both plays 1*
I opened with a bad beat last week (Northwestern) and a bad pick (Florida).
2* Texas A & M -19
A & M's offense was excellent last year with a great QB and this year the defense is better. It was inevitable that Mike Sherman, an excellent NFL coach, would be a winner in the Big 12 and this is the breakout year. Louisiana Tech has a new coach this year and struggled against inferior Grambling last week. A & M will be motivatded because they only played Stephen F. Austin last week, have Flor Int and a bye after this one.
1* South Florida +15
Skip Holtz, like his father, is an upset specialist and has a great defense at South Florida. Florida's offense was putrid last week against Miami-OH.
1* Baylor -16 1/2
Tough spot for Buffalo and its new coaching staff which is moving away from ex-coach Gill's option run game. Baylor has an exciting QB in Griffin and the defense is the best since Briles got here.
1* San Diego State -13
Big angle here: New Mex State didn't play last week and is at a huge disadvantage vs. an opponent with a win under its belt. SD State has a solid defense and New Mex State an atrocious offense.
1* Southern Cal -19 1/2
I almost made this one a 2*. USC's offense looked great against Hawaii and Barkley's a lot better in his second year. USC's D played poorly but Hawaii has a creative offense with lots of skill players. Virginia has no offense at all. This is actually a possible letdown for Virginia as its new coach came from Richmond, the team Virginia beat last week.
Opinions only:
Eastern Michigan
UCLA
NFL (playing these two now as lines may move against me; will write up later)
1* Jaguars -2 1/2
1* Texans +2 (strongest technical angle in NFL here: Super Bowl losers have lost ATS in week one ten years in a row!)
