Padres at Diamondbacks – Total is up to 9.5 from 9 at the open.
Angels at Mariners – Seattle is a -130 favorite after opening at -140.

    Weather to watch

Rangers at Royals – 60 percent chance of precipitation. Thunderstorms likely.

    Who’s hot

Atlanta is 41-14 in its last 55 home games.
Cincinnati is 11-4 over its last 15 games.
New York Yankees are 83-32 in their last 115 home games.

    Who’s not

Colorado is 5-14 in its last 19 road games.
Los Angeles Angels are 7-19 over their last 26 road games.
Washington is 14-37 in its 51 road games.

    Key stat

.438 – Stephen Drew’s batting average over the last seven games for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Drew has four home runs and nine RBIs over that stretch.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez was back in the lineup Monday after giving the team a scare over the weekend. He left Sunday’s game in the third inning after feeling light-headed while running the bases. Ramirez is hitting .299 with 18 home runs, 67 RBIs with 27 stolen bases on the year.

    Game of the day

    Colorado at San Francisco

    Notable quotable

"People have the wrong idea about Manny. I don't think Manny is a bad guy or a pain in the butt. It's funny how people say Manny is being Manny. Manny is being real. I never see anyone on his team get mad at him because he goes about his business."

-White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen on newly-acquired Manny Ramirez.

    Tips and notes

Manny Ramirez is expected to join the Chicago White Sox in time for Tuesday’s game at Cleveland. Ramirez hit .311 with eight home runs and 40 RBIs with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 66 games. He was on the DL from July 20-Aug. 22 with a strained calf, missing 33 games. Word has it the White Sox are looking to bat him sixth in the lineup.

Mark Teixeira returned to the Yankees’ lineup Monday after suffering a bruised thumb over the weekend. He left Saturday’s game early and didn’t play Sunday.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Milwaukee at Cincinnati (-120, 9)

The Cincinnati Reds are looking to pad their lead in the NL Central at the expense of any team that gets in their way right now. They have put up 27 runs while winning three of their last four heading into Monday’s action and are five games in front of the second-place St. Louis Cardinals.

The Reds have had their way against the Milwaukee Brewers this season too, winning five of six meetings before Monday’s series opener.
Milwaukee sends Yovani Gallardo to the mound against Cincinnati on Tuesday. He has given up 12 earned runs over his last two starts.

      Pick: Reds

Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs (-240, 9)

The Chicago Cubs have been a different team since Lou Piniella turned over the team’s managerial duties to Mike Quade. The Cubs were 4-2 since the change heading into Monday’s game and face a slumping Jeff Karstens on Tuesday.

Karstens had his last scheduled start skipped due to arm fatigue and has already topped 200 innings this year so Pittsburgh is going to keep a close eye on him for the rest of the year. Karstens has dropped four straight starts and is coming off a rotten outing against the New York Mets.

The 6-foot-3 right hander gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits over just 3 1/3 innings of work and has an 8.40 ERA over his last three starts.

      Pick: Over

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Ian Kennedy (8-9, 4.22 ERA) Arizona Diamondbacks

Kennedy is coming off an absolute gem against the San Diego Padres, firing seven innings of shutout ball while allowing just one hit. He struck out a career-high 12 batters.

It was only his first win against San Diego in three tries this year, but he has been fantastic against the Padres in all three starts. He has a 1.59 ERA in those outings, while striking out 27 and walking five.

"The guy who pitched against us has been tough on us, going back to Spring Training in Tucson," Padres manager Bud Black told reporters of Kennedy following their last meeting. "We saw a lot of 3-2 changeups, even deep in the game."

      Slumping

Jeff Karstens (2-10, 4.98 ERA), Pittsburgh Pirates

Karstens is looking for any kind of a break to get him on track. He hasn’t won a game since July 4 and is coming off a nasty effort against the New York Mets the last time he took the hill. Karstens gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits over just 3 1/3 innings.

Karstens has also had problems with arm fatigue lately and skipped a start, but says he’s feeling better now.

"It's been a tough year for Jeff. He bounced around a little bit,” Pirates manager John Russell told reporters. “He's been pretty consistent when he came back as a starter. Now he's kind of caught up in a little fatigue in his arm. Just didn't feel quite right. Instead of pushing it, we figured to give him one start off."

Cliff Lee (10-8, 3.26 ERA), Texas Rangers

Lee heads into Tuesday’s start in the middle of a nasty slump. He has lost three straight starts, allowing at least five runs in each of them. Location problems are his main concern at this point and he’s leaving the ball over the plate far too often lately. He has served up five home runs over his last two outings and has only two wins over his last 10 starts.

Texas will give him a break in the rotation following Tuesday’s game.

"It is late in the year and in the last month of the season I guess an extra day couldn't [hurt]," Lee told reporters. "You can work an extra day in. It's not really that big of a deal one way or the other. An extra day will be a good thing at this point of the season. It's really not that big of a deal."

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 31 in Baseball History...

1906 - Beset by injuries, the Tigers call 46-year-old Sam Thompson out of retirement. He drives in two runs in a 5-1 win over the Browns. Thompson last played in the majors in 1898. He appears in eight games and bats .226.

1909 - The A. J. Reach Company is granted a patent for a cork-centered baseball, which will replace the hard rubber-cored one. This change will be particularly apparent in the NL in 1910-11.

1937 - Detroit's rookie Rudy York sets a new record for home runs in a month, hitting his 17th and 18th to eclipse Babe Ruth's mark set in September 1927. Sammy Sosa will break that mark in 1998.

1935 - Vern Kennedy of the Chicago White Sox pitched a no-hitter to beat Cleveland 5-0. Kennedy also had a bases-loaded triple.

1950 - Brooklyn's Gil Hodges tied a major league record by hitting four homers against the Boston Braves in the Dodgers' 19-3 rout. Hodges also added a single for 17 total bases.

1954 - The Indians beat the Yanks 6-1 to record their 26th win of the month, tying the 1931 Philadelphia A's.

1959 - Sandy Koufax breaks Dizzy Dean's National League mark and ties Bob Feller's major league record of 18 strikeouts in a game against the Giants as 82,974 fans watch. He also totals 31 strikeouts for two consecutive games to set a new major league mark. (The major league record for strikeouts in a game is now shared by Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood, while Wood holds the record with 33 strikeouts over two games.)

1964 - Ground is broken for Anaheim Stadium, future home of next year's Angels.

1968 - Steve Blass gets the first out against the Braves, and then moves to left field as Roy Face relieves. Face retires Felix Millan and ties Walter Johnson's major league record of 802 pitching appearances with one club. Blass comes back in and the Pirates go on to win 8-0. Later in the game, the Pirates announce the sale of Face to the Tigers.

1979 - The Phillies fire Danny Ozark, the club's skipper since 1973. Farm director Dallas Green takes over.

1981 - Royals manager Jim Frey is fired and replaced by Dick Howser, whose Yankees lost to Frey's Royals in last season's American League Championship Series.

1989 - Arbitrator Thomas Roberts orders the major league owners to pay $10.5 million in damages as a result of their collusion against free agents after the 1985 season.

1990 - The Ken Griffeys, Griffey, Jr. in center field and Ken (Sr.) in left field, become the first father-and-son combination in major league history to play as teammates, and they each go 1-for-4 in Seattle's 5-2 win over the Royals. The Mariners had signed the elder Griffey after he was waived by the Reds.

          Daily Sports Roundup: August 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers continue their series against the Royals in Kansas City, and the Cardinals look for a victory over the Astros in Houston.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has Boston at Baltimore, the White Sox at Cleveland, Oakland at the Yankees, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Detroit at Minnesota, the Angels at Seattle, and Texas at Kansas City. Cliff Lee (10-8, 3.26 ERA) is slated to get the ball for the Rangers in that last matchup, while Sean O'Sullivan (2-4, 4.96 ERA) pitches for the Royals. Lefthander Lee picked up his third straight loss last time out, giving up five runs on seven hits over five innings against the Twins. Lee has allowed 19 runs over his last 18 1-3 innings of work. Righthander O'Sullivan had to settle for a no-decision against the Tigers in his last trip to the hill, allowing three runs in seven innings.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it's then Washington at Florida, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, the Mets at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, San Diego at Arizona, Philadelphia at the Dodgers, Colorado at San Francisco, and St. Louis at Houston. The Cardinals will hand the ball to Chris Carpenter (14-4, 2.93 ERA) in that last contest, while the Astros counter with Wandy Rodriguez (10-12, 3.87 ERA). Righthander Carpenter picked up a no-decision against the Nationals last time out, surrendering six runs (three earned) on 10 hits over his six innings of work; Carpenter beat the Astros on August 4 (two runs over 7 1-3 innings). Lefthander Rodriguez faced the Cardinals back on July 11, giving up three runs on four hits over his six innings of work in that defeat.

            Tuesday's six-pack

-- Hiroki Kuroda threw 7.2 innings of one-hit ball, and got his first hit of the year in 46 ABs, as Dodgers beat Philly/Roy Halladay, 3-0.

-- Royals prospect Moustakas had three HRs, 11 RBI Monday night in a AAA game. Why isn't this kid in the big leagues?

-- Pirates have lost 14 in a row on the road; guess firing the pitching coach and the bench coach didn't help too much. Who's next to go?

-- Only two ballplayers have made World Series three years in a row, with three different teams: Don Baylor (1986-8), Eric Hinske (2007-9) Hinske has a shot at four in a row this year, with the Braves.

-- Washington-Florida game started after a 3:10 rain delay; the sideline reporter for Marlins was in the stands, chasing down foul balls, then he'd give them to kids. Seemed like most people got a foul ball.

-- Speaking of crowds, they had 11,968 people in St Pete and 18,842 in Atlanta, lousy crowds for two contending home teams.

            Tuesday's List of 13: Things I learned/re-learned in August

            13) As much as I love the NFL, exhibition games are basically boring, but it would still be fun to have the NFL Network and watch replays of these boring games. Too bad my cable system doesn't carry NFLN.

            12) Cash is king. Greed rules. I mean, for the love of Pete, I'm willing to pay extra for NFL Network, the Sunday Ticket, whatever, but because Time Warner and the NFL hate each other, I'm screwed. Good thing we have two soccer channels and four home shopping networks. Terrific.

            11) I learned that its very hard to pick winners at the racetrack. I don't even try anymore, preferring to donate my money by buying fantastic saltless pretzels, one of the great inventions of our time.

            10) I learned that Bryant Westbrook signed with the 49ers as free agent because Mike Singletary is their coach; we'll see how that works out for him. When Steve Spagnuolo gets named Coach of the Year after season, can we get a comment from the oft-injured Westbrook?

            9) I learned that Billy Fuccillo is America's #1 KIA dealer; he has about 50 commercials a day on TV, reminding us of that fact. I don't know one person who drives a KIA, but thats just me.

            8) Sports Illustrated named Donovan McNabb as best NFL player who ever wore number 5. I'm thinking Paul Hornung, who helped the Packers to multiple NFL championships. Your thoughts?

            7) I learned that Juan Marichal is last pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the same season where his team lost a no-hitter in one of his starts; that was way back in 1963.

            6) I learned that Joe Torre doesn't look quite as smart when his team doesn't have a lot more resources than everyone else.

            5) I learned for the 40th time that if talking were an Olympic sport, Rex Ryan would make Michael Phelps look like the Pittsburgh Pirates.

            4) I learned that going to a playground and shooting hoops is still a lot of fun. Can't play ball anymore (never could.....lol) but shooting is fun.

            3) I learned that people are hell of a lot easier to find when they have $$ coming to them. If they owe you money? Easier to find Bin Laden.

            2) I learned that Johnny Damon doesn't like Boston too much.

            1) One of the great benefits of writing this site is when I get to meet the people who read it; had chance to meet some fellas from Boston at the racetrack this weekend. Good people, solid handicappers. Thanks.

Before we get started in earnest, let me say a big ol' attaboy to BC, Bum, tech and jt!

All I had time for yesterday was some quick-capping so I compared my results with these guys' cards and pulled a great 3-1 night out of what they picked. Thank you, guys!

In the one that lost, the fave needed extra innings to beat a +140 dog by 1 run!

Man, I love hanging around this place!
