Bettors’ best friend: Thursday’s wagering tips

    Lines to watch

Pitt opened as a 3.5 point underdog hosting Miami with the total at 54, but is now listed at +4 with a 50-point total.

    Weather to watch

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians – 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Florida Marlins at Milwaukee Brewers – 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

    Who’s hot

Pitt Panthers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games.
San Francisco Giants are 8-2 in their last 10 road games.
Colorado Rockies are 20-8 in their last 28 overall.

    Who’s not

St. Louis Cardinals are 9-19 in their last 28.
Seattle Mariners are 24-49 in their last 73.
Houston Astros are 4-9 in their last 13 meetings in Washington.
Kansas City Royals are 7-23 in their last 30 road games.
San Diego Padres are 8-17 in their last 25.

    Key stat

262 – Total yards the Miami Hurricanes are giving up per game, good for 15th in the nation.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Darrelle Revis (hamstring), New York Jets – Revis is expected to miss two games with his hamstring, putting Antonio Cromartie in the hot seat this week. He’ll likely draw the assignment of covering Brandon Marshall when the Jets head into Miami as 1.5-point underdogs.

    Game of the day

No. 19 Miami Hurricanes at Pittsburgh Panthers

    Notable quotable

"What I mentioned to the team was that, quite honestly, I'm basically tired of dealing with some of these issues. I'm tired of the embarrassment to the owner; as I feel, it's an embarrassment to our owner and this organization.” – Jets coach Rex Ryan on Braylon Edwards’ DWI arrest earlier this week. Edwards will not start in the Sunday Nighter against Miami, but will play eventually.

    Tips and notes

The middle of Pitt’s offensive line remains a major concern as the Panthers get set to host the Miami Hurricanes and their speedy defense. Pitt has been practicing with redshirt freshman center Jack Lippert taking most of the snaps with Alex Karabin banged up. Guards Chris Jacobson and Greg Gaskins haven’t been able to open up much room for sophomore running back Dion Lewis, who has 102 yards on 35 carries so far this season.

Oakland Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski will start again this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals as four-point underdogs. Gradkowski stepped in for Jason Campbell last week and was 11 of 22 for 165 yards and a touchdown in a 16-14 win over the St. Louis Rams.

After Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid named Mike Vick his starter for this week’s road game against Jacksonville, he won’t dismiss the idea that Kevin Kolb could be traded ahead of the league’s Oct. 19 trade deadline. The Cleveland Browns have already come calling about Kolb, but were told he wasn’t available – at least not yet.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Ryan Dempster (14-10, 3.50 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Dempster hasn’t allowed a run over his last two starts, a pair of seven-inning wins. He dropped Milwaukee 1-0 on Sept. 11, giving up three hits while striking out two and then beat the Florida Marlins 2-0 in his last start. Dempster allowed four hits and struck out five in that outing. He has allowed more than four runs in only two of his last 20 starts.

      Slumping

Sean O’Sullivan (2-6, 6.58 ERA), Kansas City Royals

O’Sullivan has allowed 21 runs and eight long flies over his last four starts. He hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning in any of those outings and is coming off a 6-4 loss against Cleveland. O’Sullivan allowed five runs and six hits over 68 pitches through four innings and has just one win in 11 starts for K.C. since coming over from the Yankees in late-July.

Dallas Braden (9-13, 3.65 ERA), Oakland Athletics

Braden has dropped four straight starts heading into Thursday’s matchup with the Texas Rangers. He took a hard-luck loss against the Yankees to start the slide, allowing only one run over five innings in a 5-0 loss. Since then he has deserved each of the next three losses, allowing at least four runs in all of them.

St. Louis at Pittsburgh (-120, 9)

As the St. Louis Cardinals play out the rest of their schedule, life on the road gets more difficult by the day. The Cardinals have dropped 13 of their last 18 games as visitors and haven’t won a road series since they swept the Reds in Cincinnati Aug. 9-11.Their offense has been a major problem, with the club being held to two or fewer runs in nine of those 18 games.

"We're trying to win," Colby Rasmus told reporters after Tuesday’s loss to the Pirates. "Coming out tonight trying to win. Yesterday, we tried to win. We just can't seem to put a finger on what's going on. I just chalk it up to baseball. Nobody's coming in here wanting to lose. Everybody wants to do good. We just ain't got no mojo right now."

St. Louis is now 31-45 this season on the road.

      Pick: Pirates

      Houston at Washington (-125, 8.5)

The Houston Astros could be without two of their starting outfielders again on Thursday. Speedy center fielder Michael Bourn has missed the last three games with a strained right oblique and Hunter Pence sat out Wednesday’s game after leaving Tuesday’s game with a right hip flexor problem. He felt discomfort while running out a groundball in the top of the first inning.

"It wasn't serious, but when you tweak something like that, you can't run through it. It's impossible," Pence said after the game. "So I knew that I wasn't going to be capable to sprint again. I'd have to jog, and that's not acceptable."

Houston is 4-9 in its last 13 games in Washington.

      Pick: Under

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 23 in Baseball History...

1908 - Fred Merkle of the New York Giants failed to touch second base as the apparent winning run crossed home plate in a crucial game with the Chicago Cubs. The ensuing dispute resulted in the game being declared a tie and played over on Oct. 8 when the Cubs and Giants ended the season in a tie.

1925 - Washington shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh, a .294 hitter, is named the American League Most Valuable Player with 45 points; A's outfielder Al Simmons is second with forty-one.

1936 - Carl Hubbell notches his sixteenth consecutive victory, his 26th of the year. King Carl beats the Phils, 5-4. He resumes the streak next year to reach a record 24 wins in a row.

1952 - The Brooklyn Dodgers clinched the National League pennant, the first time since 1948 that the pennant wasn't decided in the season's final game.

1957 - Hank Aaron's eleventh-inning homer gave the Milwaukee Braves a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and the National League pennant. It was the first time since 1950 that a New York team hadn't finished first.

1961 - Ernie Banks voluntarily takes the bench as a sore knee brings his 717 consecutive-games-played streak to an end.

1962 - A 12-2 Dodgers' loss at St. Louis is enlivened by Maury Wills, who ties Ty Cobb's long-standing Major League single-season record of 96 steals by swiping second base after singling in the third, and breaks it with a repeat performance in the seventh.

1978 - The Angels' 27-year-old outfielder Lyman Bostock, a .311 lifetime hitter, is killed by a shotgun blast while riding in a car in Gary, Indiana. The shot was meant for one of the other passengers in the car.

1979 - Lou Brock stole base No. 938, breaking Billy Hamilton's record, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Mets 7-4 in 10 innings.

1983 - Steve Carlton of Philadelphia posted his 300th career victory with a 6-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

1984 - The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 4-1, making Sparky Anderson the first manager ever to win more than 100 games in each league.

1986 - Rookie left-hander Jim Deshaies set a Major League record by striking out eight to start the game and finished with a two-hitter and 10 strikeouts to lead the Houston Astros past the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0.

1988 - Oakland's Jose Canseco becomes the founder of baseball's 40-homer, 40-stolen base club by stealing two bases in a 9-8, 14-inning win over Milwaukee. He also hits his 41st home run.

1992 - Bip Roberts tied the National League record with his 10th consecutive hit, then grounded out against Pedro Astacio to end his streak in the Cincinnati Reds' game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1997 - It's clinching day in Major League baseball. The Indians clinch their third consecutive American League Central title, the Mariners secure their second American League West crown in three years, and the Marlins are in the playoffs for the first time ever.

1998 - Houston's Craig Biggio became only the second player this century to have 50 steals and 50 doubles in a season, joining Hall of Famer Tris Speaker. Biggio, with 51 doubles, singled for his second hit of the game and easily stole his 50th base with two outs in the sixth.

          Daily Sports Roundup: September 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Ranked Miami meets Pittsburgh on the gridiron, while the Yankees battle the Rays, and The TOUR Championship gets going in Atlanta.

          Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The fourth week of the college football season kicks off on Thursday with No. 19 Miami at Pittsburgh. The Hurricanes (1-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from a 36-24 road loss to Ohio State last time out. Jacory Harris went 22-of-39 for 232 yards passing with one touchdown and four interceptions for Miami in that defeat. The Panthers (1-1 SU, 0-1-1 ATS) picked up an easy 38-16 home win over New Hampshire in their most recent game, as Tino Sunseri went 24-of-34 for 275 yards with two TDs and one INT. Miami is a 3-point road favorite for Thursday's game, with the total at 50.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Thursday has Seattle at Toronto, Kansas City at Cleveland, Texas at Oakland, and Tampa Bay at the Yankees. David Price (17-6, 2.79 ERA) will take on CC Sabathia (20-6, 3.05 ERA) in that Rays/Yankees matchup. Lefthander Price had to settle for a no-decision against the Yankees back on September 13 despite giving up just three hits over eight shutout innings. Tampa Bay is 8-2 in Price's last 10 starts. Lefthander Sabathia also picked up a no-decision in that September 13 contest, giving up only two hits over his eight scoreless innings. Sabathia fanned nine batters in that matchup, and New York has won seven of his last 10 games.

Over in the National League on Thursday it's St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Houston at Washington, San Francisco at the Cubs, Florida at Milwaukee, San Diego at the Dodgers, and Colorado at Arizona. Jeff Francis (4-5, 4.61 ERA) is slated to get the ball for the Rockies in that last matchup, while the Diamondbacks counter with Ian Kennedy (9-9, 3.79 ERA). Lefthander Francis was tagged with a loss by the Padres last time out, giving up two runs on five hits over just three innings of work. Righthander Kennedy is coming off a no-decision against the Pirates in which he gave up two runs in six innings.

          Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the PGA Tour wraps up its FedExCup playoffs starting on Thursday with The TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Phil Mickelson is pegged as the oddsmakers' 7/1 favorite to win this tournament, and he's also the defending champion. Steve Stricker and Dustin Johnson are tied for second at 9/1 odds to grab the win, with Matt Kuchar just behind that trio at 10/1 odds. Kuchar sits atop the FedExCup standings heading into the event, with Johnson, Charley Hoffman, Stricker, and Paul Casey rounding out the Top 5. Each of those five golfers can win the FedExCup with a victory in Atlanta this week. Mickelson sits in 10th place in the FedExCup standings right now.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

PADRES: (-110, O/U 7) San Diego is relatively new to meaningful September baseball, as it's been quite some time since this team was in a pennant chase. The Padres are showing some fortitude on this extended road trip, thus far going 5-5 SU. San Diego is 84-66 SU, including 42-34 SU on the road this season. The Padres are +20.10 and +8.88 units both SU and on the RL overall this year. This Padres pitching staff has only allowed 5 runs to the Dodgers over their past 5 meetings. Ace Mat Latos will look to extend that streak, as he is 14-7 SU with an ERA of 2.84 and a WHIP of 1.05 this year. The Padres are 20-8 in their last 28 games against a team with a losing record. San Diego is 5-12 in their last 17 games against a right-handed starter. The Padres are 5-0 in Latos' last 5 Thursday starts overall. The Padres are 9-1 in Latos' last 10 road starts against a team with a losing record. San Diego is 6-1 in Latos' last 7 starts during game 3 of a series. The Padres are 6-2 in Latos' last 8 starts with 5 days of rest.

Padres are 17-7 last 24 games during game 3 of a series.
Over is 4-1 last 5 games against the National League West.

Key Injuries - 3B Jerry Hairston (leg) is out.

Projected Score: 3 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

DODGERS: Los Angeles has sure let down their fan base, as so much was expected of this team this season. Unfortunately, the Dodgers are all but assured a 4th place finish in the National League West. Los Angeles is 73-78 SU this year, including 42-34 SU at home. The Dodgers are -15.63 and -19.65 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Hiroki Kuroda will make the home start tonight, as he is 10-13 SU with an ERA of 3.36 and a WHIP of 1.18 this year. The Dodgers are 2-5 in their last 7 games during game 3 of a series. Los Angeles is 2-5 in their last 7 Thursday games overall. The Dodgers are 8-20 in their last 28 games against a right-handed starter. Los Angeles is 1-5 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Dodgers are 4-1 in Kuroda's last 5 Thursday starts. Los Angeles is 2-6 in Kuroda's last 8 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Dodgers are 0-7 in Kuroda's last 7 starts against the National League West.

Dodgers are 8-20 last 28 games against the National League West.
Under is 21-7 last 28 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.

Key Injuries - C Russell Martin (hip) is out.

              Projected Score: 2
