Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

    Weather to watch

Atlanta at Florida – 30 percent chance of isolated thundershowers

    Who’s hot

Boston is 8-2 in its last 10 home meetings with the White Sox.

Tampa Bay is 40-15 in its last 55 meetings with Baltimore.

Minnesota is 27-11 in its last 38 overall games.

Colorado has won seven of its last nine meetings with San Diego.

    Who’s not

Toronto is 4-10 in its last 14 Sunday games.

Washington is 14-40 in its last 54 road games.

Detroit is 17-36 in its last 53 road games.

St. Louis has lost nine of its last 11 games.

Chicago is 5-13 in its last 18 home games.

    Key stat

1 – The number of total runs Seattle starter Felix Hernandez has allowed over his last five starts, spanning 37 innings. He has struck out 48 batters over that span.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Josh Hamilton – knee/back. Hamilton expected to play Saturday after missing some time over the last week with a wonky knee. He had a lubrication shot in his right knee on Tuesday and says it feels better. However, he left Saturday’s game with lower-back stiffness.

    Game of the day

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox

    Notable quotable

“That was garbage. That's just bad baseball. It's only the fourth inning. If they're going to hold me on, I'm going to roll out. The circumstances were kind of out of whack, but the game was too early. It was only the fourth inning. If it happened again, I'd do it again. It's one of those things where I'm a hard-nosed player. I'm grimey.”

-Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan after he charged the mound in Wednesday’s brawl with the Florida Marlins. Morgan has appealed his eight-game suspension.

    Tips and notes

Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to come off the DL on Sunday and it looked like that was a sure thing earlier in the week. Now that doesn’t seem so concrete. He took some BP and fielding drills before Saturday’s game but was non-committal about Sunday’s game, saying his return may need to wait until Monday or Tuesday.

Derek Lowe knows what the issue is with his pitching elbow and he plans on throwing through it. An MRI showed no ligament or tendon damage, but there is a bone chip that’s stuck in the joint. Lowe who’s now 37 and has never been on the DL in his career expects to make his scheduled start Wednesday against Pittsburgh.

      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Mike Minor (3-0, 3.91 ERA), Atlanta

Mike Minor has had a dream start to his life in the big leagues. The rookie is 3-0 in his first four starts and is coming off a 9-2 win over the New York Mets in his last outing. The lefty scattered seven hits over five innings of work while striking out four and walking two.

Felix Hernandez (10-10, 2.38 ERA) Seattle

Felix Hernandez must have a tough time keeping himself from wondering what life would be like if he wasn’t playing for the Seattle Mariners at this point. He has allowed just a single run over his last five outings, but is only 3-1 over that stretch thanks to Seattle’s terrible run support. During that time he has 48 strikeouts over 37 innings.

Hernandez took a no-decision against the Los Angeles Angels the last time he took the hill, going seven scoreless innings while striking out eight.

      Slumping

Vin Mazzaro (6-7, 4.05 ERA), Oakland

The good news for Vin Mazzaro is that it can’t get much worse than his last start. He gave up three homers and seven earned runs against the New York Yankees in a 9-3 loss the last time he took the hill. Mazzaro is now winless in his last seven outings, with his last win coming on July 29 at home against the
      Texas Rangers.

Rodrigo Lopez (5-12, 5.24 ERA) Arizona

Lopez has suffered three tough starts over his last four outings and hasn’t won a game since July 8 against the Florida Marlins. He hasn’t made it though the fifth inning in his last two, allowing five runs apiece in those outings.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Giants at Dodgers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Giants have a postseason berth in their sights, but their neighbors to the south have other plans.

*Statistics compiled prior to Saturday night’s game.

Until recently, San Diego seemed like a lock to make the postseason, but the division-leading Padres’ recent slide has left the door open for the Giants to make a run at their first NL West title since 2003.

      Starting Off

Jonathan Sanchez (9-8, 3.54) takes the hill for San Francisco in search of a career-best 10th win. Sanchez, San Francisco’s most profitable starter (+490 units), is coming off a strong performance in which he tossed eight innings of one-run ball against Colorado.
He allowed five runs in five innings in his only start against Los Angeles this season, an 8-2 loss on June 30.

Sanchez will face Hiroki Kuroda on Sunday night. The Dodgers’ righthander is under .500 on the year, but has pitched better than his record would indicate.

In his last start, Kuroda (10-11, 3.39) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 3-0 victory over the Phillies. He has lasted at least seven innings in each of his last five starts, a stretch over which he has a 2.78 ERA.

      Catching Up

Giants phenom Buster Posey has been as good as advertised since being called up at the end of May. Over 82 games, the young catcher/first baseman has compiled 54 RBIs and a .876 OPS.

Posey, who was just 16 years old the last time San Francisco played postseason baseball, drove in both of his team’s runs in Friday’s series-opening 4-2 loss.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers have gotten a big boost from midseason acquisition Rod Barajas. The 34 year-old journeyman has filled in admirably for Russell Martin, who is out for the season with a hip injury. Since being acquired from the Mets on August 22, Barajas is batting .375 with four homers and eight RBIs in eight games.

      The Pen is Mightier…

San Francisco’s bullpen is 27-14 on the year with a 3.38 ERA, third-best in the National League. All-Star closer Brian Wilson leads the NL with 38 saves and has allowed just one run in his last 10 outings.

He is a perfect two-for-two in save opportunities against Los Angeles in 2010. In three innings of work against the Dodgers, Wilson has struck out six without allowing a run.

      Wishful Thinking?

The Dodgers are eight games out in the Wild Card race. Their role has seemingly shifted from postseason contender to spoiler, but don’t tell that to Joe Torre.

“I still believe this ballclub has a six- or seven-game winning streak,” Torre told the Dodgers’ official website.

For Los Angeles to make an improbable playoff run, Rafael Furcal will have to make up for lost time. The starting shortstop missed more than a month with a low back strain before making his return on Friday night.

Torre was pleased with Furcal’s approach at the plate, although Furcal committed a costly error in the field, leading to the Giants’ only two runs.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox (-140, 9)

It’s not that the Boston Red Sox are throwing in the towel or anything, but they aren’t kidding themselves about their situation either. They sit 7 ½ games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the AL Wild Card.

"I don't think we've pulled up the tent yet, we just have to play really well,'' Sunday’s starter Josh Beckett told reporters. "Really, really well.''

Boston is 3-4 in its last seven games. They face Chicago’s Mark Buehrle, who has allowed more than four runs only once in his last six starts.

      Pick: White Sox

Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals (-180, 7.5)

It’s pretty hard to go against St. Louis’ Chris Carpenter when he’s at home in a big pressure situation. Carpenter hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in his last 10 starts and is 14-5 on the year. That said, if there’s one team that’s going to put a few crooked numbers on the board against him, it’s the Reds.

Paced by NL Triple Crown candidate Joey Votto, Cincinnati has scored at least five runs in eight of their last 10 games.

      Pick: Over

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 5 in Baseball History...

1908 - Brooklyn's Nap Rucker pitched a 6-0 no-hitter against the Boston Braves at Washington Park. Rucker struck out fourteen and walked none. The Dodgers made three errors.

1918 - The Cubs switch their home games to Comiskey Park with its larger seating capacity for the World Series. Babe Ruth/A>, having completed thirteen scoreless innings in his first World Series two years ago, adds nine more in edging Hippo Vaughn 1-0 in the opener. During the seventh-inning stretch, a military band plays "The Star Spangled Banner." From then on, it is played at every World Series game, every season opener, and whenever a band is present to play it, though it is not yet adopted as the national anthem. The custom of playing it before every game will begin during World War II, after the installation of public address systems.

1921 - Walter Johnson breaks Cy Young's career strikeout mark by fanning seven Yankees to run his total to 2,287.

1954 - Joe Bauman, playing for Roswell of the Longhorn League, hit three home runs to give him 72 for the season. Bauman never made it to the majors.

1955 - Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers hit his seventh homer of the season for a National League record for home runs by a pitcher. The Dodgers beat the Phillies 11-4.

1971 - J.R. Richard tied Karl Spooner's Major League record by striking out fifteen San Francisco Giants in his first Major League game as the Houston Astros beat the Giants.

1979 - Matt Keough of the A's beats the Brewers 6-1 for his first victory after 14 straight losses. He ended 1978 with four defeats and barely avoided tying the American League record of nineteen consecutive losses.

1982 - Roy Smalley hit a pair of three-run homers, one from each side of the plate, as the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 18-7.

1998 - Mark McGwire became only the third player to reach sixty home runs, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-0. He joined Babe Ruth and Roger Maris with sixty homers in a single season.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Storm at Phoenix Mercury (-1.5, 174)

Somehow, some way, the Seattle Storm continue to get the best of the Phoenix Mercury ever time they meet on the court. They have booked blowouts, overtime wins and everything in between as they look to close out the best-of-three series.

At this point, it’s hard to see how Phoenix is going to get the best of Seattle. The Storm are controlling the pace and keeping the Mercury from turning this into a track meet. Looks like it could be curtains for the Mercury.

        Pick: Storm

Atlanta Dream at New York Liberty (-4.5, 165)

The Dream had better have done their homework on the Liberty because this is a different club since the All-Star break. New York was just 7-9 at the break but finished the season 15-3.

These two teams split four meetings in the regular season so home court could mean a lot in this series. New York was 15-4 at MSG this year.

        Pick: Liberty

Canadian Bacon: Week 10 Analysis and predictions
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Sunday

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-9.5, 58)

Let’s face it, the Blue Bombers are a much better team than their 2-6 record may suggest. They’ve lost some close games and injuries to Buck Pierce (knee) and Steven Jyles (ribs) didn’t help Paul La Police’s squad.

The problem for Winnipeg is that the Riders are also better than their 5-3 record indicates. Last week, Darian Durant was erratic in a 17-14 loss to the Eskimos - a game where he was picked off three times. Durant has thrown more interceptions than touchdown passes (12 to 11) this season.

Saskatchewan offensive coordinator Doug Berry will face the Bombers for the first time since he was dismissed two years ago. He admitted this week that he probably has been too conservative in his play calling. He will have all the reasons in the world to go for more spectacular plays against Winnipeg this week.

          Pick: Saskatchewan

          Monday

Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-4, 50)

The Argonauts come to Hamilton to avenge the loss they took from the Tiger Cats in Toronto. Under Jim Barker, the Argos are a far different team from last year. But are they as improved as the Tiger Cats, who have been gaining respect over the last few years to finally give their fans a team they can be truly proud of?

Ball carrier Cory Boyd, for the Argos, has been sensational since the start of the season but probably had his worst game of the year in the 16-12 loss to Hamilton. The Tiger Cats are riding a three-win streak. Despite all the hype surrounding the progress of Argos QB Cleo Lemon, we still doubt his true value as a consistent starter in the CFL.

It’s not the case for his counterpart Kevin Glenn of the Tiger Cats, who is now third in passing in the CFL. His success is linked with the resurrection of the Tiger Cats, who could, with another win against Toronto, claim the season’s series and maybe even a share of first place in the East providing the Alouettes stumble against the Lions.

          Pick: Hamilton

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-12.5, 54)

Eskimos head coach Richie Hall vows there’s no QB controversy in Edmonton despite the fact he pulled Ricky Ray to bring in young Jared Zabransky in a game where his team stole a surprising win against the mighty Roughriders. Don’t hold your breath. Ray is still No. 1 on the Eskimos depth chart.

Mind you, the Eskimos have other worries starting with the health of kick returner Kelly Campbell, who has been seen in crutches earlier this week at practice. Defensive back Saleem Borhot also looks injured. Those ailments are bad news for a team that was slaughtered 56-16 by these Stampeders two weeks ago - a humiliation that ended in a brawl that got five players fined by the commissioner.

The Stampeders look like they’re back on track and the return of Ken-Yon Rambo, who gained 108 yards last week against the Lions, only makes them more dangerous. Calgary is off to its best start since 1996. Some will say that anything can happen in the Battle of Alberta, but unless the Stampeders players invent ways to lose, it’s tough to imagine the Eskimos pulling off another upset this week.

          Pick: Calgary

              Daily Sports Roundup: September 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cardinals play host to the Reds, the WNBA playoffs continue, and the Sprint Cup Series hits the track at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

              Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are two college football games on the schedule for Sunday, with Tulsa at East Carolina and SMU at Texas Tech. The oddsmakers like Tulsa in that first contest, setting them as 7-point favorites with the total at 59. Texas Tech is then a 13.5-point favorite in their game against the Mustangs, with the total for that contest at 60.5 points.

As well, there is one Canadian Football League game on the Sunday schedule, with Winnipeg at Saskatchewan. The Blue Bombers (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) are riding a four-game losing streak into Sunday's game, while the Roughriders (5-3 SU, 5-3 ATS) fell 17-14 on the road to lowly Edmonton last time out. The oddsmakers have Saskatchewan listed as the 9.5-point home favorite for Sunday, with that total set at 58.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Sunday has Toronto at the Yankees, Tampa Bay at Baltimore, the White Sox at Boston, Detroit at Kansas City, the Angels at Oakland, Cleveland at Seattle, and Texas at Minnesota. C.J. Wilson (14-5, 2.88 ERA) will take on Nick Blackburn (8-9, 6.04 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Wilson blanked the Royals over 7 2-3 innings last time out, and he beat the Twins back on August 25 (two earned runs over six innings pitched). Righthander Blackburn held the Mariners scoreless over 8 2-3 innings in his last start, giving up two hits and striking out six batters. Blackburn lost to the Rangers on August 23 (three runs over his seven innings).

Over in the National League on Sunday it's then Atlanta at Florida, Washington at Pittsburgh, Milwaukee at Philadelphia, the Mets at the Cubs, Colorado at San Diego, Houston at Arizona, San Francisco at the Dodgers, and Cincinnati at St. Louis. The Reds are expected to go with Homer Bailey (3-2, 4.92 ERA) on Sunday, while the Cardinals counter with Chris Carpenter (14-5, 2.92 ERA). Righthander Bailey had to settle for a no-decision against the Brewers in his most recent start, giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings. Righthander Carpenter was tagged for a loss by the Astros in his last trip to the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) over seven innings.

              Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will compete in a rare Sunday night event this week as they take to the track in the Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Jimmie Johnson, who won twice at that track back in 2007, is the oddsmakers' 11/2 favorite to get the win on Sunday. Kurt Busch won the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta back in March, and he's next at 8/1 odds, while Kyle Busch (who won at Atlanta in 2008) is pegged at 9/1 odds. Defending race champion Kasey Kahne is sitting at 12/1 odds to win the Emory Healthcare 500, with standings leader Kevin Harvick just ahead at 10/1.

              Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA's playoff schedule for Sunday, with Atlanta at New York in the opener of the Eastern Conference Finals, and Seattle at Phoenix in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals. The Storm took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series with an 82-74 home win in Game 1 on Thursday night; Lauren Jackson led the way for Seattle with 23 points and 17 rebounds in that victory. The Mercury/Storm matchup for Sunday is listed as a pick'em, while the Liberty are 4.5-point home favorites.

                Sunday's six-pack

-- Padres lost their last nine games; Giants won in LA, so San Diego's lead in NL West is down to two games. Giants won a game after they trailed 4-0 in 7th inning-- big win for them.

-- A's beat Angels 3-1; Halos scored one lone run in Jered Weaver's last four starts.

-- Angel Pagan was HBP for first time in 1,350 career ABs, but the slumping Mets lost anyway, 5-3 at Wrigley.

-- Detroit Tigers (8) have most wins this season in games they trailed in by four or more runs; Red Sox (7) are next.

-- Phillies (24-14) have best record in one-run games; Brewers (23-18) and Orioles (also 23-18) are next on the list.

-- Arizona called up 37-year old Mike Hampton; not really sure why.

                ************************************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a football Saturday........

                13) Chances are we both had a better day than Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt; his Rebels led I-AA Jacksonville State 31-10 at half, but lost to the Gamecocks 49-48 in OT. Just a horrible loss for an SEC team.

                12) Kansas also lost to a I-AA team, losing 6-3 to North Dakota State in Turner Gill's debut as the Jayhawks' coach. Kansas' QB is named Kale Pick, making him the football version of Grant Balfour/Homer Bailey. Pick is a lousy name for a quarterback.

                11) Illinois led Missouri 13-3 at the half, Washington led BYU 17-13 at halftime, but both teams lost, with neither scoring in the second half.

                10) As far as I can tell, Washington-BYU and South Dakota-UCF games were the only two games Saturday where neither team had a turnover.

                9) Oregon led New Mexico 59-0 at the half; is it too early for Lobos to go out and sign Mike Leach to coach their team next season?

                8) Pundits were mocking Big East teams; lets take a closer look:
Cincinnati-- Lost 28-14 (+2.5) at Fresno State.
UConn-- Lost 30-10 (+3) at Michigan.
Louisville-- Lost 23-16 (+3) at home to rival Kentucky.
Pitt-- Lost 27-24 (+3) in OT at Utah.
Rutgers-- Beat I-AA Norfolk State 31-0; was 6-0 at half.
South Florida-- Beat I-AA Stony Brook 59-14.
Syracuse-- Best day of any team in league; won 29-3 (-8) at Akron.
West Virginia-- Beat I-AA Coastal Carolina 31-0; was 10-0 at half.

3-0 vs I-AA teams, 1-4 vs I-A teams, but favorite was 4-0-1 vs spread in those five games. Big East teams won when they were supposed to win, lost when they were supposed to lose. I give the teams that went on the road credit for having onions to schedule competitive games. .

                7) Kansas State ran ball for 313 yards in 31-22 payback win over UCLA team whose offensive line is banged-up.

                6) Florida beat Miami OH 34-12, but upon further review, Gators were dismal on offense for much of the game; they had eight fumbles, losing three, and with 13:00 left to play, had only 25 yards of total offense.

                5) If I was a Miami Ohio fan, I'd be worried about my coach; they tried two fake punts in first 19:00 of the game, one on their own 20-yard line when they were trailing 7-3. Miami's defense played its butt off, keeping Red Hawks in the game, but the Miami coaches didn't have their backs. Doing goofy things (even the fake punt that worked was a feeble effort where the receiver made a great catch) isn't going to generate confidence.

                4) Oklahoma 31, Utah State 24. Total yardage: 422-421, Sooners. Hard to tell if the Aggies are a lot better or if the Sooners should be worried. Florida State comes to Norman Saturday; we'll know more then.

                3) Why would Ohio U schedule Wofford? Terriers don't throw the ball at all (0-4 Saturday). Why schedule a tuneup game when you can't get any practice for your pass defense?

                2) In an interesting NFL note, Seahawks' OL coach Alex Gibbs up and quit Saturday, a week before the season. Bad omen for Pete Carroll.

                1) I'm against I-A teams fattening their records against I-AA teams, so if one of them gets beat by a I-AA team, it would be a neat rule if the loss made them imeligible for a bowl game. All of a sudden Sun Belt teams and MAC clubs are going to be getting a lot more phone calls for games, which is the way it should be.
