Wisconsin’s starting wide receivers – Both Nick Toon and David Gilreath will miss Saturday’s game against Arizona State. It will be the second game in a row that Toon has missed with turf toe, while Gilreath suffered a concussion against San Jose State and was taken off the field on a stretcher.

    Game of the day

    Texas at Texas Tech

    Notable quotable

"It has been an incredible honor to wear the Dodger uniform and I will always carry with me some very special memories from the past three seasons. This was not a decision I took lightly but I believe it's the right one for myself and my family and I'm truly thrilled that Donnie will be the one leading the Dodgers. It's time that the Dodgers had a new voice and I have the utmost confidence in him. I know he's ready for the challenge." – Joe Torre on turning over Dodgers managerial duties to Don Mattingly at the end of the season.

    Tips and notes

San Diego Padres starter Chris Young is set to return to the mound Saturday after hitting the DL during the first week of the season with a strained right shoulder. He allowed one hit over six scoreless innings in his only start of the year. "This was a goal of mine," Young said. "But just going through it all [rehabilitation] and just being satisfied being out there isn't enough. I'm not going to take it for granted."

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin (hip) is set to have a big role in Sunday’s game against Miami. The Vikes plan to use him set up wide, in the slot, and at running back for some plays. Harvin had only one catch for 12 yards in Week 1. The Vikings are set as a 5.5-point favorite.

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks (ankle) will be a game-time decision in Week 2. He was limited in his return to practice on Friday. The Giants are set as a 5-point underdog for their Sunday Night matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

David Price (17-6, 2.75 ERA), Tampa Bay Rays

Price is 2-0 in his last three starts with 0.82 ERA, while striking out 13. Batters are hitting just .123 against him this month. He threw eight innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits. Price faced the minimum of batters through six innings.

Tim Lincecum (14-9, 3.60 ERA), San Francisco Giants

Lincecum has turned it around after a terrible August. He has won three straight starts with a 2.08 ERA and 29 strikeouts over that span. Lincecum held the Padres to only one run over seven innings in his last trip to the mound, while striking out nine.

      Slumping

Dallas Braden (9-12, 3.56 ERA), Oakland Athletics

Braden heads into his start on Saturday against the Twins having lost three straight. He allowed four earned runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings and walked four in a 5-3 loss to Boston the last time he took the ball.

Tim Hudson (15-8, 2.62 ERA) Atlanta Braves

Hudson is coming off his worst start of the season, giving up six runs and two homers in a 7-3 loss to St. Louis Cardinals. He has just one win in his last five, posting a 5.17 ERA over that stretch.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Cincinnati at Houston (-145, 8)

Dusty Baker may not like how his closer Francisco Cordero is throwing right now, but he isn’t ready to hit the panic button just yet. Cordero has allowed six runs over his last four outings. Baker dismissed the notion of moving rookie fireballer Aroldis Chapman into the closing role, at least for now.

“There’s already enough stirring up when he (Cordero) comes in the game,” Baker told reporters. “As soon as he gives up one ball or one hit, the boos start. That can’t help.”

Cincinnati’s bullpen ERA checks in at 4.06, 16th in the league.

      Pick: Reds

      Washington at Philadephia (-165, 9)

Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan began serving an eight-game suspension on Friday and won’t be back in the lineup until Sept. 25. Morgan had been appealing two separate suspensions, eight games for his part in the Sept. 1 brawl against the Florida Marlins, and another seven games for hitting a fan with a ball in Philadelphia.

The league upheld the eight-game ban, but dismissed the other suspension. Morgan is going through the worst season of his career, hitting .258 with 23 RBIs and 33 stolen bases.

"I will be with the team and roll on. I will show support," Morgan said. "I will take batting practice and then watch the game."

      Pick: Under

1909 - Ty Cobb wins the Triple Crown with a .377 batting average, nine home runs and 107 RBI. He also leads the American League with 216 hits, 116 runs and 296 total bases.

1922 - George Sisler's 41-game hit streak is stopped by New York's Joe Bush, the same pitcher the St. Louis Browns first baseman had started the streak against on July 27. Whitey Witt, his head bandaged from being hit by a bottle, drives in two in the ninth for a 3-2 Yankees' win.

1930 - New York pitcher Red Ruffing hit two home runs as the Yankees edged the St. Louis Browns 7-6 in 10 innings.

1954 - The Cleveland Indians clinched the American League pennant with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1956 - Mickey Mantle hits his 50th home run, making him the eighth player to do so, in the eleventh inning off Chicago's Billy Pierce. New York wins 3-2 to clinch another pennant. Mickey Mantle will win the Triple Crown with a .353 batting average, 52 home runs and 130 RBI.

1963 - The New York Mets lost their last game at the Polo Grounds to the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1, in front of only 1,752.

1965 - On Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium, 50,180 fans see Mantle play his 2,000th game.

1968 - Ray Washburn pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park, one day after the Giants' Gaylord Perry tossed a no-hitter against Washburn's St. Louis Cardinals.

1976 - In his last Major League appearance as a player, Cleveland manager Frank Robinson pinch-hits in the eighth inning and singles against Rudy May of the Orioles.

1977 - Spoiling Brooks Robinson Night in Baltimore, Boston's Ted Cox goes 4-for-4 in his first Major League game, a 10-4 win over the Orioles. Cox will get two more hits the following day against the Yankees, setting a Major League record for consecutive hits at the start of a career.

1984 - The Detroit Tigers clinched the American League East Division with a 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, making the Tigers only the fourth team in Major League history to lead from start to finish. The other three were the 1923 New York Giants, 1927 New York Yankees and the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers.

1987 - Detroit's Darrell Evans became the first 40-year-old player in Major League history to hit 30 home runs in a season as the Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6.

1993 - The Yankees trail the Red Sox 3-1 in the ninth inning when Mike Stanley hits a popup to left field. Just before the pitch, a fan runs onto the field and umpire Tim Welke calls timeout, so the last out doesn't count. The Yankees rally for three runs and the Red Sox lose the game as well as the protest filed by the team.

1996 - Roger Clemens equaled his own Major League record, striking out 20 batters and pitching a four-hitter to lead Boston over the Detroit Tigers 4-0.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 18

Hamilton Tiger Cats at B.C. Lions (-3.5, 49.5)

After a miserable start, the Lions now seem back on track with consecutive wins against Montreal and Toronto. B.C. QB Casey Printers looks like a QB still recovering from a knee injury out on the field but he’s been opportunistic.

Meanwhile the Tiger-Cats aren't getting as much as they would like from RB DeAndra’ Cobb and WR Matt Carter, who was injured in the Alouettes game and won’t be available.

DE Garrett McIntyre also got hurt last week and remains doubtful. But the team did improve defensively by signing DE Stevie Bagg who registered 12 sacks and 55 tackles last season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The TiCats won their last two games against the Lions last season but had lost the nine previous meetings.

        Pick: B.C.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts (-1, 51.5)

A game against Winnipeg is just what the doctor ordered for the slumping Argos. Toronto looks to snap its three-game losing streak against at home vs. the Blue Bombers.

But Winnipeg just knocked out off Saskatchewan with Steven Jyles taking snaps at QB. The Bombers will show up in Toronto playing with house money. They've got nothing to lose.

And it's not like the Argos are striking fear into opponents. All the good the Argos did at the start of the season seem like a distant memory now.

QB Cleo Lemon is multiplying mistakes and gaffes with every game. And RB Cory Boyd, who was so sensational earlier on, will not play after because of a concussion. Toronto will also be without OT Rob Murphy, DT Adriano Belli and possibly SB Jeremaine Copeland.

        Pick: Winnipeg

        SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 19

Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes (-12, 52.5)

If all goes according to the plan, QB Anthony Calvillo will be back behind center after missing two games because of a bruised sternum. The veteran pivot says he feels fine and will wear new shoulder pads that should provide better protection.

The swift and elusive Adrian McPherson showed last week he can be a bigger part of Montreal's offense with or without Calvillo on the field.

The Eskimos do have a new GM in Eric Tillman and you can bet some players will try to impress the new boss but the real immediate reinforcement might come from Fred Stamps, who's expected back after missing the last two games due to injury. Stamps was the easier the best receiver in the CFL in 2009.

To replace Arkee Whitlock and Chris Ciezki, the Eskimos will likely go to RB Daniel Porter; a former star from Louisiana Tech. Safety Elliott Richardson should also be back in the formation after missing nine games because of a wrist fracture.

        Pick: Montreal

            Daily Sports Roundup: September 18

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Iowa takes on Arizona in a battle of ranked teams, while No. 1 Alabama pays a visit to Duke, and Ohio State looks for a victory over Ohio.

            Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College football's only ranked matchup for Saturday has No. 9 Iowa (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) at No. 24 Arizona (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS). The Hawkeyes picked up their second straight win with a 35-7 home drubbing of Iowa State last weekend; Ricky Stanzi was good on 11-of-18 pass attempts for 204 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa in that game, while Adam Robinson ran for 156 yards and a score. The Wildcats destroyed Citadel 52-6 at home last time out, with Nic Grigsby running for 107 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries. The oddsmakers have Iowa pegged as a 1.5-point road favorite for this contest.

Top-ranked Alabama (-24) will be on the road against Duke on Saturday afternoon, while No. 2 Ohio State (-30.5) plays host to visiting Ohio. Elsewhere around the Top 25 on Saturday it'll be Maryland at No. 21 West Virginia (-9.5), Kent State at No. 22 Penn State (-21), Massachusetts at No. 20 Michigan (-27.5), No. 12 Arkansas at Georgia (-2.5), Air Force at No. 7 Oklahoma (-17), Arizona State at No. 11 Wisconsin (-14), No. 18 USC (-13) at Minnesota, No. 8 Nebraska (-3) at Washington, No. 10 Florida (-14) at Tennessee, Baylor at No. 4 TCU (-21.5), Louisville at No. 25 Oregon State (-19.5), Portland State at No. 5 Oregon (-52), Furman at No. 13 South Carolina (-32), Mississippi State at No. 15 LSU (-7.5), Clemson at No. 16 Auburn (-7.5), No. 14 Utah (-22.5) at New Mexico, No. 6 Texas (-3.5) at Texas Tech, No. 23 Houston (-3) at UCLA, Wake Forest at No. 19 Stanford (-17), and finally No. 3 Boise State (-23.5) at Wyoming.

As well, there's one Canadian Football League game on the schedule for Saturday, with Hamilton at British Columbia. The Tiger-Cats (5-5 SU, 5-5 ATS) are listed as the 3.5-point road underdogs against the Lions (3-7 SU, 4-6 ATS), with the total pegged at 49.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Detroit at the White Sox, the Yankees at Baltimore, Cleveland at Kansas City, Toronto at Boston, the Angels at Tampa Bay, Texas at Seattle, and Oakland at Minnesota. Dallas Braden (9-12, 3.56 ERA) is slated to take on Kevin Slowey (12-6, 4.24 ERA) in that Athletics/Twins matchup. Lefthander Braden has picked up the loss in each of his past three starts, giving up four runs on six hits over 5 2-3 innings of work last time out against the Red Sox. Righthander Slowey grabbed a win against the Indians in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering just two unearned runs on six hits over five innings of work. Slowey fanned five in that game.

The National League on Saturday then offers up Colorado at the Dodgers, San Diego at St. Louis, Atlanta at the Mets, Arizona at Pittsburgh, Washington at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at Houston, the Cubs at Florida, and Milwaukee at San Francisco. Yovani Gallardo (12-7, 3.64 ERA) is expected to get the ball for the Brewers on Saturday, while the Giants counter with Tim Lincecum (14-9, 3.60 ERA). Righthander Gallardo blanked the Cubs on four hits over seven innings in his most recent start, striking out six batters in the win. Righthander Lincecum picked up his third straight victory last time out, holding the Padres to one run on seven hits in seven innings of work, and fanning nine.

              8) Underdogs were 5-1-1 vs spread in Week 1 NFL games, 2-5-2 in the games that weren't divisional rivalries. Overall, home dogs were 5-2-1.

              7) When was last time someone had a worse year than Eldrick Woods? I mean, other than people who died or had severe injuries.........Woods had to put the kibosh on Rachel Uchitel appearing in Playboy, telling her it violated the terms of her (very lucrative) confidentiality aggrement if she talked about him in a magazine. Hmmmmmm......

              6) Someone gave Penn State $88M, so they're starting up a hockey team; hell for $88M, they could own a good part of an NHL team.

              5) Jennifer Lopez is going to make $12M as a judge on American Idol this year; funny thing is, apparently she wanted a lot more. Wow.

              4) Wasn't going to comment on Derek Jeter hoodwinking umpires other night, but now I will, since NYC media nitwits say "gamesmanship" was part of the whole thing.

It just goes to show how the Bronx Bombers gets calls in key situations, witness the Jeter/Jeremy Giambi play in '01, or Reggie Jackson when he got hit by the throw by first base in '78. Thats why Joe Maddon got so mad-- he can probably envision getting hosed in a playoff game.

              3) I need the definition of what makes someone a celebrity; I read where Khloe Kardashian is a celebrity. Why? How? What the hell has she done to be a celebrity, other than have a sister who made a sex tape? Oh yeah, she hoodwinked Odom into marrying her too. Great move by him.

              2) As the World Turns went off the air Friday after 54 years on TV; it was a staple in my house growing up. My mother watched all the soaps, from that to Days of Our Lives, Edge of Night and Guiding Light. Truly the end of an era in television.

              1) Time-Warner Cable's help desk is in the Phillipines; they did a great job helping me, but they couldn't have one in America? No wonder they can't agree with the NFL on airing NFL Network. Penny pinchers.
