Bettors’ best friend: Tuesday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres – Padres opened at -140 but can be found at -125 at some books.

    Weather to watch

Chicago White Sox at Detroit – 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms, 27 mph winds.

    Who’s hot

Atlanta is 7-2 in Tim Hudson’s last nine starts.
Chicago White Sox are 14-3 in Freddy Garcia’s last 17 starts.
Texas is 11-4 in last 15 Tuesday games.
Cincinnati is 15-6 in its last 21 overall.
San Francisco is 20-8 in its last 28 meetings with Arizona.

    Who’s not

New York Mets are 3-9 in last 11 games in Washington.
Baltimore is 15-39 in last 54 meetings with New York Yankees.
Boston is 2-6 in its last eight overall.
Chicago Cubs are 6-14 in last 20 home games.
St. Louis is 3-9 in its last 12 overall.
Kansas City is 2-7 in last nine meetings in Minnesota.
Seattle is 21-48 in its last 69 road games.
Cleveland is 2-6 in its last eight meetings with Los Angeles Dodgers.

    Key stat

8-for-15 – Washington’s Danny Espinosa’s record at the plate over his first five MLB games. He has three homers, two doubles, and 10 RBIs so far.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Josh Hamilton – Texas’ slugger doesn’t expect to be back in the lineup anytime soon after bruising his ribs Saturday afternoon when he crashed into the Target Field outfield wall as he made a catch in the third inning. Hamilton could miss more than a week of action.

    Game of the day

    Cincinnati Reds at Colorado Rockies.

    Notable quotable

“Every so often it's better for a player to observe than participate. I thought he really should watch a game or so and sit with some very smart people on my staff and kind of keep an eye on things and maybe reflect a little bit. He's had so much thrown at him, but I think sometimes step.”

-Cubs manager Mike Quade after deciding to bench Starlin Castro Monday after his young shortstop forgot how many outs there were in the seventh inning of Sunday’s loss. Castro grounded into a double play to end the inning, thinking there were two outs instead of one.

    Tips and notes

Cliff Lee will miss his scheduled start on Tuesday with a back injury. He may come in later in the rotation schedule or have his start skipped entirely. Justin Masterson will take his spot on Tuesday.

The New York Mets will sit Johan Santana instead of letting him make his scheduled start on Tuesday. Santana has a strained pectoral muscle but the team admits he would have made the start if New York was in the playoff picture.

      Tuesday, September 7

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers (-160, 8)

The Chicago White Sox are doing their best to catch the Minnesota Twins, who lead the AL Central by 3 ½ games. Chicago has won seven straight games on its current road trip heading into Tuesday’s game.

They could get a big part of their lineup back in action too, as Paul Konerko gets ready to return after leaving Sunday’s game with a stiff back. Konerko is hitting .318 with 33 home runs and 98 RBIs.

"My thoughts are to play [Tuesday] unless I walk in here and something tells me otherwise," Konerko told reporters Monday. "That's my goal. But if for some reason it wasn't tomorrow, it would be the next day. I'm shooting for tomorrow for sure."

      Pick: White Sox

      Cincinnati at Colorado (-130, 9)

Are the Cincinnati Reds finally cooling down? With Monday’s loss to Colorado, the Reds have now dropped three of their last four games after a pulling off a crazy run that has them at the top of the NL Central.

Johnny Cueto is just the man to get Cincinnati back on the right track. He has allowed only two runs over his last two outings while striking out 10 and walking one over 14 innings. Cueto left the team to tend to a family emergency in the Dominican Republic but was expected to rejoin the team on Monday.

      Pick: Reds

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Francisco Liriano (12-7, 3.29 ERA), Minnesota Twins

This lefty is pitching like he’s ready for October baseball. He carries a 2.15 ERA over his last eight starts into Tuesday’s game. And forget about taking the ace yard. Liriano has given up just one homer in his last 112 1/3 innings pitched.

The Twins are also 8-1 in Liriano’s last nine appearances.

Barry Enright (6-2, 2.45 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

You’ve got to look at the positives when you’re having a crap season like the Diamondbacks are having. Barry Enright’s half-season performance is one good thing Arizona backers should remember going into next season.

The D-backs are 5-1 in the young righty’s last six starts and the under is 7-3 in his last 10 appearaances.

      Slumping

Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-4, 4.29 ERA), Boston Red Sox

Much ado about nothing. That’s pretty much how most would describe Dice-K’s big league career so far. He consistently disappoints when Boston needs a big game and he refuses to just get the ball over the plate against scrub hitters.

Matsuzaka has surrendered four runs in five of his last six starts and the over is 4-0 in his last four trips to the mound.

Kevin Correia (10-10, 5.52), San Diego Padres

Things are going well for San Diego backers. Kevin Correia is not the type of hurler you want to be sending to the hill when your club is struggling.

The 30-year-old righthander is 0-3 with a 15.00 ERA over his last three starts. The over is also 5-0 in his last five outings.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 7 in Baseball History...

1889 - The most controversial game in American Association history is held in Brooklyn. The St. Louis Browns hold a 4-2 lead in the ninth over the Bridegrooms and claim it is too dark to continue. The lighted candles in front of their bench make umpire Fred Goldsmith determined to finish the game no matter what. Several St. Louis players are hit with bottles as they leave the grounds. The Browns will forfeit the game the next day because they fear for their safety.

1908 - Walter Johnson pitched his third consecutive shutout in four days, a 4-0, two-hitter over the New York Highlanders.

1911 - Rookie Grover Alexander of the Philadelphia Phillies beat 44-year-old Cy Young 1-0, as Young ended his career with the Boston Braves.

1912 - Eddie Collins steals six bases in the Athletics' 9-7 win over Detroit, a 20th-century-record. Remarkably, on September 22, he will repeat with six against the Browns.

1916 - The New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-1 to start their 26-game winning streak, a Major League record.

1918 - On one day's rest, Hippo Vaughn gives up only seven hits, but Carl Mays wins a 2-1 duel for the Red Sox. Game Three of the World Series ends with the Charlie Pick of the Cubs caught in a rundown between third base and home while trying to score on a passed ball.

1945 - Joe Kuhel hits an inside-the-park home run, the only homer hit by a Senator all season at Washington's Griffith Stadium. The Nats hit twenty-six on the road.

1952 - Johnny Mize hits a pinch-hit grand slam to give the Yanks a 5-1 win at Washington. He has now homered in each one of the fifteen Major League parks, including Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, while in each league.

1953 - Roy Campanella sets the Major League record for RBI by a catcher when he smacks a three-run home run in a 6-3 Dodgers win over the Phils. Campy's 125 breaks Yogi Berra's Major League record of 124 set in 1950, and he will finish the season with 142. Yesterday Roy broke Gabby Hartnett's record for home runs by a catcher in a season with his 38th.

1955 - Whitey Ford continues his mastery with his second consecutive one-hitter, beating the A's 2-1. Jim Finigan hits a two-out single in the seventh for the Nats' only hit. The Yankees southpaw is the fifth Major League pitcher to throw consecutive one-hitters.

1962 - Maury Wills of Los Angeles stole four bases, setting a National League record with a total of 82 for the season. The Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1.

1970 - The White Sox use a Major League record 41 players in a doubleheader with Oakland, but lose both games, 7-4, and 7-5.

1975 - The Reds clinch the National League West flag with an 8-4 win over the Giants. It is the earliest clinching date in league history.

1978 - The Yankees, four games behind the Red Sox in the American League East, arrive in Boston for a crucial four-game series. The Yanks begin the "Boston Massacre" with a 15-3 rout.

1984 - Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets struck out Ron Cey of the Chicago Cubs in the second inning - his 228th of the season setting a National League record for a rookie. Gooden passed Grover Alexander, who set the mark with 227 in 1911. New York won 10-0 behind Gooden's one-hitter.

1993 - Mark Whiten of the St. Louis Cardinals had one of the greatest offensive games in Major League history in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Cincinnati. In the 15-2 win, Whiten hit four home runs and drove in twelve runs, becoming the only player ever to accomplish both feats in one game.

1998 - Ken Griffey, Jr. homered twice against Baltimore, giving baseball three 50-homer players in a season for the first time. Jr. joined Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth as the only players to hit fifty or more in consecutive seasons.

1998 - Mark McGwire, who had become the third player in history to reach 60 home runs, hits his record-tying 61st against Cubs pitcher Mike Morgan. McGwire's pursuer in the home run chase, Cubs right fielder Sammy Sosa, applauds McGwire, as does the adoring sold-out crowd in St. Louis.

            Daily Sports Roundup: September 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees play host to the Orioles, the Giants take on the D-Backs, and the WNBA's Eastern Conference Finals continue in Atlanta.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has the White Sox at Detroit, Texas at Toronto, Tampa Bay at Boston, Kansas City at Minnesota, Seattle at Oakland, Cleveland at the Angels, and Baltimore at the Yankees. The Orioles' Jake Arrieta (4-6, 5.11 ERA) is slated to take on New York's CC Sabathia (19-5, 3.02 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Arrieta took a no-decision against the Red Sox last time out, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings of work. Lefthander Sabathia will be looking to pick up his seventh consecutive victory on Tuesday; Sabathia dominated the Athletics in his last trip to the mound, tossing eight shutout innings and giving up one hit.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it's then Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Florida at Philadelphia, the Mets at Washington, Houston at the Cubs, St. Louis at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Colorado, the Dodgers at San Diego, and San Francisco at Arizona. Tim Lincecum (12-9, 3.68 ERA) will take on Barry Enright (6-2, 2.45 ERA) in the Giants/Diamondbacks contest. Righthander Lincecum finally got back into the win column last time out, holding the Rockies to one run on five hits over eight innings of work. Righthander Enright has won three straight starts, beating the Padres in his last trip to the mound (two runs over seven innings). Arizona is 5-1 in Enright's last six starts.

            Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, it'll be New York at Atlanta in Game 2 of the WNBA's best-of-three Eastern Conference Finals on Tuesday night. Atlanta came out on top in Game 1 of the series on Sunday night, winning 81-75 on the road in New York as a 4.5-point underdog. Angel McCoughtry led the way with 21 points for the Dream in that win, while Sancho Lyttle picked up 18 points and 13 rebounds. Cappie Pondexter led the Liberty with 24 points.

              Tuesday's six-pack

-- Mat Latos was ill Monday, so Saratoga's Tim Stauffer filled in for him; he allowed one run in four IP, and San Diego got a desperately needed 4-2 win over the Dodgers.

-- Texas is 3-7 and fading fast, with Lee-Hamilton-Kinsler all injured; A's crept within seven games Monday, but not sure A's can hit ball well enough to make a run in the next four weeks.

-- White Sox moved within six games of Tampa Bay in Wild Card race.

-- Since All-Star break, Mets are 2-17 in the game following a win.

-- Dodgers are picture of mediocrity; they're 69-69. LA has scored 589 runs, given up 589 runs. At least they're happier without Manny.

-- NL playoff race is getting very interesting; Phillies trail Braves by a half-game in NL East, lead Giants by 1.5 games in Wild Card race.

              ***********************************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

              13) ESPN.com reports that in 2005, there were 100 companies that made stuff with a Boise State logo on it. Five years later? There are 350 now. Thats what winning does for you.

              12) I love writing this website, but this is how far behind I am in movie watching; saw movie called John Q Sunday night. Excellent movie, with Denzel Washington, Robert Duvall, James Woods. Great cast, am very disappointed I hadn't seen it before. Then I check and find out John Q came out in 2002. Wow. Anyway, its a great movie. Liked it a lot.

              11) The guy who plays Turtle in Entourage is in John Q also; he plays a young doctor in the ER.

              10) Final tally for Darrelle Revis' fines for missing training camp wound up at $578,305. Somehow, I don't think he'll have to pay any of it. Just so I get this out of the way early this season, is there any doubt that Rex Ryan has a career as a wrestling manager after he quits coaching?

              9) Not only did Jacksonville State rally from 31-10 halftime deficit to upset Ole Miss in OT Saturday, they took home a check for $300,000, which is usually given to teams who are scheduled because they have no chance of beating the home team. Whoops.

              8) Brent Musberger was saying Monday night how some kid in Boise game had been Mr Football in Indiana; thats kind of like winning a Top Chef competition in Ethiopia or Somalia. Hoosiers ain't a football movie, people. Indiana is a basketball state, for sure.

              7) So I use Zach Johnson in our golf pool this week, and he comes out and shoots 63 in first round. Super. Then he doesn't break par the rest of the weekend. Not so good. How does that happen? Is it just putting?

              6) This Lane Kiffin must be something; when he bolted Tennessee to go to USC, he never told David Reaves, one of his assistant coaches. Dude found out sitting in a restaurant in Atlanta. Why am I mentioning this? Reaves happens to be Lane Kiffin's brother-in-law. What a guy.

              5) How is Nyjer Morgan still playing? Guy has been suspended for 15 games total, but he's appealing and is still playing. How? Baseball is so backwards on some things. This is freakin' 2010; there is technology to do an appeal the next day. How has this not been addressed?

              4) If ESPN does a school for sideline reporters, they better show clips of the lovely Heather Cox; she asks good questions quickly, she doesn't ask anything stupid and she gets the subject on his way. Can't ask for more.

              3) Rams' RB Steven Jackson tried to get TJ Houshmendzadeh, one of his college teammates at Oregon State, to sign with St Louis, but he signed with the Ravens instead. Baltimore then traded WR Mark Clayton to the Rams. Either way, Pete Carroll did St Louis a favor this weekend.

              2) Pretty good college game in Baltimore Monday, with Maryland Terps holding off Navy 17-14. Middies had ball in Maryland red zone seven times Monday, but scored only two TDs, getting stopped at the 1-yard line on three different drives. Lack of a solid kicking game hurts Navy.

              1) Boise State is good theater, man. Not only do they win, they play an exciting style of ball, and they have supreme confidence. How cool will it be if a team from freakin' Idaho wins the national championship?

However, Tampa has a firm grasp on the AL Wild-Card, as they lead by 6.5 games. The Rays have been so inconsistent both at home and on the road this year, it appears unlikely they will lose this lead. Tampa is 83-53 SU this year, including 40-27 SU on the road. The Rays are +7.45 and -2.80 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Ace lefty David Price will take the mound today, as he is 16-6 with an ERA of 2.92 and a WHIP of 1.24 this season. The Rays are 5-1 in their last 6 Tuesday games overall. The Rays are 4-1 in their last 5 road games against a team with a winning home record. Tampa is 21-7 in their last 28 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Rays are 2-6 in their last 8 road games against a right-handed starter. Tampa is 16-4 in Price's last 20 starts against the American League East. The Rays are 20-7 in Price's last 27 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Rays are 11-4 in Price's last 15 road starts. Tampa is 5-2 in Price's last 7 road starts against a team with a winning record.

Rays are 8-2 last 10 games against a team with a winning record.

Projected Score: 5 (SIDE of the Day)

RED SOX: It finally appears that all of the injuries the Red Sox have sustained have caught up with them. Despite a valiant fight, their current 3 game losing streak has all but ended the playoffs hopes of Boston. The Red Sox are 76-61 SU this year, 7.5 games behind Tampa Bay in their race for the playoffs. Boston is -2.06 and -2.77 units both SU and on the RL overall this season. Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka will make the home start tonight, as he is 9-4 with an ERA of 4.29 and a WHIP of 1.32 this year. Boston has lost both meetings with Tampa this season when Matsuzaka has made the start. The Red Sox are 10-3 in their last 13 during game 2 of a series. Boston is 2-5 in their last 7 games on grass. The Red Sox are 4-0 in Matsuzaka's last 4 starts against the American League East. Boston is 5-1 in Matsuzaka's last 6 home starts against a team with a winning record. The Red Sox are 8-2 in Matsuzaka's last 10 home starts overall.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

DODGERS: (-135, O/U 6.5) Los Angeles certainly isn't doing themselves any favors, as they've failed of late to get themselves right back in the thick of the playoff chase in the National League. As a result of their inconsistent play, the Dodgers are only 69-68 SU this season. The Dodgers offense simply isn't carrying the weight that this pitching staff is. Time and time again, the Dodgers have lost games this year after receiving a Quality Start from their starting rotation. The Dodgers are -9.58 and -12.79 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Lefty Clayton Kershaw will make the road start tonight, as he is 11-9 with an ERA of 3.01 and a WHIP of 1.24 this season. The Dodgers are 7-3 in their last 10 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Los Angeles is 6-13 in their last 19 road games against a right-handed starter. The Dodgers are 8-22 in their last 30 road games against a team with a winning record. The Dodgers are 1-4 in their last 5 games against the National League West. Los Angeles is 10-2 in Kershaw's last 12 starts against the National League West. The Dodgers are 5-2 in Kershaw's last 7 starts with 5 days of rest. Los Angeles is 3-8 in Kershaw's last 11 starts against a team with a winning record.

Dodgers are 9-4 last 13 games as a road favorite.
Under is 5-1 last 6 road games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.

Key Injuries - C Russell Martin (hip) is out.

Projected Score: 5 (OVER-Total of the Day)

PADRES: San Diego is really struggling, going thru their worst losing streak in several years. The Padres have lost 10 consecutive games to let nearly everyone in the National League West back in the race for the postseason. For a division leader that shown so much consistency this year, this extended losing streak is shocking. The Padres are 76-59 SU this year, including 38-29 SU at home. San Diego is +18.89 and +10.57 units both SU and on the RL overall this year. Veteran and team leader Kevin Correia will take the ball today, looking to get his team back on track. Correia is 10-10 with an ERA of 5.52 and a WHIP of 1.50 this season. The Padres are 9-3 in their last 12 home games against a left-handed starter. San Diego is 1-4 in their last 5 home games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. The Padres are 1-5 in their last 6 games as a home underdog. San Diego is 6-2 in Correia's last 8 starts as a home favorite. The Padres are 2-7 in Correia's last 9 starts against the National League West. San Diego is 1-4 in Correia's last 5 starts as a home underdog.

Padres are 0-7 last 7 games against the National League West.
Under is 6-1 last 7 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - 3B Jerry Hairston (elbow) is out.
