    Daily Sports Roundup: September 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays look for a win in Toronto, the Crimson Tide battle the Nittany Lions, and the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series race in Richmond.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

No. 1 Alabama (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) will play host to No. 18 Penn State (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) to highlight the busy college football schedule for Saturday. The top-ranked Crimson Tide warmed up for this game with a 48-3 pounding of San Jose State in their opener last week. Tide QB Greg McElroy went 13-of-15 for 218 yards passing and one TD in that game, while star RB Mark Ingram sat out to nurse his knee injury (he's doubtful for Saturday). The Nittany Lions had no trouble with Youngstown State in their opener, winning 44-14 behind QB Robert Bolden (20-of-29 for 239 yards and two touchdowns). Alabama is listed as the 12-point favorite for this Saturday contest, with the total at 44.

There are three other ranked matchups on the college football schedule for Saturday, with No. 22 Georgia at No. 24 South Carolina (-3.5), No. 17 Florida State at No. 10 Oklahoma (-7.5), and also No. 12 Miami at No. 2 Ohio State (-8). In other Top 25 action on Saturday it'll be San Jose State at No. 11 Wisconsin (-38), No. 15 Georgia Tech (-14) at Kansas, South Florida at No. 8 Florida (-15), Idaho at No. 6 Nebraska (-28), James Madison at No. 13 Virginia Tech, Iowa State at No. 9 Iowa (-13.5), UNLV at No. 20 Utah (-22), Tennessee Tech at No. 4 TCU, Wyoming at No. 5 Texas (-29), No. 19 LSU (-10) at Vanderbilt, No. 7 Oregon (-12) at Tennessee, Louisiana-Monroe at No. 14 Arkansas (-34), Virginia at No. 16 USC (-19.5), and finally No. 25 Stanford (-6) at UCLA.

As well, there are two Canadian Football League games on tap for Saturday, with Montreal at Hamilton and Toronto at British Columbia. The Alouettes (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS) were beaten 38-17 at home by B.C. last week with starting QB Anthony Calvillo on the sidelines, while the Tiger-Cats (5-4 SU, 5-4 ATS) have won four games in a row. The Argos (5-4 SU, 5-4 ATS) are looking to put an end to a two-game losing skid, with the Lions (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS) pegged as the 5-point home favorites for their Saturday game.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Minnesota at Cleveland, Kansas City at the White Sox, Baltimore at Detroit, the Yankees at Texas, Boston at Oakland, Seattle at the Angels, and Tampa Bay at Toronto. Wade Davis (11-9, 4.39 ERA) is expected to take on Ricky Romero (12-8, 3.51 ERA) in that Rays/Jays matchup. Righthander Davis beat the Blue Jays in his August 30 outing, holding them to two runs on six hits over 7 2-3 innings of work. Lefthander Romero pitched against Tampa Bay on August 31, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits over 7 1-3 innings in that win.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's then Florida at Washington, Philadelphia at the Mets, San Francisco at San Diego, the Dodgers at Houston, the Cubs at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Arizona at Colorado, and St. Louis at Atlanta. The Cardinals are slated to send Jake Westbrook (7-10, 4.46 ERA) to the hill in that last contest, while the Braves counter with Tommy Hanson (9-11, 3.58 ERA). Righthander Westbrook had to settle for a no-decision against the Brewers in his last trip to the mound, giving up two runs on five hits over his six innings pitched. Righthander Hanson was tagged with a loss by the Pirates last time out, surrendering three runs (two earned) over six innings.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will get their last shot at qualifying for the Chase on Saturday when they take to the track in the Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Kyle Busch, won won at Richmond earlier in the season, is the oddsmakers' 7/2 favorite to get the win on Saturday night, with defending champion Denny Hamlin pegged at 11/2 odds. Clint Bowyer, who is sitting in the 12th and final Chase spot heading into Richmond, is at 28/1 odds to visit victory lane, with 13th-place Ryan Newman at 30/1, and 14th-place Jamie McMurray at 30/1 as well. Jimmie Johnson has won three of the past seven Cup races at Richmond, and he's listed at 7/1.

Bettors' best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

      Weather to watch

Royals at White Sox: There is a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Yankees at Texas Rangers: There is a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Cardinals at Braves: There is a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Orioles at Tigers: There is a 50 percent chance of thundershowers.

Twins at Indians: There is a 50 percent chance of thundershowers.

Red Sox at Athletics: There is an expected 11 mph wind blowing out toward left center.

Mariners at Angels: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing out toward left center.

      Who’s hot

The Athletics are 7-3 in their past 10 home games.

The Rockies are 36-15 in their past 51 home games

The over is 11-5-2 in the Cubs past 18 road games.

      Who’s not

The Royals are 6-20 in their past 26 road games.

The under is 7-2 in the Twins past nine road games.

The under is 8-2 in the Padres past 10 home games.

      Key stat

0: Carries for Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in the fourth quarter of the team’s 14-9, season-opening loss in New Orleans to the Saints. The Vikings ran just eight offensive plays in the fourth quarter – all passes – and coach Brad Childress remarked after the game how gassed quarterback Brett Favre looked. Poor game planning, poor coaching, poor offensive line play, poor play calling and poor athletes at receiver all add up to the Vikings looking like a poor play going forward.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Washington Redskins can’t wait to mercilessly blitz the Dallas Cowboys with their new 3-4 defense on Sunday. Starting right tackle Marc Colombo and starting left guard Kyle Kosier will miss Sunday night’s game with knee injuries, forcing Alex Barron and Montrae Holland into action in their place for Dallas. Rookie tackle Sam Young also will miss the game. The Cowboys offensive line was an area of concern entering the season and for fantasy players and bettors alike, could be a huge issue, at least for Week 1.

      Game of the Day

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets (+101, 8.5)

      Notable quotes

"I guarantee without a shadow of a doubt, every owner had a conversation about what they saw and what it means moving forward. Our players are together. Even though we're playing football, we're businessmen and family men. Even though we're about to go into he heat of battle, we're conscious of everything that's going on around our game right now and the lockout that's looming." – Bills safety George Wilson on the Player’s Union’s show of unity prior to the Vikings-Saints game on Thursday night.

      Tips and notes

Novak Djokovic has won five of his last 11 meetings with Roger Federer and the No. 2 and No. 3 players in the world have split their last six encounters. At the U.S. Open, however, Federer is 3-0 against Djokovic and has dropped only one set in those matches, which have come consecutively in the last three seasons. "You never know what's going to happen," Djokovic said on Wednesday, not sounding too confident. "I don't want to think about those losses in the last three years."

Jason Heyward was double-switched out of Atlanta's 8-3 loss to St. Louis during the fifth inning on Thursday. He appeared to favor his leg while trying to beat out a bunt, but Heyward said afterward that the move was not health-related. If true, that is good news for the reeling Braves, who have lost six out of eight games and now trail the Phillies by one game in the NL East. Heyward is batting .441 over his last 19 games.

The Miami Hurricanes are plagued by injuries heading into Saturday's showdown against Ohio State. Defensive tackle Jeremy Lewis, fullback John Calhoun, and running back Darion Hall were confirmed out for the year on Thursday, and running back Graig Cooper (doubtful) is almost certain not to play. As such, the Buckeyes are expecting a heavy dose of Miami QB Jacory Harris. "Jacory Harris is a guy who you can really tell wants to throw the ball deep," said OSU cornerback Chimdi Chekwa. "They want the home run, and they'll go for it. ''So we're taking it as we have to get after them up front and then get (Harris) under pressure and really get into his head and throw some different stuff at him, different zone pressures; any way you can get into his head and try to make him throw a bad ball."

        Saturday's six-pack

Some NFL trends for Week 1.......

-- Miami is 6-17-1 in its last 24 games as a road favorite.

-- Rams are 6-14 vs. spread in their last 20 games as a home underdog. -- Giants failed to cover their last five games as a favorite in non-divisional games.

-- Buccaneers are 1-10 vs. spread in their last 11 home games.

-- Seahawks covered once in their last ten games as an underdog.

-- Over last 11 years, Jacksonville is 9-2 against the spread in Week 1.

        ************************************************** *****

Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff for a summer Saturday........

        13) If I owned the Oklahoma City Thunder (especially considering all the bad karma we have for screwing Seattle out of the Sonics), I’m not sure I’d want Westbrook/Durant spending all summer playing for Team USA. These guys need some downtime.

        12) Hopefully, our hoop team will win over in Turkey, but I don’t want to hear the word “patriotism” at all. Its about selling sneakers and expanding the NBA overseas, simple as that. If our team doesn’t win these international tournaments, the NBA looks bad.

        11) Russia’s coach is an American who played at Princeton for Pete Carril from 1977-81, when he was a teammate of Oregon State coach (and 1st brother-in-law) Craig Robinson.

        10) Guys who stay on an NFL practice squad all season make around $88,000 for the season; even Allen Iverson wouldn’t scoff at that, just for practicing.

        9) A’s want to move from Oakland to San Jose, 36 miles further away from San Francisco that Oakland is, but the Giants are blocking the move; did you know San Jose is the 10th biggest city in America? Bud Selig went to college with A’s owner Lew Wolff; I’m thinking the A’s will eventually get their ballpark in Silicon Valley.

        8) Baylor’s Robert Griffin is a really good QB; funny thing, one of his offensive linemen is also named Robert Griffin- he’s the left guard.

        7) After beating Central Michigan in OT Thursday, Temple Owls are now 2-0 for first time since 1981.

        6) Maybe if Brett Favre had come to training camp on time and spent extra time working with his receivers, some of those passes last night wouldn’t have hit the ground. Ya think?

        5) If I owned the Chargers. I’d have to give my GM a call and ask him why we didn’t keep this Brees fella as our QB. He seems like a pretty good player.

        4) Nick Saban is generally regarded as the best college football coach right now, but if he had chosen Brees over Daunte Culpepper when he was coaching the Dolphins, he’d still be in south Florida. Sean Payton would probably be selling used cars in Shreveport by now.

        3) Blind resume between two players who play the same position. Player A: .275 BA, 10 HR, 52 RBI, 80 R, .333 OB%, .386 SP.
        Player B: .260 BA, 10 HR, 60 RBI, 96 R, .326 OB%, .366 SP

Which would player would pay more money to next year and by how much? Player B is 36 and plays on a first place team. Player B is 34 and plays for a team that isn't going to the playoffs this season.

We'll let you know which player is which tomorrow.

        2) Great name for a hitter. San Francisco 1B prospect Brandon Belt.

        1) US Internet users spent 9.9% of their Internet time in August on Facebook, the most of any single site. Not sure, but I don’t think this site you’re reading now cracked the top ten. Just a guess. Something to shoot for next year.

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-3, 52)

The Alouettes were stunned earlier this week when Walter Spencer, their top special teams player, was almost killed outside a bar in Montreal. A loss in Hamilton could cost the Alouettes first place in the East.

Adrian McPherson comes back from a knee injury to try and replace Anthony Calvillo, who’s still recovering from that nasty hit he took a few weeks ago. McPherson insists he’s in game shape and vows he will be able to run the ball at ease despite wearing a brace for precautionary reasons.

The Alouettes want to bounce back from a tough loss to B.C. in front of their Montreal fans but it won’t be an easy task against these TiCats. Hamilton renewed its confidence after two straight wins against the Toronto Argonauts.

          Pick: Hamilton

          Toronto Argonauts at B.C. Lions (-4.5, 48.5)

The Argonauts head into Vancouver without some their key players. Dominic Picard and Taylor Robertson will be the only two regular starters on offensive line for Toronto. The Argos will also be without star receiver Jeremaine Copeland (elbow) and Adriano Belli (foot) who has been one of their pillars on defense.

To have a shot at victory in this one, the Argonauts will need to QB Cleo Lemon and RB Cory Boyd to be as productive as they were earlier in the season. But for that to happen, the refurbished offensive line will need to play above expectations.

The Lions are a better team than their record indicates. Just as the Alouettes.

          Pick: British Columbia

          SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 12

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+4, 56.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, last in the East, suffered another blow on Labour Day when their starting QB Buck Pierce fell to another serious injury in a 27-23 loss to these Roughriders. Backup QB Steven Jyles is now the one who will try to stop a five-game losing streak.

In four starts this season, Jyles completed almost 63 percent of his pass attempts, gained 1322 yards through the air, threw eight touchdown passes and was intercepted only twice. He has the second-best QB rating in the CFL (104.1) right behind Anthony Calvillo of the Alouettes (111.6).

Grey Cup finalists last year, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have proved to be an enigma so far in 2010, mainly because of a lack of consistency on offense. After scoring tons of points in their first two games of the regular season against the Alouettes and the Lions, the Riders have had ups and downs with an offense that featured the best and the worst from QB Darian Durant.

Despite losing key players like John Chick, Stevie Baggs, Rey Williams and Eddie Davis during the offseason, the Riders’ stopper unit has been as reliable as last year. But this defense is not totally healthy.

Safety James Patrick, who leads the CFL for interceptions with seven, missed practice this week because of a knee injury that will most likely prevent him from playing on Sunday. Linebacker Daniel Francis is also injured but expected to play against the Bombers.

          Pick: Saskatchewan

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Jason Marquis, Washington Nationals (2-7, 7.14 ERA)

Stay with me on this one.

Marquis has been about as reliable as any starter in the league over his past four outings. The right-hander entered August as one of the worst pitchers in the Majors, but has settled down, winning his past two starts.

The past four times he has toed the rubber, Marquis has allowed just six earned runs over 24 innings, throwing over 90 pitches in each of those outings. And the veteran pitcher says he no longer resembles the gas can that took the mound earlier this season.

"That wasn't Jason Marquis; it was Jason Marquis but pitching hurt, trying to battle through," Marquis, told the Associated Press. "Unfortunately it didn't work out the way I wanted and I put my team in jeopardy with some losses. I feel like since I've come back, this is what they signed me for."

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (11-10, 2.30 ERA)

This should be your American League Cy Young winner.

Hernandez is coming off back-to-back shutouts and has allowed only one earned run combined the past six times he has taken the mound – an astounding stretch of 45 innings.

King Felix leads the American League in strikeouts (209), innings pitched (219.1) and is second in ERA and third in complete games (5).

"I've been on teams where's it's been like that for a guy for maybe 10, 12 starts but not a complete season," Seattle third baseman Russell Branyan told the Associated Press. "It's unfortunate for him for his wins and losses, but you can't take away the other numbers, his ERA, his strikeout, innings pitched. He has been incredible this year."

                Slumping

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (9-8, 4.98 ERA)

Krazy K has been pitching more like Special K the past month. In fact, it got so bad, the organization was heavily debating going with a four-man rotation down the stretch.

Over the past 21.2 innings, Kendrick has given up 18 earned runs. And first base is basically a turn-style when he takes the mound.

During that span, he has given up 32 hits, including three home runs, walked six and struck out just nine.

A.J. Burnett, New York Yankees (10-13, 5.15 ERA)

Speaking of getting ready to be yanked from the rotation. The right-hander has been beyond dreadful in the second half of the year. He is eating up innings, but that’s because he is so far behind in most games that manager Joe Girardi opts to leave him in and save the bull pen.

Over his past four outings, Burnett has gone 23.1 innings in which he has yielded a staggering 21 earned runs. During that stretch he has been pounded for 33 hits and issued 12 free passes.

"I've been through this," Burnett told the Associated Press. "I'm strong enough to deal with it. I'm not going to pout. I'm not going into my next start thinking here we go again. It's a matter of being strong."

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers (-110, 8.5)

The scoreboard operators keep extra bulbs on hand for when these two squads tangle. The over is a staggering 41-19-6 in the team’s past 66 meetings, including a phenomenal 8-3-1 this season.

The Brewers score an average of 4.73 runs per game, the seventh-best mark in the Majors, and are 10th with a great .264 team batting average. The squad has a 74-58-7 over/under mark and is 3-2 against the number over its past five games.

Meantime, the Cubs are stocked with young talent and swinging some hot bats of their own. Chicago is batting .263 as a team, while scoring 4.3 runs per game. It’s over/under record is 61-68-11 this year, but the team also is yielding more than 4.5 runs per game because of a faulty pitching staff.

"There's definitely signs. We keep saying this team will come around -- we have great hitters and we can score some runs. We just need to do that,” Cubs pitcher Tom Gorzelanny told the Associated Press. "As long as we're hitting, we can score some runs and win some ballgames and I think we're showing that now.”

                Pick: Over.

Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers (-160, 7.5)

Only the Twins, Phillies, Braves and Reds won more games than the Orioles in August. In fact, the Orioles went 17-11 last month, the best mark in the American League East. That’s quite a feat coming down the home stretch in a division that features three teams vying for postseason berths.

Baltimore’s key has been its improved pitching.

The birds posted a 3.38 ERA and seven saves during the month. Compare that to the team’s overall season stats – 4.77 ERA and just 29 saves.

And if that doesn’t make you a believer, just look at what the addition of manager Buck Showalter has done for the club: the team’s pitchers have a 3.60 ERA under Showalter, an absurd improvement from the league-worst 5.18 ERA in the squad’s first 105 games.

“You can’t just walk over us,” starting pitcher Brian Matusz told the New York Times. “We’re playing good baseball right now. We’re doing all the little things right. It’s fun to come out and beat teams in our division and continue this streak that we have.”

But that bat’s haven’t been disappointing either. The team hit .257 for the month with a solid 29 home runs – not bad for a team with only 121 round-trippers on the season.

                Pick: Orioles.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 11 in Baseball History...

1875 - The first baseball game played with women professionals takes place in Springfield, Illinois. The diamond is half-sized and a nine-foot high canvas surrounds the entire field. The uniforms are similar to the male version, except the pants are shorter.

1886 - Connie Mack makes his Major League debut with Washington, catching flawlessly and contributing a single as the Nationals defeat the Phillies 4-3.

1903 - A new National Agreement signed by the National Association of minor league clubs officially organizes professional baseball under one comprehensive set of rules.

1912 - Eddie Collins stole six bases for the Philadelphia Athletics as they defeated the Detroit Tigers, 9-7. Collins stole six more in a game on Sept. 22.

1918 - The Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Carl Mays to win the World Series in six games.

1922 - The Yankees play their farewell home game in the Polo Grounds. An estimated crowd of 40,000 overflows the stadium with another 25,000 turned away. Joe Bush beats the Philadelphia A's in the opener, 10-3, and Waite Hoyt takes the second game 2-1. This is the last regular season American League game at the Polo Grounds as the Yankees will open Yankee Stadium in 1923.

1923 - After leadoff hitter Whitey Witt reaches first on a controversial single, Boston pitcher Howard Ehmke retires the next 27 batters for a 3-0 win. Ehmke has now given up just one hit in his last two games.

1956 - Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds tied a rookie record for home runs in a season with his 38th homer of the year. The blow came off Steve Ridzik of the New York Giants and the Reds went on to an 11-5 victory.

1959 - The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4, ending reliever Roy Face's winning streak at twenty-two games. It was Face's only loss of the season as he finished with an 18-1 record.

1974 - It took the St. Louis Cardinals 25 innings - 7:04 - to beat the New York Mets. A record 202 batters went to the plate, as Felix Millan and John Milner had twelve appearances apiece.

1976 - Minnie Minoso comes to bat for the White Sox after a twelve-year hiatus. He goes hitless in his three at bats against Frank Tanana, but his appearance makes him one of a handful of Major League players to play in four decades. His at bat in 1980 will match him with Nick Altrock as a five-decade player.

1980 - In a 6-5 win over the Cubs, Montreal's Ron LeFlore steals his 91st base of the season and Rodney Scott steals his 58th, breaking the Major League-record for stolen bases by teammates in one season. Lou Brock and Bake McBride set the record with the 1974 Cardinals.
1985 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds became the career hit leader with his 4,192nd hit to break Ty Cobb's record. Rose lined a 2-1 pitch off San Diego pitcher Eric Show to left-center field for a single in the first inning. It was the 57th anniversary of Ty Cobb's last game in the majors.

1987 - New York Mets third baseman Howard Johnson, with thirty-four homers, became the first National League infielder to hit thirty home runs and steal thirty bases in the same season. Hey, thanks, Bum! I guess I picked the wrong time to go to the parts store. I thought I could get back before anything else came up. Good luck today!

                    Hey guys,

Anybody who uses this info should read StarDust Bum's threads every day. There is so much more valuable, useful info in there that I never finalize a pick until I've had time to read it.

Thanks for all the work Bum!
