    Daily Sports Roundup: September 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays begin a series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox, the CFL stages its holiday rivalries, and Boise State battles Virginia Tech.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College football wraps up its first week with two games on Monday: Navy vs. Maryland (at M&T Bank Stadium), and No. 3 Boise State vs. No. 10 Virginia Tech (at FedExField). Oddsmakers have Navy set as the 6.5-point favorite in that first matchup, with the total at 48.5. Boise State is then a slim 1.5-point favorite, with the total for that contest at 50.5.

As well, the Canadian Football League offers up its regular Labour Day battles on Monday, with Toronto at Hamilton and Edmonton at Calgary. The Argonauts (5-3 SU, 5-3 ATS) and Tiger-Cats (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) will be playing for the second straight game; Hamilton won 16-12 on the road in Week 8, and they're a 4-point home favorite for Monday (with the total at 50). The Eskimos (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) are big 12.5-point underdogs against the rival Stampeders (7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS), with that game's total at 54.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Monday it's Baltimore at the Yankees, the White Sox at Detroit, Texas at Toronto, Kansas City at Minnesota, Seattle at Oakland, Cleveland at the Angels, and Tampa Bay at Boston. The Rays will go with Jeff Niemann (10-5, 3.97 ERA) in that last matchup, while the Red Sox counter with Jon Lester (15-8, 3.27 ERA). Righthander Niemann has been knocked around in each of his last two starts, giving up a combined 17 runs on 15 hits over 8 1-3 innings of work against the Blue Jays and Angels. Lefthander Lester is coming off a win over the Orioles (five runs in six innings), and he beat the Rays on August 27 (one unearned run in seven innings).

Over in the National League on Monday there's a doubleheader between the Marlins and Phillies in Philadelphia, along with the Mets at Washington, Atlanta at Pittsburgh, St. Louis at Milwaukee, Houston at the Cubs, San Francisco at Arizona, the Dodgers at San Diego, and Cincinnati at Colorado. Aaron Harang (6-7, 4.92 ERA) is slated to take on Ubaldo Jimenez (17-6, 2.69 ERA) in that Reds/Rockies matchup. Righthander Harang took a no-decision against the Brewers last time out, giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits over just four innings. Righthander Jimenez is coming off a hard-luck loss to the Giants in which he gave up two runs over eight innings while fanning 10.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Phillies at Marlins: Line and total are off pending Marlins' announcement of a starting pitchers for doubleheader.

Lines to keep an eye on

Navy vs. Maryland: Navy opened at as a 10.5-point favorite but have dropped to 6.5. Total opened at 46 and has climbed as high as 48.5 on most books.

Boise State at Virginia Tech: Boise State opened as a 2.5-point favorite but this one is down to a pick' em. Total has dipped from 53 at opening but now at 51.

White Sox at Tigers: Total opened at 8 but has slipped to 7.5 at some books.

      Weather to watch

Astros at Cubs: Wind blowing out to left/center field at 20 mph.

      Who's hot

Astros are 9-1 in their last 10 on the road.

Yankees have won eight of their last nine.

Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10.

White Sox have won six in a row.

Twins are 5-1 in their last six.

      Who's not

Cardinals are 6-16 in their last 22.

Reds are 5-17 in last 22 vs, Rockies.

Giants are 3-7 in last 10 on the road.

Red Sox are 1-6 in their last seven vs. Rays.

Padres have lost 10 in a row.

      Key stat

.536 - Colorado Rockies slugger Carlos Gonzalez's batting average over the past seven games. He also had nine RBIs and four home runs during that stretch.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds is listed as day-to-day with a swollen right hand. Reynolds left Sunday's game after aggravating a bone bruise near his wrist. He went 0-for-4 Sunday to drop his season average to .212, but has 32 home runs, 83 RBIs and has been a key contributer during the D-backs recent surge.

      Game of the day

Boise State at Virginia Tech (Pick, 51)

      Notable quotable

"I don't feel like I'm a dirty racer. I feel like I'm a hard racer and an aggressive one. I wouldn't call it dirty. Dirty is when you run into the back of somebody down the back straightaway and put them in the fence."

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch responding to rival Todd Bodine calling him a "dirty" racer.

      Tips and notes

The injury bug is finally catching up with the Texas Rangers, who were swept by the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton injured ribs while running into the outfield wall Saturday and could be out for a week. The AL MVP candidate is batting .361 with 31 homers and 97 RBI. Also, pitcher Cliff Lee is being skipped in the rotation for his scheduled start on Tuesday for back stiffness. The Rangers have been overachieving all season, but how will they react without some key leaders?

The Houston Texans are now the "favorites" to sign free-agent quarterback Matt Leinart, who was released by the Arizona Cardinals last week, according to a report on ESPN.com. Leinart was rumored to be reuniting with former USC coach Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks but there has been little movement. The Cincinnati Bengals also were believed to be in the mix but they claimed former Chicago Bears quarterback Dan LeFevour off waivers on Sunday after cutting J.T. O'Sullivan. Texans coach Gary Kubiak is said the be interested but he prefers athletic, mobile QBs and Leinart is considered to be neither. Stay tuned.

North Carolina's courageous comeback bid against LSU didn't stop the fallout from the NCAA investigation into the football program as associate head coach John Blake resigned Sunday. In a statement released by the school, Blake said he decided to leave the program because his presence "has become a distraction" to his family and the school. The NCAA probe is focusing on improper contact between players and sports agents. Blake's friendship with NFL agent Gary Wichard reportedly is being investigated. Among the players Blake recruited is senior defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who was among 13 players suspended for Saturday's clash with LSU.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Company called 3G Capital just bought 12,000+ Burger King stores for $3.26B; in the last year, 90% of new Burger Kings were in other countries, as BK tries harder to go global.

-- Poker player Phil Hellmuth is throwing out the first pitch before the Mariners-A's game Tuesday night; I'm not 100% sure why.

-- I'm told they show CFL games on NFL Network on Friday nights. Terrific. Too bad my Time-Warner cable system is run by morons.

-- Five undrafted free agents made the Rams' 53-man roster. Trying to figure out if thats good or not. We'll have a hungry team, for sure.

-- Redskins drafted six guys in April; only two made the team; either their roster is loaded, or they didn't draft very well.

-- Tony Stewart ended a 31-race drought by winning the Atlanta race Sunday night. Do NASCAR drivers have a hard time when they have to drive on city streets?

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

        13) Most exciting game of the 2010 college football season may already have been played; Tulsa/East Carolina combined for 1,117 total yards, 12 lead changes, with ECU scoring on 33-yard Hail Mary on last play of a wild 51-49 Pirate win Sunday afternoon in Greenville.

        12) Padres lost their 10th game in row Sunday; their lead in NL West is down to one slim game with four weeks to go.

        11) Over last thirty years, the longest losing streak by a team that went on to win its division was an 11-game skid by the '82 Atlanta Braves.

        10) Ryne Sandberg is Manager of the Year in the PCL, which puts little more pressure on Cubs to hire him as manager next year.

9 Gio Gonzalez was awesome for the A's Friday, blanking Angels for six innings, but what a weird six innings. He started the first 16 batters of the game with a 1-0 count. The odds of doing that and not allowing a run are really high. Gonzalez has really had an excellent season. Weirdest thing is that after 16 1-0 counts, 17th hitter swung at the first pitch.

        8) Life is weird sometimes; Matt Cassel, John David Booty were both backup QBs at USC, but are both in NFL; Cassel never started a game for Trojans, but starts for the Chiefs, all while Matt Leinart is out of a pro job, even though he was a big star at USC. Go figure.

        7) Of the 32 NFL coaches, Ken Whisenhunt/Pete Carroll know Leinart the best, by far, yet neither guy wants him. Seattle signed Zac Robinson of Oklahoma State as an extra QB Sunday. What does that tell you?

        6) So I'm sitting in a bar watching a replay of Vikings-Broncos Sunday- near end of the game, they show Brett Favre, in t-shirts/jeans, talking on sidelines with Sage Rosenfels. Who knew that Rosenfels would be traded less than 24 hours after the game ended? Good move by the Giants.

        5) Derek Jeter is hitting .278 when he hits leadoff, but is 5-49 when he is in the #2 slot. Yes, 5-49. Guess the captain prefers to bat leadoff.

        4) Florida's Logan Morrison got hit in the head by a line drive while in the on-deck circle, and had to leave the game, so of course the guy who replaces him gets game-winning hit, his first ever in big leagues. Scott Cousins is the first guy in two years whose first hit was a walk-off.

        3) Dolphins' Stadium, or whatever they call it now, has lot of weird stuff happen in it. Two runs scored on a McLouth sacrifice fly earlier in the game, when Cameron Maybin robbed him of a grand slam.

        2) Miguel Tejada played in his 2,000th career game Sunday; he is one of my all-time favorites. I'd love to see the Padres make the playoffs.

        1) Just a guess, but think Tulsa will practice defending Hail Mary's this week, and one sentence will be heard a lot: KNOCK IT DOWN!!!!!!

NCAA Football: Opening line report, Week 2

For an illustration on just how fast things change in college football, look no further than the Kansas Jayhawks.

Just three seasons ago, coach Mark Mangino was the toast of the town in Lawrence, Kan., and his club was among the nation’s elite after a 24-21 win over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

Now? Well, Mangino is gone. Turner Gill is in. And a rebuilding project of monumental proportions is underway.

Look, no one was expecting a return trip to a BCS game this year. But, at the same time, who expected Kansas to lose the opener, 6-3, to North Dakota State?

“It’s one game and that’s how you have to take it and move on from there,” Gill said. “We have to take the things that we did do well and obviously the things that we need to work on. We need to execute better. That’s the bottom line.”

Well, the bottom line for oddsmakers and gamblers, moving forward, is that Kansas is bad. Really bad. And so, when the powers that be in Las Vegas sat down over coffee Sunday morning, one of the toughest lines to plot out, was No. 17 Georgia Tech’s number at Kansas next Saturday at high noon ET.

“Boy, when you talk about Kansas, all you can saw is ‘wow’,” said Pete Korner, senior oddsmaker and founder of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. “The important thing for us, in this instance, is to stay as high as we can.”

Korner settled on Georgia Tech -13 to open the week. There is, of course, a bit of an unknown, as well, on the Yellow Jackets, the defending ACC champions. After all, all they did was beat an FCS team, South Carolina State, 41-10.

But then, again, the Jayhawks lost to an FCS team.

“Historically, in college football, bettors look at the week before, and that is especially true early on because there’s so little to go on,” Korner said. “And that perception of Kansas at this point, is going to be very strong, going the other way, because of what happened.”

It’s hard to blame anyone for that way of thinking.

“It’s just one game,” Kansas linebacker Justin Springer. “We have 11 more to go.”

          Is that good or bad?

Let’s take a look at some other opening lines for next week’s notable games:

          Auburn at Mississippi State (+3.5)

“Lot of difference in opinion regarding Auburn in this one. People could have gone from anywhere around 1 to 6,” Korner said. “We settled on the middle, and went 3.5.”

          West Virginia at Marshall (+13)

“That doesn’t mean Marshall can’t go out, play well at home, and win the game outright,” Korner said. “It’s just a number that we think we can get decent two-way action on.”

          Georgia at South Carolina (-3)

“Tough game, and it’s one that I don’t think the spread will come into play on,” Korner said. “I like Georgia. We sent out South Carolina at 3, but these are two good teams that are very close.”

          South Florida at Florida (-17)

“Without Tim Tebow, there is still a sense that people are feeling out Florida, and just who and what they are,” Korner said. “That said, they are still in a higher class, and there’s an unknown to South Florida at this point.”

          Colorado at Cal (-10)

“A preview of things to come on an annual basis as Colorado will join the Pac-10,” Korner said. “And Colorado played really well this past week. I think this is a take for Colorado fans here. It’s a good number for them.”

          Michigan at Notre Dame (-6)

“It’s always going to be a big game with big action when these two teams play,” Korner said. “We like it at 6 right now, I think that’ll get some two-way action. People are really waiting for Notre Dame to get better. In the meantime, though, I still think they’re going to bet on the Irish, no matter what. So the lines are affected by that, certainly.”

          Florida State at Oklahoma (-11)

“I’m not a big Florida State fan just yet, nothing is a given anymore with that program,” Korner said. “I think this line, given Florida State’s unknown, can go higher, but we’ll let that happen during the week, if it’s meant to be.”

          Miami at Ohio State (-10)

“Again, a good team, getting double digits on the road,” Korner said. “But I’m not sure where the line will go during the week. Personally, I think the Buckeyes handle them.”

          Penn State at Alabama (-12)

“Didn’t like the way Penn State handled itself this past week vs. Youngstown State,” Korner said. “I like it Alabama and 12, and would make it higher if running back Mark Ingram was set to return from injury and play. Alabama can just maul these guys.”

          Oregon at Tennessee (+7.5)

“We had a long talk with this one,” Korner said. “I like Oregon, and think they can really move the ball here, but I couldn’t make it 10. It’s a knee-jerk reaction to bet against West Coast teams when they play on the East Coast. I wouldn’t worry about that here. I really think the Ducks can rip these guys.”

          Virginia at USC (-21)

“It just seems fair,” Korner said. “It’s tough to get a gauge on USC, but they will always have an influence here in Las Vegas, and Virginia may be a little out of their element. At the same time, I’m not sure the Trojans can stop anyone, so if Virginia can score at all, they will have a chance with that number.”

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Roy Oswalt (10-13, 3.01 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

Turns out, Roy Oswalt isn’t really a consolation prize after all. Of course that’s what everyone thought when the Phillies acquired him at the trade deadline. You see, most people were second-guessing Philadelphia management for trading away Cliff Lee in the offseason only to need to trade for another ace by midseason.

Now Lee is struggling in Texas while Oswalt is flourishing in Philly. The Phillies are 6-0 in his last six starts and the under is 4-2 during the stretch.

Oddsmakers have set the total at 6.5 in each of his last two starts and for good reason. Oswalt owns a 1.02 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) over his last five outings.

Mat Latos (13-5, 2.25 ERA), San Diego Padres

The Padres are winning many of Latos’ starts these days but that’s not the youngster’s fault. The 6-foot-6 righty has allowed two or less runs in a ridiculous 14 straight starts. San Diego is just 2-4 in his last six appearances but the under is 5-1-1 in his last seven outings.

                C.J. Wilson (14-5, 2.88 ERA), Texas Rangers

The support for C.J. Wilson’s Cy Young candidacy is swelling these days. Wilson is the straw that stirs the drink in Texas’ pitching staff. He’s carrying the load with Cliff Lee going through a rough spot.

Jennifer Floyd Engel of the Dallas Star-Telegram wrote a great column making the case for Wilson to win the AL Cy Young. Our favorite stat she listed was his 10 wins following a Rangers loss.

Texas is 9-0 in the southpaw’s last nine appearances and the 7-3 in his last 10 starts.

                Struggling

Rodrigo Lopez (5-12, 5.24 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

Look, the whole year has been a struggle for his righty. He might be the worst starting pitcher on the worst team in baseball, so we know we’re not breaking any news here for astute bettors.

The thing is, there are a lot of really good hurlers heading to the mound tomorrow and we needed someone to fill the slumping spot. Lopez fits perfectly.
Arizona is 1-8 in Rodrigo’s last nine appearances and the former Oriole has been tagged for five or more runs in three of his last four outings.

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers (-125, 8)

We all know that Manny Ramirez is no angel. But he's starting to look like the White Sox's savior, or at least one heck of a good-luck charm.

Chicago was sleepwalking through the playoff race, going 7-13 over their last 20 before the White Sox claimed the controversial outfielder/designated hitter off waivers.

Manny has gone 4-for-11 since joining the ChiSox, who have rattled off six straight wins to get back in the race. He seems to have brought some swagger to a team that needed some.

"Manny did not come here to save this ballclub; he came here to make us better," manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters. "We have 25 guys and nine on the field. They all have to contribute for us to win games. If that happens to be Manny, good for us [but] we didn’t bring him here to be the savior, to be the guy."

Whatever the case, it's obvious they have a new shot of confidence after sweeping Ramirez's former team, the other Sox, in Boston on Sunday.

Chicago goes to Detroit with another player motivated by facing his ex-team - pitcher Edwin Jackson. He struck out 11 former teammtes last month but took a no-decision.

But this time his new teammates are swinging the sticks, batting .304 against right-handers in their last 10 outings. Manny is batting .364 lifetime against Tigers righty Max Scherzer.

                Pick: White Sox

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (-130, 8.5)

You can tell a team is struggling when bad news starts leaking out of the clubhouse. The Cardinals, who are 6-16 in their last 22, certainly qualify.

This weekend news broke that outfielder Colby Rasmus asked to be traded after getting berated by manager Tony LaRussa for being late to a July 24 game against the Cubs. La Russa not only confirmed it, he went a step further and said Rasmus also asked to be traded last season.

It may not sound like the spirit you want in a clubhouse, but sometimes you have to clear the air before you can move forward. With Sunday's win over the Reds, consider the Cards' clubhouse officially fumigated.

St. Louis starts right-hander Jake Westbrook, who is 1-3 since joining the Cardinals but has pitched well despite his record. He faces Yovani Gallardo, who is 0-4 lifetime against the Cards. Look for St. Louis to take their frustrations out on the Brew Crew.

                Pick: Cardinals

                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 6 in Baseball History...

1888 - The National League Indianapolis Hoosiers club tries its second experimental night game (the first was August 22), but the natural gas illumination is inadequate, and the idea is dropped.

1905 - Frank Smith of the Chicago White Sox pitched a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers in a 15-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader. The score was the most lopsided margin of victory during a no-hitter in American League history.

1918 - In Game Two of the World Series, which is being played a month early because of World War I, Lefty Tyler of the Cubs drives in two runs in the three-run second. The Red Sox get one in the ninth, but Tyler beats Joe Bush 3-1.

1924 - Urban Shocker of the St. Louis Browns pitched two complete games against the Chicago White Sox and won both, 6-2.
1943 - At sixteen years, eight months, five days, Philadelphia A's pitcher Carl Scheib became the youngest player to appear in an American League game.

1945 - Punching umpire Joe Rue earns an indefinite suspension for Philadelphia A's catcher Greek George. George will not play in the majors again, though his lifetime batting average of .177 might be the main cause.

1950 - Don Newcombe missed pitching complete games in a doubleheader for the Brooklyn Dodgers by leaving in the seventh inning of the second game trailing the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0. Newcombe had won the first game 2-0.

1963 - Baseball historian Lee Allen says the Indians vs Senators game is the 100,000th in Major League history. Bennie Daniels celebrates by beating the Tribe 7-2.

1976 - Los Angeles catcher Steve Yeager was seriously injured when the jagged end of a broken bat struck him in the throat while he was waiting in the on-deck circle.

1977 - The Angels acquire Dave Kingman from the Padres for cash. Nine days later the Yankees will buy Kingman, making him the first player to wear four uniforms in four divisions in the same year. Kingman, who started the season in New York with the Mets, will hit twenty-six home runs to set the mark for the most by a player with more than two teams.

1981 - Despite having won the first-half pennant, Yankees manager Gene Michael is replaced by Bob Lemon, who managed the club in 1978-79. The Yankees are under .500 in the second half of the season.

1981 - Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 to tie a National League record of seven shutouts by a rookie pitcher.

1982 - Veteran first baseman Willie Stargell, whose number is retired, is saluted by 38,000 fans on his day at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. The 41-year-old slugger delivers a pinch single in the Pirates' 6-1 win over the Mets.

1995 - Cal Ripken, Jr. played in his 2,131st consecutive Major League game to surpass Lou Gehrig's 56-year record. Ripken received a 22-minute standing ovation and went 2-for-4, including a homer, in Baltimore's 4-2 win over California.

1996 - Eddie Murray hit his 500th home run, joining Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Willie Mays as the only players with at least 3,000 hits and 500 homers. Murray homered off Felipe Lira in the seventh inning of the Baltimore Orioles' 5-4, 12-inning loss to Detroit.

                    Monday

Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-4, 50)

The Argonauts come to Hamilton to avenge the loss they took from the Tiger Cats in Toronto. Under Jim Barker, the Argos are a far different team from last year. But are they as improved as the Tiger Cats, who have been gaining respect over the last few years to finally give their fans a team they can be truly proud of?

Ball carrier Cory Boyd, for the Argos, has been sensational since the start of the season but probably had his worst game of the year in the 16-12 loss to Hamilton. The Tiger Cats are riding a three-win streak. Despite all the hype surrounding the progress of Argos QB Cleo Lemon, we still doubt his true value as a consistent starter in the CFL.

It’s not the case for his counterpart Kevin Glenn of the Tiger Cats, who is now third in passing in the CFL. His success is linked with the resurrection of the Tiger Cats, who could, with another win against Toronto, claim the season’s series and maybe even a share of first place in the East providing the Alouettes stumble against the Lions.

                    Pick: Hamilton

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-12.5, 54)

Eskimos head coach Richie Hall vows there’s no QB controversy in Edmonton despite the fact he pulled Ricky Ray to bring in young Jared Zabransky in a game where his team stole a surprising win against the mighty Roughriders. Don’t hold your breath. Ray is still No. 1 on the Eskimos depth chart.

Mind you, the Eskimos have other worries starting with the health of kick returner Kelly Campbell, who has been seen in crutches earlier this week at practice. Defensive back Saleem Borhot also looks injured. Those ailments are bad news for a team that was slaughtered 56-16 by these Stampeders two weeks ago - a humiliation that ended in a brawl that got five players fined by the commissioner.

The Stampeders look like they’re back on track and the return of Ken-Yon Rambo, who gained 108 yards last week against the Lions, only makes them more dangerous. Calgary is off to its best start since 1996. Some will say that anything can happen in the Battle of Alberta, but unless the Stampeders players invent ways to lose, it’s tough to imagine the Eskimos pulling off another upset this week.

                    Pick: Calgary
