Bettors' best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

    Weather to watch

Blue Jays at Yankees: There is an expected 19 mph wind blowing out toward right field.

Mets at Cubs: There is an expected 18 mph wind blowing across the diamond from third toward first.

Padres at Rockies: There is an expected 11 mph wind blowing in from left center field.

White Sox at Red Sox: There is an expected 20 mph wind blowing in from center field.

Brewers at Phillies: There is an expected 16 mph wind blowing across the diamond from third toward first.

Rays at Orioles: There is an expected 16 mph wind blowing out toward right center field.

Nationals at Pirates: There is an expected 15 mph wind blowing out toward left center field.

Braves at Marlins: There is a 40 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms.

    Who’s hot

The Twins are 52-25 in their past 77 home games.

The Cubs are 7-3 in their past 10 overall.

The over is 8-3 in the Yankees past 11 home games.

    Who’s not

The Indians are 2-6 in their past eight as a favorite.

The under is 11-1 in the Rockies past 11 road games.

The under is 7-2-1 in the Red Sox past 10 games overall.

    Key stat

7: Wins in eight games ATS as an under-dog last year by Southern Methodist coach June Jones. That impressive record is indication he is helping the Mustangs rebuild and are a frisky pick at +13.5 for Sunday afternoon’s tilt.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

It’s not the dreaded “dead arm,” but we are getting into dangerously close territory for Twins pitcher Scott Baker. The hurler is again ailing as he will miss his next start after getting yanked from Thursday’s game against the Tigers with pain in his right elbow. Baker is a solid 12-9 this year with a 4.60 ERA. This normally would just be a hiccup, but the Twins used a pair of starters out of the bullpen earlier this week, started a rookie on Friday and had to drain their relievers even more by filling in for the final seven innings of Baker’s start against Detroit. Even worse recently acquired reliever Brian Fuentes will miss at least two days with a bad back. Keep a close eye on the hurlers in Minnesota.

    Game of the Day

Connecticut Huskies at Michigan Wolverines (-3, 52)

    Notable quotes

"As soon as we come off vacation, we're going to cook that little yellow chump. We ain't worried about that. So they ain't gotta worry about me fighting the midget. Once I kick the midget ass, I don't want you all to jump on my d---. So you all better get on the bandwagon now. ... Once I stomp the midget, I'll make that mother f----- make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice." – Floyd Mayweather on fighting Manny Pacquiao.

    Tips and notes

Want to know how Kansas State went from a 3-point underdog to a 1.5-point fave against UCLA the past six weeks? Try a torn back muscle for Bruins quarterback Kevin Prince and a banged-up offensive line that is in shambles. Starting center Kai Maiava has a fractured ankle and is out. Guard Jeff Baca has a broken food. Right tackle Mike Harris is suspended for academic issues. Good luck blocking anyone in Manhattan. "This is really upsetting, to be honest with you," sophomore quarterback Kevin Prince said. "Kai is the anchor of the offensive line. Without him, we'll be OK, but it won’t be the same. He brought the mentality you like to have, that dominating mentality. He's experienced. We're going to miss him."

If you can find a line for the Eastern Illinois-Iowa game on Saturday, you might find some hidden value. The Panthers have made the FCS playoffs seven of the past 10 years and are a consistent top 25 team. Don’t forget the near-disastrous loss to Northern Iowa that the Hawkeyes narrowly avoided with two blocked field goals at the horn last year. The Panthers aren’t quite on the same level as Northern Iowa, but the Hawkeyes will be without suspended starting defensive end Broderick Binns and running back Jewel Hampton. Now also missing the game are junior offensive guard Adam Gettis, junior cornerback Shaun Prater and senior kicker Daniel Murray due to injury. Start trying to find some action already.

Why can’t Zach Johnson win the Deutsche Bank Championship? Expected 50 mph gusting winds never showed up in Massachusetts on late Friday, setting the stage for beautiful weather and allowing the up-and-coming American to surge to the front of the pack and tie Jason day for the lead at 8-under par. The key for Johnson has been his ability to start consistently putting himself in position to make puts – he entered the weekend ranked an abysmal 111th on tour for the season by hitting a meager 66.2 percent of the greens in regulation. Head-to-head he is listed at just -130 against Justin Rose and a great value.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Jon Garland (13-8, 3.29 ERA), San Diego Padres

There have been plenty of nice surprises for the Padres this season and Jon Garland might have to be at the top of that list. Paying a potential 15-game winner who’s got an ERA under 3.30 for $4.7 million dollars seems like a steal.

Sure he walks too many (he’s flirting with a career-high season total) but he always seems to limit the damage. San Diego is 6-3 in his last nine starts and seven of those nine outings were quality starts too.

Rick Porcello (7-11, 5.20 ERA), Detroit Tigers

Porcello’s final 2010 numbers will look pretty ugly compared to his banner rookie season. Still, Detroit backers have to be happy with the way he’s ending his sophomore campaign. Porcello has allowed just one run and one walk in his last two starts.

The Tigers are 4-1 in his last five outings and he was a dog in three of those games.

      Slumping

Travis Wood (4-2, 3.53 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

Wood is a solid young talent but if you’re a Cincy backer, you’ve got to be worried about him pitching for your club in October. Sure, the Reds have won six of his last seven times he toed the rubber but Wood’s given up 10 runs on 17 hits over his last nine innings pitched.

Not surprisingly, the over is 6-1 in his last seven starts.

Josh Johnson (11-5, 2.28 ERA), Florida Marlins

Look, Josh Johnson isn’t really pitching terribly. It’s just that the Marlins never seem to be able to win whenever the big righthander is on the mound. Florida is 2-5 in Johnson’s last seven appearances and the over is 6-1 over the same stretch.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees (-186, 10)

Don’t balk at the double-digit total. Let’s see what the stats have to say first – and they say a lot.

The teams have combined to go 6-2-1 against the total in their past 10 meetings, scoring at least a combined 10 runs six times. And both teams are in a role very comfortable to them on Saturday.

The Blue Jays are 7-3-1 against the total in their past 11 as an underdog. As a favorite, the Yankees are a staggering 8-2-1 against the number in their past 11.

And the pitching? Gas cans Marc Rzepczynski and Javier Vasquez have combined to see five of their past six starts to over the total. Over that span they have an 8.31 and 9.53 ERA respectively.

Also, the Yankees have scored a league-leading 726 runs, while the Blue Jays have smacked a Major League-best 202 gopher balls.

      Need I go on?

      Pick: Over.

Houston Astros at Arizona Diamondbacks (-140, 9)

To put it simply, the Astros are snake-bit when they visit Arizona.

Houston has lost 11 of its past 14 trips to the desert and is a horrendous 1-7 in its past eight overall against the D-backs.

The Astros think they should be able to buck that trend by winning eight of their past 10, but the Diamondbacks have claimed six of their past seven and are surging offensively. The snakes have rattled off at least six runs over that span and are hitting way above their season average of .252.

"The guys have been playing good baseball and hopefully we can keep it going," Centerfielder Chris Young told the Associated Press. "It's nice to know we can make a difference."

If you need anymore convincing, then here is this: the Astros are one of the worst road hitting teams in the Majors. Houston is hitting a meager .244 in opponents yards this season and have scored a paltry 248 runs away from Minute Maid Park.

Look for the Astros to be grounded.

      Pick: Diamondbacks.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 4 in Baseball History...

1891 - Cap Anson shows up for today's game wearing a wig and a long white beard, much to the delight of the Chicago crowd. Anson wears the costume throughout the game, which his Colts win over the Beaneaters 5-3.

1899 - The Superbas, already famous for their late rallies, stage "Brooklyn finishes" in two different boroughs. They win the morning game at home with two in the ninth, and then take the afternoon game in Manhattan with four in the eighth.

1908 - The Pirates and Cubs are tied 0-0 in the last of the tenth at Pittsburgh. With two outs and the bases loaded, Pittsburgh's Chief Wilson singles to center, scoring Fred Clarke with the winning run. Warren Gill, on first base, does not get to second base buts stops short, turns, and heads for the dugout, a common practice. The Cubs' Johnny Evers calls for the ball from Jimmy Slagle, touches second base, and claims the run does not count as Gill has been forced. The lone umpire, Hank O'Day, has left the field. When queried, he rules that Clarke had already scored, so the run counts. The Cubs protest the game, but are denied. This is the first time the Cubs try this tactic, but not the last.

1916 - Longtime pitching rivals Christy Mathewson and Mordecai Brown closed out their careers, by special arrangement, in the same game. Mathewson won the game, 10-8.

1928 - The Boston Braves started a grueling string in which they played nine straight doubleheaders, a Major League record.

1941 - The New York Yankees clinched their third straight pennant on the earliest date in baseball history with a 6-3 victory over Boston.

1966 - Los Angeles became the first team in Major League history to draw more than 2 million at home and on the road as the Dodgers beat the Reds, 8-6, before 18,670 fans in Cincinnati.

1969 - After hitting in 31 straight games, the third-best streak to date in modern National League history, Willie Davis of the Dodgers is stopped in a 3-0 loss to San Diego.

1974 - Don Wilson of the Houston Astros was replaced by a pinch hitter after pitching eight no-hit innings against Cincinnati. Mike Cosgrove pitched the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff single to Tony Perez for the only hit as the Reds won the game, 2-1.

1985 - Gary Carter hit a pair of solo home runs to tie a Major League record and singled in another run to lead the New York Mets to a 9-2 victory over San Diego. Carter's feat followed a three-homer performance the night before as he became the 11th player in Major League history to hit five home runs in two games.

1992 - Eddie Murray ties Al Simmons for most consecutive years (16) with at least 75 RBI.

1993 - Jim Abbott pitched the New York Yankees' first no-hitter in 10 years in a 4-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

1995 - Robin Ventura became the eighth player in Major League history - and the first in 25 years - to hit two grand slams in one game as the Chicago White Sox beat Texas, 14-3.

1998 - The New York Yankees reached 100 wins on the earliest date in Major League history - five days before the 1906 Chicago Cubs and 1954 Cleveland Indians - with an 11-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The '06 Cubs set the Major League record for fewest games to reach 100 victories (132).

          Daily Sports Roundup: September 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Twins play host to the Rangers, the Braves take on the Marlins, and the top-ranked Tide start their season against San Jose State.

          Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The college football season gets underway in earnest on Saturday, with a slate that includes a pair of ranked matchups: No. 21 LSU vs. No. 18 North Carolina (at the Georgia Dome), and No. 24 Oregon State vs. No. 6 TCU (at Cowboys Stadium). Oddsmakers like the Tigers that first matchup; they're a 6.5-point favorite, with the total at 42 points. Meanwhile, TCU is a 13.5-point favorite in their game, with the total at 50.5.

Other games involving ranked teams on Saturday: Samford at No. 20 Florida State, Youngstown State at No. 19 Penn State, Miami (Ohio) at No. 4 Florida (-36.5), Eastern Illinois at No. 9 Iowa, LA-Lafayette at No. 23 Georgia (-28.5), South Carolina State at No. 16 Georgia Tech, Coastal Carolina at No. 25 West Virginia, No. 5 Texas (-30.5) at Rice, New Mexico at No. 11 Oregon (-34), Utah State at No. 7 Oklahoma, Western Kentucky at No. 8 Nebraska (-37.5), Arkansas State at No. 22 Auburn (-31), Tennessee Tech at No. 17 Arkansas, No. 12 Wisconsin (-20.5) at UNLV, and finally San Jose State at No. 1 Alabama (-37). The Crimson Tide will be playing without star running back Mark Ingram on Saturday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Toronto at the Yankees, the Angels at Oakland, Tampa Bay at Baltimore, Detroit at Kansas City, the White Sox at Boston, Cleveland at Seattle, and Texas at Minnesota. The Rangers are expected to send Colby Lewis (9-11, 3.56 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while the Twins counter with Carl Pavano (15-10, 3.52 ERA). Righthander Lewis picked up a no-decision against the Twins back on August 24, giving up three runs over 6 1-3 innings; Texas is just 1-7 in Lewis' last eight starts. Righthander Pavano was tagged with the loss in that August 24 meeting, surrendering four runs on eight hits over his eight innings of work in that game.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's then the Mets at the Cubs, Colorado at San Diego, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Washington at Pittsburgh, Milwaukee at Philadelphia, Houston at Arizona, San Francisco at the Dodgers, and Atlanta at Florida. Jair Jurrjens (6-4, 4.38 ERA) is set to take on Josh Johnson (11-5, 2.28 ERA) in that Braves/Marlins matchup. Righthander Jurrjens is coming off a win over the Mets, giving up three runs on six hits over 5 2-3 innings in that contest while fanning eight. Righthander Johnson was denied a win against the Braves in his most recent trip to the mound despite giving up just one unearned run on three hits in his six innings of work.

            Saturday's six-pack

-- Cole Hamels has a 1.02 RA in his last six starts; Phillies scored total of nine runs in those six games, three of which ended 1-0.

-- Padres have now lost eight in a row, but Giants lost too, so Friars are still three games up in NL West.

-- Carolina Panthers are 0-9 vs spread anytime they've been favored in their first home game of a season.

-- 10 of 32 starting QBs didn't play in preseason games this week.

-- Thursday night was first time Tom Brady played in Patriots' last preseason game since 2003.

-- 32 NFL teams cutting rosters from 75 to 53 players Saturday means that 704 players are losing their jobs this weekend.

            **********************************************

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a late summer day

            13) Ben Roethlisberger's first game back from suspension in on Monday Night Football, in Week 6 against the Browns, during baseball playoffs. If you think this is a coincidence, I'd like to sell you a bridge in NYC......

            12) The reduction of Big Ben's suspension saves the QB $950,000; if his agents work on 4% commission, they earned an extra $38,000 Friday.

            11) So Roethlisberger will miss Pittsburgh's first four games, and Byron Leftwich sprained his knee Thursday, which makes the next month the biggest of young QB Dennis Dixon's career. Dixon and Charlie Batch are going to be the Steelers' only two QBs on the roster for a month.

            10) Joe West is on a one-man crusade to speed up games, but his last three games behind the plate all went extra (13-10-14) innings. Hehe.

            9) Barry Zito is 0-7 in 11 road starts since his last road win, at Florida way back on May 5th.

            8) Why is BYU going independent in football? According to espn.com, Cougars played in the last five Las Vegas Bowls, taking home $4.75M. While this was going on, Virginia Tech was earning $43M for five bowls.

Lets review: BYU is 49-15 last five years, took in $4.75M for bowls.
Virginia Tech is 52-15 the last five years, took in $43M. 43 million. No wonder BYU is angling for a better way to get a piece of the BCS pie.

            7) You don't think college football is king in the south? Braves are in first place in NL East, having a magical season- they drew 24,895 for the Thursday night game with the Mets. Meanwhile, Bill Curry's Georgia State Panthers, a brand-new football team, drew 30,237 to the Georgia Dome for their first-ever game against Shorter College.

            6) I don't want to say Minnesota's Delmon Young is impatient at the plate, but in six plate appearances Thursday, he saw a total of 9 pitches.

            5) Alex Rodriguez fired scumweasel agent Scott Boras, but he still owes the crafty barrister $11.7M over the next seven years. Some are thinking ARod firing Boras is the first step in trying not to pay him the $11.7M.

            4) Hawai'i QBs were 27-49 for 459 yards in 49-36 loss to USC in their season opener Thursday; Trojans' defense is going to struggle against the pass-happy offenses in the Pac-10 this season. It still seems weird that USC can't go to a bowl game this year.

            3) Why were the Arizona Cardinals wearing black jerseys Thursday? Cardinal is a color, a shade of red, obviously. How about wearing red? Larry Wilson never wore black jerseys; neither did Terry Metcalf or Jim Hart or Dan Dierdorf. Today's world is all about marketing.

            2) Did you see the play Presbyterian ran for a TD against Wake Forest Thursday? Great play, hadn't seen it in 28 years-- QB bounces a pass backwards to the WR. When the ball bounces, defenders stop, but since it is a lateral, its still a live ball. WR throws a long pass for an easy TD.

First saw the play in fall of '82, Wisconsin-Illinois; Badgers' QB throws the bounce pass to WR Al Toon (later a star with the Jets) who tosses a long pass to a wide open guy and Wisconsin beats Illinois.

Two sidebars as I ramble endlessly about this obscure play........
-- It was the first college football game I ever bet on, and no, I didn't have Wisconsin. My first bad beat is still in the top five all-time bad beats.
-- Illinois' coach was Mike White; his son was the kicker. 17 years later, White was an assistant coach with the Rams when they won the Super Bowl against Tennessee. I have better memories of that great game.

            1) Giants shored up a major weakness Friday nite by trading for backup QB Sage Rosenfels, who clearly wasn't enamored with Favre-o-Rama in Minnesota. It is widely thought that Rosenfels was leaking stuff to the press with regards to Favre's lack of respect for coach Brad Childress.
