 14, giving up four runs (one earned) over six innings in a loss. Lefthander Hamels ran his winning streak to five starts last time out, holding the Braves to one run on six hits over eight innings of work. Hamels fanned six in that win.

            Roaring around the track . . .

The Sprint Cup Series hits the track at Dover International Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the second race of the Chase, the AAA 400. Kyle Busch took the checkered flag in the Autism Speaks 400 at Dover back in May, and he's the oddsmakers' choice at 4/1 to get the win on Sunday afternoon. Jimmie Johnson, who had won the previous two Dover events, is at 9/2 odds to visit victory lane in the AAA 400, with Carl Edwards at 10/1, Greg Biffle at 11/1, and Kurt Busch at 12/1. Clint Bowyer, who won the first Chase race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last week but was subsequently docked points for failing inspection, sits at 16/1 to take the victory.

As well, the Formula 1 circuit heads to Asia for the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday. Fernando Alonso won the series' last race, the Italian Grand Prix, on September 12, and he's tied with Lewis Hamilton at 4/1 odds to take the checkered flag in Singapore on Sunday. Sebastien Vettel, though, is the 9/4 race favorite, with fellow Red Bull driver just behind him on that list at 3/1 odds to win. Hamilton won the Singapore Grand Prix last season, with Alonso finishing third, Vettel fourth, and Jenson Button fifth, while Webber had brake issues and did not finish the race. Button is at 11/1 odds for Sunday.

              Sunday's six-pack

-- Since 2003, NFL road favorites that lost at home in OT week before are 11-0-1 vs spread. Unfortunately, Redskins fit that bill Sunday.

-- When the story of the 2010 New York Mets is written, I'm pretty sure the word "spunk" won't be used.

-- ESPN.com reported that Boise State has sold over $750,000 in gear just this month. Thats why successful coaches aren't overpaid.

              -- A's are 77-77, the 32nd time this year they've been exactly .500.

-- Troy Tulowitzki set all-time NL record for most September RBI on Saturday; his injury cost the Rockies a playoff spot.

-- Michael Young has played in 1,502 major league games; now he'll be in the playoffs for first time. Young is a true team player, moving to a different position twice to help his team get better.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

              13) UCLA 34, Texas 12. Wow. Bruins recovered four Texas fumbles, had only 26 passing yards, but outrushed Longhorns 264-59. Good for Rick Neuheisel, who got a raw deal at Washington.

              12) Alabama escaped Fayetteville with a 24-20 win, a game they trailed 17-7 at the half. Mallett was 29-44/357 passing, and he's the best QB a young Alabama defense will face this season, or at least until they play Boise State for the national title. This was a terrific game.

              11) 44,000 gallons of blue paint on Oregon State's practice field wasn't a big help, as Boise State beat the Beavers 37-24. OSU lost to both TCU and the Broncos, but they also beat the spread in both games.

              10) Breakthrough win for Tom O'Brien at NC State, as Wolfpack won a huge road game, 45-28 at a Georgia Tech team that had been 10-2 in last dozen games against the Wolfpack.

              9) Georgia is 0-3 in the SEC, and has a weird road game at Colorado up next. Can't be lot of fun between the hedges these days.

              8) Purdue lost three offensive starters to torn ACLs Saturday; they also lost at home to Toledo. Not a good day to be a Boilermaker.

              7) Maryland beat FIU 42-28; their last four TDs came on plays of 85-56-68-76 yards. The 76-yarder came on first play after FIU had closed to within 35-28 with 4:20 left. If you bet FIU, this was a bitter defeat.

              6) Ohio U scored on a 26-year pass play on the last play of game, then went for two points and the win; I HATE IT WHEN TEAMS GO FOR TWO IN THIS SPOT!!!!! Yes, I was shouting. Just kick the PAT, try to win in OT. Ohio didn't get the points and lost 24-23. When you tie the game late, it puts added pressure on your opponent, &$^#)^*#(

              5) Arkansas State scored TD with 0:50 left to take 28-27 lead, then lost when Troy State scored within 30 seconds for a 35-28 win. Lot of stuff happened in the last minute of that game.

              4) Ole Miss gained 578 total yards on 59 plays against Fresno State and also ran a punt back for a TD. Tough planeride home for Randy Stewart, the defensive coordinator for Fresno.

              3) Arizona State turned ball over seven times Saturday, and still scored 31 points; I must say can't ever remember that happening before. Even though they scored 31 and were getting 11, ASU pushed in a 42-31 loss.

              2) Order some moving vans for Albuquerque and Minneapolis for late fall; Lobos lost 45-10 at a terrible UNLV team, and Minnesota lost at home to Northern Illinois 34-23. New Mexico has to change coaches at end of season; they're useless. Gophers lost to South Dakota-USC and Northern Illinois last three weeks. Bet thats the first time for that.

              1) ESPN lucked out when the Big 11 started its own network, forcing ESPN to go after another league. SEC football is the gold standard of TV on fall Saturdays; ESPN is way better off with the SEC than the Big 11.
