NL Wild Card chase provides intriguing money lines

With time running out in the regular season, the race for the NL Wild Card is heating up. Atlanta holds a one-game lead over San Diego, with Colorado three games back entering Wednesday. The Rockies hope to close the gap on the Braves (and also their 2.5-game deficit in the NL West) when they send Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound in Arizona. Meanwhile, Atlanta looks to avoid a sweep in Philadelphia and keep its slim division title hopes alive. The Braves trail the Phillies by five games in the NL East.
        COLORADO ROCKIES (82-68)
        at ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (60-91)

        First pitch: 9:40 p.m. EDT
        Sports.com Line: Colorado -183, Arizona +173 Total: 9

After dropping its past two games, Colorado turns to ace Ubaldo Jimenez (19-6, 2.84 ERA) to stop the bleeding Wednesday night. Jimenez has a 4.42 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in his past three starts, but one of those outings was a strong performance against Arizona. Jimenez went six innings allowing one run on six hits while striking out eight. This was no surprise, as Jimenez has great career numbers against the Diamondbacks, going 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 14 starts (Colorado is 10-4 in those starts).

Rodrigo Lopez (6-14, 4.98 ERA) will be on the mound for Arizona. Lopez has three straight quality starts (2.79 ERA), but has just a 1-2 mark to show for it. He’s coming off a win in Cincinnati that saw him scatter eight hits over seven innings while giving up one run. Facing NL West foes has been a disaster for Lopez this year. He’s 0-8 in 13 starts with an ERA of 5.93. His success against the Rockies isn’t much better, 0-3 with a 4.19 ERA in three career starts.

The FoxSheets like the Rockies to pick up a much needed win:

Play On - All favorites with a money line of -150 or more (COLORADO) - with a starting pitcher who gives up 0.5 or less HR's/start, playing on Wednesday. (154-53 over the last 5 seasons.) (74.4%, +56.5 units. Rating = 2*).

        ATLANTA BRAVES (86-66)
        at PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (91-61)

        First pitch: 7:05 p.m. EDT
        Sports.com Line: Philadelphia -150, Atlanta +140 Total: 7.5

The Phillies look to finish off a sweep of the Braves and put them in an even deeper hole in the East when they give the ball to Roy Oswalt (13-13, 2.90 ERA) Wednesday. Oswalt has been magnificent lately, going 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA over his past three starts. Since a poor team debut at the end of July, Oswalt is 7-0 and the Phillies have won all nine times Oswalt has started. Oswalt has an ERA of 1.55 over this nine-game span.

Tommy Hanson (10-11, 3.62 ERA) and the Braves hope to salvage one game of the series and improve both their Wild Card and NL East position. Hanson is coming off a win against the Mets where he went six innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He was brilliant in his last start against Philadelphia on May 31, going 6.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits in a 9-3 Atlanta win. The Braves have won three of Hanson’s past four starts.

The FoxSheets give the edge to the Braves:

Play Against - Home teams with a money line of -100 to -150 (PHILADELPHIA) - starting a pitcher who gave up 1 or less earned runs last outing against opponent with a hot starting pitcher- WHIP <= 1.100 over his last 10 games. (49-33 over the last 5 seasons.) (59.8%, +22.8 units. Rating = 2*).

Preview: Giants (85-66) at Cubs (68-82)

            Game: 2
            Venue: Wrigley Field
            Date: September 22, 2010 8:05 PM EDT

After another brilliant pitching performance helped the San Francisco Giants win the first game on their final road trip of the regular season, the NL West leaders will turn to the club's most consistent starter over the past few weeks.

Jonathan Sanchez looks to win his fourth consecutive decision when he takes the ball for the Giants against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.

Matt Cain and three relievers combined on a two-hitter in San Francisco's 1-0 win Tuesday to stay one-half game ahead of second-place San Diego, which defeated Los Angeles. The Giants (85-66), who haven't won the division since 2003, increased their lead over the Rockies to 2 1/2 games, and San Francisco travels to Colorado for three games starting Friday.

"This is exciting,' Cain said. "We're all having a lot of fun.'

The Giants managed just five hits Tuesday, but Buster Posey's eighth-inning homer was all they needed. The rookie catcher has four homers and seven RBIs in his last 10 games, and five RBIs in as many games against the Cubs (68-82) this season.

Although the Giants won, it was the seventh time in 10 games they plated two runs or fewer. They've won six of these contests thanks to a pitching staff that's posted a 1.01 ERA.

San Francisco boasts a major league-best 1.57 ERA this month, and Sanchez (11-8, 3.21 ERA) has been instrumental to that success.

In his last four starts, Sanchez is 2-0 with a 0.67 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 27 innings. Opponents are batting .146 against him over that stretch, and Sanchez's .207 opponents' batting average this year is tops in the majors.

In Thursday's 10-2 win over the Dodgers, Sanchez allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. The left-hander, who is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA in six starts since losing to San Diego on Aug. 13, also struck out a career-high 12 and walked none.

"That shows you he's pounding the strike zone and throwing any pitch at any time," manager Bruce Bochy told the Giants' official website. "He's pitching with a lot of confidence and going after the hitters.

"He throws hard and he has his secondary pitches working. With that kind of stuff, when you're locating, you're going to be tough."

In his only career start against Chicago on May 4, 2009, Sanchez allowed four runs, five hits and six walks in four innings of a 4-2 loss.

The Cubs (68-81) saw their season-best six-game winning streak end Tuesday. Kosuke Fukudome and Blake DeWitt provided the only hits for a Chicago team that had averaged 6.5 runs in its previous six.

San Francisco knocked around scheduled starter Randy Wells (7-13, 4.46) last month, but the right-hander is coming off one of his best outings of 2010.

Wells allowed one run, five hits and no walks in eight innings of a 7-2 victory on Sept. 14 in St. Louis. It was just the second win in 10 starts for Wells, who has endured a very rocky second season.

"Pitching is all about confidence,' he said. "I've gone through some stretches where I haven't had a whole lot of confidence."

One of Wells' worst efforts this year came in San Francisco on Aug. 12, when he was tagged for seven runs and eight hits - including two homers by Pat Burrell and a solo shot by Pablo Sandoval - in five innings. The Giants went on to an 8-7 win.
