NCAAF opening line report: Week 1 lines on the move

When we last saw coach Mike Reilly and Oregon State, it was not pretty. The Beavers spent a comfy week in Sin City, then went out and did what most people do when they go to that lively Nevada town: Lose big.

Oregon State, in the Las Vegas Bowl last December, was pounded by BYU, 44-20.

Without question, that loss and all that went with it — not being prepared for a Mountain West opponent, not showing up in primetime, not being able to tackle — was in many an oddsmaker’s head this summer, when the line for the Beavers’ Saturday opener with TCU was established.

Think about it. OK, OK, the Mountain West is a great conference, and TCU is the cream of the crop. But a Pac-10 team catching nearly two touchdowns?

“It’s a bit high,” said Tony Sinisi, of Las Vegas Sports Consultants. “The Pac-10 is really wide open this year, and Oregon State could win it. Here is a team that could be in the upper echelon and get to the Rose Bowl, and here they are, right off the bat, getting 12.5 points.”

And it’s even hit 13.5 in some of the offshore books.

“It may get even higher,” said Jay Rood, of the MGM Sports Book. “It’s just that everyone in the public remembers what TCU did last year, and let’s face it, Oregon State is just usually not on anyone’s radar in the early going.”

Food for thought, as you begin your Week 1 NCAA card. Anything can happen certainly, but if these two oddsmakers are any indication, a bet on the Beavers might not be a bad idea.

“Listen,” Rood said, “this team can make the Rose Bowl. If you’re going to give me a team that can make the Rose Bowl, and 12.5 points early on? Yeah, I’d side with Oregon State.”

And so with the marathon that is college football set for takeoff on Thursday, let’s look at some other marquee movers and shakers on the Last Vegas Week 1 boards:

Marshall Thundering Herd at Ohio State Buckeyes (-28.5)

Of the big boys in college football, the Buckeyes are one of the few that don’t have a line of 30 or more. It opened in the neighborhood of four touchdowns, and really isn’t moving much.

“We’re at 28.5, and some of the Ohio State tradition is built into that,” Rood said. “They don’t traditionally bury teams, and if they’re up 21, they may sit a lot of players. Their goal is to be national champions, not beat Marshall by 40.

“Plus, Marshall can score a bit. The backdoor looms large in this one.”

Southern Miss Golden Eagles at South Carolina Gamecocks (-13.5)

The line for this one opened at 14 most everywhere and there’s been little action on it so far. But this is a Thursday ESPN game, so closer to kickoff, the volume will rise.

“Southern Miss is a little bit of a mystery,” Sinisi said. “But this is supposed to be one of the better South Carolina teams, under Steve Spurrier. That said, he’s yet to get it done there, so who knows what to expect. It is shaping up, though, to be a nice South Carolina team this year.”

Pittsburgh Panthers at Utah Utes (-2.5)

Here, you have the higher ranked team getting points. An early-season trap?

“I expect,” Rood said, “to get heavy action on Pitt closer to gametime.”

But the sharps seem to like the hosts.

“Utah is a strong team, and they don’t sneak up on anyone anymore,” Rood said. “It’s a great home field, and the early consensus is that Utah is going to take care of business.”

Southern California Trojans at Hawaii Warriors (+21)

It opened at 19, so an early jump on the new-look Trojans.

“It appears justified,” Sinisi said. “This is a mismatch. There will be a wait-and-see approach with Southern Cal down the line. But in this one, this line is where it needs to be, and it’ll probably rise.”

UConn Huskies at Michigan Wolverines (-3)

It opened at 2.5 and has seen only slight movement, which is a surprise to some.

“Here, there’s value in the home team,” Rood said. “There’s been a lot of press and publicity, and a lot of experts are picking UConn, but you can never discount Michigan playing in the Big House on Opening Day. Things may have changed a bit, but putting on that Michigan uniform still means something.

“Let’s put it this way. If you have a kid who has to choose between playing at Michigan or UConn, where’s he gonna go?”

UCLA Golden Bears at Kansas State Wild Cats (-3)

This opened at -2 for UCLA, so a huge movement toward the hosts.

“UCLA had some injuries in camp, and Kansas State has some appeal as a home team early on,” Sinisi said. “This is a tough trip for UCLA.”

Purdue Boilermakers at Notre Dame (-11.5)

It opened at 11 with some new-coach mojo, and the trend will continue toward Brian Kelly’s Irish.

“They’re asking a lot out of Notre Dame this early,” Rood said. “But I don’t see that stopping. I anticipate even more Notre Dame money later in the week.”

Washington Huskies at BYU Cougars (-3)

It opened at 3 and is holding steady.

“It’s an intriguing matchup, with one of the top quarterbacks in the country, Jake Locker, on the road,” Sinisi said. “And I know it sounds like a broken record, but these Mountain West teams and sites are just real, real tough. BYU can play with anyone.”

LSU Tigers at UNC Tar Heels (Off)

It opened at LSU -1, but many expect a spike in North Carolina money, once any possible disciplinary action is or isn’t levied against the Tar Heels.

“We’re off the board right now,” said Jay Kornegay, of the Las Vegas Hilton, “due to the possible suspensions.”

              Stay tuned.

Boise State Broncos (-3) vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

It opened at 2 in most places, and those blue-blooded Boise backers have jumped on it early and often.

“This is their game of the year,” Sinisi said. “If they’re going to win the national title, it starts here, and the tone is set. This line may rise because of that, but don’t forget Virginia Tech. Regionally, this is their neck of the woods, in Atlanta, and the defense appears like it could be one of Frank Beamer’s best.”

                  Week 1

                  Thursday's games
South Carolina is 10-7 as home favorite under Spurrier; they are playing Georgia next, figure to hold back some here, but Southern Miss isn't a chump squad- they're 4-2 as road dog under Fedora, but were also 7-6 in last two seasons despite great turnover ratios of +10/+13. Eagles lost all but one starter on OL; that figures to be problem vs stout SEC defense. Carolina is 1-3 as a favorite the week before playing Georgia.

Marshall lost 52-10 at Va Tech, 24-7 at West Virginia LY; they lost at Wisconsin 51-14 in '08. Herd was 9-17 as road dog under their previous coach; this is first game for new coach Holliday. Ohio State is 33-18 as a favorite since '05, 21-15 as home fave since '04; they've got nine starters back on offense with third-year starting QB and four starters back on OL- they covered three of last four openers.

Iowa State lost seven starters on defense; they've got senior QB with 23 career starts and four starters back on OL (two seniors start). Cyclones are 17-9 as home favorite since '00, 21-12-1 vs spread in non-conference games during that time. Northern Illinois is 11-6 as road dog since 2005; they've got 8 starters back on defense, a junior QB with 18 starts and an OL with four junior starters and one senior.

Utah has had lot of distractions in offseason with shift to Pac-10 coming up; Utes lost seven starters on defense; they've got both QBs back from LY, and four starters back on OL. Utes are 10-8-1 as home favorite last four years. Pittsburgh lost its QB and three OL starters from LY; they're 10-3 as underdog last three years, 7-2 on road. Top four rushers return for Pitt, but with OL lot less experienced, will they run ball as well?

USC has only 67 scholarship players, a new coach, soph QB and ton of questions; Trojans are 3-9 as road favorite last two years. Who knows if they're going to be any good. Hawai'i is 13-14 since June Jones left, 4-4 as home dog. Warriors have junior QB with 8 starts, but lost four of five starters on OL (24 career starts)- they've got 7 starters back on defense.

Middle Tennessee's QB is suspended this game (off-field stuff) so the Blue Raiders are in disarray; they're 10-4 vs spread in non-league games, 2-2 as home dog under Stockstill. Minnesota has nine starters back on its offense, but lost nine on defense; they're 5-9 as favorite under Brewster, 1-2 on road. Gophers have senior QB and all five starters back on OL, so they better score to protect an almost all-new defense.

Home side won both Florida Atlantic-UAB games; Blazers lost 49-34 in Miami in '08, then crushed Owls 56-29 LY, running ball for 330 yards. UAB is 4-1 as favorite under Calloway, 3-1 at home; they've got new QB, but have nine starters back on defense, four back on OL. FAU has nine starters back on defense, but lost nine on offense, including all five on OL- their QB has five career starts, but is a senior. FAU is 9-19-1 as a road underdog the last five years.

                  Friday's game
Toledo (+23) lost 41-16 at Arizona in '08; Rockets are 10-3 as home dog the last decade. Home teams covered 18 of their last 26 lined games- they have have soph QB who started three games LY, but have four starters back on OL (three juniors, two seniors). Arizona has four starters back on OL, very good junior QB (2,486 PY LY), but they're 1-4-1 as a road favorite last three years, and lost seven starters from LY on defense.

What bettors need to know: Pittsburgh at Utah
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Panthers at Utah Utes (-3, 49.5)

Opening night of the 2010 College football season features a matchup of two ranked foes when No. 15 Pittsburgh invades No. 24 Utah in a game nationally televised on the VERSUS network at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Let’s see how they matchup.

                    Wanny be’s

Thursday’s game looks to be a contrast of styles. Pittsburgh’s conservative head coach Dave Wannstedt figures to protect new quarterback Tino Sunseri with a straight-ahead ground game, while Utah coach Kyle Whittingham looks to spread things out with his wide-open offense.

Pitt running back Dion Lewis is the leading returning rusher in the nation. As a result, he is among the early contenders for the Heisman Trophy. He could help that cause with a huge game this evening.

The 5-foot-8 scatback will look to carry the workload. He also hopes to make NFL scouts mindful of LeSean McCoy, a former Panther.

The last three seasons, Lewis and McCoy combined to rush for 4,615 yards. McCoy gained 1,488 yards as a sophomore and 1,328 as a freshman before going to the NFL.

"Dion Lewis is in the mix for 30 carries (a game during the season), in my mind," Wannstedt told reporters.

Whittingham compares Lewis to Oregon State star running back Jacquizz Rodgers, a third-team All-American who rushed for 1,440 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. The 5-foot-7 Rodgers, like Lewis, was considered to be undersized coming out of high school.

"He (Lewis) is quick, fast, not great size but he is the same type of back that Jacquizz is," Whittingham told the media. "He has great vision and balance. He is a powerful runner in regards to his size."

A revamped offensive line features a pair of new starting tackles in Myles Caragein and Chas Alecxih. They aren't rookies, though, as both played a lot for Pitt last season.

The Panthers led the nation in sacks a season ago and could do so again in 2010 behind returning defensive ends Jabaal Sheard and the 2009 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, Greg Romeus.

Together they form the best pair of defensive end tandem in college football.

                    Ute need to know

Utah hasn't lost at home in close to three seasons (18 wins in a row) and is 7-0 lifetime against current Big East teams.

The Utes also own the nation’s longest current bowl win streak at nine.

Quarterback Jordan Wynn, the MVP of last year’s Poinsettia Bowl, is back. So is running back Eddie Ware, who rushed for 1,000 yards in 10 games.

Matt Asiata, who led the Mountain West Conference in rushing through the first four games before a knee injury ended his season last year, joins Ware in the backfield.

Three of Utah's top four receivers from a season ago are now gone, including 1,000-yard man David Reed.

They do return twelve starters in all, including six all-MWC performers.

                    Going going…

Utah will be off to join the new Pac-12 in 2011, leaving the Mountain West after this season.

Brigham Young and TCU will once again battle Utah for conference honors this season as the trio squares off for the final time in the MWC.

"All three have contributed to reshaping the perception of the Mountain West Conference by each finishing in the final Top 25 for the past two seasons," said Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson. "Actually, most of the western media have now anointed them the big three when discussing the league."

BYU had undefeated conference records in 2006 and 2007, while posting 10-win seasons in four consecutive years. Texas Christian had four 11-win seasons and finally got a BCS bid last season, losing to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. If you add up all the records since 2003 (and TCU since 2005), the trio has won 75 percent of their games, going 180-59.

"I'm sad to see Utah leave. We've had great games. It's been a great rivalry," TCU coach Gary Patterson told the media. "I think they brought a lot to the conference." The Utes were the most successful over the past seven seasons, winning 69 games, including two BCS bowl games (Fiesta and Sugar).

                    Beasts

The Big East has been impressive in season openers, especially when on the road, going 51-25 ATS.

If that same team won eight or more games the previous season they have gone 21-6 straight up and 19-6 against the spread.

                    Leasts

Big East dogs are 0-3 straight up and against the spread in three previous meetings against the Mountain West.

They have been outscored 107-42 in the three contests.

                    Coaching tug o‘ war

Wannstedt is 15-11 against the spread as a visitor with the Panthers, including 6-3 in non-conference clashes.

Whittingham is 25-5 straight up and 15-12-1 against the spread in home games with the Utes, but only 2-5-1 outside the conference.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles at South Carolina Gamecocks [ESPN | 7:30 PM ET]

GOLDEN EAGLES: Southern Mississippi is a team that many experts are picking to be a surprise conference winner. The Golden Eagles are attempting to become more of a defensive team, truly a new identity for a team known for throwing the football around offensively. The Golden Eagles are projected to finish 2nd in the East division of Conference USA. Southern Miss ended the year with a loss to MTSU in the New Orleans Bowl, finishing the season with a 7-6 record. Coach Larry Fedora has spent all offseason working on this new hyper defense. The Golden Eagles are also going to have to get accustomed to life without RB Damion Fletcher in the backfield. Fletcher was a record breaking running back for Southern Mississippi, and someone the Golden Eagles could look to to fill a leadership role. Southern Miss has struggled against the SEC of late, going 2-6 ATS against the brutal conference. The Golden Eagles have also played to the Under in 8 of their past 11 games against SEC schools.

Golden Eagles are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 road games.
Under is 8-3 in Golden Eagles last 11 vs. SEC.

                      Key Injuries - None Reported.

                      Projected Score: 13

GAMECOCKS: (-13.5, O/U 46) South Carolina came into this season with high expectations, which makes all the off field distractions all the more disappointing. On top of the off field drama, coach Spurrier has also made some news when he announced that the starting QB position would be filled by 2 QB's, not just Stephen Garcia. Freshman Connor Shaw is also going to get his reps, as he is the CO-starter. The Gamecocks are at home for their first 3 games this year, highlighted by a game against Georgia next week. South Carolina is expected to finish as high as 3rd in the SEC East division, so expectations are running high. South Carolina is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Thursday night games, so clearly this team enjoys being in the national spotlight. Defensively, the Gamecocks have shined against unfamiliar teams. South Carolina has played to the Under in 8 of their past 11 non-conference games.

Gamecocks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in September.
Under is 8-3 in Gamecocks last 11 non-conference games.

                      Key Injuries - None Reported.

USC Trojans at Hawaii Rainbows [ESPN | 11:00 PM ET]

TROJANS: (-21.5, O/U 54) USC might have the biggest question mark placed on them of any ranked team in College Football this season. How is this team going to fare, considering they are banned from postseason play and coming off a season in which they had 4 losses. Combine these past 2 questions with the simple fact the Trojans have a new coach at the helm, and it adds up to the biggest question mark of the season. The good news is that QB Matt Barkley has a year under his belt, gaining huge experience in last years struggles. Defensively, the Trojans must replace 4 starters in their secondary alone, led by All-American Taylor Mays. USC always has a top 5 recruiting class nationally, so the talent is there, they simply don't have the name recognition. RB Allen Bradford is expected to carry the load offensively as well, as the Senior running back is simply tough to bring down. The Trojans are looking to play better on the road this season, as they are 1-8 ATS in their past 9 road games overall. The Trojans have played to the under in 7 of their past 8 games in September.

Trojans are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 road games.
Under is 7-1 in Trojans last 8 games in September.

                      Key Injuries - None Reported.

                      Projected Score: 34

RAINBOWS: Hawaii is very excited to be playing against a team like USC, a school ranked 14th in the AP Top 25 poll. Hawaii has always been a proud program, especially at home. Unfortunately, last year was a season that turned into a disaster, as the Rainbows finish the season with a record of 6-7 and missed becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2005. The Rainbows are known for their pass happy offense, and this year's edition shouldn't disappoint. QB Bryant Moniz had a full training camp this season, as opposed to last year where he was thrust into the starting lineup in the middle of the season. Moniz has a great arm, and has very capable WR's to throw too. WR Greg Salas might be the best WR you've never heard of, as he finished 4th in in the FBS with 122.3 YPG last year. Including in the 122.3 YPG were a total of 106 receptions last year for Salas. Defensively, the Rainbows will try to limit the Trojans with regards to big plays. The Trojans have scored at least 61 PTS in each of the past 3 games with Hawaii, so clearly the Rainbows are faced with a tall order.

Rainbows are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 vs. Pac-10.
Over is 5-1 in Warriors last 6 non-conference games.

                      Key Injuries - None Reported.

Projected Score: 20 (SIDE of the Day)

                        What bettors need to know
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Wildcats at Toledo Rockets (+16.5, 60.5)

Love it or hate it, college football on a night traditionally reserved for high schools is here to stay. And the first Friday feature game has the Arizona Wildcats traveling across country, to take on the Toledo Rockets (ESPN 8 p.m. ET).

                        Rose-colored glasses

The beginning of the Mike Stoops era at Arizona wasn’t pretty. It began with back-to-back 3-8 seasons which were then followed by two mediocre campaigns. And, as is the norm in college football, the “Fire Mike Stoops” websites and Facebook groups emerged. Thankfully the administration in Tucson stuck with their head coach.

The Wildcats ended their 10-year bowl slump in 2008 and then put in an impressive 2009, which saw them beat USC on the road. In fact, were it not for a couple of close defeats, one of them being a heartbreaking double-OT loss to Oregon, they would have won the Pac-10 title.

Now in his seventh year, more is expected from Mike Stoops than a bowl birth. Arizona is the only team in the Pac-10 that hasn’t gone to the Rose Bowl and 2010 looks like the school’s best shot in its 111-year history.

Several key starters return on offense including junior quarterback Nick Foles and senior running back Nic Grigsby. Last year, Foles had the second highest completion rate in the Pac-10 at 63.4 percent, while Grigsby added 10 pounds of muscle in the summer and has been impressive in training camp.

The big concern for the Wildcats is at defense, where they only return four starters. However, a talented group of recruits will replace those spots, one of them being high-profile JuCo transfer Derek Earls who will start at middle linebacker.

Glass half full or completely empty?

A visit to the Glass Bowl won’t be easy for the Wildcats. Of the last six BCS schools to visit Toledo, only one has come out with a victory. The Rockets return All-American freshman receiver Eric Page, who led all first year players in the NCAA with 82 receptions and 1159 yards.

Unfortunately, he appears to be the Rockets’ only threat on offense which even second-year head coach Tim Beckman admitted.

“The toughest thing for Eric is we don’t have the weapons around him, he is the one that’s returning, .. He’s got to play well for us to be successful,” Beckman told reporters.

Tossing him the ball, will be new starter Austin Dantin. The sophomore saw some playing time last year when Aaron Opelt was injured. However, Beckman did suggest earlier this week that he won’t be the only one taking snaps.

“You will see all the quarterbacks in the Arizona game,” Beckman said. “David (Pasquale) got his package that we do and Terrance Owens is still in the hunt for taking snaps.”

Whether or not that is part of the gameplan or simply anticipation of a blowout is up for interpretation.

For Toledo to remain competitive in this game it will need to spread the ball around effectively to keep the Arizona secondary honest. Future NFL safety Robert Golden will have his eye on Page for the whole game, so it is important for one or two players on Toledo’s offense to surprise.

                        Line and trends

The line opened up at -14.5 in favor of the Wildcats and has since moved up to -16.5 at some sportsbooks. Arizona has been a favorite on the road six times in the last two years and it is only 1-4-1 ATS in those games.

Toledo last played Arizona in Tucson, where it failed to cover the 23-point spread in a 41-16 loss. Three times last year the Rockets were listed as underdogs by 10 points or more, and in all three games they failed to cover the spread.

Arizona does have the talent to win this game by more than two touchdowns. However, Page will most likely play the entire game regardless of the score. This will no doubt play a key factor in a possible backdoor cover, if the game is an early blowout.

                        Rain, rain, rain

A shootout is expected with the total at 60.5 but weather will have an impact in this game. Heavy rains and thunderstorms are in the forecast.

Arizona Wildcats at Toledo Rockets [8:00 PM ET]

WILDCATS: (-16, O/U 60.5) Optimism is high in Arizona, as people around the college think this team can compete for a Pac-10 championship. The Wildcats are expected to have a dynamic offense this year, both on the ground and through the air. QB Nick Foles is the face of this program, as he has a full training camp under his belt. Despite skepticism last year, Foles threw for 2,486 YDS last season. Foles is expected to be amongst the best QB's not only in the Pac-10, but also the entire country. The ground game is led by dynamic RB Nic Grigsby, as he led a group of RB's that ran for nearly 1,800 YDS last season. Arizona will only go as far as their defense takes them, and there is uncertainty with this unit. Arizona doesn't have the defense it's had in the past, and is replacing 7 starters this season. The Wildcats have struggled in the past on the road, as they are only 2-7 ATS in their past 9 road games overall.

Wildcats are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games.
Under is 6-1 in Wildcats last 7 games overall.

                          Key Injuries - None Reported.

                          Projected Score: 34

ROCKETS: Toledo is saying all the right things, as they are in the process of rebuilding their team and forming a new identity. Head Coach Tim Beckman is entering his 2nd year with the Rockets, and he's focused on winning the battle of the lines. Beckman is happy with the state of his offensive lineman, so he is really focusing on the state of his defensive line. The good news for Beckman is that he returns nearly his entire team defensively from last season. Offensively, Toledo is known for a pass happy offense that enjoys lighting up the scoreboard. This season is expected to be a bit different, as the Rockets are breaking in a new QB. A few different QB's are trying to earn the starting spot, and whoever wins the battle is likely to throw often to WR Eric Page. The Rockets are looking for some help from their crowd tonight, as they take on a very good Arizona team. Tonight's game is the only home game in September for the Rockets.

Rockets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Over is 16-7 in Rockets last 23 home games.

                          Key Injuries - None Reported.

Projected Score: 24 (SIDE of the Day)

                            Highlighted games

Michigan State was up 35-0 at half vs Western Michigan LY, wound up winning 49-14 (TY was 602-211). Spartans are just 15-27-1 as favorite at home last nine years. Western is 2-7 as road dog last two years; they have new QB but four starters back on OL. Broncos were 0-2 vs Big 11 teams last year, losing 31-7 at Michigan, 23-19 at Indiana.

Missouri won last five games vs Illinois by 37-24 average; this is last in a border series that is fairly intense. Illini is 13-6 as dog since '06- they're breaking in new QB, which is OK, since old one was awful. Mizzou has covered 13 of last 22 as favorite, 14 of last 20 games outside the Big 12.

Underdog is 14-6 vs spread in last 20 Colorado-Colo State games, with four of last five decided by six or less points; Buffs covered one of last five as a favorite- they've got whole OL back and two experienced QBs, one of whom is trying to save his dad's job. Rams are 7-7 as dog under Fairchild; 14 of their top 16 tacklers from LY are back.

Vanderbilt's coach quit this summer; they're 7-14 as home dog since '04, 9-14-1 vs spread in non-SEC games since '02. Northwestern is 1-3 as a road favorite under Fitzgerald, 6-12 in non-league games since '05. NW is breaking in new QB but has four starters back on OL. Vandy lost four of its five OL starters from LY.

Miami transfer Marve is new QB (11 starts at the U); they've got no senior starters on OL. Kelly makes Irish debut; Notre Dame is 11-23 as home fave since '03, but you can't imagine a bigger upgrade in coaching than Weis to this guy.

UConn was 5-0 as road dog LY, after being 5-13 fron '03-'08; Huskies are 25-14 SU last three years, have senior QB, four starters back on OL. Michigan is 8-16 last two years (-22 in turnovers), 7-13 vs spread in last 20 non-league games. Huge game in Big House; Wolverines are 12-20 as a home favorite since '04.

Average total in last five Kentucky-Louisville games is 60.6, but both of these coaches are in first game; Wildcats won last three series games by average score of 32-21. UK covered five of last six as road fave; they've got only one starter back on OL, Cards have four. Louisville is 5-9-1 vs spread in its last 15 games as an underdog.

UCLA (-12) beat K-State 23-9 in Pasadena LY, but Bruins have issues on OL this summer, and QB Prince is banged up again. Bruins are 3-6 as road dog under Neuheisel. Snyder covered eight of last 10 home games; K-State is 11-4 as home fave since '05, but is just 5-15 vs spread in last 10 non-league games. UCLA has Pac-10 tilt with Stanford next week.

BYU won by point at Washington in '08, missing PAT on tying TD in last minute; Husky coach Sarkisian was BYU QB. Washington has four starters back on OL, one of best QBs in country. BYU is playing two QBs until one steps up to grab job. Huskies are 6-4 as underdog with Sarkisian, but just 3-10 as road dog since 2007.

Oregon State is 10-4 as road dog since '06; they covered last five times as underdog of 7+ points. Both sides have four starters back on OL. TCU is 53-11 SU the last five years.

North Carolina has multiple suspensions here, line has moved from pick to LSU -5. Until we know who suspensions are, its goofy to analyze the game. Tigers have junior QB with 14 starts, three starters back on OL- they've won last 13 September games.

Cincinnati has new coach, junior QB with 4 career starts and an OL with three starters back; Bearcats are 12-7 vs spread in last 19 road contests. Fresno (+17) had 290 rushing yards in 28-20 loss at Cincinnati LY; they are shocking 2-16-1 vs spread at home last four years. Bulldogs have all five starters back on OL and a senior QB. Hill is terrific coach.

Wisconsin might have more fans here than UNLV; this is first time since '06 Badgers have returning starting QB (went 12-1 in '06) they also have all five starters back on OL. Badger band doesn't have enough cash to do roadtrip- Wisky is 6-5 as road fave under Bielema. Rebels are 12-7 as dog at home since '05; they've got senior QB, four starters back on OL.

-- Oregon is 18-8 as home favorite since '05, but they go to Tennessee in week, could look past woeful New Mexico squad that lost 41-6 at A&M 48-28 at Texas Tech in games vs BCS foes last year.

-- Auburn has Thursday SEC game with Miss State next; they're 9-14 as home favorite since '06. Arkansas State is 2-7 as road dog last couple of years, but they do return all five starters from LY's OL.
