-Ken Whisenhunt on the chemistry between Larry Fitzgerald and quarterback Derek Anderson. Fitzgerald has practiced the past few days after missing most of the preseason with a knee injury.

    Tips and notes

Bill Parcells was “very disappointed” in Chad Henne’s development before resigning from the Miami Dolphins earlier this week. Henne completed less than 50 percent of his passes in preseason.

Albert Haynesworth will play for the Washington Redskins against the Dallas Cowboys, but is expected to be on the field primarily on passing downs

Atlanta Dream at Seattle Storm (-7.5, 165)

The 2010 WNBA Finals kicks off Sunday, going head-to-head with Week 1 of the NFL season. Why the all-women’s basketball league is fighting a losing battle in the TV ratings, the Seattle Storm are confident they have the edge to win where it counts – on the basketball court.

Seattle, which won the WNBA title in 2004, will be relying on its experienced veteran core against the Atlanta Dream, who have only been in the league for three seasons.

“The one intangible advantage we may have over the Dream is the championship experience on this team,” Storm point guard Sue Bird wrote in special column for USA Today. “We have five titles between us on our roster, and we know that once you get to the final round, it's a very mental game.”

Seattle defeated Atlanta in both regular season meetings this season, covering the spread in each matchup. Over the past three years, the Storm are 5-1 straight up and 4-2 ATS in their six all-time meetings.

“Many fans and writers have pointed out that we beat the Dream in both of our matchups this season, but we're not even thinking about that as a predictor of how this series will turn out,” said Bird.

Both Seattle and Atlanta are undefeated in the postseason, posting identical 4-0 ATS marks.

      Pick: Seattle -7.5

Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 11 Analysis and predictions
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+4, 56.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, last in the East, suffered another blow on Labour Day when their starting QB Buck Pierce fell to another serious injury in a 27-23 loss to these Roughriders. Backup QB Steven Jyles is now the one who will try to stop a five-game losing streak.

In four starts this season, Jyles completed almost 63 percent of his pass attempts, gained 1322 yards through the air, threw eight touchdown passes and was intercepted only twice. He has the second-best QB rating in the CFL (104.1) right behind Anthony Calvillo of the Alouettes (111.6).

Grey Cup finalists last year, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have proved to be an enigma so far in 2010, mainly because of a lack of consistency on offense. After scoring tons of points in their first two games of the regular season against the Alouettes and the Lions, the Riders have had ups and downs with an offense that featured the best and the worst from QB Darian Durant.

Despite losing key players like John Chick, Stevie Baggs, Rey Williams and Eddie Davis during the offseason, the Riders’ stopper unit has been as reliable as last year. But this defense is not totally healthy.

Safety James Patrick, who leads the CFL for interceptions with seven, missed practice this week because of a knee injury that will most likely prevent him from playing on Sunday. Linebacker Daniel Francis is also injured but expected to play against the Bombers.

        Pick: Saskatchewan

          Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Streaking

Roy Oswalt, Philadelphia Phillies (11-13, 3.09 ERA)

The Phillies right hander is heating up at the right time. With the playoff hunt at full speed, Oswalt has lifted Philadelphia with his recent outings. He’s gone undefeated since July 30, posting a 5-1 record and 2.30 ERA since joining the defending NL champs. In his last start, Oswalt allowed four runs on six hits over seven innings for a 7-4 win over the Florida Marlins.

Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks (9-9, 4.01 ERA)

Kennedy hasn’t tasted defeat since August 4, going 3-0 in his last six trips to the bump. The D-backs righty is 2-0 with a trim 1.20 ERA in his last three appearances, including giving up only two hits over eight innings in a 2-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants for a no decision.

          Slumping

Jeff Vargas, Seattle Mariners (9-9, 3.72 ERA)

The Seattle southpaw is stuck in a slippery slump, losing four straight starts. Vargas allowed five runs over just 4 1-3 innings of work in his last start, but is now working off an extra days rest. He’s 2-1 with a 2.68 ERA versus the Los Angeles Angels for his career.

Jeff Niemann, Tampa Bay Rays (10-6, 4.28 ERA)

The Rays righty isn’t helping his team’s cause this September. Niemann has been downright putrid since coming off the DL. He’s 0-3 with a 20.70 ERA including giving up six earned runs – two home runs – in just under two innings pitched. Niemann has allowed seven home runs in his past five games, and now faces the top home-run hitting team in the Toronto Blue Jays.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Braves
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves

The Braves have their eyes on the National League East title while the Cardinals are fighting to keep their season alive.

          A season on the brink

The critics have waited all season for the upstart Reds to come back to earth. Unfortunately for St. Louis, the critics are still waiting. At 73-66, the Cardinals find themselves six games behind the Reds in the NL Central with only 23 games to go.

The Redbirds blew a 4-1 lead in Friday night’s series opener as the Braves roughed up Chris Carpenter en route to an 8-6 victory. St. Louis inches closer to postseason irrelevance with every loss.

          The end of an era

With the Braves leading the wildcard chase by one game and only a game out of first place in the NL East, Bobby Cox’s club is poised to make one last run before he retires at the end of the year. Cox’s remarkable resume includes a 13-year streak of division titles and 2,494 career wins - fourth on the all-time list.

Sunday night’s tilt is of historical significance, as it will be some time before a game features opposing managers with as many wins. Cardinals skipper Tony LaRussa sits at third on the all-time list with 2,625, while the top two spots are occupied by Connie Mack and John McGraw, both long deceased.

          Let’s get it started

Braves ace Tim Hudson will take the mound in search of his 16th win Sunday night. Despite dropping his last two starts to the lowly Pirates and Mets, Hudson (15-7, 2.41 ERA) is having one of the finest seasons of his 12-year career.

Is his last appearance, Hudson was bested by James McDonald in a 5-0 loss at Pittsburgh. Hudson appeared sharp early, but let the game slip away when the Pirates got to him for four runs in the seventh.

“It just stinks,” Hudson told MLB.com after the game. “I felt like we should have won the ballgame, but just two pitches cost us the game.”

Cox came to his ace’s defense, adding, “(Hudson) pitched plenty good to win tonight. We’ve just got to get more runs.”

Hudson will attempt to right the ship against Cardinals’ journeyman Kyle Lohse. Lohse (2-7, 7.13 ERA) last faced the Braves back on April 22 when he allowed three runs over seven innings in a no-decision. He has a 4.70 lifetime ERA against Atlanta, but is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two career starts at Turner Field.

          There’s no place like home

With Friday’s comeback win, the Braves notched their MLB-leading 50th home win of the season. At 19.56 units, they have been baseball’s most profitable home team by a wide margin. The Cardinals, meanwhile, have lost 11 of their last 14 road games. They are -2026 units on the road for the season, third worst in the majors.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Pittsburgh at Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Reds snapped a five game losing skid on Friday night with a 4-3 win over the Pirates in extra innings and then won another extra-innings affair 5-4 over the Bucs on Saturday. Those two wins were just what they needed to get back on track. The Reds still sit with a comfortable seven-game lead over the
St. Louis Cardinals as they send Johnny Cueto to the mound against Brian Burres. Take the Reds to close out the sweep if you can handle the chalk.

          Pick: Reds

          Baltimore at Detroit

The Orioles head into this game having won six of their last seven after Saturday night’s impressive 5-3 victory. Baltimore pounded out 16 hits and left 12 runners stranded, but the O’s have scored at least five runs in all but three of its last eight games.

Detroit looks to bounce back against Chris Tilman, who has won just one of his seven starts this year. Tilman is working on a 6.46 ERA over his last three.

          Pick: Over

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          This Day in Baseball
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 12 in Baseball History...

1914 - Yankees shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh, twenty-three, replaces Frank Chance and becomes the all-time youngest manager, and the seventh in the club's twelve-year existence. He will go ten-ten and will manage next at Cleveland in 1928.

1930 - Brooklyn catcher Al Lopez drives one over the head of Cincinnati left fielder Bob Meusel, and the ball bounces into the bleachers at Ebbets Field. It will be the Major Leagues' last recorded bounce home run. The National League declares after the season that such a hit will henceforth be a double. The American League had made the change after the 1929 season.

1932 - Brooklyn's Johnny Frederick hit his Major League record sixth pinch-homer of the season in the ninth inning to spark the Dodgers to a 4-3 triumph over the Chicago Cubs at Ebbets Field.

1947 - Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit two home runs - his seventh and eighth in four games - for a Major League record.

1962 - Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators set a record by fanning twenty-one Baltimore Orioles in a 16-inning, 2-1 victory.

1976 - Minnie Minoso singled in three at-bats as the designated hitter for the Chicago White Sox. At age 53 he became the oldest player to get a hit in a regulation game.

1979 - Carl Yastrzemski got his 3,000th hit - a ground single off Jim Beattie - as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 9-2.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets broke the rookie strikeout record, fanning sixteen Pittsburgh Pirates to give him 251, six more than Herb Score had in 1955. Gooden broke the record by striking out Marvell Wynne in the sixth inning.

1991 - Nolan Ryan's 4-3 victory over the Twins is his 312th career win. It also makes the Rangers' pitcher just the second pitcher with twenty 10-win seasons.

1993 - Paul Molitor's home run against California puts him over the 100-RBI mark for the first time in his career. At thirty-seven, Molitor is the oldest to reach this plateau for the first time.

1996 - Seattle's Alex Rodriguez set a Major League record for a shortstop with his 88th extra-base hit in an 8-5 win over Kansas City.

1996 - Bernie Williams drove in eight runs with two home runs and a single to lead the New York Yankees to a 12-3 victory over Detroit.

              Daily Sports Roundup: September 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The National Football League offers up a full slate of Sunday matchups, while the Phillies close out their road series against the rival Mets.

              Colliding on the gridiron . . .

After opening up on Thursday the 2010 NFL schedule begins in earnest with 13 games on Sunday, including Dallas at Washington in the 8:20pm ET matchup on NBC. The Cowboys went 3-2 during the preseason and will be looking to repeat as the NFC East champs, while the Redskins went 2-2 over their exhibition schedule and are hoping that new QB Donovan McNabb (despite a tender ankle) can help them vastly improve on their 4-12 campaign from 2009. The oddsmakers are looking for Dallas to roll to a road win in their first game of the year, setting them as 3.5-point favorites with the total at 40.

There are just three late-afternoon games around the NFL on Sunday, with San Francisco (-3) at Seattle, Green Bay (-3) at Philadelphia, and Arizona (-4) at St. Louis. At 1pm ET, though, it's Oakland at Tennessee (-6), Carolina at the Giants (-6.5), Indianapolis (-2) at Houston, Denver at Jacksonville (-2.5), Atlanta (-2) at Pittsburgh, Miami (-3) at Buffalo, Detroit at Chicago (-6.5), Cleveland at Tampa Bay (-3), and Cincinnati at New England (-4.5). Patriots fans got a scare on Thursday morning when Tom Brady was involved in a traffic accident; the star quarterback, though, was fine afterwards. The total for the Bengals/Patriots matchup for Sunday is listed at 45 points.

Also, there is one Canadian Football League game on the schedule for Sunday, with Saskatchewan at Winnipeg. The Roughriders (6-3 SU, 5-4 ATS) and Blue Bombers (2-7 SU, 4-5 ATS) played just last week, with Saskatchewan winning 27-23 at home. Oddsmakers have the Riders listed as 4-point road favorites for their Sunday matchup.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

                Sunday's six-pack

Some more NFL trends for Week 1.......

-- Eagles covered two of last seven as a home underdog.

-- Buffalo is 1-6-1 in last eight games as a home underdog.

-- Falcons covered their first game in 10 of last 12 seasons.

-- Bengals are 6-2 vs spread as underdog of more than 3 points.

-- Texans covered six of last eight as a home underdog.

-- Browns covered five of their last six road games.

                *******************************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday......

                13) Denard Robinson was The Man Saturday; ran ball for 258 yards at Notre Dame, threw for 244 more as Wolverines won 28-24; that figures to make Rich Rodriguez' life a lot easier, at least for a week. This was the sixth time in row the underdog won when Michigan visits South Bend.

                12) Red flag for Michigan; take away Robinson, and they had 13 rushes for 30 yards. Their running backs have to give them some production.

                11) Freshman Marcus Lattimore ran ball 37 times for 182 yards, turning Fun 'n Gun offense into Ground Spurrier, as South Carolina wore down Georgia Bulldogs 17-6. Gamecocks looked like USC in the Ricky Bell era back in the mid-70's. Lattimore is the real deal.

                10) Central Florida hadn't scored a point on offense when they inserted prize freshman QB Jeffrey Godfrey after NC State took a 28-7 lead late in 3rd quarter. Over the last 20:00 of the game, Godfrey produced 160 yards of total offense, and only reason UCF didn't tie game was because of a lost fumble on the Wolfpack 12-yard line in the last minute.

                9) By the way, did you know Central Florida is the third-biggest college in America? Think they're headed to the Big East soon, especially since Michael Jordan's sons play hoop at UCF? Just asking.......

                8) In their 36-24 win over Miami, Ohio State allowed a punt return for a TD and a kick return for a TD in same game for the first time ever.

                7) I say this every September, but no one listens; DON'T SCHEDULE I-AA OPPONENTS!!!!!! What is there to gain by playing these teams? Minnesota lost to South Dakota, Akron lost to Gardner-Webb, Virginia Tech lost to James Madison. For the Gophers/Hokies, its really stupid, since they could bring in a crummy MAC or Sun Belt team and they're still a prohibitive favorite, without the embarrassment if you lose.

                6) Very, very tough loss for Marshall Friday night; Herd was up 21-6 in 4th quarter, gunning for its first win against West Virginia, but they lost a fumble on the WVa 4-yard line, then Geno Smith did his best imitation of John Elway, driving Mountaineers 98 yards to tie game with 0:12 left. Marshall missed tying 39-yard FG wide right in OT, and West Virginia escaped Huntington with a very unlikely win.

                5) Twice in 24 hours, a receiver scored on a long TD pass, but dropped the ball before reaching the goal line while celebrating their big play. The replay system didn't nullify either TD; they didn't even check either one which is a major flaw in the system.

Kids who fumbled early play for Marshall and Notre Dame.

                4) Couple of receivers flipped going into the end zone after scores; next year, if they get flagged for hotdogging, the penalty will negate the TD. Want to see the first coach who loses a TD because of showboating.

                3) Halftime score Saturday; Wake Forest 35, Duke 35. There were total of 1,114 yards in this game; Duke scored 48 points, was getting five and didn't cover. Alabama visits Durham soon; that should be fun.

                2) BYU did good job stifling Washington's running game last week, but then went to Air Force this week and gave up 409 rushing yards to the Falcons in Air Force's 35-14 win in the MWC opener for both teams.

                1) South Dakota QB Dante Warren passed for 352 yards, ran for 81 in Coyotes' 41-38 win at Minnesota. Gophers host USC next week, but in a small piece of good news, they don't play Michigan this year. Imagine the damage Denard Robinson would do to them, if Dante Warren hung 433 total yards on a slowish Minnesota defense? It would've been ugly.
