    Daily Sports Roundup: September 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Royals continue their road set against the Twins in Minnesota, and the Brewers play host to the Cards once again in Milwaukee.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Wednesday it'll be Baltimore at the Yankees, Cleveland at the Angels, the White Sox at Detroit, Texas at Toronto, Tampa Bay at Boston, Seattle at Oakland, and Kansas City at Minnesota. The Royals will send Zack Greinke (8-11, 3.87 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while the Twins counter with Brian Duensing (7-2, 2.09 ERA). Righthander Greinke picked up his third straight no-decision in his last trip to the mound, giving up four runs on six hits over his 6 1-3 innings of work against the Tigers. Lefthander Duensing beat the Royals back on July 28, surrendering only two runs on eight hits over six innings that day, while fanning two.

Meanwhile the National League on Wednesday has the Mets at Washington, Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Florida at Philadelphia, Houston at the Cubs, Cincinnati at Colorado, San Francisco at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Diego, and St. Louis at Milwaukee. Jaime Garcia (13-6, 2.35 ERA) is expected to take on Chris Capuano (2-3, 4.62 ERA) in that Cardinals/Brewers matchup. Lefthander Garcia has won three straight starts, but his last loss came on August 17 against the Brewers (three unearned runs over six innings of work). Lefthander Capuano was tagged with a loss by the Phillies in his most recent trip to the mound, giving up one run on four hits in his five innings, while striking out four.

Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

      Weather to watch

Mets at Nationals: There is an expected 15 mph wind blowing across the diamond from first toward third.

Orioles at Yankees: There is an expected 19 mph wind blowing across the diamond from first toward left center field.

Braves at Pirates: There is an expected 17 mph wind blowing across the diamond from first toward third.

White Sox at Tigers: There is an expected 21 mph wind blowing across the diamond from first toward third.

Marlins at Phillies: There is an expected 20 mph wind blowing out toward center field.

Astros at Cubs: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing across the diamond from third toward first.

Rays at Red Sox: There is an expected 20 mph wind blowing out toward left center field.

      Who’s hot

The Athletics are 7-3 in their past 10 home games.

The Rockies are 36-15 in their past 51 home games.

The over is 9-4 in the White Sox past 13 road games.

      Who’s not

The Mets are 2-7 in their past nine road games.

The under is 6-1-1 in the Cardinals past eight games overall.

The under is 9-4-1 in the Red Sox past 14 games overall.

      Key stat

6: Times this season that Tiger Woods has entered the final round of a tournament trailing by 10 or more shots, the most of any year of his career. Woods remains capable of putting together great rounds, but still has yet to string together strong days.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Anyone who was hoping that Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton was close to returning with an ailing left shoulder was devastated when they heard those three dreaded letters on Tuesday: MRI. With the team way out of the playoff chase, they may opt to shut down the 23-year-old slugger the rest of the season. The Diamondbacks, who have yet to get the results of the test, are a streak-hitting lineup and got even streakier if that MRI reveals any significant damage. Upton is hitting .275 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs in 488 at-bats with Arizona this season.

      Game of the Day

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-121)

      Notable quotes

"We think it will help the kids get their mind on something different at different points of time throughout the day. And we'll take it one day at a time. There's not a manual on how to do these things." -- Wyoming coach Dave Christensen on his team electing to keep its normal routine leading up to its game on Saturday against No. 5 Texas following the death of freshman linebacker Ruben Narcisse in an auto accident early on Monday morning.

      Tips and notes

Maybe the NFL finally listened to common sense regarding rules. In a memo sent to all 32 NFL teams, the umpire will now line up 12 yards from the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped instead of 15 yards, which was used during the preseason. Additionally, the head linesman or line judge now has the ability to signal when the ball can be snapped instead of forcing quarterbacks to check with referees. Also, the umpire must now only be lined up past the deepest running back and not his established position before a ball can be snapped. The previously revised system caused huge issues for no-huddle teams during the preseason. This still could be a huge issue for some no huddle teams, however, as there remain kinks to be worked out, especially if a team like the Colts is playing in a tight game in Week 1.

Don’t be surprised if the USA-Russia basketball game on Wednesday at the FIBA World Championships is much closer than the line indicates. America enters the contest as +22.5 favorites, a number that seems logical the way the United States has pasted nearly everyone thus far in the tournament. However, Russia employs a tricky zone defense that could stifle an American offense that has thus far been solid but not spectacular from 3-point range. Even more concerning is the Russian front line has an average advantage of three inches on the Americans, making them the tallest team the U.S. will face thus far. Add in the fact that Russia runs a version of the Princeton offense, and if the Europeans slow down the pace, the Americans could be in for a long afternoon.

Pay close attention to the UNLV-Utah line. The Rebels, who covered a three-touchdown spread last week against Wisconsin, find themselves as 23.5-point dogs for their trip to face the Utes on the road this Saturday. But their chances of an upset may take a turn for the better with this news: Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn is day-to-day with a bruised thumb he hurt in a 27-24 OT win against then-No. 15 Pittsburgh. Wynn, who finished with 238 passing yards and three aerial touchdowns likely will be a game-time decision.

        Wednesday's six-pack

-- Freddy Sanchez' HR in Arizona Tuesday was first in his career that went over RF fence. He did have an inside-the-park HR to rightfield a few years back, but had never hit one over fence to the opposite field.

-- Heath Bell got the third 5-out save of his career Tuesday, saving the win for Mat Latos, as San Diego stayed a game ahead of the Giants by beating the Dodgers 2-1 at Petco.

-- There have been 15 no-hitters or one-hitters this year; there were a combined total of 14 the last two seasons.

-- Derek Jeter is now 6-for-50 (.120) when batting 2nd; why doesn't Girardi drop him in the order? Afraid of ruffling feathers?

-- Phillies took over first place when they won and Braves lost 5-0 in Pittsburgh; Bucs scored five in bottom of 7th for that upset win.

-- Congrats to Trevor Hoffman on his 600th career save. Well done.

        ********************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) When was the last time an NFL opening weekend didn’t have a pointspread higher than 7 points? Funny thing is that the Giants are the biggest favorite (-7) in Week 1 and they're playing a Carolina team that crushed them 41-9 in the playoffs eight months ago.

Last two seasons, nine of 32 Week 1 games had spreads higher than 7- over last ten years, 23 games had spreads higher than 7, with underdogs 14-9 vs spread in those games.

        12) Its about damn time: Rumors have the Patriots and Tom Brady close to a 3-year, $58M contract extension. Without Brady, Patriots are still playing in Schaefer Stadium.

        11) Hunter Mahan (2-0-3) is only player on US Ryder Cup team with a winning record in Ryder Cup matches. Six of the 12 guys have no wins in RC. Mickelson is 10-14-6, Eldrick Woods is 10-13-2 in RC play.

        10) I'm thinking Charlie Hoffman wasn't even considered for Ryder Cup team, since a final round 62 Monday didn't get him on the squad. Choice of Rickie Fowler (no career wins) was a little curious. Interesting to see if they'll use him or not in Wales.

        9) Funny thing about Hoffman: he's second in FedEx Cup standings but wasn't in any of the four majors this year. By winning Monday, he has already qualified for all four majors next season.

        8) I'm confused; does the school or the player keep the Heisman Trophy or do both get one? If I'm Reggie Bush, no way do I give it back.

        7) So former Alabama coach Gene Stallings thinks Boise State would go 3-5 in the SEC......tough argument, because if Boise was an SEC team, it would allow them to recruit a much higher level of athlete. From looks of things, they're doing pretty darn well doing that they're doing. If they had even better athletes, they could be an elite program anywhere.

        6) Mets have allowed 11 grand slams this year. They haven't hit one. Mets are also 2-17 in the game following their last 19 wins.

        5) ESPN (1979) and Pro Football Hall of Fame (1963) were founded on September 7, so I'm older than both. For first time, I'm also older than the President. Its one thing to be older than a cable TV station, but when you're older than a museum (thats basically what the Hall of Fame is) it gets your attention. Pro Football Hall of Fame is terrific, by the way.

        4) Rutgers basketball has already signed four players from Class of '11, with three of the four top 100 recruits. As a state university, Rutgers is a sleeping giant in hoops. Sounds like they're going to wake up soon.

        3) Think the Texas Rangers expected to be 3-8 in Cliff Lee's first eleven starts? Well, they are, and now Lee has a bad back.

        2) Good name for a pitcher: Wade LeBlanc.
Bad names for a pitcher: Homer Bailey and Grant Balfour.

        1) Seriously, how much money would a 16-team college football playoff make? It would be off the charts. Plus, it might lessen the importance of the regular season, it would also make September a lot better month, due to teams having to play better opponents to help their power rating.

              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Brett Myers, Houston Astros (10-7, 3.02 ERA)

Few pitchers have been as consistently good as the hard-throwing right-hander.

Myers has notched a quality start in 11 of his past 12 outings as opponents are batting a meager .249 against him this season. The former Phillies star has succeed by adapting his approach to whatever lineup he is facing. Over his past six starts, he has had more ground ball outs six times, more fly ball outs three times and the same number once.

And just as vital is the fact he likes to handle his own business, ranking sixth in the National League in innings pitched by lasting 191 frames.

Against the Cubs who he faces on Wednesday, Myers is 2-0 through three starts, posting a 1.59 ERA and a 26-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (9-10, 3.18 ERA)

The 26-year-old South Paw has been dynamite for the Phillies, despite his record being affected by poor run support.

The past three times Hamels has toed the rubber, he has allowed only two earned runs over 22 innings, including shutting out the opposition his two most recent outings. Over this dominant stretch, he has given up only 12 hits and only one home run and walked just four against 21 strikeouts.

"When you know that every pitch means something and you're able to still keep a good frame of mind and battle, you're not going to mess up as easy," Hamels told the Associated Press. "You understand that that one pitch is the game."

              Slumping

              Derek Holland (2-3, 4.93 ERA)

The 23-year-old left-hander has helped the Rangers by being a patch on their wounded rotation. But he has pitched more like a scrub than a band-aid.

Holland has yielded 10 earned runs over his past three starts, lasting only 15.1 innings and making his way out of the fifth only once. In just 34.2 innings this year, he has allowed 19 earned runs on 34 hits, including six home runs.

Making matters worse, he starts on the road against Toronto on Wednesday. Away from his own ballpark this season, he is 0-3 with a 9.24 ERA.

              Derek Lowe (11-12, 4.53 ERA)

A 37-year-old with a sore elbow that has been bothering him for more than a month this late in the season? Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Lowe has picked up an “L” three of the past four times he has taken the mound, seeing his ERA rise in each of his past three outings. Over that span, he has yielded 12 earned runs over just 16 innings.

What makes things worse is the way he has yielded the runs: the last three times he took the mound he has given up 19 hits, including four home runs, and walked five.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Washington Nationals (-108, 8)

No team in baseball is swinging a hotter bat than the boys from the District of Columbia.

Over the past seven days – a span of six games – the Nats have scored an MLB-best 45 runs – three more than the next closest team, and are batting a Major League-leading .307 over that stretch, including an OBP of .384 that also is tops in the bigs.

The team has been gearing up for this stretch to getting hot for short stretches, scoring at least nine runs in one game of each of its past four series.

And that’s not good for the Mets. New York has a road ERA of 4.46 for the season and has been even worse over its past eight away games, yielding an average of 6.75 runs per outing.

"It's like anything else," Nationals hitting coach Rick Eckstein told the Washington Post. "You go about your day. You work hard. You plan, and you have a plan. When it works and it executes, everything is great. When you're not getting that key hit, when you're not doing that, it goes back to evaluating what adjustments you need to make. Sometimes, you've got to say, 'Nope, we've got the right plan. We've just got to keep plugging away.' The guys have done a nice job to battle and be real tough at the plate and execute."

              Pick: Nationals.

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels (-145)

To put it simply, the Angels have waived the white flag.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles purchased the contracts of prospects Mark Trumbo and Hank Conger and recalled right-handers Matt Palmer and Bobby Cassevah and third baseman Kevin Frandsen from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Palmer, Cassevah and Frandsen all have seen time up in the Show this season, but none of them did enough to stick. Meantime, it will be a chance for Trumbo, a 24-year-old first baseman, who is hitting .301 with 36 homers and 122 RBI and Conger, a 22-year-old catcher, who is hitting .300 with 11 homers and 49 RBI, to earn a regular spot for next season.

"They're all players that we know can help us and fill out our depth chart," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told ESPNLosAngeles.com. "We'll see where they can fit in and if they can get a chance to get the feel of contributing in a big league environment. We're excited about some of the guys coming up, but we still have a group in there that we're going to move forward with."

Overall, the Angels are 3-7 in their past 10, six games under .500 and 9.5 games out of the first in the American League West. Good luck, rookies.

              Pick: Indians.

              This Day in Baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 8 in Baseball History...

1880 - The Polo Grounds in New York is leased by the new National Association Metropolitan club. The grounds, which have been used for polo matches, will be converted into the first commercial baseball park to be built on Manhattan Island. It opens three weeks later.

1905 - The Pittsburgh Pirates stranded eighteen runners in an 8-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds to set a National League record for men left on base.

1916 - Wally Schang of the A's homers from both sides of the plate against the Yankees. Only a handful of people see the rare feat on a rainy day.

1939 - Twenty-year-old Bob Feller becomes the youngest 20th-century pitcher to win twenty games, as Cleveland beats St. Louis 12-1.

1955 - The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Braves, 10-2, to clinch the National League pennant with a seventeen-game lead.

1958 - Roberto Clemente tied a Major League record by hitting three triples in a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

1963 - Braves pitcher Warren Spahn ties Christy Mathewson with his thirteenth 20-win season by notching a 3-2 victory in Philadelphia. At forty-two, Spahn becomes the oldest twenty-game winner.

1965 - Bert Campaneris of the Kansas City A's played all nine positions before having to leave after a ninth-inning collision with Ed Kirkpatrick of the Angels. The Angels won, 5-3, in 13 innings.

1972 - Fergie Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-3, for his 20th victory of the season. It was the sixth straight year that Jenkins won at least twenty games.

1980 - Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspendsFergie Jenkins indefinitely as a result of his August 25 drug arrest in Toronto. On September 22, the suspension will be overturned by arbitrator Raymond Goetz, the first time ever a commissioner's decision is overruled by an arbitrator.

1985 - Cincinnati's Pete Rose inserted himself into the lineup when the Chicago Cubs started right-hander Reggie Patterson. Rose singled in the first inning and again in the fifth inning to tie Ty Cobb with 4,191 career hits. Rose was retired in his other at-bats and the game was called because of darkness after nine innings with the score tied, 5-5.

1988 - National League president Bart Giamatti is unanimously elected baseball's seventh commissioner, and will succeed Peter Ueberroth in 1989.

1993 - Darryl Kile pitched baseball's second no-hitter in five days as the Houston Astros beat the New York Mets, 7-1.

1995 - Cleveland ends a postseason drought of forty-one years by clinching the American League Central Division with a 3-2 win over the Orioles.

1996 - Todd Hundley of the New York Mets became the ninth player to hit forty home runs during the season, breaking the Major League record set in 1961. Hundley's homer, in a 6-2 win over Atlanta, tied Roy Campanella's Major League record for homers by a catcher.

1998 - Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris' thirty-seven year-old home run record, lining historic No. 62 just over the wall in left field with two out in the fourth inning. McGwire's homer off the Chicago Cubs' Steve Trachsel set off a wild celebration in Busch Stadium.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Washington Nationals [12:35 PM ET]

METS: New York is clearly looking towards the offseason, as this team simply isn't putting forth the effort necessary to win consistently. The Mets have lost 7 of their past 10 games overall, and stand 67-71 SU on the year. New York is in 2nd to last place in the NL East, and could conceivably come in last place to their opponent today. New York is -6.01 and +14.51 units both SU and on the RL this season. The Mets biggest bright spot will take the mound tonight, pitcher R.A. Dickey. Dickey is 9-6 this year, with an ERA of 2.91 and a WHIP of 1.18. The Mets are 7-18 in their last 25 road games against a right-handed starter. New York is 6-21 in their last 27 Wednesday games overall. The Mets are 1-5 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Mets are 5-2 in Dickey's last 7 starts during game 3 of a series. New York is 1-4 in Dickey's last 5 road starts against a team with a losing record.

Mets are 1-6 last 7 games against the National League East.
Under is 10-4 last 14 games against a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - SS Jose Reyes (oblique) is questionable.

                  Projected Score: 5

NATIONALS: (-120, O/U 8) Washington is in the midst of one of their finest offensive weeks ever. The Nationals have scored at least 8 runs in 4 of their past 5 games, and it doesn't look like they plan on slowing down anytime soon. While they are out of the playoff picture with a season record of 60-78 SU, the Nationals are playing scrappy and remaining competitive. Washington is -4.93 and -1.34 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Veteran Livan Hernandez will make the home start tonight, looking to rebound from some recent poor starts. Hernandez is 9-10 with an ERA of 3.81 and a WHIP of 1.34 this season. The Nationals are 4-0 in their last 4 home games against a right-handed starter. Washington is 4-10 in their last 14 games against the National League East. The Nationals are 0-4 in their last 4 Wednesday games overall. The Nationals are 10-2 in Hernandez's last 12 home starts against a team with a losing record. Washington is 1-4 in Hernandez's last 5 home starts. The Nationals are 0-4 in Hernandez's last 4 starts against the National League East.

Nationals are 9-3 last 12 home games against a team with a road winning percentage less than .400%.
Over is 11-3 last 14 home games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - LF Willie Harris (head) is questionable.

Projected Score: 6 (OVER-Total of the Day)

Cincinnati Reds at Colorado Rockies [8:40 PM ET]

REDS: Very quietly, the Reds have opened up the 2nd largest division lead in all of baseball. Cincinnati is 79-58 SU this year, placing them 6 games ahead of St. Louis in the National League Central division. The Reds are playing with confidence and poise, a rare feat for this team considering how new the pennant chase pressure is to them. Cincinnati has been impressive on the road this year, going 38-31 SU this year. The Reds are +19.44 and +18.80 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Veteran Bronson Arroyo will make the road start tonight, as he is 14-9 with an ERA of 3.84 and a WHIP of 1.15 this season. The Reds are 5-1 in their last 6 Wednesday games. Cincinnati is 17-8 in their last 25 games against a right-handed starter. The Reds are 43-21 in their last 64 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Reds are 4-0 in Arroyo's last 4 starts against National League West. Cincinnati is 7-2 in Arroyo's last 9 road starts overall. The Reds are 5-2 in Arroyo's last 7 starts against a team with a winning record. Cincinnati is 7-3 in Arroyo's last 10 starts during game 3 of a series.

Reds are 6-1 last 7 games during game 3 of a series.
Over is 5-0-1 last 6 games against the National League West.

Key Injuries - RF Jay Bruce (back) is questionable.

Projected Score: 5 (SIDE of the Day)

ROCKIES: (-125, O/U 9) Colorado has won their past 3 games, and combined with the Padres recent slide, they are now within 4.5 games of the National League West division lead. It seems like a yearly occurrence that the Rockies come from far back to make the playoffs. Colorado is playing some of their most consistent baseball right now, both on offense and with regards to their pitching staff. Offensively, Colorado has scored 6 runs in more in 3 of their past 5 games. The Rockies pitching staff has allowed 3 runs or fewer in 5 of their previous 8 games. The Rockies are -2.32 and +6.70 units both SU and on the RL this season. Aaron Cook will make the home start tonight, as he is 5-8 with an ERA of 5.18 and a WHIP of 1.56 this season. Five MLB betting trends to ride in September

As the baseball season winds down, it’s easy to fall in love with the season-long numbers.

But over the course of a 162-game campaign, things can change. A few struggling teams manage to turn things around down the stretch, while several contending squads wilt in the heat of the playoff race.

Then again, some things don’t change, like the ineptitude of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Here’s a look at five profitable wagering strategies since the beginning of August – three that might surprise you and two that probably shouldn’t.

                              Backing the Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore's second managerial change of the 2010 season paid off bigtime for Orioles backers. Since bringing in Buck Showalter, the birds have gone 19-15 - a drastic improvement from the 32-73 record they had under Dave Trembley and Juan Samuel.

If that looks impressive, just consider that the O's have been underdogs in all but four of those games, cashing as dogs of +150 or higher eight times.

Improved pitching and defense have been the keys to the Orioles' resurgence. Baltimore allowed 5.94 runs per game in June and July, but has cut that allowance down to 4.24 runs per game since August 1. The team has gone under the total in 21 of 34 games as well.

                              Fading the St. Louis Cardinals

St. Louis was leading the NL Central when the calendar flipped from July to August. Now, the Cards are a longshot to even make the postseason, trailing the Reds by six games in the division and five games behind the Phillies for the wildcard. St. Louis is 13-17 in its 30 games since August 1 and 6-14 in its last 20.

Cardinals faders have enjoyed the ride. St. Louis was favored in 27 of its last 30 games, falling as faves of -200 or higher on four occasions.

                              Backing the Houston Astros

Dealing longtime ace Roy Oswalt and struggling slugger Lance Berkman at the trade deadline might actually have lit a spark under the Astros. Houston is a sizzling 20-13 since the beginning of August and a .500 season (a pipe dream two months ago) is now looking like a possibility.

J.A. Happ, acquired from the Phillies in the Oswalt trade, has allowed three runs or less in seven of eight starts in a Houston uniform. Wandy Rodriguez has also turned things around after a brutal start to the year and Brett Myers continues to be one of the most underrated hurlers in the game.

                              Fading the Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates are a pretty safe team to fade at the best of times, but they've been especially horrible over the past six weeks. Pittsburgh is 9-24 in its last 33 contests as it stumbles towards the worst record in the league.

The Pirates have won one (yes, one) road game since July 28. If you're not interested in laying the big chalk to bet against the Pirates on the road, think about giving the runline a shot. Even when catching 1.5 runs, Pittsburgh is 2-13 against the spread in its last 15 games away from home.

Betting the Seattle Mariners under the total

The Mariners' offense has been so bad this season, rumor has it that players are even having trouble scoring with their own wives. Seattle has been limited to three runs or less in 14 of its past 15 games. The one exception was August 25 at Boston, when the Mariners exploded for four.

An impotent offense and a solid pitching staff is an excellent formula for an under ticket, and Seattle has cashed those with great regularity. The Mariners have gone over the total in only 12 of 33 games since the beginning of August.
