    Daily Sports Roundup: September 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NFL kicks off its 2010 season, the PGA Tour plays the third of its FedExCup events, and the Cardinals begin a road series in Atlanta.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League begins its regular-season schedule on Thursday night at the Superdome in New Orleans, with the Saints playing host to the Vikings. Minnesota and New Orleans met at the Superdome in the NFC Championship Game last season, with the Saints pulling out a 31-28 overtime victory. Drew Brees went just 17-of-31 for 197 yards passing in that contest, but threw three TD strikes. Brett Favre, on the other hand, went 28-of-46 for 310 yards with a touchdown pass, but also threw a pair of costly interceptions. The oddsmakers like the Saints at home in the first game of the year, as they're pegged as the 5.5-point favorites. The total for the matchup is listed at 48 points.

As well, there are a pair of college football games on Thursday night, with Central Michigan at Temple (-7.5), and No. 22 Auburn (-2.5) at Mississippi State. The ranked Tigers picked up an easy 52-26 win over Arkansas State in their season opener last time out, with quarterback Cam Newton passing for 186 yards and three scores and also running for 171 yards and two scores. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, thumped Memphis 49-7 last week, as QB Tyler Russell threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

There are just six games on a light baseball schedule for Thursday, with the American League offering up the White Sox at Detroit and Texas at Toronto, and the National League featuring Cincinnati at Colorado, the Dodgers at Houston, San Francisco at San Diego, and St. Louis at Atlanta. The Cardinals will send Adam Wainwright (17-10, 2.34 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while the Braves counter with Jair Jurrjens (7-4, 4.10 ERA). Righthander Wainwright will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak on Thursday; he gave up five runs (two earned) over five innings of work against the Reds last time out. Righthander Jurrjens has picked up the win in each of his past two trips to the mound, blanking the Marlins on three hits in his seven innings of work last time out.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the PGA Tour begins its third FedExCup playoff tournament on Thursday, the BMW Championship at Cog Hill G&CC in Lemont, Illinois. Tiger Woods is the defending champion at this event, and the oddsmakers have him pegged at 11/2 odds to pull off the repeat; Woods sits 51st in the FedExCup standings and needs to climb into the Top 30 to make the field for THE TOUR Championship in two weeks. Steve Stricker is next at 12/1 odds, followed by Phil Mickelson at 14/1, and Jim Furyk at 18/1. Matt Kuchar, the current FedExCup points leader, is next at 22/1 odds, with Charley Hoffman – who won the Deutsche Bank Championship with a sizzling final round last week – set at 50/1.

Bettors’ best friend: Thursday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

New Orleans Saints opened as 4-point favorites with the total at 54. The Saints can now be found as high as -6 and the total is hovering around 48.5.

Toronto opened as a -125 favorite against the Texas Rangers but is now listed at -120.

      Weather to watch

      No current weather concerns.

      Who’s hot

Chicago White Sox are 7-1 in last eight road games.

Houston is 12-4 in its last 16 overall

      Who’s not

Cincinnati is 6-21 in its last 27 meetings in Colorado.

Texas is 1-9 in Lewis’ last 10 starts.

St. Louis is 4-10 in its last 14 overall.

Vikings are 2-6 against the spread in their last eight Week 1 games.

      Key stat

5- the number of consecutive meetings between the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints that have played over the posted total.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Florida Marlins starter Josh Johnson has been diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation and a mid-back strain. He will miss his scheduled start on Friday and will be re-evaluated over the next few days.

      Game of the day

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints

      Notable quotable

"They are the Super Bowl champs and they deserve that respect, but we beat ourselves in that game. We have a lot stuff to work on. We've got that bad taste in our mouth, and we need to brush our teeth."

-Vikings Visanthe Shiancoe tight end on last year’s loss to New Orleans in the NFC Championship game.

      Tips and notes

New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma is expected to play fully in Thursday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. Vilma is officially listed as probable after dealing with a groin issue for the last while.

Referee Terry McAualy and his crew plan to call a tight game between the Vikings and Saints after all the talk about Brett Favre getting beat up in last year’s NFC Championship game. But don’t expect them to bend over backwards for the Vikings. "They know what happened to Favre before and it's not that they're going to look to protect him any more or any less than they would under normal circumstances," Mike Pereira, the former director of NFL officials, told reporters.

Jorge Posada is listed as day-to-day after taking a foul tip to the mask on Tuesday. The Yankees were looking to use him as a pinch hitter on Wednesday, but decided against it after the catcher complained his head felt “foggy.”

        Thursday's six-pack

-- Apparently you can bet on what the Super Bowl matchup will be; Bills-Rams matchup is longest shot on board, at 9,600-1. The site we found this on is 5Dimes Sportsbook, Casino, Racebook, Poker Room and Lottery Room

-- Sales of NFL season tickets are down for the third year in a row.

-- Joe West did plate for 16-inning game in Anaheim, his fourth extra inning game in his last five behind the plate.

-- John Lindsey got into his first big league boxscore Wednesday, but never played; he was announced as pinch-hitter, then when Bud Black went to righty reliever, Andre Ethier hit for Lindsey.

-- Lindsey is first guy whose MLB debut was as PH who didn't bat in eight years, when Dave McKay's son Cody did it.

-- Awesome trivia: only one major leaguer has ever been ejected from a game without appearing in a game. 1951, Bill Sharman, Brooklyn, the same Bill Sharman who was a great basketball player and coached the Lakers and Utah Stars. One of the best free throw shooters ever.

        *********************************************

Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

        13) Danny Espinosa of the Nationals is first player in major league history to hit two HRs with 6+ RBI in one of his first five major league games; he comes from the strong Long Beach State college program.

        12) Seattle Seahawks have only 26 players back from Week 17 of LY, fewest of any NFL team. Pete Carroll turned over half the roster already and some of the remaining veterans are wondering whats up.

        11) In his last 17 games, Carlos Gonzalez is 32-60, with seven HRs, 21 RBI. Lets just say I'm trying to forget trading him off my fantasy team back when he was a rookie.

        10) Rule that ended Sunday’s Minnesota-Rangers game is still unclear; even umpires and Texas manager Washington seemed confused by it. The rule centers around if a runner touches the third base coach, is he automatically out, or does the coach have to aid the runner in order for interference to occur.

        9) Can’t remember the college hoop magazines coming out so early. Not a complaint, except that none of them have game schedules now.

        8) 49ers are travelling 35,219 miles this season, most in NFL; Bengals are travelling the least, 6,688 miles.

        7) Turkey holds its national elections on a Sunday. Good idea or not?

        6) Only four weeks until the NHL regular season starts.

        5) State of New Jersey still owes $110M on Giants Stadium, you know, the stadium that no longer exists. Good thing Mara and Tisch famililies extorted their loyal fanbase into building a new palace, or else their team might have been stuck playing in the 33-year old stadium that housed most of their franchise's greatest memories.

        4) Orioles are 21-14 under Buck Showalter; they were 32-73 before he started managing the team in early August.

        3) Illinois finished 103rd out of 120 college football teams in passing LY, but still had two rookie WRs and a TE make NFL rosters this summer. You have to ask yourself, either the QB or coach were really awful, no?

        2) Bucky Badger, the mascot for Wisconsin sports, had his head stolen recently; the thing weighs 28 pounds and costs $4,000. Quick work got the head recovered, just in time for football season.

        1) Drinking age in this country needs to be lowered to 18. If you’re old enough to fight in a war, you’re old enough to have a beer.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Texas at Toronto (+100, 9.5)

Thursday is a big day for Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Shawn Hill - it’s his first MLB start since April 2009. Hill is coming back from his second Tommy John surgery.

"It's special," Hill, who grew up in Georgetown, Ont., told reporters. "Aside from being in Toronto, which is a whole separate issue, coming back from a second Tommy John, it's been a rough two years battling injuries.

"It's special in that sense. Then, obviously, coming home to pitch in front of friends and family and getting to sleep at my parents' house."

Nothing like some home cooking before making your big comeback.

              Pick: Jays

St. Louis at Atlanta (-120, 7)

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright is getting pretty sick of losing. He has dropped four straight starts for the first time in his career. The 6-foot-7 right-hander gave up two runs on seven hits over five innings against the Cincinnati Reds in his last outing, striking out six while walking one.

"I don't like losing one game, much less four in a row," Wainwright told reporters after that game. "I won't lose again."

              Pick: Braves

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Rick Porcello (8-11, 5.20 ERA), Detroit Tigers

Porcello heads into Thursday’s start having allowed just five earned runs over his last three starts – spanning 21 innings. He won 6-4 at Kansas City in his last outing, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out five to stretch his winning streak to three.

Matt Cain (10-10, 3.18 ERA) San Francisco Giants

The 6-foot-3 right-hander has pitched the Giants to victory in each of his last three starts, though he picked no-decisions in two of those games. He has 20 strikeouts and a 3.80 ERA over that stretch.

              Slumping

Adam Wainwright (17-10, 2.34 ERA) St. Louis Cardinals

St. Louis’ big lefty is looking to put an end to a four-game losing streak, the longest losing streak of his career. He hasn’t been all that bad, giving up 13 runs over the skid while striking out 26, but he isn’t happy about it. Wainwright had won three straight before this losing streak took over.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              This Day in Baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 9 in Baseball History...

1914 - George Davis of the Boston Braves pitched a 7-0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.

1918 - In Game Four of the World Series, which is being played early because of World War I, Babe Ruth bats in two runs on a triple in the fourth and pitches seven scoreless innings before the Cubs tie it in the eighth. But Ruth and the Red Sox get the win when Phil Douglas throws away the game, first by a wild pitch, then an error.

1922 - Baby Doll Jacobson hit three triples to lead the St. Louis Browns to a 16-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1936 - The New York Yankees clinched their eighth American League pennant with a doubleheader sweep of the Cleveland Indians, 11-3 and 12-9. The Yankees finished 19 1/2-games ahead of the Detroit Tigers for the largest margin in Yankee history.

1945 - Dick Fowler of the Philadelphia Athletics pitched a 1-0 no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns.

1948 - Rex Barney of the Brooklyn Dodgers pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds.

1953 - Mickey Mantle's two-run home run off Chicago's Billy Pierce caps a seven-run fifth inning, as New York wins 9-3 at Yankee Stadium. Returning to center field after the fifth, Mantle is photographed blowing a huge bubble with a wad of gum. Manager Casey Stengel will publicly rebuke the Mick, who will apologize for the indiscretion. However, Mantle does get an endorsement fee from the Bowman Gum company.

1965 - Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitched his fourth no-hitter, a perfect game, against the Chicago Cubs. Koufax fanned 14 in the 1-0 victory while Cubs pitcher Bob Hendley allowed only one hit - a double by Lou Johnson.

1970 - Bowie Kuhn hands Denny McLain his third suspension of the year, this one is for carrying a gun, plus other unspecified charges, and ends McLain's season with a 3-5 record.

1977 - In the second game of a doubleheader in Boston, Tigers rookies Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell debut together. They will hold down the second base and shortstop jobs in Detroit for a record nineteen years.

1987 - Nolan Ryan struck out sixteen to pass 4,500 for his career as the Houston Astros beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2. Ryan struck twelve of the final thirteen batters and fanned Mike Aldrete to complete the seventh for his 4,500th strikeout.

1988 - Bruce Sutter joins Rollie Fingers and Rich Gossage as the third pitcher to save 300 games as Atlanta beats San Diego 5-4 in 11 innings. It is the last save of his career.

1990 - Oakland beats New York 7-3 to complete a twelve-game sweep of the Yankees this year. The season sweep is a first for the Yankees.

1992 - Robin Yount became the 17th player to reach 3,000 hits in the Milwaukee Brewers' 5-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Yount singled to right-center off Cleveland's Jose Mesa in the seventh inning.

1993 - Baseball joins the other major sports and expands the postseason as well as its divisions. The measure passes by a 27-1 vote with Texas, one of two teams other than the new expansion teams never to go to the postseason by the old setup, as the lone dissenter.

1997 - Mark McGwire becomes only the second player in history to hit fifty home runs in consecutive seasons (Babe Ruth did it twice) and the first to hit fifty in a season with two different teams. McGwire, who started the season with the A's, hits his 50th of the year for the Cardinals in a 7-6 loss to the Giants. In 1998 and 1999, McGwire will become the first player to hit fifty home runs three- and four-straight years.

1998 - The New York Yankees officially clinched the American League East title, the earliest in American League history, beating the Boston Red Sox 7-5. The Yankees improved to 102-41, 20 1/2-games ahead of second-place Boston.
