CFL Odds Preview: Eskimos at Alouettes

The Edmonton Eskimos will try and capture their first win on the road this season when they go up against the first place Montreal Alouettes. This Week 12 matchup is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19 at Percival-Molson Memorial Stadium in Montreal with kickoff set for 1 p.m. (PT).

Edmonton was finally able to put some points on the board last week but it was not enough as the Eskimos lost to Calgary 36-20. They came into the game as a 10-point home underdog and the total crept ‘over’ the 54-point line. This latest loss dropped Edmonton to 2-8 straight up on the season as it now has the dubious distinction of having the worst record in the league.

The Eskimos are a bit better against the spread at 3-7. They are 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS on the road and the total has gone ’over’ in seven of their 10 games this year.

Montreal finally proved it can win without QB Anthony Calvillo in the lineup as the Alouettes rallied behind backup QB Adrian McPherson and a stout defense to come away with a 27-6 win over Hamilton last week as a 3-½ point road underdog. The CFL odds total stayed ‘under’ the 51 ½-point line.

The defending Grey Cup champions are now 7-3 SU and 5-5 ATS on the year. They lead the East Division by two games over the Hamilton and Toronto. Montreal is 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS in its last five home games. The total is 5-4-1 over the past 10 games.

These two teams played one another in Week 2 in Edmonton. Montreal covered as a six-point road favorite in a 33-23 victory. The total went over the 55-point line by a single point. The Alouettes actually trailed 23-11 late in the third quarter, but were able to run off 22 straight points to come away with the win. The play that broke the Eskimos’ back was a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jerald Brown midway through the fourth quarter that gave Montreal the lead for good.

The Alouettes come into this game ranked second in total points per game on offense and total points allowed on defense, while the Eskimos are ranked dead last in both categories. Even with Calvillo still listed as day-to-day for this game, Montreal has a distinct advantage of both sides of the ball in this one.

Sportsinteractions.com has Montreal favored by 12 ½ points and the ‘over/under’ is at 53. The Alouettes have won four out of the last six games in this series both SU and ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of the last four games between the two.

This is a game that Montreal can win without Calvillo in the lineup so expect him to rest his bruised sternum for one more week. His absence will most likely keep the total down, but it will not keep the Alouettes from covering the 12 ½ points at home.

CFL Odds Preview: Bombers at Argonauts

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are looking to get back into the playoff hunt with a win over the East Division rival Toronto Argonauts. This Week 12 matchup is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto with kickoff at 10 a.m. (PT).

Winnipeg is coming off a shocking 31-2 win over Saskatchewan as a four-point home underdog. The total stayed way under the 56 ½-point line. The win moves the Blue Bombers to 3-7 straight up and 4-5 against the spread on the year.

Despite the fact that they are still in last place in the East, they are only two games behind both Hamilton and Toronto for second place in the division. Winnipeg’s main problem has been its inability to win away from home, as the Bombers are 0-5 SU and 2-3 ATS on the road this year. The total is 5-4-1 in their last 10 games with three of their last five games staying ‘under.’

Toronto has taken a harsh step back to reality after losing its third straight game last week. The Argonauts were blown out by the B.C. Lions 37- 16 in a game they were 4 ½ point road underdogs. The total went ‘over’ the 49-point line. They are now 5-5 both SU and ATS this season and 3-1 SU and ATS at home. The total has been split evenly at 5-5 over their previous 10 games, but has gone ‘over’ in three of their last five.

These two teams met in Week 2 with Toronto pulling out a 36-34 win as a 10 ½-point road underdog. The total for this game went well over the 46 ½ point line. The hero in this game was Argonaut rookie QB Cleo Lemon, who completed 15-of 23 pass attempts for 162 yards as well as adding a nine yard run for a score. The play that helped seal the win for Toronto was Chad Owens’s 117-yard touchdown return of a missed field goal early in the fourth.

Bombers’ QB Buck Pierce threw for 366 yards and three TD’s in the losing effort.

Statistically, the Blue Bombers come into this game with the third highest scoring offense in the league. Their defense is ranked sixth in points allowed. The Argonauts are ranked seventh in both points scored and points allowed giving you the impression that some of their five wins are the product of some smoke and mirrors on their part.

Sportsinteraction.com has this game currently listed as a ‘pick’ on the CFL betting board with an ‘under/over’ line of 52 ½. This series has been extremely even the past few seasons as these two teams have evenly split the last 10 games both SU and ATS. The home team has gone 4-6 both SU and ATS giving a slight advantage to the visitor.

The slight edge in this game has to go to Winnipeg as it comes into this game with a bit more momentum than Toronto. The Bombers are starting to generate some consistent offense while the Argo’s offense appears to be holding on for dear life as they have been held to under 17 points in each of their last three games. Winnipeg grinds out a much-needed win on the road in a low scoring battle.

MLB Odds: Surging Rockies at LA Dodgers

The hits just keep on coming for Troy Tulowitzki and the Colorado Rockies.

Tulowitzki popped a first inning home run in Friday's series opener at the Los Angeles Dodgers, his 12th of the month, and the Rockies went on to take a 7-5 victory. Colorado closed as 135 MLB odds favorites behind ace Ubaldo Jimenez who picked up his 19th win of the 2010 campaign.

Friday's victory lifted the Rocks to 1½-games behind the Giants in the NL West, with the sinking Padres between Colorado and San Francisco. The Rockies trailed Atlanta by a game for the NL wild card entering Saturday's action that had Colorado 125 chalk in the pitching matchup between rookies Jhoulys Chacin (9-9, 3.53) and John Ely (8-7, 4.62).

Colorado might just have the two best young position players in all of baseball in Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez. Tulo is hitting over .350 since Aug. 1, and he's got 29 RBI in 16 September games to go with his dozen dingers. Gonzalez, who is nursing a sore right wrist and thumb, was batting a robust .467 this month heading into Game 2 of the series and led his red-hot teammate by 17 points in the NL batting title race entering Saturday's contest.

The pair will face Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw (16-14, 2.85) in Sunday afternoon's series finale. It will be Kershaw's fourth assignment versus the Rockies this season with the Dodgers victorious in the previous four.

Two of four starts came at Chavez Ravine with Kershaw tossing scoreless baseball in his 15 innings combined. The Dodgers were slight 105 underdogs in LA on May 9 when they haded Jimenez his first loss of the season in a two-zip contest. Los Angeles was pronounced 165 chalk on Aug. 17 in a 6-0 win.

Jason Hammel (16-11, 4.45) will be making his third go against the Dodgers this season with Colorado winners in the other two. The right-hander worked into the sixth inning in LA on Aug. 29, allowing two runs and striking out seven in the Rockies' 10-5 triumph.

The weatherman is calling for partly cloudy skies and no chance of rain in the Los Angeles area for Sunday afternoon. Thermometers should tickle 80ºF at their warmest with westerly winds at 8-10 mph (3B across to 1B).

Tim Welke should have plate duty for Sunday's finale. Now in his 28th MLB season, Welke has been fairly level between home teams and visitors on the season, 17-14 in favor of the home squads for a loss of about a third of a unit.

He's been prone to the 'over' at an 18-11-2 clip, including 9-4-1 with a 'total' set at eight or less. Four have his last five plate assignments have finished above the closing number.

Both teams take Monday off before beginning new series on Tuesday. The Dodgers will remain at home and start a huge set with the Padres. Clayton Richard (15-15, 3.70) is on tap for San Diego in Tuesday's opener; Los Angeles counters with Chad Billingsley (14-14, 3.55).

The Rockies will make the short trek from LA to Phoenix and open a series with the Diamondbacks. Jorge De La Rosa (11-7, 4.25) gets the call for Jim Tracy's troops opposite Joe Saunders (2-8, 4.88) for Arizona.
