Bettors’ best friend: Monday’s wagering tips

    Lines to watch
San Francisco 49ers opened as a 4.5-point underdog but are now listed as high as +6.

    Weather to watch
No current weather concerns for Monday’s action.

    Who’s hot
New Orleans Saints are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 meetings with the San Francisco 49ers.
St. Louis Cardinals are 12-4 in their last 16 meetings in Florida.
Philadelphia Phillies are 40-15 in their last 55.
Tampa Bay Rays are 10-1 in their last 11 Monday games.
Cincinnati Reds are 11-1 in their last 12 meetings with Milwaukee Brewers.
Minnesota Twins are 38-13 in their last 51.
Texas Rangers are 8-1 over their last nine.

    Who’s not
Washington Nationals are 2-8 in their last 10.
Kansas City Royals are 6-22 in their last 28 road games.
Boston Red Sox are 2-7 in their last 9 road games.
Chicago White Sox are 15-37 in their last 52 meetings in Oakland.

    Key stat
252 – Career home runs for Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard through 863 games. That is more dingers than anyone has had through that span in MLB history. Howard has 30 homers in 131 games this season.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked
Joe Mauer (knee) Minnesota Twins – Mauer left Sunday’s game with a jammed left knee and is considered day-to-day. Mauer sits second in the AL with a .331 batting average.

    Game of the day
New Orleans at San Francisco 49ers (+5.5, 44)

    Notable quotable
“I don’t know who’s gonna play quarterback next week. It won’t be me.” – Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin following Sunday’s 19-11 win over Tennessee. Denis Dixon fumbled twice before leaving the game with a knee injury. He’s scheduled for an MRI this week. Veteran Charlie Batch came into the game after Dixon left.

    Tips and notes
The New Orleans Saints are 5-2 on Monday Night Football since Sean Payton came to town in 2006 and have won their last three MNF appearances dating back to 2008. This season’s schedule has been pretty sweet to the Saints so far. They haven’t played since the season opener on Sept. 9, leading some of the Saints to dub this stretch their bonus bye week.

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has given the New Orleans Saints some bulletin board material. “"I strongly believe we have the better team going into this game,'' Davis told reporters Saturday. “It's exciting because we know that they're competitive. But we're not worried about them being Super Bowl champion or anything like that." However, Saints are 10-2 against the spread in their last 12 matchups with the 49ers.

The Colorado Rockies have strengthened their bullpen by acquiring Octavio Dotel from the L.A. Dodgers for a player to be named later. Dotel had 22 saves in 28 opportunities with a 3.99 ERA this season. He won’t be on the club’s playoff roster, but should be a big help for the stretch run.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Cole Hamels (11-10, 3.01 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

This former World Series MVP is peaking at just the right time for the Phillies. Hamels is 4-0 in his last four starts and he struck out 13 in 6 2/3 innings his last time out on the bump.

"He's locked in right now. It's fun to see," Phillies closer Brad Lidge told the Associated Press. "He has complete command and confidence with all his pitches."

Oddsmakers are pricing Hamels pretty high these days, so a look at the under might be the better option. The Phils have played below the total in seven of the southpaw’s last eight appearances.

Jered Weaver (12-11, 2.91 ERA), Los Angeles Angels

Weaver entered the season as a questionable No. 1 but he’s proven he’s a bona fide ace. The slumping Halos don’t always cash in when he takes the hill. The team is just 5-5 in his last 10 starts even though he allowed two runs or less in seven of those games.

A play on the total seems like another good option here. The under is 14-0-2 in Weaver’s last 16 starts.

      Slumping

Gavin Floyd (10-13, 4.01 ERA), Chicago White Sox

Everything smells bad in the south side of Chicago these days and Gavin Floyd is no different. The White Sox are 2-5 in Floyd's last seven starts. The big righty has given up 22 hits and 11 earned runs in his last 11 1/3 innings pitched.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Atlanta at Philadelphia (-165, 8)

The Atlanta Braves finally got the clutch hitting they thought they were getting when they traded for Derrek Lee. The first baseman hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning to give the Braves a 6-3 win over the Mets on Sunday afternoon. The win moved Atlanta three games back of the Phillies heading into this week’s huge series.

"It's always nice when you feel one come off the bat like that," Lee told reporters. "It's no secret. These are big games. We need them all. It feels nice to contribute. This was a nice start to the road trip, these three games, but we've got to keep it going."

It was only Lee’s second home run since joining the Braves on Aug. 18.

      Pick: Braves

Texas at Los Angeles Angels (-145, 7.5)

Texas slugger Josh Hamilton said his bruised ribcage was feeling a bit better on Sunday, but there’s still no timetable for his return. The Rangers should know more Monday when Hamilton has another examination.

"It feels better as far as everyday stuff like rolling over in bed and getting out of bed,” Hamilton told reporters Sunday. “This is the first day since I ran and swung a little bit [on Tuesday] that I've started feeling better. But it’s one of those things that when I start to feel better, if I try to do something, I have a setback.”

Hamilton is hitting .361 with 31 homers and 97 RBIs this year.

      Pick: Angels

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 20 in Baseball History...

      1902 - Chicago's Jim Callahan tossed the White Sox's first no-hitter, beating Detroit 2-0.

1905 - Chicago White Sox president Charles Comiskey orders a houseboat built for the express purpose of transporting and housing the team during spring training.

1908 - Frank Smith of the Chicago White Sox threw his second career no-hitter for a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics.

1919 - Babe Ruth ties Ned Williamson Major League mark of 27 home runs with a game-winner off Lefty Williams of the White Sox. Four days later he will hit number 28 over the roof of the Polo Grounds.

1922 - Rogers Hornsby is stopped by Burleigh Grimes of Brooklyn after hitting in 33 straight games.

1924 - Grover Alexander won his 300th game as the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Giants 7-3 in 12 innings.

1927 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees hit his 60th home run of the season, breaking the record he set in 1921. Ruth homered off Washington's Tom Zachary.

1931 - Lou Gehrig drives in four runs to break his old American League RBI mark of 175, set in 1927. By the season's end he will have a total of 184.

1951 - The owners elect National League President Ford Frick as the third commissioner of baseball for a seven-year term at $65,000 per annum.

1953 - Ernie Banks of the Cubs hits his first Major League home run against Gerry Staley, but the Cards win 11-6.

1955 - Giants slugger Willie Mays poles two home runs against the Pirates, giving him 50 for the year, making him the seventh player in history to accomplish this.

1958 - Hoyt Wilhelm of the Baltimore Orioles pitched a 1-0 no-hitter against the New York Yankees at Memorial Stadium, with the only run coming on a home run by Gus Triandos.

1961 - The 155th Yankees game of 1961 (including a tie) is Roger Maris' last chance to beat Babe Ruth, in compliance with Commissioner Ford Frick's statement that, for the record to be broken, Maris must do it in the same number of games as Ruth. Maris' 59th home run of the year, off Jack Fisher, is short of the record, but helps New York beat Baltimore 4-2 as the Yankees clinch their 26th American League pennant.

1968 - Mickey Mantle hit his last home run in the Major Leagues, a solo shot against Boston's Jim Lonborg. Mantle had 536 homers.

1969 - Bob Moose of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitched a 4-0 no-hitter against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.

1980 - George Brett goes 0-for-4 in a 9-0 loss to the A's to drop his average below .400 for good. He is now hitting .396 and will finish the season at .390.

1984 - The Padres clinch their first National League West title since entering the league in 1969 with a 5-4 win over the Giants. The key blow is winning pitcher Tim Lollar's three-run home run, his third home run of the season.

1988 - Wade Boggs became the first player this century to get 200 hits in six consecutive seasons as the Boston Red Sox pounded Toronto 13-2. Boggs also joined Lou Gehrig as the only players to get 200 hits and 100 walks in three consecutive years.

1992 - Philadelphia second baseman Mickey Morandini made the first unassisted triple play in the National League in 65 years, just the ninth in Major League history, in the Phillies' 3-2, 13-inning loss to Pittsburgh.

1998 - Cal Ripken, Jr. took himself out of the starting lineup and did not play in the Baltimore Orioles' loss to the New York Yankees, ending his consecutive-game streak at 2,632 games. After nearly 16 years, Ripken said he decided the time was right to end the streak, which began on May 30, 1982.

          Daily Sports Roundup: September 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Braves begin a series in Philadelphia, the Yankees play the Rays again, and Monday Night Football takes place in San Francisco.

          Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Monday Night Football this week sees the defending-champion Saints hitting the road for a game against the Niners in San Francisco. The Saints (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) picked up a 14-9 home win over Minnesota in their first game of the season, with Drew Brees going 27-of-36 for 237 yards passing with one touchdown strike. Pierre Thomas rushed for 71 yards and a score for New Orleans in that game. The Niners (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) were throttled 31-6 on the road by Seattle in their Week 1 contest, with Alex Smith good on 26-of-45 pass attempts for 225 yards and two interceptions. Frank Gore ran for just 38 yards on 17 carries in that defeat. Oddsmakers have the Saints pegged as the 5.5-point road favorites for Monday night's game, with the total for the matchup at 44 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule offers up six games on Monday, with Kansas City at Detroit, Baltimore at Boston, Cleveland at Minnesota, the White Sox at Oakland, Texas at the Angels, and Tampa Bay at the Yankees. The Rays' Matt Garza (14-8, 3.88 ERA) is expected to take on the Yankees' Ivan Nova (1-0, 4.30 ERA) in that last contest. Righthander Garza was knocked around by New York in his last trip to the mound, surrendering six runs on nine hits over just 4 2-3 innings of work in a no-decision. Righthander Nova was Garza's opposition in that contest, and he also picked up a no-decision after allowing six runs on six hits over 4 2-3 innings. Nova struck out two hitters.

Over in the National League on Monday it's then St. Louis at Florida, Houston at Washington, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, and Atlanta at Philadelphia. The Braves are slated to send Jair Jurrjens (7-6, 4.64 ERA) to the hill in that key divisional clash, with the Phillies countering with Cole Hamels (11-10, 3.01 ERA). Righthander Jurrjens is coming off a loss to the Nationals in which he gave up four runs on nine hits over just five innings of work. Lefthander Hamels dominated the Marlins in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering just one run on five hits over his 6 2-3 innings while fanning 13.

            Monday's six-pack

-- You might see call for elimination of maple bats in big leagues after Cubs' Tyler Colvin was impaled in chest by a broken bat Sunday.

--Casper Wells of Schenectady hit his 3rd HR Sunday night; so far, he is hitting .344 for the Tigers, with a .391 on-base %age.

-- Joe Mauer's left Sunday's game with a sore knee, very bad news for the Twins, as they march towards the playoffs.

-- Houston Cougars lost their top two QBs for season Saturday night at UCLA. Case Keenum tore his ACL, his backup broke a collarbone.

-- SMU football coach June Jones still coaches with a Hawai'an floral thing around his neck, just like when he was at Hawai'i.

-- With two weeks to go, here are how baseball playoffs shape up:
NL: Phillies-Cincinnati-San Francisco-Atlanta, but Giants only lead Padres by half-game in NL West.
            AL: Bronx-Minnesota-Texas-Tampa Bay

            **************************************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

            13) Weird stat of the week, maybe of the year; three teams didn't score an offensive TD Sunday. Three out of 30. They all won.

            12) Patriot offense in 1st half: 35 plays, 216 yards, 14 points.
Patriot offense in second half: 23 plays, 98 yards, no points, turned ball over three times on five drives.

            11) Bears averaged 9.3/9.0 yards per pass attempt in first two games-- the difference between Weeks 1 and 2? They didn't turn the ball over in Dallas Sunday, and scored 27 points. They turned ball over four times against Detroit, and damn near lost at home to the Lions.

            10) 11 teams turned ball 3+ times Sunday; of the 11, only the Chargers won, and that was because they forced six Jacksonville turnovers. San Diego averaged 10.9 yards/pass attempt on a dry field at home.

            9) Tampa Bay is 2-0 because they were plus in turnovers in both games, and moved chains enough (13-31 on 3rd down) to win field position. In last week's game, they won field position by 13 yards; yesterday, +9.

            8) Ravens have two TDs on 24 drives, scoring 10 points in both games so far this season. Flacco completed only 17 of 39 passes yesterday, in a dreadful performance (averaged only 3.8 yards/pass attempt).

            7) Road teams that won in Week 1 were 6-6; road teams that lost were 1-2, with only the Eagles winning. Favorites were 5-9-1 vs spread, with over 8-7 (four of five 4:00 games and the Sunday night game went over).

            6) In the first 0:37 of Steeler-Titan game, Pittsburgh ran a kickoff back for a TD, Tennessee fumbled the ball back to the Steelers and there was a fairly big scuffle between the teams. All in 37 seconds. It was then you knew the day was going to be a long one for Jeff Fisher.

            5) Steelers had 21 yards passing; Dixon left on a cart, so Charlie Batch is the man in Pittsburgh for two more weeks, unless they bring Leftwich back Monday, which they probably will.

            4) Lions were down 35-17 with 5:00 left, but scored 15 points to cover spread, and even recovered an onside kick to have shot at the unlikely win. Rookie RB Jahvid Best has been terrific for Detroit team that has gotten better, just not good enough to win a game yet.

            3) Interesting to see if Minnesota coaches can keep the ship afloat after the Vikings' 0-2 start. Two TDs on 20 drives (with five turnovers) won't endear teammates to QB who basically refused to come to training camp to practice. They had ball in Miami red zone five times Sunday, scored only 10 points. Not good.

            2) Game of the Day was undoubtedly Houston-Washington, first game since 1994 where both teams passed for 400+ yards. Matt Schaub was 38-52 for 497 yards for the Texans, who were down 20-7 at the half.

            1) NFL has baby-fied pro football to point where you can't touch QB once he throws the ball; QB's routinely flop every time they're touched now, and referees are only so glad to toss a flag for roughing. Football is a violent game; take that away, and the game suffers.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

RAYS: Tampa Bay has gone 8-6 SU this year against the Yankees, with six of those wins coming as the listed underdog. The Rays have been alternating wins and losses of late, and stand 89-59 SU on the year. Tampa has played exceptionally well on the road this season, going 43-30 SU. Tampa is +7.78 and -1.96 units both SU and on the RL overall this year. Pitcher Matt Garza will make the road start tonight, as he looks to get back into his typical fine form. Garza is 14-8 SU on the season, with an ERA of 3.88 and a WHIP of 1.24 this season. The Rays are 9-1 in their last 10 Monday games overall. The Rays are 23-9 in their last 32 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Tampa is 1-4 in their last 5 road games against a right-handed starter. The Rays are 13-3 in Garza's last 16 starts with 5 days of rest. The Rays are 2-5 in Garza's last 7 starts against the American League East. Tampa is 2-9 in Garza's last 11 road starts against a team with a winning record.

Rays are 13-6 last 19 games against a team with a winning record.

Key injuries - RF Gabe Kapler (ankle) is out.

Projected Score: 5 (SIDE of the Day)

YANKEES: (-125, O/U 9) New York has the best record in baseball at 90-59 SU this season. The bad news is the simple fact that they play in the American League East. New York is being pushed by their opponent today, the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays are only 0.5 games behind for the AL East division lead. The Yankees have been on the road for their past 9 games, so they are no doubt excited to be back at home. The Yankees are +1.75 and +18.22 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Righty Ivan Nova will take the mound tonight, as the Yankees gone 4-1 SU in games started by him this year. The Yankees are 90-35 in their last 125 home games overall. The Yankees are 8-3 in their last 11 games against a right-handed starter. New York is 42-18 in their last 60 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days. The Yankees are 4-11 in their last 15 during game 1 of a series. New York is 1-6 in their last 7 Monday games. The Yankees are 4-0 in Nova's last 4 starts.

Yankees are 41-17 last 58 home games against a team with a winning road record.
Under is 6-2 last 8 games against the American League East.

Key injuries - 3B Alex Rodriguez (rest) is probable.

                    Projected Score: 4
