    Daily Sports Roundup: September 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees and Rays battle for the AL East, while Monday Night Football begins its campaign with games in New Jersey and Kansas City.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Monday Night Football kicks off with a doubleheader this week, with Baltimore at the Jets (7:00pm ET) and San Diego at Kansas City (10:15pm ET). Oddsmakers aren't giving the Jets much of an advantage at home in that first matchup, pegging them as just 2-point favorites with the total at 36. LB Calvin Pace (foot) will miss Monday's game for New York, as will WR Santonio Holmes (suspension). In the late game the Chargers are listed as 5-point road favorites over the Chiefs, with that total at 45. San Diego LB Shawne Merriman (achilles) has been listed as doubtful, with disgruntled WR Vincent Jackson suspended for the game. The Chargers and Chiefs were 1-3 in the preseason.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

There are just four games on the American League schedule for Monday, with Oakland at Kansas City, Toronto at Baltimore, Boston at Seattle, and the Yankees at Tampa Bay. CC Sabathia (19-6, 3.14 ERA) will go for his 20th win of the season for New York in that last contest, while David Price (17-6, 2.87 ERA) gets the ball for the Rays. Lefthander Sabathia was tagged with a rare loss last time out, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over 6 1-3 innings of work against the Orioles. Sabathia also lost to the Rays on August 1 (three runs over 6 2-3 innings). Lefthander Price beat the Red Sox in his most recent outing, surrendering two runs (one earned) over his six innings.

Meanwhile, the National League on Monday offers up Philadelphia at Florida, Pittsburgh at the Mets, Arizona at Cincinnati, Washington at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Houston, the Cubs at St. Louis, and San Diego at Colorado. Cory Luebke (1-1, 3.27 ERA) is slated to take on Jeff Francis (4-4, 4.56 ERA) in that Padres/Rockies matchup. Lefthander Luebke beat the Dodgers last time out (six shutout innings), but he fell to the Rockies in his big-league debut on September 3 (four runs over five innings). Lefthander Francis (sore shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list for Monday's contest. Francis last pitched on August 11 against the Mets, giving up two runs over six innings.

Bettors’ best friend: Monday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Baltimore Raves at New York Jets – total is at 35.5 from its opening of 38.5.
San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs – Chiefs opened as 5.5-point favorites but are now listed at -4.5.

      Weather to watch

Arizona at Cincinnati – high winds blowing WSW at 21 mph.

      Who’s hot

Toronto is 35-16 in its last 51 meetings with Baltimore.
Philadelphia is 14-3 in its last 17 meetings with Florida.
Chicago is 8-2 in its last 10 road games.
Colorado is 16-5 over its last 21 overall.

      Who’s not

Pittsburgh is 7-44 in its last 51 road games.
Washington Nationals are 16-40 in their last 56 road games.
Arizona is 5-17 in its last 22 meetings with Cincinnati.
Milwaukee is 3-8 in its last 11 overall.
Boston is 2-6 over its last eight overall.

      Key stat

15-5-2 – The over’s record in Kansas City’s last 22 home games heading into the Chiefs’ home opener against the San Diego Chargers on Monday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Shawne Merriman (Achilles), San Diego Chargers – Merriman was back in a protective boot during Saturday’s walk-though and is officially listed as doubtful for Monday’s game.

      Game of the day

Baltimore Ravens at New York Jets

      Notable quotable

"I'm not a rookie. I've been in this league for 13 years. If I get an offer after the season, I consider that a slap in the face.”
"I don't want this to be negative. I want to be here. But from a business standpoint this probably will be my final season as a Patriot."
-Patriots WR Randy Moss on his contract situation following Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Moss is in the final year of his contract with New England.

      Tips and notes

It looks like the San Diego Chargers are getting ready to throw rookie running back Ryan Matthews into the deep end in his first NFL start. “I want Ryan to have an opportunity to have an impact on this game,” Chargers coach Norv Turner told reporters. “So he’s going to get the ball. I think in one of those (preseason) halves he had 11 carries. I would think he’s going to get double-digit touches in each half (against the Chiefs). I’d like to see that happen.”

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is ready to play a big role in Monday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. Even though he has only been in Jets camp for about a week, the club expects him to play all the snaps he normally would.

If you’re expecting to cash in on unders in Baltimore Ravens games against this year, tread carefully. Baltimore retooled its receiving corps in the offseason and is expect to improve on the ninth-ranked scoring offense it had in 2009. "If we just continue on that road, I think we will become not just the best offense, but the winningest offense in the NFL — and that's all we what we want to do," wideout Derrick Mason told. "You can get all the numbers and still not win. What we want to do is make sure that if we do get the numbers, that we're winning in the process."

        Monday's six-pack

-- Dodgers' John Lindsey got his first big league hit in six AB Sunday, after waiting 16 years to get called to the majors. Good for him.

-- Braves trail Phillies by game in NL East with three weeks to go, but are game ahead of Padres/Giants loser in Wild Card race. Colorado has won its last 10 games, trail NL West leaders by 1.5 games.

-- Roy Oswalt is 6-0, 1.88 in his last eight starts, as he/Halladay try to lead the Phillies back to the postseason. Good thing Phil's front office is aggressive and does things to help their team win.

-- Royals scored six times in top of first inning, lost 12-6 to the White Sox; you don't see that every day.

-- Marlins' OF Mike Stanton is 20 years old; he hit his 19th/20th HRs of season Sunday. Kid is going to be a big star.

-- Somewhere up in football heaven, George Allen is eating ice cream and smiling today. Redskins beat Dallas, in their first game under the new general manager, George's son Bruce Allen.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

One thing is always true about Week 1; we overreact to everything that happens, whether its good or bad. With that in mind, comments on the first Sunday of America's favorite sport..........

        13) 49ers were 4-5 to win the NFC West; heavy favorites; they looked more like the '76 Bucs than a division champ Sunday, losing to Seattle 31-6 in a game that had Pete Carroll running around the sidelines like a 10-year old, just like he did when he was at USC. Only difference is that in Seattle, its legal to pay the players.

        12) First three times 49ers had ball, they drove to Seattle 5-6-6 yard line but never scored a TD, kicking two FGs instead. First three times they had the ball, they ran 32 plays for 139 yards and nine first downs. Rest of the game, they ran 36 plays for 104 yards, five first downs and no points. The NFC West is wide open, with no real strong teams.

        11) Texans ran ball 42 times for 257 yards in outmuscling Colts 34-24, just second time they've beaten Indy in 17 meetings. Manning passed for 419 net yards, but Colts only ran the ball ten times the whole game.

        10) Arizona and the Giants both won despite turning the ball over four times. This seldom happens in the NFL. Its a handicapping red flag.

        9) New England started two drives 80+ yards from end zone and scored a TD both times. The other 27 teams combined had 40 such drives, and scored a total of only 42 points.

        8) Cleveland led 14-3 in the last minute of first half at Tampa, and had the ball in Buc territory, driving to another score, before Delhomme got rushed and threw an unbelievably hideous, high school-like INT that the Bucs ran back to the 3-yard line. It got Tampa Bay's crowd back in the game, and Cleveland never scored again, losing 17-14.

        7) Dennis Dixon was 18-26-/211 passing for Pittsburgh, averaging 7.3 yards/pass attempt, as Steelers won an emotional home opener in OT vs Atlanta. Pittsburgh outrushed the Falcons, 143-58, winning the first of four games they'll play without Ben Roethlisberger.

        6) Rooting for a Mike Martz offense is a roller coaster ride; Bears gained 463 yards, averaged 9.3 ypa, but also turned ball over four times, didn't score on a drive when they took over on the Detroit 1-yard line and it took a strange replay reversal for Chicago to survive the Lions, 19-14, in a game where Detroit's starting QB didn't play the second half.

        5) At one point in the second half of the Green Bay-Philly game, we got talking about whether Andy Reid has a QB controversy on his hands when Kolb gets healthy, then we realized there is no controversy. Vick is simply better than Kolb, he gives team more energy. He should start.

        4) Rams led Arizona 13-10 when they sacked Derek Anderson, forced a fumble and Clifton Ryan picked the ball up, rumbling towards clinching TD, or at least one that would have given St Louis a 20-10 lead. What happened? Arizona WR Breaston caught him from behind, stripped the ball on the 2-yard line, Cardinals recovered and went on to win 17-13 in an intense, sloppy divisional game.

        3) My impression of Sam Bradford was very positive; he's poised, he can zip the ball (converted a 3rd-and-16 on the last drive), but he needs time, experience and he needs better teammates (mostly at OL/WR).

        2) Miami won for first time in last six visits to Buffalo, as Fish held the Bills to nine first downs and 166 total yards. If you had a vote on what the worst team in NFL is right now, Bills would get a lot of support.

        1) The more I think about it, if you gave Pete Carroll a turban and a bad sportscoat with glitter on it, he could be the Grand Wizard of Wrestling. At one point, the side judge had to grab him and almost throw him back to the sideline after a good play by the Seahawks.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Brett Myers (11-7, 2.91 ERA), Houston Astros

Myers has blanked two of his last three opponents heading into Monday’s start against the Milwaukee Brewers and has a 1.35 ERA over those three games. He will be looking for some revenge after dropping a 5-2 decision the last time he faced Milwaukee, allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings pitched.

                Slumping

Bronson Arroyo (14-10, 4.09 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

Arroyo is coming off a nasty 9-2 loss against the Colorado Rockies in which he gave up seven runs and three homers over just 4 1/3 innings of work. He has now lost three straight games and has a 6.75 ERA over that slump. Arroyo has allowed eight home runs over his last six outings.

Luke Hochevar (5-4, 5.11 ERA), Kansas City

Hochevar is working on a 5.00 ERA over his last three outings. He came out of the pen to work three innings of relief against the Twins the last time he took the hill, allowing three runs on five hits. It was his first MLB appearance since mid-June.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (+105, 8)

Two of the game’s most dominating left-handed starters square off on Monday night as New York’s CC Sabathia goes head-to-head with Tampa Bay’s David Price on Monday.

Price has allowed more than three earned runs only once over his last nine starts, but has only five wins over that span. Sabathia has allowed five runs in two of his last three outings, but sandwiched an eight-inning shutout of the Oakland A’s in between.

You won’t see a better lefty-lefty matchup around so we’ll stick with the betting playbook and play the under.

                Pick: Under

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles (-121, 9)

The Baltimore Orioles have been a completely different team since Buck Showalter took over managerial duties. After a terrible start to the year, Baltimore is putting some runs on the board and isn’t an automatic loss when playing on the road.

Baltimore dropped a 6-2 decision at Detroit on Sunday but had won six of seven before that.

                Pick: Orioles

                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 13 in Baseball History...

1909 - Ty Cobb clinches the American League home run title with his ninth round-tripper. It is an inside-the-park drive against the Browns. In fact, all his nine home runs this season are inside the park, including two in one game on July 15. He is the only player in this century to lead in home runs without hitting one out of the park.

1925 - Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance threw a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader as the Dodgers won 10-1.

1927 - Babe Ruth hits two home runs to give him 52 for the year as the Yankees win a pair from Cleveland to clinch the American League pennant. It is Miller Huggins' fifth pennant, tying him with Connie Mack. The Yankees win the nightcap 5-3, as Waite Hoyt wins his 20th.

1932 - The New York Yankees clinched the American League pennant as Joe McCarthy became the first manager to win flags in both leagues.

1934 - Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis sells the World Series broadcast rights to the Ford Motor Company for $100,000. Previously no fee had been charged.

1936 - Bob Feller, just seventeen, beat the Philadelphia A's 5-2 on two hits. The Cleveland youngster fanned an American League-record seventeen batters.

1938 - A special committee names Alexander Cartwright to Baseball's Hall of Fame for originating the sport's basic concepts. Henry Chadwick, inventor of the box score and the first baseball writer, is also honored.

1946 - The Boston Red Sox clinch the American League pennant, edging the Cleveland Indians 1-0 on Ted Williamss inside-the-park home run, the only one of his career. Williams punches the ball over the shift when left fielder Pat Seerey pulls in behind the shortstop position.

1951 - The Cards split a rare doubleheader with two different teams, defeating the Giants 6-4 in the first game in the afternoon and losing to the Braves in the nightcap. The Cards manage just one hit in losing to Warren Spahn 2-0. It is the first time a team in the National League has played two different teams in the same day since the early years of the century.

1958 - Warren Spahn becomes the first lefty to win twenty or more games nine times, as the Braves beat St. Louis 8-2. Eddie Plank and Lefty Grove each won twenty games eight times.

                1963 - Jim Bouton's 20th win clinches the Yankees 28th pennant. It's a 2-0 shutout in Minnesota.

1964 - St. Louis becomes the first National League club to score in each inning since the Giants did it on June 1, 1923. They coast 15-2 at Wrigley Field.

1965 - Willie Mays hit his 500th career home run off Houston's Don Nottebart in a 5-1 San Francisco victory.

1969 - Bobby Bonds becomes the fourth 30-homer, 30-steal player in Major League history, but the Reds beat the Giants 6-4.

1971 - Frank Robinson hit his 500th career home run off Detroit's Fred Scherman. The ninth-inning shot gave the Baltimore Orioles a split of a doubleheader against the Tigers.

1978 - The New York Yankees beat the Tigers 7-3 at Detroit to move into sole possession of first place for the first time after being 14 games out.

1983 - Oakland's Rickey Henderson steals three bases in a 6-5 win over Texas to give him 101 for the season. It is his third season with one-hundred or more steals.

1986 - Texas hit a club record seven home runs, including two each by Darrell Porter and Ruben Sierra, as the Rangers routed the Minnesota Twins 14-1. The Rangers rocked starter Bert Blyleven for five home runs, raising his season total to forty-four and breaking an American League record.

1989 - Fay Vincent is elected baseball's eighth commissioner, succeeding the late Bart Giamatti, whom he served as deputy commissioner.

1991 - A 55-ton block collapses in Montreal's Olympic Stadium. The Expos, already in last place, will have to play the rest of their home games on the road.

1995 - Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker, the middle infield of the Detroit Tigers, set an American League record when they played in their 1,915th game together.

1998 - Sammy Sosa becomes the second player of the week to break the home run record of Roger Maris. Sosa, who had watched Mark McGwire tie and set the mark against the Cubs on September September 8, launches two home runs against the Brewers at Wrigley Field. The second one breaks the record, sets off a mad dash of fans chasing the ball on the street outside the ballpark, and sets up a game-tying rally against the Brewers in the ninth inning. Mark Grace later wins the game for the Cubs 11-10 with a home run.
