      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 24 in Baseball History...

1916 - Marty Kavanagh, Indians utility man, hits the American League's first pinch-hit grand slam for Cleveland in a 5-3 win over the Red Sox. The ball rolls through a hole in the fence and cannot be retrieved in time for a play at the plate.

1929 - Tom Zachary of the Yankees wins his 12th without a loss 5-3 over Boston. He is the first pitcher to go 12-0 for a season.

1934 - Idle Detroit wins the pennant, as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 5-0 in the season finale at Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth walks in the first inning, limps to first base, and leaves for a pinch runner in his last home game as a Yankee.

1946 - Disappointing on the field, the Yankees nevertheless finish their home season with an attendance of 2,265,512. The best previous draw was the 1929 Cubs at 1,485,166. Total Major League attendance was 18.5 million, 75 percent more than 1945.

1948 - The Yankees whip the Red Sox 9-6 while Cleveland loses at Detroit, 4-3. New York, Boston and Cleveland are now tied for first place in the American League with identical 91-56 records.

1957 - In the last game at Ebbets Field, 6,702 fans watch Dodgers lefty Danny McDevitt prevail over the Pirates 2-0. Gil Hodges has the last RBI.

1969 - Home runs by Donn Clendenon and Ed Charles, and Gary Gentry's four-hitter, clinch the National League East for the Mets, who defeat Steve Carlton and the Cards 6-0. As the game ends, a large number of the 54,928 fans pour onto the field ripping up huge chunks of sod. Seven fans suffer fractures in the celebration.

1974 - Al Kaline doubles off Dave McNally for his 3,000th career hit, as the Tigers beat the Orioles, 5-4.

1979 - Pete Rose singles as the Phillies fall to the Cardinals, 7-2. Rose reaches 200 hits in a season for the tenth time. He breaks the Major League record of nine such seasons held by Ty Cobb.

1980 - The Braves, with 24,897 watching, beat the Astros 4-2 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, pushing the Braves over the one million attendance mark for the season. The eleven other National League teams have already reached that milestone, making this the first season ever in which all the teams in one league have done so.

1984 - Rick Sutcliffe pitches a two-hitter in a 4-1 win over Pittsburgh to clinch the National League East title for the Cubs, who will be making their first postseason appearance since 1945. The win is Sutcliffe's 14th in a row.

1985 - Expos outfielder Andre Dawson slugs three home runs, including a pair of three-run shots in a 12-run fifth inning, to lead Montreal to a wild 17-15 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Dawson joins Willie McCovey as the only players to hit two home runs in one inning on two different occasions.

1992 - Toronto's Dave Winfield becomes the oldest player in Major League history to reach the 100-RBI plateau. The 40-year-old does the trick in his 2,700th career game.

          Daily Sports Roundup: September 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants look for a win over the Rockies in Colorado, while the Rangers do battle with the Athletics, and ranked TCU takes on SMU.

          Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football game on the schedule for Friday has No. 4 TCU playing on the road against SMU. The ranked Horned Frogs (3-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) rolled past Baylor 45-10 at home last week, with Andy Dalton good on 21 of 23 pass attempts for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Ed Wesley ran for 165 yards and two scores for TCU in that win. The Mustangs (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) beat Washington State 35-21 at home last time out, as Kyle Padron went 19-of-34 for 280 yards and four touchdowns. The Horned Frogs are listed as 18.5-point road favorites against SMU on Friday, with the total set at 55.5.

As well, there's one Canadian Football League game on tap for Friday, with Montreal at Winnipeg. The Alouettes (8-3 SU, 6-5 ATS) ride a two-game winning streak into this Friday matchup; Montreal got past Edmonton 31-14 at home last week, with Anthony Calvillo going 24-of-42 for 327 yards and an interception. The Blue Bombers (3-8 SU, 5-6 ATS) are coming off a 17-13 road loss against Toronto, and they're pegged as 5.5-point home underdogs by the oddsmakers for Friday. The total for the contest is at 54.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Friday it's Kansas City at Cleveland, Minnesota at Detroit, Boston at the Yankees, Baltimore at Toronto, Seattle at Tampa Bay, the White Sox at the Angels, and Texas at Oakland. The Rangers are expected to send Tommy Hunter (12-4, 3.92 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, with the Athletics going with Bobby Cramer (2-0, 2.45 ERA). Righthander Hunter lost to the Mariners in his most recent trip to the mound, allowing two runs on six hits over his six innings of work. Lefthander Cramer is perfect so far in his Major League career, beating the Twins and the Royals in his two starts. Cramer has given up just three runs over his 11 innings.

Meanwhile, the National League on Friday offers up St. Louis at the Cubs, Houston at Pittsburgh, the Mets at Philadelphia, Atlanta at Washington, Florida at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at Arizona, Cincinnati at San Diego, and San Francisco at Colorado. Tim Lincecum (14-10, 3.60 ERA) takes the hill for the Giants on Friday, while the Rockies respond with Jhoulys Chacin (9-9, 3.30 ERA). Righthander Lincecum was beaten by the Brewers last time out, surrendering two runs on six hits over his five innings of work. Righthander Chacin blanked the Dodgers in eight innings of work in his last mound trip.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

            Lines to watch

The total for TCU vs. SMU opened at 52 but has since jumped up to as many as 55 with some books.

            Weather to watch

Cardinals at Cubs: There is a 20 percent chance of rain with a 21 mph wind blowing out from home toward center field.

Braves at Nationals: There is an expected 13 mph wind blowing from first toward third across the diamond.

Red Sox at Yankees: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing in from right center field.

Astros at Pirates: There is an expected 16 mph wind blowing from first toward third across the diamond.

Royals at Indians: There is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms with an expected 21 mph wind blowing out from behind home plate.

Twins at Tigers: There is an expected 23 mph wind blowing in from right center field.

Mets at Phillies: There is an expected 12 mph wind blowing from first toward third across the diamond.

Marlins at Brewers: There is an expected 21 mph wind blowing in from right center field.

            Who’s hot

The Cubs are 7-1 in their past eight games.

The over is 7-1 in the Royals past 8 games.

The Phillies are 44-15 in their past 59 games overall.

            Who’s not

The Nationals are 4-10 in their past 14 games.

The under is 14-3 in the Astros past 17 road games.

The under is 10-3 in the Padres past 10 home games.

            Key stat

84: Consecutive starts by Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez without allowing more than one home run before giving up two gopher balls to the Diamondbacks in an 8-4 loss to Arizona on Wednesday. That's the longest streak since Orel Hershiser went 90 starts from 1989 through 1993.

            Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

For wagering purposes as much as fantasy waiver-wire use, San Diego running back Ryan Matthews won’t play in the Chargers game at Seattle on Sunday. Matthews, who at times this week appeared in a walking boot due to a high ankle sprain, ran on a treadmill on Thursday but saw no substantial improvement. Mike Tolbert, who had 82 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries in his stead against the Jaguars last week, likely will get the nod this weekend. “Getting better,” Mathews told SignOnSanDiego.com. “It’s sore.”

            Game of the Day
TCU Horned Frogs at SMU Mustangs (+17, 55)

            Notable quotes

"It's pretty cool. It's pretty sick. For the team, for the guys, for the organization, it's a big step forward and we're going to be on TV again, so that's good." – Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin on HBO doing a 24/7 series on the Penguins and Capitals leading up to and after their clash in the Winter Classic on January 1.

            Tips and notes

You won’t see it on any injury report, but the Texans suffered a huge blow when left tackle Duane Brown tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and was suspended for four games on Wednesday. The suspension – as most the NFL hands out – was done on the low-key and many people may have missed the fact that the team’s most explosive offense will now be without one of its cornerstones. And when the team faces sack artist DeMarcus Ware on Sunday, Brown’s absence will be felt as it will be up to Rashad Butler to shut down the Pro Bowler. Good luck with that. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub should be sure the trainers have an ice bath waiting for him.

Speaking of offensive line woes, the Eagles sure could use some help. The unit looked to be one of the best heading into last season, but was ravaged by injuries and a bunch of head cases. This year, the line has surrounded and NFL-worst 11 sacks and now it looks like guard Reggie Wells will start in place of Nick Cole on the right side. And you wonder why Michael Vick will be starting at quarterback? "We didn't do a couple of things right right there," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg told the Philadelphia Daily News. "We did many things very well up front, many things. There were a few that we didn't do very well. You take out a big percentage of the plays and I think the offensive line played well. However you can't just do that, those plays were there and we have to be more consistent."

Don’t be fooled by SMU coach June Jones and his wide-open offensive philosophy. The Mustangs passing game is suspect. SMU is averaging just 242 passing yards per game – ranked 50th nationally – and averages only 389.3 yards per game overall, putting them 60th in the country. And this tonight they have to crack a tough nut – the TCU defense. The Horned Frog’s D is allowing a microscopic 222.7 yards per game and allowing opponents to convert just 29.7 percent of their third downs.

              Thursday's six-pack

-- Roy Oswalt is now 13-13, 2.80 overall this season, but is 9-0, 1.40 in his last ten starts for the Phillies.

-- Saratoga's Tim Stauffer came up big for the Padres, allowing one run in six IP in a 3-1 San Diego win that put Friars back in first place.

-- Game-winning hit for San Diego was Miguel Tejada's 300th career home run. What a great addition Tejada has been.

-- Arizona Diamondbacks hired former Padre GM Kevin Towers as their new GM. Seems like a good move for the Snakes.

-- Chargers didn't trade Vincent Jackson, so his suspension stays at six games; he should be a really happy guy when he reports to the Bolts for their 7th game of the season.

-- Raiders announced that Bruce Gradkowski will start at QB this week in Arizona; he played well in the second half last week.

                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streakers

Brett Myers, Houston Astros (13-7, 2.76 ERA)

The 30-year-old right hander should at least be in the conversation for the National League Cy Young award.

Myers is fourth in the NL in innings (212) and sixth in ERA, but has been even better during the second half of the season. In his past eight starts he has given up just nine runs over 54 innings. The past three times he has toed the rubber he has been nearly unstoppable, allowing only one run over 21 innings while striking out 23 against just three walks.

This season against Pittsburgh he has picked up a win by going seven innings and allowing just two earned in his only outing against the Pirates.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (17-8, 3.46 ERA)

It’s been nearly a month since the right-hander has not notched a quality start.

Verlander went the distance the last time he toed the rubber, tossing a complete game against the White Sox as he yielded just three earned runs on six hits, striking out eight against only one walk. Over his past six outings, he has given up just 12 earned runs over 46 innings.

Against the Twins this season he has been strong, going 1-1 with a 2.51 ERA as Minnesota has struck out 18 times against six walks.

"He's a special talent," Tigers manager Jim Leyland told the Associated Press. "We all know that. You don't just find guys like that."

                    Slumping

Jeff Niemann, Tampa Bay Rays (10-7, 4.48 ERA)

This would be the weak spot of the Rays rotation.

Niemann has been absolutely blasted the past few weeks, picking up the loss in four of his last five decisions as his team dropped them all. Over that span, he has given up 31 earned runs over just 19.1 innings. The last time he took the mound, he was tagged for five earned over just 4.1 innings as he allowed six hits, including two home runs, and walked three.

The reason for his terrible outings is very clear: he is getting the ball up. The ground ball pitch has gotten only 25 grounders versus 41 fly outs during his rough patch.

John Ely, Los Angeles Dodgers (4-8, 5.00 ERA)

The young righty has seen his share of struggles this season.

Since returning to the starting rotation on September 11, Ely has given up nine earned runs over 10.1 innings in his past two starts. The last time he took the bump he was tagged for six earned runs on five hits, including allowing five walks and a pair of bombs in a 12-2 loss to Colorado.

In just 90 innings this year, Ely has yielded 91 hits and struck out just 66 against 33 walks.

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers [7:05 PM ET]

TWINS: Minnesota was the first team this year to clinch a playoff berth, as they ran away with the American League Central division. The Twins have been the best team in baseball for the past few months, and it appears nothing is going to stop them. Minnesota is tied with the Yankees for the best record in all of baseball at 92-60 SU. The Twins have been so consistent this season, they even have a winning record on the road at 40-35. The Twins are +20.59 and +4.59 units both SU and on the RL overall this season. Lefty Francisco Liriano will make the road start tonight, as he is 14-8 with an ERA of 3.44 and a WHIP of 1.25 this season. Under is 7-1 last 8 road games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - 2B Orlando Hudson (shoulder) is questionable.

                    Projected Score: 3

TIGERS: (-135, O/U 7.5) Detroit is simply playing out their season, as they have no chance of making the postseason. Instead, Detroit is focusing on finishing the year with a winning record. Currently, the Tigers are at 77-75 SU this year. The Tigers are -0.07 and +13.77 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. The Tigers have won 5 of their past 6 games thanks to a powerful offense. Too little too late, yet it's still nice to see this highly hyped team play well. Veteran ace Justin Verlander will take the home mound tonight, as he is 17-8 SU with an ERA of 3.46 and a WHIP of 1.19 this year. The Tigers are 18-6 in their last 24 games against the American League Central. The Tigers are 12-5 in their last 17 home games overall. Detroit is 35-16 in their last 51 home games against a left-handed starter. The Tigers are 1-6 in their last 7 games following an off day. Detroit is 19-7 in Verlander's last 26 starts against the American League Central.

Tigers are 2-9 last 11 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%.
Over is 20-7 last 27 games against a left-handed starter.

Key Injuries - LF Carlos Guillen (knee) is out.

Projected Score: 5 (SIDE of the Day)

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-175, 9)

Far be it from us to give love to the Evil Empire, but few teams have given Red Sox Nation a beatdown like the Bronx Bombers.

New York has abused Boston pitching this year. Through 12 games, the Yankees are batting a staggering .279 against the Red Sox, including 16 home runs and 22 doubles. Even more impressive, the team has scored a whopping 76 runs – 6.3 per game – mostly on singles and smart base running. If the Bombers explode for power, things could get ugly, fast.

The Yankees also have pitched very well against Boston. New York pitchers have a 4.04 ERA against Boston this year and have struck out 73 batters, allowing the Red Sox to hit just .254.

Overall, the Red Sox are just 3-10 in their past 13 trips to New York and a meager 6-16 in the team’s past 22 meetings overall.

                    Pick: Yankees

Cincinnati Reds at San Diego Padres (-111, 7)

Don’t expect the Reds to be afraid of Petco Park and San Diego’s vaunted pitching staff.

Cincinnati is one of the top road hitting teams in baseball, averaging nearly 4.8 runs per game. Overall, the team is hitting .265 in opponent’s yards, to go with 144 doubles, 81 home runs and 16 triples. The Reds have won three of their past five road games and the Padres have lost 10 of their last 14 at home.

And that’s just a part of the troubles the Padres are having. The team has emerged from its August swoon, but has yet to put together a consistent effort on a regular basis. San Diego is 5-5 in its past 10 overall and is averaging just 3.7 runs per game over its past two series.

“We need to take a step back, relax a little,” Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez told the San Diego Union Tribune. “As a team we want to find the holes so bad it's working backwards against us. When things aren't happening for you, you put more pressure on yourself. We know that most of the losses we've had are on us the hitters, and we're trying to do too much.”

                    Pick: Reds.

                            Friday

Montreal Alouettes at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5.5, 54)

The Alouettes will be seeking a third straight win against Blue Bombers, who have been capable of the best and the worst this season. The last two weeks have been a clear example of that lack of consistency. After beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-2 on September 12, the Bombers went to lose 17-13 against the Argonauts in Toronto. The Blue Bombers have not won two in a row in more than a year and they have the bad habit of shooting themselves in the foot.

With Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo back to full strength after missing two games with a sternum injury, the Alouettes have to be considered one the powerhouses of this league. This said, the Montreal defence must do its part and contain one of the best rushing team led by Fred Reid. Winnipeg has the best average per run (6.6) and the second best rushing yard average per game (146.5).

Last time the Blue Bombers met the Alouettes, more than a month ago, they lost 39-17.

                            Pick: Montreal

                            Saturday

                            Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1.5, 53.5)

One week after beating the Calgary Stampeders 43-37, the Roughriders are in Hamilton to face the Tiger-Cats, who they beat 37-24 last time they met in Regina on July 31. But, in that game, Arland Bruce III proved to be dominant for the Tiger-Cats by catching 16 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. This time around, the Riders secondary promises to make life more difficult for Bruce who leads the CFL with 985 receiving yards.

After a slow start, the Tiger-Cats won five of their last six games and now share second place in the East with the Toronto Argonauts. Bruce was shut down by the B.C. Lions last week but running back DeAndra’ Cobb took over with 151 rushing yards. The Tiger Cats will also feature new comer DE Stevie Baggs, who will make his Hamilton debut against his former team. The Roughriders are unbeaten at home but they have won only one of their five road games in 2010.

                            Pick: Hamilton

                            B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-10.5, 55)

The best team in the CFL has not lost to the Lions since November 3 2007, which means an eight-game winning streak against their rivals from British Colombia. This season, the Stampeders won its two games against the Lions, 27-22 in Week 6 and 48-39 in Week 9. The stats compiled by the Stampeders are incredible with an average of 36 points scored per game and a defence that leads in 16 of 25 categories such as points allowed (22.3 per game), TDs allowed (20), QB sacks (31) and turnovers (37).

The Lions can pull off an upset and their 3-8 record is misleading. The Alouettes learned that a few weeks ago. Quarterback Casey Printers can rely on two receivers, Geroy Simon and Emmanuel Arcenaux, who are on their way to 1,000-yard pass seasons. This said, the Stampeders are never easy prey at McMahon Stadium, where they are still unbeaten in five games this season. It would be quite a surprise to see them lose a second game in a row. Don’t forget that the Stampeders can guarantee a playoff spot and home-field advantage with a win against B.C.

                            Pick: Calgary

                            Sunday

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Toronto Argonauts (-3.5, 49)

Touchdown Atlantic will feature the worst team in the CFL, the Edmonton Eskimos, who have a record of 2-9. These Eskimos were simply pathetic to watch in Montreal last week. On the road, the Eskimos are winless in five games. Quarterback Ricky Ray is playing sub-par football with only seven touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He owns the worst pass-completion percentage in the league at 61.6 percent. It’s not much better on the Argos side where QB Cleo Lemon is second to last with only 62.4 percent of his passes completed.

Argos DT Adriano Belli made the trip to the Maritimes but is still doubtful to play. He missed the last six games because of a foot injury. Running back Cory Boyd will also likely miss a second straight game because of a concussion. The Argos may welcome back WR Reggie McNeal, who is off the nine-game injury list and might play against the Eskimos.

                            Pick: Toronto
