    Daily Sports Roundup: September 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Alabama looks to avoid getting upset by Arkansas, while Boise State battles Oregon State, and Ohio State plays host to Eastern Michigan.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are four ranked matchups on the college football schedule for Saturday, with No. 1 Alabama at No. 10 Arkansas, No. 12 South Carolina at No. 17 Auburn, No. 24 Oregon State at No. 3 Boise State, and No. 22 West Virginia at No. 15 LSU. The oddsmakers have Auburn listed as a 3-point favorite for Saturday, with Boise State favored by 17.5 points, LSU by 9.5 points, and Alabama by 7 points. The top-ranked Crimson Tide are 3-0 both SU and ATS so far this season, pounding Duke 62-13 last week. The Razorbacks, meanwhile, are 3-0 SU and 1-1 ATS, and coming off a 31-24 road win over Georgia last week. The total for the Alabama/Arkansas matchup has been listed at 55.5.

Other games involving ranked teams on Saturday: Austin Peay at No. 11 Wisconsin, Northern Colorado at No. 25 Michigan State, Bowling Green at No. 21 Michigan (-25.5), Ball State at No. 18 Iowa (-28), No. 20 USC (-22) at Washington State, No. 16 Stanford (-5) at Notre Dame, Temple at No. 23 Penn State (-14), UCLA at No. 7 Texas (-16), No. 8 Oklahoma (-13.5) at Cincinnati, South Dakota State at No. 6 Nebraska, Kentucky at No. 9 Florida (-14), San Jose State at No. 13 Utah (-31), California at No. 14 Arizona (-6.5), No. 5 Oregon (-11.5) at Arizona State, and Eastern Michigan at No. 2 Ohio State (-44). The Buckeyes had no trouble getting past Ohio last weekend, pounding them 43-7.

As well, there are two games on the Canadian Football League's schedule for Saturday, with Saskatchewan at Hamilton and B.C. at Calgary. The Roughriders (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) and Tiger-Cats (6-5 SU, 6-5 ATS) are both coming off wins last week, and Hamilton is a 1.5-point favorite for Saturday. The Lions (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS) and Stamps (9-2 SU, 8-3 ATS) are both coming off Week 12 losses; Calgary is a 10.5-point favorite.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Baltimore at Toronto, Texas at Oakland, Boston at the Yankees, Minnesota at Detroit, Kansas City at Cleveland, the White Sox at the Angels, and Seattle at Tampa Bay. Doug Fister (6-12, 3.83 ERA) is expected to get the ball for the Mariners in that last contest, while Matt Garza (14-9, 4.01 ERA) is slated to pitch for the Rays. Righthander Fister dazzled the Rangers in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering just one run on nine hits over his seven innings of work in a win. Righthander Garza will be looking to bounce back from a loss to the Yankees in which he gave up seven runs (five earned) in his five innings pitched.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's then St. Louis at the Cubs, Atlanta at Washington, Cincinnati at San Diego, Houston at Pittsburgh, the Mets at Philadelphia, Florida at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at Arizona, and San Francisco at Colorado. Barry Zito (9-13, 3.98 ERA) takes the hill for the Giants on Saturday, while the Rockies are expected to counter with Jason Hammel (10-8, 4.56 ERA). Lefthander Zito snapped a seven-game losing streak in his most recent start, holding the Brewers to two runs on three hits over his six innings pitched. Righthander Hammel last pitched against the Dodgers on September 19, allowing four runs on six hits over four innings in that game.

Bettors’ best friend: Saturday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

There has been no line movement of note among Saturday’s MLB games.

      Saturday’s NCAAF line moves.

      Weather to watch

Red Sox at Yankees: A 16 mph wind is expected to blow out to left field.

Mets at Phillies: A 15 mph is expected to blow out to left-center field.

Cardinals at Cubs: A 10 mph is expected to blow out to right field. There is only a 10 percent chance of rain.

Astros at Pirates: A 12 mph wind is expected to blow out to left field.

Royals at Indians: A 13 mph wind is expected to blow out to right field.

Twins at Tigers: A 13 mph wind is expected to blow out to left field.

A complete summary of Saturday’s NCAAF weather

      Who’s hot

The Phillies are 10-0 in their last 10 overall and 44-15 in their last 59.

The Twins are 5-0 in their last five road games.

The Athletics are 4-0 in Gio Gonzalez’s last four starts.

N.C. State is 4-0 ATS in its last four overall, but Georgia Tech is 7-1 ATS in its last eight ACC games.

Michigan is 5-0 ATS in its last five non-conference games.

Oregon State is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 road games.

      Who’s not

The Mets are 0-5 in their last five overall.

The Dodgers are 3-13 in their last 16 games against right-handed starters.

The White Sox are 1-8 in their last nine overall.

Boston College is 0-6 ATS in its last six overall.

Georgia is 1-4 ATS in its last five SEC contests.

Cincinnati is 0-6 ATS in its last six non-conference games.

      Key stat

1081 – Passing yards for Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett through just three games this season. He may need similar production against an Alabama team that returned Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram last week and scored 45 points against Duke…in the first half.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ryan Williams is among five Virginia Tech Hokies sidelined for Saturday’s game at Boston College. The Hokies are expected to start Darren Evans in place of Williams at running back as they look for their first victory in Chestnut Hill. Williams had 40 carries through two games and scored three touchdowns in that span, two rushing and one receiving.

      Biggest game on the slate

Alabama Crimson Tide at Arkansas Razorbacks (7, 56.5)

      Notable quotable

“This is about Michael Vick and his accelerated play. He's sitting there as possibly the hottest quarterback in the National Football League at this time and deserves an opportunity to play.” – Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid on his decision to start Vick over Kevin Kolb for this week’s game against Jacksonville.

      Tips and notes

On the surface, it looks like Notre Dame is in deep trouble. The Fighting Irish are coming off brutal losses to Michigan and Michigan State and they have lost their last 10 games against teams in the Top 20 (Stanford, this week’s opponent, is a Top 20 team). They are also going up against an undefeated Cardinal squad that is outscoring opponents 155-41. Still, don’t count Notre Dame out. “We our obviously not happy at 1-2, but at the same time, it has almost kind of energized the team this week,” safety Harrison Smith told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. “Everybody is going hard. The coaches are getting after it. It is not we are down and everybody is feeling sorry for themselves.”

Something has to give when Mallett and the Arkansas offense goes up against what has been a dominant Alabama defense. Just how good has the Crimson tide ‘D’ been this season? Alabama boasts the nation’s No. 2 scoring defense (6.3 ppg), the No. 11 passing defense (132.7 ypg) and the No. 9 total defense (253.3 ypg). Of course, you could make the argument that the opponents have been San Jose State, Duke, Penn State, the latter of which started a freshman at quarterback.

South Carolina versus Auburn is an interesting clash, and not just because it pits a pair of undefeated SEC rivals against each other. Before you jump all over the Gamecock bandwagon, keep in mind that they have not started 4-0 since the 2001 season and they have lost their last five SEC road games. Matchup-wise, Auburn’s No. 1 SEC rushing offense is taking on South Carolina’s No. 1 rushing defense.

Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 13 Analysis and predictions
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Saturday

        Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1.5, 53.5)

One week after beating the Calgary Stampeders 43-37, the Roughriders are in Hamilton to face the Tiger-Cats, who they beat 37-24 last time they met in Regina on July 31. But, in that game, Arland Bruce III proved to be dominant for the Tiger-Cats by catching 16 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. This time around, the Riders secondary promises to make life more difficult for Bruce who leads the CFL with 985 receiving yards.

After a slow start, the Tiger-Cats won five of their last six games and now share second place in the East with the Toronto Argonauts. Bruce was shut down by the B.C. Lions last week but running back DeAndra’ Cobb took over with 151 rushing yards. The Tiger Cats will also feature new comer DE Stevie Baggs, who will make his Hamilton debut against his former team. The Roughriders are unbeaten at home but they have won only one of their five road games in 2010.

        Pick: Hamilton

        B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-10.5, 55)

The best team in the CFL has not lost to the Lions since November 3 2007, which means an eight-game winning streak against their rivals from British Colombia. This season, the Stampeders won its two games against the Lions, 27-22 in Week 6 and 48-39 in Week 9. The stats compiled by the Stampeders are incredible with an average of 36 points scored per game and a defence that leads in 16 of 25 categories such as points allowed (22.3 per game), TDs allowed (20), QB sacks (31) and turnovers (37).

The Lions can pull off an upset and their 3-8 record is misleading. The Alouettes learned that a few weeks ago. Quarterback Casey Printers can rely on two receivers, Geroy Simon and Emmanuel Arcenaux, who are on their way to 1,000-yard pass seasons. This said, the Stampeders are never easy prey at McMahon Stadium, where they are still unbeaten in five games this season. It would be quite a surprise to see them lose a second game in a row. Don’t forget that the Stampeders can guarantee a playoff spot and home-field advantage with a win against B.C.

        Pick: Calgary

        Sunday

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Toronto Argonauts (-3.5, 49)

Touchdown Atlantic will feature the worst team in the CFL, the Edmonton Eskimos, who have a record of 2-9. These Eskimos were simply pathetic to watch in Montreal last week. On the road, the Eskimos are winless in five games. Quarterback Ricky Ray is playing sub-par football with only seven touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He owns the worst pass-completion percentage in the league at 61.6 percent. It’s not much better on the Argos side where QB Cleo Lemon is second to last with only 62.4 percent of his passes completed.

Argos DT Adriano Belli made the trip to the Maritimes but is still doubtful to play. He missed the last six games because of a foot injury. Running back Cory Boyd will also likely miss a second straight game because of a concussion. The Argos may welcome back WR Reggie McNeal, who is off the nine-game injury list and might play against the Eskimos.

        Pick: Toronto

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Derek Lowe (14-12, 4.18 ERA), Atlanta Braves

This veteran sinkerball pitcher is making a late push to join the Braves playoff rotation, should they hold on in the NL Wild Card. The Braves are 4-0 in Lowe’s last four appearances and the righty owns a 1.35 ERA and a 16-1 strikeout to walk ratio over his last three starts.

              Slumping

Chris Carpenter (15-8, 3.28 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

Carpenter is one of many Cardinal players who thought the season ended a month earlier, or at least that what it seems like. The former Cy Young winner is 1-3 with a 6.20 ERA in September.

John Danks (13-11, 3.80 ERA), Chicago White Sox

Here’s another righty who’s lost his groove. Danks was one of the American League’s most consistent starters from start of June to the middle of August. Thanks to some subpar performances, the White Sox have lost eight of Danks’ last 10 starts.

Matt Garza (14-9, 4.01 ERA), Tampa Bay Rays

Is Garza out of juice? The hard-throwing California native hasn’t pitched a full six innings in any of his last four starts. He owns a big ol’ fat 10.93 ERA over his last three outings. Not surprisingly, the Rays are 0-3 in those three games.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies (-160, 9)

For most of the season, the question was whether or not the Phillies would win the National League East. Now the question is if the Phillies will ever lose another game.

Philadelphia, which trailed the Atlanta Braves from late May until early September, built a six-game lead by Friday and had won 10 in a row. The Mets, this weekend’s opponents, even sound intimated.

“I'm not surprised at all,” Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes told the New York Post. “They are unbelievable. They came back and caught us two years in a row in September in 2007 and ‘08. This is always their time of year.”

But the Phillies still have plenty to play for. They have not mathematically clinched and they also want the best record in baseball (currently tied for second with Tampa Bay at 92-61, a half game behind Minnesota). Manager Charlie Manuel said he wants to clinch as soon as possible so that he can rest his starters and align his pitching rotation for the playoffs.

Philadelphia does not have one of its “Big 3” going on Saturday, but it does have Kyle Kendrick, who is coming off two straight quality starts.

              Pick: Phillies

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians (127, 7.5)

Not many teams have been worse than Kansas City this season; four, to be exact. The good news for the Royals is that one of those four teams is Cleveland.

The Indians’ bats have been especially woeful. They have been shut out 15 times this season, and after managing just one run in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday, it looked like shutout No. 16 was on tap for Thursday. But Cleveland scored twice in the seventh before losing to Kansas City 4-2.

It won’t help the problem that Zack Greinke is going for the Royals on Saturday. Greinke has been modest by his standards this season (9-13, 4.00 ERA), but he boasts a stellar 3.63 ERA in his last eight starts.

              Pick: Royals

              This Day in Baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 25 in Baseball History...

1922 - The Giants beat St. Louis 5-4 in ten innings to clinch John McGraw's eighth pennant. It the tenth pennant for the Giants in 41 years in the National League.

1932 - Jimmie Foxx hits his 58th home run in the last game of the season to finish just shy of Ruth's 1927 record of 60.

1954 - Early Wynn two-hits the Tigers 11-1 for his league-leading 23rd win as the Indians notch their 111th victory, a new American League record, eclipsing the 110 wins of the 1927 Yankees.

1955 - Detroit outfielder Al Kaline becomes the youngest batting champ in history, as he takes the American League crown at age twenty.

1960 - For the first time since 1927, the Pirates are headed for the World Series. A gigantic torchlight victory parade in Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle at midnight celebrates the pennant.

1961 - Roger Maris tied Babe Ruth's 34-year-old record with his 60th homer, off Baltimore's Jack Fisher.

1965 - Another Kansas City publicity stunt makes the great Satchel Paige baseball's oldest performer. At ffity-nine, Paige hurls the first three innings, garners one strikeout, and allows just one hit, to Carl Yastrzemski, in his first Major League appearance since 1953. The Red Sox jump on reliever Don Mossi for a 5-2 win.

1981 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first player to pitch five no-hitters, hurling a 5-0 victory over Los Angeles at the Astrodome.

1983 - Bob Forsch of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched the second no-hitter of his career, defeating Montreal 3-0.

1986 - Houston's Mike Scott pitches a 2-0 no-hitter against the Giants at the Astrodome, clinching the National League West title for the Astros. It is the first time a division has ever been decided by a no-hitter, and the third consecutive game in which Astros pitchers have allowed two hits or less.

1989 - Wade Boggs becomes the first player in Major League history to achieve both 200 hits and 100 walks in four consecutive seasons. It is his seventh straight 200-hit season overall, extending his own modern Major League record.

1993 - Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners became the eighth pitcher to strike out 300 batters in a season with 13 strikeouts in ten innings of a 3-2, twelve-inning loss to Oakland.

1997 - Pedro Martinez joins Curt Schilling of the Phillies in the 300-strikeout club. The Expos right-hander fans nine Marlins in a 3-2 victory to become the first pitcher in a quarter-century with 300 strikeouts and an ERA under 2.00 (Martinez finishes with an National League best 1.90 mark). The last time two pitchers fanned 300 in a season was 1972 when Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan turned the trick.

1998 - Curt Schilling became the fifth pitcher ever to strike out 300 batters in consecutive seasons when he fanned Kevin Orie in the seventh inning of Philadelphia's 4-3 loss to Florida in the first game of a doubleheader.

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts from the desert......

                          13) High drama in the Grand Final of the AFL (Australian Football), as for only the third time, the Grand Final ended in a tie. Strangest rule of all time has to be this: instead of an overtime, they'll play another game next week to decide the champion.

                          12) Now the accountants have to love it, since 100,000 people were at the game last night; and yes, I sat in the sportsbook here watching this game halfway around the world. Pretty good game.

                          11) Visited the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in downtown Las Vegas, the store where they film the History Channel program, Pawn Stars; store is smaller in person than it appears on TV, mostly jewelry for sale. Pretty cool to have been there, though the only guy who was there who is on the TV show was Rick's son, the guy who bought the jeep last week.

                          10) The power of TV: Line to get in the store was a block long. There is not a whole lot else in that immediate neighborhood. Lot different than the glitz and lights of the Strip.

                          9) New favorite snack food: Pepperidge Farm cheddar goldfish.

                          8) Whatever SMU pays June Jones, he earns it; Mustangs are getting a lot better quickly. They'll win Conference USA pretty soon.

                          7) SMU's football stadium is Gerald Ford Stadium, but not the former President; this Mr Ford is a rich oil dude who is a big booster and was mentioned as a potential buyer for the St Louis Rams last year.

                          6) How do the Nationals not re-sign Adam Dunn next year?

                          5) ESPN televises a few high school football games, so we need then to show a Southlake Carroll HS game; every QB they have seems to wind up in high Division I. If they're going to show high school games, might as well show a school that produces a lot of Division I QB's.

                          4) Not surprising to see Miguel Tejada come up with a huge hit in San Diego's 4-3 win last night; the guy is just a super player, a leader.

                          3) Phillies have won 11 games in a row, longest winning streak in majors this season. Charlie Manuel is right man at right time for these Phillies.

                          2) I'm staying at the Mirage this week; cool hotel, clientele is clearly bit older than other hotels i've stayed at here (Planet Hollywood, MGM or Rio). Sportsbook is good and roomy. Nice place.

                          1) I'm thinking it means more to Tampa Bay than Bronx Bombers to win the AL East; they need to hang some banners in their dome to drum up support for a new stadium, to develop a tradition to increase their base of fans. Winning the division doesn't mean much to arrogant Bronx fans who see winning their World Series as the only acceptable result.
