    Daily Sports Roundup: August 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Jays hit the road for a series against the Rays, the Phillies send their ace to the mound against the Dodgers, and the U.S. Open begins.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Monday offers up the White Sox at Cleveland, Oakland at the Yankees, Texas at Kansas City, the Angels at Seattle, and Toronto at Tampa Bay. Brett Cecil (11-6, 3.80 ERA) will take on Wade Davis (10-9, 4.41 ERA) in that Jays/Rays matchup. Lefthander Cecil beat Tampa Bay back on August 6, giving up just one run on four hits over his seven innings of work and fanning nine. Righthander Davis is coming off a win over the Angels in which he surrendered two runs on six hits in his 5 1-3 innings of work and struck out five. Tampa is 6-1 in Davis' last seven starts.

Over in the National League on Monday it's then Washington at Florida, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, the Mets at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, St. Louis at Houston, San Diego at Arizona, Colorado at San Francisco, and Philadelphia at the Dodgers. Roy Halladay (16-9, 2.22 ERA) is slated to get the ball for the Phillies in that last contest, while Los Angeles counters with Hiroki Kuroda (9-11, 3.56 ERA). Righthander Halladay was tagged with a loss by the Astros last time out, giving up three runs on six hits over seven innings to stop his six-game winning streak. Righthander Kuroda is coming off a win over the Brewers in which he allowed four runs on seven hits over his seven innings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, the U.S. Open tennis tournament gets underway on Monday, with Roger Federer (11/5) and Rafael Nadal (5/2) the oddsmakers' top choices on the men's side of the draw. Andy Murray is just back of those two on the list at 7/2 odds, with Novak Djokovic at 14/1, Robin Soderling at 18/1, and Tomas Berdych at 20/1. Andy Roddick is pegged at 22/1 odds to win. On the women's side it's Kim Clijsters listed as the 3/1 favorite, followed by Maria Sharapova at 9/2, and Carolina Wozniacki at 7/1. Victoria Azarenka (8/1) and Venus Williams (10/1) round out the Top 5 on the women's odds list.

      Monday's six-pack

Six best, and six worst hitters in baseball, in terms of percentage of runners on base that they've driven in this season......There are 294 major leaguers who have batted 200+ times this season.

      1) ARodriguez NYY........21.3% 294) Quintero Hst 7.5% (9-128)

      2) DYoung Min...............20.8% 293) Santiago Det 7.7% (15-194)

      3) CGonzalez Col............20.7% 292) McLouth Atl 8.0% (11-138)

      4) KMorales LAA...........20.6% 291) Schierholtz SF 8.0% (11-137)

      5) NCruz Tex...................20.3% 290) Aviles KC 8.3% (15-180)

      6) MRamirez LA.............20.3% 289) Lucroy Mil 8.4% (13-154)

      *****************************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) Fantasy Football Tip of the Day: Find out what week first round of your playoffs are; you probably don't want QB/WRs who will have a game in Buffalo/New Jersey/Green Bay that week. You'd rather have games in warm weather or a dome. Make sense?

      12) When the NFL goes to 18 games in 2012, they should take Labor Day weekend completely off from games, give players/coaches/fans little down time to get ready for the season opener, It would also make both exhibition games good ones, since there wouldn't be one less than a week before a regular season game.

      11) Lefthanded batters are 5-39 against Brian Fuentes this season, which is why the Twins went out and got him this week.

      10) Bengals cut Antonio Bryant, eating just under $8M in guaranteed $$ they gave him to sign. They probably figure rookie Shipley and Terrell Owens are a bargain, which cuts their losses. We'll see.

      9) Donovan McNabb has a bum ankle, may not play in opener against the Cowboys, which would leave Rex Grossman as the Washington QB, with John Beck as his backup. Not the ideal situation.

      8) Darrelle Revis' fines for missing first 28 days of camp: $462,644.

      7) Aaron Corp was going to be USC's starting QB last year, but he got a broken leg during summer workouts; he transferred to Richmond, and he is now the Spiders' starting QB. Richmond's stadium was just expanded to seat 8,700 fans, a little different than the LA Coliseum.

      6) LA Angels have used 107 lineups in their first 131 games.

      5) It has been proven that fly balls go an average of ten feet farther when the roof is open at Chase Field in Phoenix. Diamondbacks are thinking about moving the fences back a little, to help their young pitchers.

      4) Houston Astros are 42-36 since June 1; they've got nine rookies on their roster. Manager Mills is doing a solid job, but somehow they have to get some better starting pitching to contend in 2011.

      3) What a race between Albert Pujols/Joey Votto in NL Triple Crown statistics. Keep in mind Votto plays in a much better hitters'park.
Pujols-- .320 batting average, 35 HRs, 95 RBI
Votto-- .325 batting average, 32 HRs, 93 RBI.

      2) Eldrick Woods had a strange tournament at Barclay's: He was -8 thru first 27 holes, +8 thru next 18 holes, then -7 thru the last 27 holes. I'm thinking he's going to have a very big 2011 season.

      1) NFL preseason is now basically over; Week 4 exhibition games are a joke, coaches protect against injuries as much as they can. Some teams are in much better shape than others going into the season. We'll take a look at which ones are which over the next 10 days.........

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Athletics at Yankees: Total opened at 9 but has fallen to 8.5.

Brewers at Reds: Total opened at 8.5 but has climbed to 9.

Mets at Braves: Braves opened as -185 favorites but are now -200 at most books.

Nationals at Marlins: Total opened at 9 but has slipped to 8.5.

Angels at Mariners: Angels opened as +110 dogs but are now a slight favorite at most books.

Padres at Diamondbacks: Total opened at 9 but has jumped to 9.5.

        Weather to watch

Nationals at Marlins: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. Wind blowing in from center field at 14 mph.

        Who's hot

Braves are 40-14 in their last 54 at home.

Pirates are 11-3 in last 14 vs. Cubs.

Reds are 8-1 in their last nine vs. Brewers.

        Who's not

Blue Jays are 5-21 in theirt last 26 at Rays.

Athletics are 1-8 in their last nine at Yankees.

Angels are 1-6 in their last seven.

        Key stat

53 - Team USA's shooting percentage from the field and the 3-point line after two games of the FIBA World Championship. The U.S. is 78-for-145 from the field and 30-for-57 from behind the arc in scoring easy wins over Croatia and Slovenia.

        Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Coorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to tightness in his groin. The team is hopeful that Tulowitzki will return for Monday's game at San Francisco but he is listed as day-to-day. Tulowitzki is batting .319 with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs.

        Game of the day

        Phillies at Dodgers (125, 6.5)

        Notable quotable

"He yelled 'Look out!' at the last second. It landed about two feet from me, and I looked over and I said, 'Hey, I didn't know you cared.' I actually got him to smile a little bit."

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said after disgruntled defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth warned him about an incoming football at training camp. The two have been having a war of words all preseason.

        Tips and notes

The Toronto Blue Jays will shut down right-handed pitcher Brandon Morrow for the rest of the season after his next start as a precautionary measure. The Jays are concerned about the increased number of innings Morrow has thrown this season. His 143 1/3 innings is already 18 1/3 more than he pitched last season between the majors and minors. Morrow, 10-6 with a 4.27 ERA and 174 strikeouts, will make his final start of the season Saturday against the Yankees.

The Texas Rangers are making a change in their rotation that will finally give pitcher Cliff Lee a much-needed day extra of rest Lee. Rich Harden will start Friday's series opener in Minnesota, followed by Colby Lewis and C.J. Wilson. Lee will pitch Tuesday and then be off until Sept. 6 against the Blue Jays, a team he hasn't faced this season. Lee, who has thrown every five days since coming to Texas, is 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA in his past three starts at Toronto.

Maybe it was gamemanships (at least Redskins fans hope so) when coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday that quarterback Donovan McNabb may not be ready to play in the season opener against the rival Dallas Cowboys. McNabb joked that the team told him he had a sprained ankle last week, but the injury may be more serious than first expected. Regardless, McNabb and backup Rex Grossman will not play in the team's preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Trevor Cahill (14-5, 2.43 ERA), Oakland Athletics

It’s a bummer we probably won’t see Stephen Strasburg pitch for the next year and half, but it’s not like the majors is low on supremely talented young hurlers. Take Cahill for instance. The guy looks like he’s about 13 years old but he’s the one making major league hitters look silly.

The A’s are 5-2 in his last seven appearances and the under is 6-0 in his last six starts. Sluggers struggle to get good wood on his pitches too. Cahill has surrendered just two homers in his last 54 innings pitched.

Carlos Zambrano (5-6, 4.64 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Zambrano’s season is one the righty will like to soon forget but at least he’s trying to go out on a positive note. Big Z is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA over his last three starts.

"We didn't really have a lot going against (Zambrano). He pitched good," Nationals manager Jim Riggleman told the Associated Press after his club fell to the Cubs 5-4 last week. "He's a little different style pitcher than he was maybe in past years where he was throwing in the high 90s. Today, he was more in the 90 [mph] area but really worked fast, pitched effectively, had quick innings and got ground balls."

Bettors probably should go crazy after his performance against the Nats (7 1/3 IP, 1 R, 8 K, 1 BB). Don’t forget he walked six in six innings against the Padres in his previous outing.

                Slumping

Joe Saunders (7-14, 4.76 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

Normally, a switch from the American to the National League is a good thing for a struggling pitcher. That hasn’t been the case for this lefty. Saunders is 1-4 since joining the Diamondbacks.

He’s given up four or more runs in each of his last four appearances and the over has cashed in three of those games.

Mitch Talbot (8-11, 4.44 ERA), Cleveland Indians

There isn’t much quality pitching coming from the Indians these days, so it’s tough to really beat up Mitch Talbot. We will anyway.

The 26-year-old Utah native hasn’t given Tribe fans a quality start since June 27. That’s an eight-start stretch.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds (-150, 9)

If it ain't broke don't fix it, even if it's the Big Retro Machine. Reds manager Dusty Baker is breaking that cardinal rule, and he's using all the parts in the box.

Prior to Sunday's 7-5 series-clinching victory over the Cubs, Baker juggled the lineup to allow Drew Stubbs to bat leadoff for the first time since May. He responded by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Outfielder Jay Bruce, who had been batting leadoff, was moved to fifth in the order and hit his fourth homer of the series. Scheduled starter Edinson Volquez has been struggling, so Baker moved him to the bullpen and replaced him with rookie Travis Wood, who battled his way through five innings.

Unlike the Big Red Machine, no-names are helping this team to a five-game lead over the Cardinals.

"In this series, and a lot of this year, it's been that way," Stubbs said. "Obviously we've had the great things from Joey Votto, Brandon [Phillips] and Scott [Rolen] ... but everybody in the lineup has contributed and helped out at some point or another."

The Reds have feasted on the NL Central (except for the Cards) this season and have won eight of their last nine meetings with the Brewers. They are ripping left-handers to the tune of .307 and catch a familiar southpaw in Randy Wolf.

The Reds should have another breakout game tonight; we just can't tell you which player will do it.

                Pick: Reds

Philadelphia Philles at Los Angeles Dodgers (125, 6.5)

There's no place like road for the Phillies, whose change of scenery on this West Coast road trip is doing them good so far in Southern California.

After an embarrassing series sweep at home to the Houston Astros, the Phillies returned the favor to the Padres on Sunday before hopping the short flight to L.A., where the Dodgers are dealing with Manny-gate and the "War of the Roses."

After dropping two straight to the Rockies and seeing Chicago-bound outfielder Manny Ramirez ejected on the first pitch he faced in four days, the Dodgers returned home to a high-profile divorce trial involving its owner that is attracting a circus atmosphere in La-la-land.

The Phillies, meanwhile, are 14-2 against the NL West and are focused on baseball. They send Roy Halladay to the hill to face Hiroki Kuroda, whom they hammered for six earned runs in 1 1/3 innings the last time they met.

                Pick: Phillies

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 30 in Baseball History...

1905 - Ty Cobb makes his major league debut, doubling off Jack CheXXXo, as Detroit defeats New York 5-3. The double is the first of his 4,189 hits, a record topped by Pete Rose in 1985.

1906 - After pitching a shutout in his major league debut, right-hander Joe Doyle of the Highlanders becomes the first player to start out with two shutouts when he beats the Nationals, 5-0. Of his 23 lifetime victories, seven will be shutouts. He is nicknamed Slow because of his time-consuming pace on the mound.

1910 - Tom Hughes of the New York Yankees pitched a no-hitter for 9 1/3 innings before giving up a single to Harry Niles of the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees lost 5-0, with Hughes giving up seven hits in 11 innings.

1912 - Earl Hamilton of the St. Louis Browns pitched a 5-1 no-hitter against the Tigers at Detroit.

1916 - Dutch Leonard of the Boston Red Sox pitched a no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns for a 4-0 victory.

1918 - The New York Giants beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 1-0, in a game that took only 57 minutes to play.

1922 - After hitting number 28 in the first inning, Babe Ruth argues too strongly over a called strike on his next at bat, and he is thrown out of the game. He is suspended for the fifth time of the year and is out for three days.

1965 - Following his doctor's advice, Casey Stengel announces his retirement as manager of the Mets. He will head up Mets scouting in California. The 75-year-old Stengel has been in professional baseball since 1910.

1984 - In a 9-3 win over the Twins, Red Sox slugger Jim Rice grounds into his 33rd double play of the season to break the major league record set by Jackie Jensen in 1954. By season's end, Rice will extend his new record to 36.

1986 - Tommy John, 43, and Joe Niekro, 41, pitched a doubleheader for the New York Yankees against Seattle to become the first 40-plus teammate combo to start a doubleheader since Sept. 13, 1933, when the Chicago Cubs' Sam Jones, 41, and Red Faber, 44, pitched against the Philadelphia Athletics. John lost the opener and Niekro won the second game, 3-0.

1987 - Kirby Puckett goes 6-for-6 with two home runs in Minnesota's 10-6 win over Milwaukee, tying the American League record for hits in a nine-inning game. Combined with yesterday's 4-for-5, two-home run performance, Puckett has a major league-record-tying ten hits in two games.

1988 - Kent Tekulve becomes the second pitcher in major league history to appear in 1,000 games by pitching 2 innings in Philadelphia's 7-5 win over San Francisco.

1995 - Detroit teammates Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell play in their 1,914th game together in a 10-7 loss to the White Sox. The pair tie the American League record for most games appeared in together.

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers [MLB-TV | 10:10 PM ET]

PHILLIES: (-150, O/U 6.5) Philadelphia has played best when few have expected it, against some of the best teams in baseball. The Phillies are coming off an impressive sweep of the San Diego Padres, on the road no less. As a result of their season defining road sweep of the team with the best record in the National League, the Phillies have a 1.5 game lead in the NL Wild Card. Philadelphia has a record of 73-57 SU this year, 2 games behind the Braves in the NL East. Projected Score: 3 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

DODGERS: Los Angeles is 5.5 games back in the National League Wild Cart standings with a SU record of 67-63 SU. The Dodgers might be one of the most perplexing teams in baseball, as they are getting quality starts from their pitching staff, yet have nothing to show for it.
