    Daily Sports Roundup: August 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Packers get a visit from the Colts, the Rangers play host to the Twins, and the PGA Tour begins the FedExCup playoffs at Ridgewood.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League offers up a pair of Week 3 preseason games on Thursday night, with St. Louis at New England, and Indianapolis at Green Bay. Oddsmakers have the Patriots listed as 7.5-point home favorites in that first matchup as they look to improve on their 2-0 exhibition record. The Rams are 1-1 so far in the preseason, beating Cleveland 19-17 last week. The Colts are winless through the first two weeks of the preseason, while the Packers beat Seattle 27-24 last week for their first win of the exhibition schedule. Green Bay has been pegged as the 3.5-point favorite for Thursday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

There are four games on the American League schedule for Thursday, with Oakland at Cleveland, Detroit at Toronto, Baltimore at the White Sox, and Minnesota at Texas. Francisco Liriano (11-7, 3.45 ERA) is set to take on Cliff Lee (10-7, 3.09 ERA) in that Twins/Rangers matchup. Lefthander Liriano last pitched against the White Sox back on August 18, picking up a no-decision after giving up five runs on six hits over his five innings of work. Lefthander Lee was pounded by the Orioles in his last trip to the mound, surrendering eight runs (and four home runs) on 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings of work.

Over in the National League on Thursday it's then Houston at Philadelphia, the Dodgers at Milwaukee, Arizona at San Diego, Florida at the Mets, and St. Louis at Washington. Chris Carpenter (14-4, 2.88 ERA) will get the ball for the Cardinals in that last matchup, while Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will come up from the minors to pitch for the Nationals. Righthander Carpenter beat the Giants in his last trip to the mound, allowing just one run on five hits over 7 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Zimmermann spent most of the year on the disabled list with an elbow injury; he's been pitching in Syracuse.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The PGA Tour kicks off its FedExCup playoffs on Thursday morning with The Barclays at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have been listed as the 12/1 co-favorites to win The Barclays this week, with Rory McIlroy sitting third on that odds list at 14/1. Ernie Els, the FedExCup points leader, is back at 30/1, while Steve Stricker, who sits second on that leaderboard, is pegged at 18/1 odds. Jim Furyk had been listed at 25/1 to win The Barclays; he was disqualified on Wednesday for missing the pro-am. Defending champ Heath Slocum is set at 100/1.

Finally, the first round of the WNBA playoffs continue on Thursday, with Indiana at New York and San Antonio at Phoenix. The Fever (21-13 SU, 18-16 ATS) stumbled into the playoffs on a three-game losing streak, while the Liberty (22-12 SU, 18-15-1 ATS) slipped past Connecticut 88-87 last time out. Oddsmakers have New York pegged as a 3.5-point home favorite for Thursday, with the total at 146.5. The Silver Stars (14-20 SU, 14-18-2 ATS) are riding a two-game winning streak, while the Mercury (15-19 SU, 16-18 ATS) have been tagged with a loss in each of their last two games. The oddsmakers have Phoenix listed as the 8.5-point home favorite for Thursday, with that total at 186.5.

Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Rams at Patriots: Pats opened as -6.5 favorites but have been bet up to -7.5.

Colts at Packers: Packers opened as -4 faves but are down to -3.5. Total opened at 41.5 but has skyrocketed to 44.5.

Astros at Phillies: Total opened at 8 but has climbed to 8.5 at most books.

      Weather to watch

Rams at Patriots: 20 percent chance of rain.

Athetics at Indians: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms. Wind blowing in from left field at 13 mph.

      Who's hot

Twins are 21-8 in their last 29 on road.

Phillies are 23-8 in their last 31 at home.

Padres are 7-2 in their last nine.

Tigers are 5-1 in their last six.

      Who's not

Nationals are 3-13 in their last 16 vs. Cardinals.

Indians are 2-10 in last 12 vs. Athletics and 3-12 in last 15 overall.

      Key stat

4 - The number of double-digit-score MLB games played Wednesday, all of them coming west of the Rocky Mountains. The host Giants (12-11 losers), Rockies (12-10 winners), Angels (12-3 winners) and Diamondbacks (9-3 leaders after seven innings) lit up the scoreboards out West while the 12 games played in the rest of the U.S. and Canada stayed under a 9.5 total. With Arizona still in play, the overall line score was: West, four games, 72 runs; Others, 12 games, 79 runs.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will have one less threat to worry about tonight. Packers cornerback Al Harris has failed a physical and could be headed for the physically unable to peform list. Harris is coming off surgery to repair a torn left ACL that cost him six games last season. He will take another physical next week and if he fails could be headed to the PUP list, which would force him to sit out the first six weeks of the season. Harris, who has 21 career interceptions, will be replaced by Tramon Williams.

      Game of the day

      Twins at Rangers (-150, 8.5)

      Notable quotable

"They told me it was just a 'sprain' ... I want to make sure I do the 'right things' to get myself healthy."

Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb told reporters about his ankle injury while using his fingers to simulate quotation marks. McNabb was poking fun at teammate Albert Haynesworth, who said the team told him he had "headaches" after last Saturday's preseason game.

      Tips and notes

St. Louis Rams' No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford will get his first career start tonight against the New England Patriots since veteran quarterback A.J. Feeley is out with a sprained right thumb. Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said he expects Bradford to play at least the first half and maybe more, depending on how much time the Rams have the ball, but offered no guarantees beyond Thursday night's game. However, a good showing against the Pats could earn him the starting spot, but a more likely scenario involves the Pats reminding him he's just a rookie.

Bobby Jenks may be back in the closer role after the White Sox's bullpen took a 1-2 punch Wednesday by placing relievers Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list. Thornton, who has a strained forearm, has been one of Chicago's best pitchers this season, going 3-4 with a 2.66 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings. Putz is 6-5 this season with a 2.68 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 47 innings. Jenks has 24 saves this season but has blown three and been erratic at times.

The Florida Marlins may be shaking up their lineup by placing rookie Cameron Maybin in the leadoff spot. Maybin, a top prospect who has gone up and down between the Marlins and Triple-A this season, batted seventh Tuesday and had two hits. He is expected to see considerable playing time the rest of the seasonMaybin is hitting .231 with five homers and 19 RBI in 186 at-bats with the Marlins and .338 with Triple-A New Orleans. Hanley Ramirez has been batting first for the Marlins and could slide to third if Maybin is moved into the leadoff spot.

        Thursday's six-pack

-- Jim Furyk was DQd from Barclay's tourney this week; he overslept the pro-am, which means an automatic DQ. Not the greatest rule.

-- Oakland Raiders are starting a 6-8, 315-pound center, who played at a D-II college. Raiders are supposed to be much-improved this year.

-- Bad news for hockey fans; Donald Fehr is new head of the Players' Association in the NHL. Fehr used to be head of the baseball players' union. Hockey isn't in a position for any more work stoppages.

-- 22-year old Trevor Cahill is youngest Oakland pitcher since Vida Blue in '71 to record 14 wins in a season. A's have solid pitching.

-- Weird afternoon of baseball; Braves led 10-1 in third inning but lost in Denver; Giants trailed 10-1 in 5th inning at home, tied the game, but lost in extra innings to the Reds. Interesting day.

-- Braves are first NL team since 1958 to have all nine starters, even the pitcher, get an extra base hit.

Thursday's List of 13: Quick thoughts for a summer Thursday

        13) I don't know of one NFL fan who isn't in favor of the new 18-game schedule, which looks like will happen for the 2012 season.

        12) Carl Crawford should sign with the Astros this winter; he's from the Houston area, the leftfield boxes are already called Crawford Boxes (the street outside the dome in that area is Crawford Ave) and its a ballpark where he'll put up bigger numbers.

        11) US hammered Greece by 28 in final tuneup for world tournament in Turkey next week, but one red flag: Other than Eric Gordon, the team was just 3-21 behind the arc. Gordon was 4-7. Teams pack in their zone defense against American teams, figuring we won't shoot the ball well.

        10) Spain got some very easy baskets against the US team with simple back cuts; theres lot more movement without the ball in an international basketball game, which is part of why it is more fun to watch than the NBA game. NBA players seldom see both their man and the ball.

        9) Its going to be weird seeing Florida State without Bobby Bowden on the sidelines. It'll be almost like not having Chief Osceola there.

        8) If I owned the Brewers or Indians, it wouldn't sit well that my team let CC Sabathia walk; the guy is terrific and he is durable, and he is very much worth whatever he gets paid.

        7) Matt Leinart is one more disappointing season away from being a QB in either the CFL, UFL or Arena League. I'll be very surprised if Cards win more games than they lose this season.

        6) Still hard to imagine Nebraska playing in the Big 11, which they will be after this season.

        5) Michigan Wolverines signed a point guard from Columbus, OH; hard to imagine Big Blue gets a lot of players from under Ohio State's nose.

        4) The longest eight miles in sports has to be the distance between the ballparks in Bronx/Queens; Bronx Bombers have huge resources, but are also run wisely and have expectations of success. Mets seem to have a cloud of gloom hanging over them; their fans expect the worst. People who run the franchise act like they're running a small market team.

        3) There are 120 college football teams in Division I; 70 of them will be in a bowl game this season. Of other 50, my guess is at least 17 teams will have new coaches next season. Bowl teams that have losing seasons might fire their coaches too.

        2) I'd be curious what differences there are, if any, between golf balls in the 60's/70's and golf balls now. Are today's golf balls juiced?

        1) The issue of People Magazine with Ms Privacy (Elin Nordgren) in it is going to cost 50 cents more than normal, even though both sides are denying she got paid for the article.

What bettors need to know: Thursday's NFL action

St. Louis at New England (-7.5, 37.5)

          Bradford's big break?

Sam Bradford gets the start for the St. Louis Rams thanks to A.J. Feeley’s injured thumb.

It will be the first time Bradford has played with Steven Jackson in the backfield and behind a healthy offensive line. However, the Rams are going to be very careful with Jackson until Week 1. He had four carries for 20 yards in last week’s 19-17 win over the Cleveland Browns.

This is Bradford’s big audition to get the start in Week 1 and after two tough preseason showings already, he needs to make some things happen. Bradford was 6-for-13 for 57 yards while taking four sacks in his first appearance against the Vikings and then went 6-of-14 for only 24 yards against the Browns last week.

          New England’s RB stable

The Pats are trying to figure out some sort of running back hierarchy in the preseason, so expect to see a lot more of the rushing attack Thursday.

They currently have five running backs competing for carries and the Pats want to have a good idea of who can do what before Week 1. If the Pats know what their running back depth chart looks like, they aren’t telling anybody. Expect them to spread the carries around Thursday.

          The starter report

New England will give its starters more time this week, but don’t expect the offense to be overworked. Tom Brady looks like he’s in mid-season form already, leading the first team to three touchdowns in five possessions. They don’t need much of a dress rehearsal.

Different story for the Rams, though. With Feely out, St. Louis is expected to keep Bradford and most of the first-stringers in the game through at least two quarters.

          The line

The 7.5-point spread and the 37.5-point total are holding steady for the moment. New England is 2-0 straight up and against the spread (ATS) so far this preseason, while St. Louis is 1-1 straight up and ATS.

Indianapolis at Green Bay (-3.5, 44.5)

Peyton Manning doesn’t look like he needs much more work to be ready for Game 1. He has completed 16 of 25 preseason passes with one touchdown.

Expect to see a lot from Anthony Gonzalez and Donald Brown. Gonzalez is looking to regain his spot with the first-team offense after missing all of last season with a knee injury and has some work to do after Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon emerged as threats with Manning in his absence.

The Colts are going to keep Joseph Addai as fresh as possible until these games start meaning something. That means more time for Donald Brown, provided he can block well enough to keep Manning clean.

          Rodgers’ time is now

It looks as though Aaron Rodgers may finally be able to step out of Brett Favre’s shadow once and for all. He has completed 20 of 24 preseason passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions and his passer rating checks in at 154.0 so far. Tight end Jermichael Finley is becoming one of Rodgers’ favorite targets, grabbing three 12-yard passes and a touchdown during Green Bay’s long drive against the Seattle Seahawks.

          The starter report

Manning and the first-string offense are expected to play into the second half, though it’s always hard to know for sure with the Colts. If Indy puts a bunch of points up early, they’ll have no reason to keep the first stringers once they find a rhythm. Same goes for the Packers. The No. 1 offensive unit will play at least a few series, but it’ll all depend after that.

Neither of these teams is far from regular season form.

          The line

This line opened at Green Bay -3.5 with the total at 44 points. It hasn’t moved much since then at most shops, though you can find -4 lines and 44.5 totals around as of this writing.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays (-140, 8)

Detroit outfielder Johnny Damon opted against returning to his former squad, the Boston Red Sox, on Wednesday to remain with the team that signed him this season.

The young Tigers get more in return than his .270 batting average and solid fielding. They also get a strong boost of confidence from a veteran that believes in them and backed it up with his actions.

"Initially I thought long and hard about it, but after going around and talking to a bunch of my teammates, they want me here and they feel like we can make a strong push, at least make this (AL) Central race interesting," Damon said. "That's why I'm going to stay. I've said all along I love playing for Detroit, for the city, for the fans."

The Tigers, who have won five of their last six, may not be able to erase a double-digit games deficit in the AL Central but they will make a good run at it. Look for Detroit to come together in light of Damon's words and gesture.

Detroit sends Max Scherzer to the hill and he has been its ace over the past month, posting a 1.35 ERA over his last five starts. Toronto counter with Ricky Romero, who was shelled in his last outing against the Red Sox.

                  Pick: Detroit

Houston Astros at Philadelphia Philles (-165, 8.5)

These two teams' legs are dragging after playing a 16-inning marathon on Tuesday, but not as badly as their arms.

Tuesday's affair saw the two teams combine to use 15 pitchers, not including Phillies starting pitcher Roy Oswalt's insertion in the outfield. Both sides enter today's series finale woefully unarmed.

It doesn't help that Phillies' starter Kyle Kendrick hasn't gone more than seven innings in his last nine starts. In fact, he went just 5 2/3 in allowing five earned runs in his last outing and lasted only 3 1/3 while also giving up five runs on Aug. 10.

Houston's Wandy Rodriguez has last six innings or longer in his last four starts but the Astros are 0-4 in those games. W-Rod allowed only five earned runs in that span but the bullpen gave up a total of 18. You call that relief?

Look for both teams to be sluggish on the mound and slugging at the plate.

                  Pick: Over

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Chris Carpenter (14-4, 2.88 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have won seven of Carpenter’s last eight starts. The big right-hander hasn’t allowed more than three runs in an outing since a 4-3 loss at Colorado on July 8 and has gone at least seven innings in every start since the All-Star break. Carpenter is also 5-1 lifetime against the Nationals with a 3.56 ERA.

Wandy Rodriguez (9-12, 4.00 ERA), Houston Astros

Rodriguez hasn’t won in four straight starts, but don’t point the finger at him. The last time he allowed more than two runs in a start was back on July 19 and he has lowered his ERA from 5.11 to 4.00 since then. Rodriguez took a 6-3 loss to the Marlins in his last outing, allowing just two earned runs over six innings while striking out 10.

                  Slumping

Justin Masterson (4-12, 5.33 ERA), Cleveland Indians

Masterson has just two wins since the middle of June and allowed five runs over six innings against the Tigers in his last start, a 6-0 loss. Reports out of Cleveland indicate that the Indians could send Masterson to the bullpen once he gets up to about 165 innings. He has thrown 145 1/3 innings this year and moving him to relief could open up a spot for Indians prospect Carlos Carrasco.

                  This Day in Baseball
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 26 in Baseball History...

1898 - Cleveland plays its final home game of the season and only the fourth at League Park since July ninth. With 83 of its final 87 games on the road, the Spiders have earned nicknames such as the Nomads, Exiles, Misfits and Wanderers.

1912 - Walter Johnson's 16-game winning streak ends under rules that have since been changed. In the second game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Browns, he relieves Tom Hughes with one out and two on in the seventh inning of a 2-2 game. Both runners score and the Nationals lose 4-3. The two runs are charged to Johnson, not Hughes.

                  1916 - Philadelphia's Joe Bush pitched a no-hitter, beating Cleveland, 5-0.

1930 - Hack Wilson hits his 44th home run, breaking Chuck Klein one-year-old National League record, as the Cubs defeat the Pirates 7-5.

1939 - Ebbets Field is the site of the first telecast of a major league baseball game. The Reds play the Dodgers in a doubleheader. Red Barber handles the broadcasts over W2XBS. The Dodgers take the first game 6-2, and the Reds take the second 5-1.

1947 - Brooklyn's Dan Bankhead debuted with a home run in his first major-league plate appearance, but didn't fare well on the mound. In 3 1/3 innings of relief, he gave up 10 hits and six earned runs to the Pirates. Pittsburgh won, 16-3.

1961 - Roger Maris hit his 51st homer of the year against the Kansas City Athletics. The 51 homers were the most ever by a player at this point in the season.

1967 - Dean Chance pitches a 2-1 no-hitter, and the Twins sweep Cleveland to take the American League lead. The victory gives Chance a 17-9 record and lowers his ERA to 2.42.

1972 - Leo Durocher, formerly of the Cubs, replaces Harry Walker as manager of the Astros. It is only the second time someone has managed two National League teams in the same season. The first was in 1948, when Durocher piloted the Dodgers and the Giants.

1987 - Paul Molitor goes 0-for-4 in Milwaukee's 1-0, 10-inning win over the Indians, ending his hitting streak at 39 consecutive games. His streak was the seventh longest in major league history and the longest in the American League since Joe DiMaggio's 56-game streak in 1941.

1990 - In his first game after six weeks on the disabled list, Bo Jackson homers in his first at-bat to tie a major league record with four consecutive homers.

1992 - In the first matchup of National League knuckleballers in ten years, Pittsburgh's Tim Wakefield outduels Tom Candiotti of the Dodgers. The last time knuckleballs floated to batters on both teams came when Phil and Joe Niekro squared off in 1982.

Indiana Fever at New York Liberty (-3.5, 146.5)

There's no place like home, especially when you hang your hat at Madison Square Garden.

That's where the Liberty open their playoff series with the fever tonight, just nine days after they clobbered Indiana 78-57 to overtake first place in the East.

The red-hot Liberty have won 11 of their final 12 overall after beating Connecticut 88-87 in overtime Sunday to secure home-court advantage in the first round.

"Home-court advantage was important to us," Liberty guard Leilani Mitchell told reporters. "We wanted to end on a good note and have some momentum going into the playoffs."

New York has been especially hot at home, winning eight in a row at the Garden, while the Fever dropped their final three games of the regular season.

The Liberty are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 and it won't take much to make it 9-3.

                      Pick: New York
