Bettors’ best friend: Thursday’s wagering tips

    Lines to watch

Cleveland opened at +100 with a total of 7.5. The Indians are now pegged at -115 with the over/under at 8.

    Weather to watch

Arizona at Cincinnati – 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms.
Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland – 90 percent chance of thunderstorms with 23 mph winds blowing out to right field.
Pirates at New York Mets – 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

    Who’s hot

Cincinnati Bearcats are 6-2 ATS in their last eight Thursday night games.
Minnesota is 20-6 in its last 26 meetings with the Chicago White Sox.

    Who’s not

Arizona has two wins in its last 10.
Los Angeles Angels are 10-23 in their last 33 road games.
Pittsburgh is 7-44 in its last 51 road games.
San Diego is 8-31 in its last 39 games in St. Louis.

    Key stat

0.45 – San Francisco Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez’s ERA over his last three games. Despite allowing just one run over his last 20 innings, Sanchez added only one win to his personal record. He takes the ball against Ted Lilly and his L.A. Dodgers on Thursday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jason Bay (concussion), New York Mets. Bay admitted that it was "highly unlikely" that he would be able to return to action this season. He has been out since late-July but had been holding out hope that he would be able to get back in the lineup for the stretch run.

    Game of the day

    Cincinnati at North Carolina State

    Notable quotable

“I hate the Twins,” a partial quote from White Sox starter Mark Buehrle, jumped off the page of Tuesday’s Chicago Tribune in huge font. Buehrle’s full comment wasn’t nearly as pointed, as he continued to say that he hated the Twins because “they’re good and they win.” Buehrle heads into Thursday’s start working on a 2-1 record against the Twins this year with a 2.74 ERA.

    Tips and notes

South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders was dismissed from the team on Wednesday. The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder was under investigation for possible contact with a sports agent and is also being looked into about his living arrangements with a few other South Carolina players at the Whitney Hotel. He was on indefinite suspension before the dismissal. ESPN’s Mel Kiper had him listed as the No. 2 tight end for next year’s NFL draft.

It looks as though the San Diego Padres may have solved their problem at the leadoff spot of their batting order. Aaron Cunningham had three hits and two runs scored in his first game at the top of the order for the Padres Tuesday night. San Diego has the worst leadoff hitter batting average in the bigs at .222 this season. Cunningham, went 0-for-3 at that spot on Wednesday, but was hitting .327 with 13 extra-base hits in 101 at bats heading into that game, so he’s likely to see some more action at the top of the order.

Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders underwent surgery on his torn right bicep on Wednesday, putting him out indefinitely. The Colts plan to keep him on the roster, hoping he’ll be able to come back late in the regular season. Indy squares off against the New York Giants in Week 2’s Sunday Nighter and is listed as a 5.5-point favorite.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Tim Stauffer (4-3, 1.54 ERA), San Diego Padres

Stauffer made the most of his opportunity filling in for Mat Latos last week. He fired four innings of one-run ball on Monday and then followed that up six scoreless innings, giving up three hits against the Giants on Saturday. Get used to Stauffer in the rotation. Word is the Padres are going to keep him there for a while.

Jonathan Sanchez (10-8, 3.29 ERA), San Francisco Giants

Sanchez has pitched San Francisco to team wins in four of his last five starts and hasn’t given up a run over his last two innings, spanning 12 innings. He allowed only one hit in his last outing, blanking the Padres over five innings in a 1-0 loss. The lefty did have problems with his control in that one, walking seven while striking out four.

      Slumping

Rodrigo Lopez (5-14, 5.13 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

Lopez hasn’t won a game since July 8, going 0-6 through those 11 starts, though he has been better lately. He allowed just two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings in a 2-1 loss at Colorado the last time he took the hill and only allowed three runs over six innings in a 3-2 loss against Houston before that.

Minnesota at Chicago White Sox (-105, 8.5)

The rivalry between the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox is nothing new, but sometimes it can be blown way out of proportion. On Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune featured a huge headline to accompany a Mark Buehrle photo saying “I hate the Twins,” which was accurate. However, Buehrle continued to say he hated Minnesota because “they’re good and they win.”

Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire didn’t appear overly offended.

"I enjoy the heck out of it, even 'I hate the Twins' on a headline. That's great stuff,” Gardenhire told reporters “I mean, Chicago stuff, that's great. You open the paper up and, 'Hey, honey you want a cup of coffee?' 'Yeah — I hate the Twins?' It doesn't get any better than that. It's a great article, and it doesn't get any better than that."

The Twins had won 20 of its last 26 games against the White Sox heading into Wednesday’s matchup.

      Pick: Twins

      Arizona at Cincinnati (-180, 9)

The Cincinnati Reds could be getting a big veteran presence back on the field for the stretch run. Jim Edmonds, who has been out since the end of August with an oblique injury, has responded to treatment well after many thought his season, or even his career might be over.

Reports out of Cincinnati say that he looks good in the batting cage and may return over the next few days. Edmonds is batting .272 with nine homers and 21 RBIs in 82 games this season.

Cincinnati had lost two of three heading into Wednesday’s game and was limited to just a single run in both of those losses.

      Pick: Over

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 16 in Baseball History...

1905 - The New York Highlanders find themselves a little short on infielders, so right fielder Willie Keeler, who is left-handed, plays second base in both halves of a twin bill.

1914 - Roger Peckinpaugh, at twenty-three, was hired to finish the season as manager of the New York Yankees.

1919 - Dutch Ruether beats the Giants 4-3 to clinch Cincinnati's first pennant since American Association days.

1924 - Jim Bottomley went six-for-six and batted in a record twelve runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 17-3. His hits included two home runs.

1940 - Rookie Johnny Lucadello of the St. Louis Browns hits home runs from each side of the plate against the New York Yankees in a 16-4 Browns win. Only Wally Schang, in 1916, had accomplished the same feat in the American League. Mickey Mantle in 1955 will be the next American League player to do it. These are the only home runs Lucadello hits all year.

1957 - The Los Angeles City Council approves a 300-acre site in Chavez Ravine for a Dodger stadium if the club will finance a public recreation area.

1960 - Warren Spahn, thirty-nine, pitched a no-hitter and set an all-time Braves record with fifteen strikeouts. Milwaukee beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0.

1965 - Dave Morehead of the Boston Red Sox pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park.

1968 - American League President Joe Cronin fires umpires Al Salerno, an eight-year veteran, and Bill Valentine, with seven years. They say they have been fired for activities related to starting an umpires union.

1975 - The Pittsburgh Pirates routed the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field 22-0. It was the most one-sided shutout since 1900. Rennie Stennett had seven hits, including two two-hit innings.

1979 - Willie Wilson hits his fifth inside-the-park homer of the season in a 6-3 loss to Seattle at Kansas City. It is the most inside-the-park-homers in a season since Kiki Cuyler hit eight for the Pirates in 1925.

1987 - Joe Carter of the Cleveland Indians became the ninth Major Leaguer to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season when he stole his career-high 30th base in the fourth inning of a 5-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

1988 - Cincinnati's Tom Browning pitched a perfect game as the Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0. Browning struck out eight and allowed only eight balls to be hit out of the infield.

1993 - Dave Winfield of the Minnesota Twins became the 19th player in Major League history to get 3,000 hits with a single off Oakland's Dennis Eckersley.

1995 - Greg Maddux of the Braves sets a Major League record with his 17th consecutive road victory in a 6-1 triumph over the Reds.

1996 - Paul Molitor got his 3,000th career hit, becoming the 21st Major Leaguer to reach the mark and the first to do it with a triple.

1997 - Philadelphia's Curt Schilling struck out nine in the Phillies win over the New York Mets to become the 13th pitcher since 1900 with 300 strikeouts in a season.

            Daily Sports Roundup: September 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Cincinnati meets N.C. State on the gridiron, while the White Sox play host to the Twins, and the WNBA Finals continue down in Atlanta.

            Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football game on the schedule for Thursday night, with Cincinnati at North Carolina State. The Bearcats (1-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) broke into the win column last weekend with a 40-7 victory over cupcake Indiana State. The Wolfpack (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) managed to beat Central Florida last time out, winning by a final score of 28-21 on the road. North Carolina State has been listed as the 2-point favorite for Thursday night.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Baseball has just six games on tap for Thursday, with Arizona at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at the Mets, San Diego at St. Louis, the Dodgers at San Francisco, the Angels at Cleveland, and Minnesota at the White Sox. Carl Pavano (16-11, 3.47 ERA) is slated to take on Mark Buehrle (12-10, 3.99 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Pavano was the hard-luck loser in his most recent trip to the mound, allowing just two runs on six hits over eight innings of work against the Indians. Lefthander Buehrle was stuck with his third straight no-decision last time out, giving up three runs on eight hits over seven innings of work against the Royals. Chicago, though, went 3-0 in those Buehrle outings.

            Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the Seattle Storm will be looking to wrap up the WNBA Finals on Thursday night when they play Game 3 on the road in Atlanta against the Dream. The Storm took a commanding 2-0 series lead with an 87-84 home win in Game 2 on Tuesday night. Lauren Jackson led the way with 26 points for Seattle in that contest, while Swin Cash was good for 19 points. Angel McCoughtry picked up 21 points in the defeat for Atlanta.

              Thursday's six-pack

Some NFL trends for Week 2 coming up......

-- Falcons covered 12 of their last 17 home games.

-- Raiders are 0-10 vs spread in last 10 tries as a home favorite.

-- Steelers covered their last five games as a road underdog.

-- Eagles are 11-3 as a favorite in non-divisional games.

-- Bears are 0-8 vs spread in last eight tries as a road underdog.

-- Jaguars are 2-11 vs spread in game after their last 13 wins.

              *************************************************

Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff as the week winds down.....

              13) Alabama visits Duke this week, which seems weird, until you realize that Duke plays its home games in Wallace Wade Stadium. Coach Wade led Duke to a 110-36-7 record, couple Rose Bowls in late 30’s/early 40’s, but before coming to Durham, he led the Crimson Tide to three national titles in the ‘20’s.

              12) Seattle Mariners fired their pro scouting director this week, after it came out that one of the guys they got in the Cliff Lee trade has a felony charge pending against him, and Fusco never told any of his bosses about it before the trade was made.

              11) With Andres Torres (appendix- out indefinitely), Giants need Aaron Roward to step up, but he’s just 6 for his last 51 at the plate.

              10) Minnesota Timberwolves ran a full-page ad in local newspaper this week, telling fans they’re probably not going to contend for the NBA title this year; that’s almost as depressing as fact that Ricky Rubio, who won’t cross the pond to play for Minnesota, shot 28% from the floor at the Worlds in Turkey, which has to decrease his potential trade value.

              9) A Memphis-area writer asked (seriously) that if Bruce Pearl got suspended/fired, shouldn’t legendary women’s coach Pat Summitt be the person to replace him? First off, Vols would be stupid to fire Pearl, and second, Summitt would make a mistake jumping into the vastly deeper pond of men’s basketball.

              8) Prince Fielder had major leagues’ longest consecutive games played streak (327) until he sat out a game this week with the flu. Dodgers’ Matt Kemp now has the longest current Ironman streak.

              7) It’s pretty much assumed that Francisco Rodriguez won’t be a Met next year, but now new Mets’ closer Takahashi could be gone too; he signed an odd contract that allowed him to become a free agent after one year in Queens, and he’s done well enough that he’ll be in demand this winter.

              6) “Actions speak louder than words.” That’s part of whats great about sports. At some point, the lights go on, the teams play and the game speaks for itself.

              5) Ravens won 70% (21 of 30) of their 3rd down plays Monday night, one of the biggest reasons they escaped the Swamp with a 10-9 win. 70%, combining both offense/defense 3rd down plays, is a very high percentage in the NFL.

              4) Manny Ramirez had zero RBI in his first 37 AB's for the White Sox. Not exactly the best salary drive.

              3) There have been only two big league games this season where the winning team had one hit, and San Francisco lost both games, with Sanchez/Zito tough-luck losers.

              2) 4,400 empty seats at the Jet game Monday, 5,200 at the Giants game Sunday; there will be blackouts in NY-NJ area if either team falls out of contention, and maybe even if they don’t.

              1) Four NBA referees have retired, but not 71-year old Dick Bavetta, who enters his 36th season as an NBA referee. “Dick the Knick” lives an hour north of me, in Lake Luzerne.

The Dodgers have split the 16 games they've played against the Giants this season. GIANTS: (-105, O/U 6.5) San Francisco is in a heated battle for the National League West division lead. The Giants are trying to keep pace with San Diego, as well as trying to hold off Colorado. San Francisco has won 7 of their past 10 games, and stand 81-64 SU on the year. The Giants have struggled offensively of late, scoring 1 run or less in 4 of their past 6 games. To win the NL West, San Francisco must kick their offense into gear. The Giants are +10.55 and -6.55 units both SU and on the RL this season. Lefty Jonathan Sanchez has been nearly unhittable of late, and will look to keep that up against their rival today. Sanchez is 10-8 SU with an ERA of 3.29 and a WHIP of 1.26 this year. The Giants are 6-2 in their last 8 Thursday games overall. San Francisco is 7-3 in their last 10 games against the National League West. The Giants are 37-16 in their last 53 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
