A's and Indians intriguing Tuesday underdog plays

As we close down the month of August tonight, we focus on the two American League teams that scored double-digit runs last night -- the Yankees and White Sox. Both clubs exploded on Monday and are heavily favored to repeat their efforts on Tuesday.
The Yankees crushed Oakland’s Trevor Cahill, tagging him for eight runs on nine hits and raising his ERA from 2.43 to 2.82. The White Sox, possibly jazzed up about signing Manny Ramirez, slammed 10 runs on 21 hits in their extra-inning win at Cleveland. Below is why we think the underdogs are worth the play tonight.

        Oakland (65-65) at New York Yankees (81-50), 7:05 p.m. EDT Sports.com Line: New York -200, Oakland +170 Total: 9
The Yankees had 13 hits last night with the middle of the order doing all the damage. Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher each had three hits and combined for seven runs and seven RBI. Vin Mazzaro (6-6, 3.61 ERA) takes the hill tonight for Oakland and will try to quiet these bats.

The 23-year-old Mazzaro, will be extra geared up for this one having been born in nearby Hackensack, NJ. His first start in Yankee Stadium last August was not so memorable as Mazzaro surrendered six runs on eight hits in just 4.1 IP. But despite having no wins to show for it, Mazzaro carries a current string of five straight quality starts (2.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP). The A’s mustered only 12 total runs in those five outings.

New York counters with Phil Hughes (15-6, 4.12 ERA) who has reaped the benefits of run support this seasons. The Yankees have scored eight or more runs in 11 of his 24 starts this year. The fortunate Hughes was absolutely shelled in his last outing in Toronto, allowing five runs, six hits and walking five in just 3.2 innings. Despite his 9-3 home mark, Hughes has a 4.66 ERA in Yankee Stadium this year, surrendering 16 HR in 83 IP in the hitter-friendly park.

This FoxSheets stat shows that its worth taking a shot on the big underdogs tonight. OAKLAND is 30-28 (+27.1 Units) against the money line as a road underdog of +175 to +200 since 1997. The average score was OAKLAND 4.4, OPPONENT 4.4 - (Rating = 2*).

And if you agree with backing the A’s, you should also play the Under.OAKLAND is 19-6 UNDER (+12.4 Units) in August games this season. The average score was OAKLAND 3.5, OPPONENT 2.8 - (Rating = 2*).

        Chicago White Sox (71-60) at Cleveland (53-78), 7:05 p.m. EDT Sports.com Line: Chicago -140, Cleveland +120 Total: 8.5
As the Manny sideshow rolls into one of his former hometowns, the White Sox find themselves four games back of Minnesota in the AL Central. Last night, Chicago blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning before banging out a four-run 11th inning to beat Cleveland.

The Sox trot out Edwin Jackson (8-10, 4.44 ERA) who has been on a roll since coming to to Chicago. In four starts with the White Sox, Jackson is 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA. But he has only faced two teams in those four games, the mediocre Tigers and the dreadful Orioles.

Cleveland sends Justin Masterson (5-12, 5.23 ERA) to the mound. Masterson has been great at home this year with a 3.76 ERA, including two straight quality starts (12 IP, 6 H, 2 ER). The Indians are 7-5 in Masterson’s 12 home starts as he has surrendered just six homers in 76.2 innings at Progressive Field.

This highly-rated FoxSheets stat shows a cold hitting team usually overcomes a hot pitcher:

Play On - Home teams (CLEVELAND) - cold hitting team - batting .240 or worse over their last 10 games against opponent starting a pitcher who gave up <=1 earned runs in his last 2 outings. (121-60 over the last 5 seasons.) (66.9%, +66.8 units. Rating = 4*).
