College football opening line report: Week 3

Anyone who has watched -- and wagered on -- Southern Cal so far this season, has probably seen enough of the Trojans to last them a year.

It’s early, certainly, and they are indeed 2-0, make no mistake. But Lane Kiffin, in Year 1 of his head-coaching tenure at USC, has underwhelmed to say the least. Two games against two rebuilding programs — Hawaii and Virginia — and not a cover to be had anywhere.

“Trust me,” said Tony Sinisi, of Las Vegas Sports Consultants, “USC has been a huge, huge disappointment.”

But as bad as they’ve been — as lethargic, as boring, as un-Trojanlike as they’ve looked — one thing is for sure: They have not been Minnesota.

“The depth of my disappointment, right now, you can’t measure it.”

Those were the words on one Tim Brewster, coach of the embattled Golden Gophers. You know, the team that just lost at home, 41-38, to South Dakota of the FCS. The state of Minnesota, after that disgrace, is now abuzz with a Brewster Watch — it’s just a matter of when, not if, he gets fired — and all the while, there are still 10 games left in the season.

“We can't let this game,” Brewster said, “define us, define our season."

OK, well, if that loss doesn’t define the Gophers’ year, then perhaps this next one may. That’s because USC — despite its slow start, despite its share of problems, despite its youth — is coming to town Saturday with plenty of talent, and plenty of time to put it all together.

“What’s going on at Minnesota might just be horrific,” Sinisi said. “The statistics vs. South Dakota were uglier than the actual score. I believe the wheels are coming off and the coach seems well on his way out. Even with what’s going on at USC, we’re going to make Southern Cal 21-point favorites here.”

And with that, let’s take a look at some other marquee games this weekend, and some of the opening opinions coming from Las Vegas:

    Cincinnati (+3) at N.C. State

“The jury is out on both teams,” Sinisi said. “It’s early, and there’s plenty of time for them to develop an identity. We’ll go on the home team with a field goal.”

    Kansas (+4) at Southern Miss

“This Kansas situation just illustrates that in today’s college football, if you’re not ready, you’re going to get beat,” Sinisi said. “Kansas laid an egg in Week 1, and then came out was ready to play in Week 2. Georgia Tech wasn’t, so Kansas got them. But Southern Miss is quality, and they’re at home, and you don’t know what Kansas may have from one week to the next. Tough game.”

    Cal (-3) at Nevada

“Nevada is a quality opponent, and will be a real test for this Cal team,” Sinisi said. “Cal has been a tease in recent years. They look good, they have good early wins, but then, they can never get over the hump. This will be one of those hump games.”

    Maryland (+14) at West Virginia

“Maryland is 2-0, but Navy, in Week 1, really moved the ball well against them,” Sinisi said. “That bodes well for West Virginia.”

Georgia Tech (Off) at North Carolina

“We’re going to hold off,” Sinisi said. “We have to be certain who is, and who isn’t going to play for North Carolina. There’s probably a six-point swing on this game, depending on who plays, and who doesn’t.”

    Arkansas (Pick) at Georgia

“I still think Georgia is a quality team. They certainly didn’t disgrace themselves at South Carolina,” Sinisi said. “But Arkansas, I believe, is loaded more than any other year. They could be the real deal.”

    BYU (+8) at Florida State

“This is going to be a tough game because a lot of people really thought Florida State was going to be great this year,” said John Avello, of the Wynn Hotel Sportsbook. “The public liked Florida State at Oklahoma, and got burned. But still, for this one, they’re at home, and BYU hasn’t shown much.”

    Air Force (+17) at Oklahoma

“Air Force looked good vs. BYU, but this is a different deal, because they’re on the road,” Sinisi said. “It’s not who you play, it’s when you play, in college football. More than anything, this is not a game where the talent is close, it’s just who has the better attitude.”

    Nebraska (-6) at Washington

“This is tough, because Nebraska has had two soft games. They haven’t been tested,” Avello said. “And Washington is a decent team. They finally put it together against Syracuse, and they have talent. But Nebraska — because of who they are, and what’s expected of them — is the favorite.”

    Arizona State (+15) at Wisconsin

“I’ve got a real feel for Wisconsin, they are top echelon Big Ten, and are showing it,” Sinisi said. “And Arizona State is a real question mark. They are going into one of the tougher places to play. And traveling from the west to the east is a tough deal for a young team.”

    Florida (-14) at Tennessee

“Florida has issues this year,” Sinisi said. “They are not the same, and that’s understandable. Tennessee, though, is a team you can get healthy with ... quick. We’re going with 14, and might even go higher.”

    Clemson (+6) at Auburn

“This shapes up to be a good one,” Avello said. “The school locations are pretty close, and there’s some history. Auburn, though, with the home field, is going to get the nod.”

Notre Dame (+3) at Michigan State

“Notre Dame fought back vs. Michigan, and I think they’re on the right track,” Avello said. “But Michigan State plays well against Notre Dame historically. At home, they have to be laying points here. But it’ll probably be a close one … right down to the wire, like the Notre Dame-Michigan game.”

    Texas (-7.5) at Texas Tech

“Texas Tech is a little bit of a mystery, with no Mike Leach,” Sinisi said. “Texas hasn’t reloaded in devastating fashion, resultwise, so far. They are not murdering teams, let’s put it that way. But on reputation here, they’re going to lay more than a touchdown.”

    Iowa (-2) at Arizona

“Arizona is still a question mark overall,” Sinisi said. “Iowa is a real quality Big Ten program, and with the travel considered, they’ll be the small favorites here.”

What bettors need to know: Cincinnati at North Carolina State
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Thursday, September 16

Cincinnati Bearcats at North Carolina State Wolfpack (-1.5, 55)

Thursday night’s Cincinnati at North Carolina State game is a handicapping head-scratcher.

The Bearcats (1-1) have looked bad. They surrendered eight sacks in an opening loss at Fresno State and got off to a sluggish start before pulling away against Indiana State, a second-tier FCS school.

Yet, Cincinnati arrives in Raleigh, N.C. as a very small underdog to face the undefeated Wolfpack.

North Carolina State hasn’t done much more than Cincinnati. The ‘Pack (2-0) crushed Western Carolina, another weak FCS team, in its opener and pulled out a semi-impressive road win at Central Florida.

North Carolina State didn’t return home from Saturday’s 28-21 win over UCF until 3:30 a.m. ET. The late arrival combined with Thursday’s game against Cincinnati had Wolfpack coach Tom O’Brien lamenting his team’s quick turnaround and telling the media that early-week practices were “sluggish.”

The Bearcats were at home last week. First-year coach Butch Jones doesn’t think the limited preparation time is that big of an advantage for either team.

To say the least, neither team is a proven commodity, which makes this game all the more tricky to handicap.

              The odds

The Las Vegas Sports Consultants sent out North Carolina State -2.5. It was down to -1.5 at most online and Vegas books as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Bearcats on a 6-2-1 ATS run as road underdogs. The Wolfpack is 5-17 ATS as a home favorite since 2003 and 2-4 in that situation under coach O’Brien.

              The total opened at 55.

North Carolina State beat Pittsburgh of the Big East 38-31 last season and averaged 38 points in its two games this year.

Cincinnati was held to 14 points at Fresno State, but got its ground game going in a 40-7 rout of Indiana State.

Wolfpack senior kicker Josh Czajkowski is 12-for-14 on field goals for his career, 2-of-2 this year, and has not missed an extra point in 52 attempts.

Bearcat senior kicker Jake Rogers is 14-for-20 on field goals for his career, 1-of-2 this season, and 70-for-72 on extra points.

Weather is not expected to have an impact.

Eleven of the last 13 Wolfpack games have eclipsed the total.

              Battle in the trenches

The Bearcats’ pass protection has been horrific. They’ve allowed 10 sacks in two games, eight coming in the opener against Fresno State. Only one team (Idaho) has allowed more.

That’s not a good matchup against a Wolfpack defense that’s done a good job of getting pressure on the quarterback. North Carolina State ranks among the Top 20 in the nation with six sacks in two games.

Three sophomores start on North Carolina State’s inexperienced offensive line that averages 307 pounds and has allowed six sacks in two games. The Bearcats have four sacks this season.

              Quarterback matchup

Russell Wilson, the 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year, hasn’t progressed like O’Brien would have hoped. He completed just 10-of-30 passes in last week’s 28-21 win over Central Florida and managed a pedestrian 35 yards on a 13 carries. While his numbers won’t wow you, Wilson has done a good job of taking care of the football and has yet to throw an interception this season.

Cincinnati’s Zach Collaros, when upright, has been solid, but not spectacular. The junior is completing just over 60 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Like Wilson, he’s a dual-threat quarterback, capable of big plays in the running game.

              Injuries

Cincinnati starting running back Isaiah Pead is a game-time decision with knee issues. The junior is the Bearcats’ leading returning rusher. He sat out last week in an effort to be available against North Carolina State, but, judging from the coach’s comments at Wednesday’s news conference, Pead seems iffy at best.

If he can’t go, Darrin Williams, who rushed for 117 yards against Indiana State in his first career start, will be the go-to guy.

The Bearcats lost one of their top receivers, senior Vidal Hazleton to a leg injury in Week 1. He’s out for the year.

North Carolina State has some reserves nicked up, but no significant injuries to starters were reported as of Wednesday afternoon.

Cincinnati Bearcats at North Carolina St. Wolfpack [7:45 PM ET]

BEARCATS: This is a make or break game for Cincinnati, as they can ill afford to start their season 1-2 SU. After the past work from former coach Brian Kelly, Bearcats faithful have come to expect excellence. There are already grumblings that new coach Butch Jones isn't the answer for Cincinnati. Offensively, the Bearcats have the 95th ranked total offense in the nation. Even worse, the once vaunted passing offense of the Bearcats is off to a slow start, ranking only 92nd in the country. Cincinnati is 0-2 ATS to start this year, and have actually lost their past 7 games ATS dating back to last season. QB Zach Collaros has yet to get on track this season, as he's yet to throw for more than 220 YDS in a game. Making matters worse is the fact that the duel threat QB has yet to use his legs in any game this year. The Bearcats have a huge game next weekend at home against Oklahoma, so it's absolutely crucial for this program that they win tonight. Cincinnati is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Thursday games.

Bearcats are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
Under is 8-1 in Bearcats last 9 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - RB Isaiah Pead (knee) is questionable.

                Projected Score: 23

WOLFPACK: (-1.5, O/U 55) North Carolina St. is off to a nice 2-0 start to the year, both SU and ATS. In a very weak ACC, perhaps the Wolfpack should be a team more people need to pay attention to. This home game against Cincinnati is vital, as the Wolfpack face Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Boston College in their following 3 games. North Carolina St. earned a gritty 28-21 win on the road at UCF last week as the listed underdog. QB Russell Wilson is directing the 26th best scoring offense in FBS this year, averaging 38 PPG. Wilson has 5 TD's to his credit this season, with no turnovers. The maturation process of the talented Wilson is a huge key to the success of this Wolfpack team. Defensively, North Carolina St. also has the 26th best scoring defense, allowing 14 PPG. North Carolina St. is likely to have a scheduling advantage, as they are the home team playing on a short week.

Wolfpack is 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September.
Under is 13-3 in Wolfpack last 16 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - WR Quintin Payton (finger) is questionable.

Projected Score: 27 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

                    Thursday's game
NC State has an excellent junior QB (25 starts), is rotating two freshman RBs; they're 12-6 vs spread in last 18 games, as underdog, 6-2 in their last eight games as home dog. Wolfpack had five takeaways (+5) in upset win at UCF last week. Cincinnati was held to 22 rushing yards in 28-14 loss at Fresno (led 14-0); Bearcats are 6-2-1 as road dog since '06. ACC underdogs are 4-3 vs spread in non-league games this season. Big East teams are off to slow 1-7-1 start vs spread in non-conference games.

                    Friday's games
How does Kansas lose to North Dakota State, then upset Georgia Tech last week? Jayhawks are 5-9 vs spread in last 14 games as dog, 12-16 as road dog since '02- they (-13) beat Southern Miss 35-28 LY, outgaining Eagles 433-395; USM is 6-4 as home favorite under Fedora; they gave up 224 rushing yards in opening 41-13 loss at South Carolina. C-USA home favorites are 0-3 vs spread in non-league games. Big 12 road dogs are 0-2 in non-conference games.

Cal Bears are just 3-9 vs spread in last dozen games as road fave; their Pac-10 opener is next week at Arizona, but ESPN date probably means they won't overlook Nevada squad that ran ball for 376 yards in 51-6 pasting of Colorado State last week. Wolf Pack is just 2-6 vs spread as an underdog since '06. Both teams have experienced QBs. Cal crushed Colorado 52-7 last week (was 31-0 at half). Pac-10 favorites are 5-2 vs spread in non-league games. WAC underdogs are 5-3 against the spread.

Kansas Jayhawks at S. Mississippi Golden Eagles [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

JAYHAWKS: Kansas has only played 2 games so far this season, but the contrast in each game can only leave you scratching your head. After losing 3-6 to North Dakota St as 27.5 favorites, the Jayhawks responded with a 28-25 win over 14th ranked Georgia Tech as +13.5 underdogs. 1st year Coach Turner Gill can only hope for a less chaotic season moving forward. Kansas was projected to finish 2nd in the Big 12 North division coming into the season. To reach those lofty goals, Kansas will have to keep improving on offense. Currently, the Jayhawks only have the 108th scoring offense in the country at 15.5 PPG. QB Jordan Webb will look to continue his maturation process, and he had a 3TD day with no turnovers against Georgia Tech. Defensively, Kansas has been far more consistent than their offense. The Jayhawks are allowing only 15.5 PPG, the 33rd best scoring defense in FBS. Tonight represents a big test for not only the young roster, but also the new coaching staff. It's important for the state of this program to back up their win over a ranked foe, as well as win their first true road game of the season.

Jayhawks are 6-1 ATS last 7 non-conference games.
Over is 7-0 last 7 games following a ATS win.

Key Injuries - RB DeShaun Sands (leg) is questionable.

                      Projected Score: 20

GOLDEN EAGLES: (-5.5, O/U 51.5) Southern Mississippi is very excited to be hosting a team from one of the bigger conferences. Only 6 time before has a Big Six Conference came into Southern Mississippi to play, with the Golden Eagles going 4-2 SU. Southern Miss is 1-1 SU and 0-2 ATS so far this season. The Golden Eagles lost 13-41 to South Carolina, despite only being outgained by 45 total yards. While this team is projected to finish 2nd in C-USA East, there is still plenty of question marks surrounding this team. Coach Fedora has stated publicly how improving on defense is the key to the Golden Eagles season. Thus far, Southern Miss is ranked 69th in scoring defense at 24 PPG. Tonight's contest represents a revenge game for the Golden Eagles. Last year, Southern Miss lost 28-35 to Kansas as an 11.5 underdog. QB Austin Davis will need to have a great game tonight for the Golden Eagles to prevail. Through 2 games, Southern Mississippi has the 28th ranked passing offense at 274 YPG.

Golden Eagles are 3-7 ATS last 10 games following a SU win of more than 20 points.
                      Over is 5-1 last 6 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - RB Tracey Lampley (knee) is probable.

Projected Score: 31 (SIDE of the Day)

California Golden Bears at Nevada Wolfpack [ESPN 2 | 10:00 PM ET]

GOLDEN BEARS: (-3, O/U 66) It seems like each year Coach Tedford gets off to a fast start. Proving this point is the fact California is 6-1 ATS in their past 7 September games. This will be the 25th time Cal has faced Nevada, but the very first time that they will meet in Nevada. Cal has 2 wide margin wins, for a combined score of 104-10. Quite the disparity, but especially so when considering one of those opponents was Colorado. The Golden Bears come into tonight with the 5th ranked scoring offense, as well as the 4th ranked scoring defense. Senior QB Kevin Riley has thrown for 7 TD's this year, without an INT. Star RB Shane Vareen has modest numbers to start the year with only 63 yards rushing. However, Vareen has found the end zone 5 times thus far in limited playing time due to their blowout victories. California will be tested defensively tonight, as this is their first road game of the year. This contest with Nevada will be the last non-conference game of the season for California.

Golden Bears are 12-3 ATS last 15 games following a SU win of more than 20 points.
                      Over is 12-3-1 last 16 non-conference games.

                      Key Injuries - None Reported.

Projected Score: 38 (OVER-Total of the Day)

WOLFPACK: Nevada is off to a fast 2-0 SU start, scoring a combined 100 PTS thus far. The Wolfpack have scored 51 and 49 PTS, against Colorado St. and Eastern Washington respectively. As a result of these blowout victories, Nevada has a top 20 offense in nearly every offensive category imaginable. The Wolfpack are 18th in passing, 6th in rushing, and 7th in PPG. Those are some incredibly balanced numbers that signify just how productive the pistol offense can be. QB Colin Kaepernick has been outstanding this season, rushing and passing for 2 TD's in each game this year. Nevada is looking to make some noise in the WAC conference, where they feel they can challenge Boise St. for league supremacy. For the Wolfpack to be truly great, their defense is going to have to lead them to the promise land. While solid against Colorado St, the Wolfpack did allow Eastern Washington to score 24 PTS. As great as the Wolpack offense is, the Golden Bears offense will provide a stern test. Nevada is hoping to have a huge crowd in their favor, as most smaller conferences receive when playing a BCS school during the week.

Wolfpack are 8-3 ATS last 11 home games against a team with a winning road record.
Over is 5-1 last 6 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game.

Key Injuries - WR L.J. Washington (knee) is questionable.

                      Projected Score: 34

                        What bettors need to know
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas at Southern Mississippi (-5.5 49.5)

                        WHY KANSAS WILL COVER

The Jayhawks’ season was written off by most after they lost 6-3 to North Dakota State in their season opener. But in Week 2, head coach Turner Gill made some adjustments and engineered a 28-25 upset over a ranked Georgia Tech team.

Gill made two key changes in that game: he gave the starting quarterback job to red shirt freshman Jordan Webb and the feature running back spot to James Sims, a true freshman.

Kansas carries the momentum into Friday and aims to establish an attack similar to what South Carolina employed against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles struggled against the run in that game giving up 224 yards on 35 carries in a 41-13 loss.

The Jayhawks were not the same team that lost to North Dakota State and Southern Miss is a bit of a talent downgrade compared to Georgia Tech. And don’t forget the Jayhawks’ offensive coordinator, Darrell Wyatt, held the same position previously at Southern Miss.

                        WHY SOUTHERN MISS WILL COVER

Last year as +11.5 point underdogs in Lawrence, the Golden Eagles came back from a 21-7 deficit and nearly upset Kansas. The revenge factor gets a boost this year with ESPN cameras and home field advantage.

QB Austin Davis threw for 331 yards and 3 TDs in last year’s tilt and he leads a fast-paced offense that looks to exploit Kansas’s defensive depth problems. Against Georgia Tech, the Jayhawks D focused mainly on containing the option and they still gave up 407 yards of total offense.

                        NOTES AND TRENDS

People don’t seem to be sold on Kansas with the line opening up at -4 in favor of Southern Miss, which has now seen movement up to -5.5. The Jayhawks are decent against the spread (ATS) in non-conference games covering the spread six times in their last seven. Southern Miss is 0-2 ATS so far this year and both of their games have gone over the total.

A low of 69 degrees is expected by kickoff with a 10 percent chance of precipitation.

                        California at Nevada (+2.5, 65.5)

                        WHY CAL WILL COVER

The Golden Bears have the historical edge in this series going 22-1-1 against the Wolf Pack and they’ve also completely dominated their opponents in 2010, outscoring Colorado and UC Davis 104-10. QB Kevin Riley is a huge part of that offensive explosion and he already has seven TD passes this season.

Nevada runs a high-powered offense and has scored 100 points in two games. Their pistol attack leads the nation in total yards at 592 per game.

The Cal’s stopper unit should have the personnel to handle their attack. The Golden Bears produced five turnovers and six sacks in their last game against Colorado and they have been particularly good against the run allowing only 44.5 yards per game.

                        WHY NEVADA WILL COVER

This is the last chance for the Nevada seniors to prove that Boise isn’t the only the quality team in the WAC. Other than their November encounter with the Broncos, the Cal game is the most important one on the schedule. The group has gradually improved over the last three years.

Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick has been under the radar despite all his talents. The senior is one of the most exciting offensive players in the NCAA as he demonstrated against Colorado State (241 passing yards, 161 rushing yards, four combined TDs). A big performance on national TV against a BCS team would increase his profile.

                        NOTES AND TRENDS

The line sits at -3 in favor of the visiting Cal Bears and can be found for -2.5 at some books. The Wolf Pack have only covered once in the last four games when listed as underdogs in non-conference games. Nevada is also just 2-18 straight up against BCS schools since 2004.

The total opened at 62 and has moved all the way up to 66 with most expecting an offensive shootout.

The low temperature is expected to touch 52 degrees by kickoff. Expect a decent sized Golden Bear contingent in the stands because of Reno’s close proximity to Northern California.

What bettors need to know: Texas at Texas Tech
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Longhorns at Texas Tech Red Raiders (+3, 50.5)

A Big 12 South Division battle kicks off in Lubbock where Texas Tech hosts Texas at Jones AT&T Stadium. Let’s take a look at how these two teams match up.

                          Bevo beat

When Garrett Gilbert was named the starting quarterback as the successor to Colt McCoy for the Longhorns, coach Mack Brown immediately decided to add new running schemes to the offense.

According to Brown, the move was primarily made to help balance the offense. It was also done in an effort to take the pressure off Gilbert, who was thrown into battle as a true freshman in the BCS Championship game when McCoy went down with an injury in the first quarter last year.

The offense has been slow to start the 2010 campaign, failing to gain 400 yards in either of their first two contests against Rice and Wyoming.

To make matters worse, Longhorns running back Vondrell McGee's appeal to the NCAA over his unspecified "unresolved academic eligibility issues" has been denied, ending his college football career.

McGee played in 35 career games at Texas, starting seven. He rushed for 973 total yards on 219 carries, including 14 touchdowns.

"He's disappointed that he's not getting to play, (but) he'll make it work for him," Brown said. "Vondrell's a tough young man. He was embarrassed by his slip-up in the spring. He's been a great young man for us.”

With McGee gone, Texas' three primary tailbacks remain Fozzy Whittaker, Cody Johnson and Tré Newton.

                          New look Raiders

When Tommy Tuberville took over for pass-happy predecessor Mike Leach he brought a new playbook with pronounced changes from the old one.

Like Brown and the Longhorns, he too is attempting to balance the offense.

Defensively he noticed a unit that "didn't have a lot of confidence" and immediately took steps to remedy the situation.

Two games into the season, the Red Raiders are thriving in their new, 3-4 scheme under the direction of new defensive coordinator James Willis, who spent last season as the linebackers coach at Alabama.

Texas coach Brown said videotape reviews of the 2010 Tech defense show a pressure-based unit that "mirrors a lot of the things that they're doing at Alabama."

Considering that the top-ranked Crimson Tide defeated Texas 37-21 in last year's BCS National Championship Game, that's a good group to imitate.

Brown also noted a strong similarity between the Texas Tech defense and the Longhorns’ unit directed by Will Muschamp, a former assistant with Willis on Tuberville's staff at Auburn (2006-07).

The Red Raiders have forced seven turnovers in two games, tied for seventh nationally in turnovers gained. Texas is tied for 85th, with two turnovers - none in last week's 34-7 victory over Wyoming. Texas Tech ranks fourth nationally in interceptions (five). Texas is tied for 64th with one.

Granted, the Longhorns are allowing fewer yards and fewer points. But TTU is making more big plays, which usually decides head-to-head matchups. Although the Longhorns have six sacks, a solid number through two games, Texas Tech has nine.

Red Raiders cornerback Will Ford said the Raiders' game plan against Texas is simple.

"Try to bring pressure on the quarterback," Ford told reporters. "Get the defense off the field and our offense on the field to score points."

Defensive tackle Colby Whitlock said players have fully embraced Willis' pressure-based scheme after taking on more of a bend-but-don't-break approach under Leach.

"I've liked everything he's brought to the table so far," Whitlock said of Willis' defensive tweaks. "I think this scheme is going to be more effective than the defense we had last year, and I think it's a great scheme to run."

Don’t be surprised if Saturday night’s battle comes down to turnover margin. If Texas Tech continues to shine in that area, another upset is possible in Lubbock.

                          Commonalities

Like last season, the two schools open Big 12 Conference play against each other and a single loss could potentially cost either team a shot at the Big 12 South Division title and perhaps, the Big 12 Championship.

The Longhorns avenged a costly loss on this field in 2008 with a 34-24 win in Austin last season.

“I am excited about it,” Tuberville said during the media conference. “Fortunately for us, we get to play it at home. I had the chance to watch this game a couple of years ago, on TV, when Tech won this game. It was probably the game of the decade, to me, in college football. It was an outstanding game played on both sides. It was very thrilling, a lot of excitement; hopefully we will have a lot of the same things in this game coming up.”

The Horns are 44-15 all-time against TTU. Mack Brown is 9-3 against Texas Tech, with all three losses in Lubbock ('98, '02 and the classic showdown featuring the Michael Crabtree game-winning catch in ‘08).

                          Coaches stats to ponder

                          • Texas coach Brown is 8-6 SU and 3-10-1 ATS as a conference road favorite of six or less points, including 1-6-1 ATS with the Longhorns.

                          • Brown is 13-8 SU and 4-17 ATS as a favorite versus undefeated opponents.

                          • Texas Tech coach Tuberville is 14-9 SU and 16-7 ATS in games against undefeated conference opposition.

                          • Tuberville is 18-36 ATS versus an opponent off an ATS loss, including 8-25 ATS at home.

                            Write-Up

                            Saturday's games

                            Highlighted games

LY, Georgia (+2) won 52-41 at Arkansas, as suspect QB Cox averaged over 20 yards a completion; Murray is upgrade at QB for Dawgs in '10, but star WR Green is still suspended. Georgia is 12-20-1 as home fave since '04; they were outgained by 101 yards last week in Columbia, with Dawgs getting outrushed 189-61. Arkansas has Alabama coming to town next week; they're 4-4 as road dog under Petrino, 1-8 SU on foreign soil.

Temple was booted out of Big East to make room for UConn; Owls lost in OT in last series meeting (12-9, +6 in '08). UConn is 9-3 as road fave since '02, 17-10 vs spread in non-league games. Temple is 7-2-1 as home dog under Golden; they won first two games in dramatic fashion, and do not think they'll look past team that pushed them out of a BCS league. Big East teams are now 1-8-1 vs spread in non-conference games.

San Diego State is 2-0 for first time since '94; they're 9-13-1 as road dog since '06, 3-8-1 vs spread in last 12 non-league games. Mountain West underdogs are 1-4 vs spread in non-league games; Big 12 home favorites are 7-5. Missouri is just 2-6 vs spread as home favorite since '08, but is 14-7 vs spread in last 21 non-league games. Aztecs ran for 244 yards in 41-21 win last week, passed for 319 more, offsetting 106 penalty yards.

Florida State (+8) crushed BYU 54-28 LY, running ball for 313 yards in game where FSU was +5 in turnovers; Seminoles are just 7-18 as home favorite since '05, but are 12-8 vs spread in game following last 20 losses. BYU is 0-3 as road dog since '07, losing by 10-25-24 points; they lost at Air Force last week, giving up 409 rushing yards- this is third tough foe in row for Cougar squad that can't decide which quarterback to play.

Washington is 4-1 as home underdog under Sarkisian; Huskies were up only 13-10 at half vs Syracuse last week before pulling away late- they have big edge in experience at QB, as this is first road start for Martinez, a very mobile QB. Cornhuskers are 4-2 in last six games as road favorite, are 8-2 in non-league games under Pelini. Favorites are 8-3 vs spread in Pac-10's non-league games so far (Pac-10 clubs 1-3 as the dog).

Clemson coach Swinney went to Alabama, so ending Clemson's 13-game skid vs Auburn would be doubly sweet; Clemson is 7-2 as road underdog since '05, but just 4-8 vs spread in last 12 non-league games. Auburn is in SEC sandwich (South Carolina next week); they start four OL seniors, are 8-15 as home favorite since '06. Teams last met in '07, when Auburn (+2) beat Clemson 23-20 in OT in Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Average total in last five Texas-Texas Tech games is 73.4, but with both sides leaning more to run, score will be lower here, on 56th birthday for new Tech coach Tuberville. Senior QB for Tech, while soph Gilbert is making first start in hostile territory. Longhorns are 6-4 in last 10 games as road favorite, Tech is 5-1 as recent home dog. Texas starts 4 seniors on offensive line, Red Raiders start three sophomores.

LSU is 17-1 last 18 games vs Mississippi State, winning last 10 games, but Bulldogs were stopped on 1-yard line with 1:08 left in LY's 30-26 home loss to Tigers, as Mullen has MSU on right track. Bulldogs are 2-2 as road dog under Mullen (12-19-1 in last 32 games before him). LSU is 11-19-1 as home favorite under Miles; they outgained Vandy 392-135 in methodical 27-10 road win in conference opener last week.

Home side won seven of last eight Fresno-Utah State games; Bulldogs won last visit here 30-28 (-15.5- long FG on last play), won last three series games by 11-2-4 points (underdog covered last five series games). Utah State went to Norman, outgained Sooners 442-441, so they've got talent, and QB with 23 career starts. Aggies are 15-5 vs spread in last 20 games as a dog. Could Fresno be looking ahead to Ole Miss next week?

Visitor is 7-1-1 vs spread in last nine Notre Dame-Michigan State games; with average total in last five, 60.0. Three of last five series games were decided by exactly 3 points. Spartans are just 16-27-1 as home favorite since '01; they've run ball for 297-225 yards in winning first two games this year. Irish were 9-6 as road dog under Weis; Kelly's Cincinnati and Central Michigan clubs were 10-5-1 as a road underdog.

Iowa (-3) held Arizona to 8 first downs in 27-17 home win LY, but that was just before Foles became Wildcats' starting QB; Arizona is 9-1-1 as home underdog since '05, 20-10-1 vs spread in last 31 games as the dog. Iowa is 8-1 vs spread last nine road games, but hasn't won game west of Rockies since '87 (first trip west in six years). 12,000 Iowa fans going to this game. Big 11 teams are 5-3-1 as non-conference fave, 0-1-1 on road.

UCLA gave up 66 points in losing its first two games and was booed at home in last game (35-0 loss to Stanford); now Bruins are home dog to a team from Conference USA. Bruins were 0-3 as home dog LY, after 11-2 run as home dog from '02-'08. UCLA is 14-6 vs spread in last 20 games out of Pac-10. Houston is 1-8 as road favorite under Sumlin (home team is 16-2 vs spread in Cougar games since he became Houston's coach).

Stanford plays Notre Dame next week, better not look past Wake Forest squad that was down 17-3 at half LY, rallied to beat Cardinal 24-17 in game where Wake outrushed Stanford 251-115. Deacons are 2-5 as road underdog since '07, after being 17-7 in previous 24 tries. Stanford is 13-5 as home favorite since '02, 7-3 under Harbaugh- they crushed UCLA in Rose Bowl last week 35-0. If not for revenge, this would be trap game.

                            Rest of the Card
-- West Virginia is 6-13 vs spread in last 19 games as favorite, 3-8 as HF under Stewart; they won last three games vs Maryland by average score of 36-19. Maryland is 11-21 vs spread in game after its last 32 wins.
-- Underdog covered last three Iowa St-Kansas St games; Snyder is 32-18 vs spread in his last 50 Big 12 games. Cyclones are 6-1 vs spread in last seven games as a road dog. KState blocked PAT to win 24-23 LY.
