        Sunday's six-pack

Worst seven NFL teams last year, in terms of turnover ratio
        32) Detroit Lions, -18

        T30) St Louis Rams, -13

        T30) Oakland Raiders, -13

        29) Cleveland Browns, -12

        28) Washington Redskins, -11

        T26) Miami Dolphins, -8

        T26) Seattle Seahawks, -8

Of these seven teams, only Miami/Detroit will have same QB/coach combination that they had last season.

Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff for a soggy summer Sunday

        13) Lou Piniella is leaving the Cubs after Sunday's game; his mother isn't doing too well in Florida, so he moved his retirement up six weeks.

        12) FOX's Kenny Albert was saying on air Saturday that when Piniella became a broadcaster a few years back, he didn't know how to keep score of a game, which you need to do in order to broadcast well. Would expect to see Lou back in a FOX booth next season.

        11) When was last time an NFL QB played a whole exhibition game? Giants' Rhett Bomar (Oklahoma's QB before Sam Bradford) got in a lot of work Saturday, as he tries to earn a roster spot. Why wouldn't Giants add an Arena League QB (their season just ended) to play some while the #1/#2 QBs healed up? Better than having one guy play whole game, and leave open the possibility of having to play without a QB.

        10) Alex Rodriguez has missed 11 games this year; Bronx won all 11.

        9) Cliff Lee is 0-2, 8.24 in his last three starts; he's allowed 13 home runs but only ten walks. Maybe he doesn't back guys off the plate enough.

        8) Mets sold Rod Barajas to the Dodgers for cash, as they raise the white flag to their season of mediocrity. LA badly needs a catcher who can hit a little with Russell Martin probably out for the year.

        7) USA beat Lithuania in basketball yesterday, but trailed at the half in a pretty fun game to watch. International rules make a better game, and the NBA should adopt them, other than keeping the game at 48 minutes.

        6) The Lithuanian team has an ad for pokerstars.net on its uniforms. How long before NBA teams have ads on their uniforms?

        5) When did sliding feet-first become obsolete in baseball? Jose Reyes slid headfirst into home Saturday night and damn near got crushed when Bucs' catcher landed on him. Sliding feet-first is just smarter way to run bases.

        4) Stephen Strasburg left game with a strained flexor tendon, which is in the elbow and is very scary for Nationals' fans. This is why teams coddle pitchers, especially higher-paid ones.

        3) Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman fractured the tip of his thumb last night, will miss the rest of preseason; Josh Johnson/Rudy Carpenter are other two QBs with Tampa Bay. Think they regret firing Jon Gruden? Things are so bad there, last night was first time in 12 years they had a blackout.

        2) Would an NFL team that struggles to sign free agents try reducing its offseason program, as an inducement to sign new players? Look at whole Favre situation-- do you really need all this offseason work? Favre starts at QB for Minnesota tonight, after three whole days of practice.

        1) Obviously I have no knowledge of this, but watching baseball for eight hours a night, seven days a week, I swear to God big league umpires have been schooled to lean towards the out call on close plays at first base, the obvious exception being the last out of the Galarraga one-hitter. Anytime there is a bang-bang play at first, 75-80% of them are called out. Weird.
