Boston guns for season sweep of Angels

The Angels are nearly a .500 team heading into Thursday’s game versus the Red Sox, but if not for the woeful season series versus Boston, they would be much better, perhaps even still in the playoff hunt. Los Angeles has lost all nine games to Boston in 2010, and a win by the Red Sox tonight would complete an unusual season sweep. Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com believe it will happen, with the Red Sox playing as -145 favorites behind struggling Josh Beckett.

There may be enough reasons to suspect the season sweep won’t happen though. First off, Boston (69-52) hasn't won more than three straight games since June. Secondly, Beckett has been hit hard in both of his last two starts, yielding 13 runs in 9-2/3 innings against Texas and the Yankees. Thirdly, there are several strong ******* Systems and/or Trends favoring the Angels in tonight’s matchup.

The system reads as follows and focuses on Beckett’s struggles:

Play On - Road underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (LA ANGELS) - with a bullpen that averages less than 2.75 innings per game against opponent with a starting pitcher whose ERA is 6.20 or worse on the season (AL). (35-15 since 1997.) (70%, +31.5 units. Rating = 4*)

The Angels will turn to Ervin Santana (12-8, 3.99 ERA) to cool off the Boston bats. The right-hander pitched well at Fenway on May 4, limiting the Red Sox to one run over seven innings, but wound up without a decision in a 5-1 loss. He is 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA in seven starts versus Boston. Santana has won four of his last five starts overall, including a 7-2 home victory Saturday over Toronto in which he allowed one run, three hits and four walks in seven innings. He also boasts a strong performance record against the league’s best recently:

SANTANA is 15-5 (+10.3 Units) against the money line when playing against a good team (Win Pct. 54% to 62%) over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record) The average score was SANTANA 5.0, OPPONENT 3.0 - (Rating = 1*)

Besides the current opponent, the other good news for the Red Sox is that they got 2008 AL MVP Dustin Pedroia back from a broken left foot Tuesday. They have been dealing with injury problems all season long and found out on Wednesday that Mike Cameron will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle. Fellow outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury also may not play again this year after re-aggravating a broken rib in his back last week.

The Red Sox won 7-5 on Wednesday night, improving to 9-0 in the season series with Los Angeles. Boston has averaged 7.3 runs while batting .327 in those games.

The Angels, meanwhile, will now try to avoid their fifth losing streak this season of at least four games. Two of the previous four skids concluded with sweeps at the hands of Boston.

The total for Thursday’s game is set at 9.5, and that wagering option also shows a unique trend relating to Boston’s dominance in the series:

SCIOSCIA is 14-4 OVER (+9.5 Units) in road games revenging 6 or more straight losses vs opponent in last 2 years as the manager of LA ANGELS. The average score was LA ANGELS 5.5, OPPONENT 6.2 - (Rating = 1*)

Look for the first pitch from Boston at 7:10 PM ET.

Patriots travel to Atlanta for second pre-season test

              New England (1-0) at Atlanta (1-0), Thursday, 8:00 p.m. EDT, Sports.com Line: Atlanta -2.5 Total: 37
The Patriots and Falcons are both coming off of solid wins in their preseason openers. For the second straight week, the Patriots are holding joint practice sessions with their upcoming opponent, having done the same thing last week with the Saints. Tom Brady was efficient (5-for-8, 67 yards in two series) in a 27-24 win over the Saints, but suffered a finger injury on his throwing hand. In typical Patriots fashion, the extent of the injury is unknown. Despite having participated in a majority of training sessions after undergoing major knee surgery in the offseason, Wes Welker did not play in the opener and probably will not suit up on Thursday either.
Matt Ryan played just two series in the Falcons’ 20-10 win over the Chiefs, completing three of six pass attempts, including a pair of third-down conversions to Tony Gonzalez. Michael Turner had a solid performance, gaining 29 yards on just four carries with a long of 10.

The Patriots stifled the Falcons offense in Week 3 of the 2009 regular season, posting a convincing 26-10 win in Foxboro. However, that game was played in less than ideal weather conditions with periods of heavy rain over the course of the afternoon. The Falcons are different team in a climate-controlled dome environment. The FoxSheets show that ATLANTA is 25-12 ATS (+11.8 Units) in dome games since 1993. The average score was ATLANTA 21.2, OPPONENT 16.9 - (Rating = 0*).

Winnipeg goes into Montreal as double-digit underdog

                Winnipeg (2-5) at Montreal (5-2), Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EDT, Line: Montreal -10.5 Total: 56
Winnipeg travels to Montreal to take on the Alouettes. Montreal is tied with Toronto for first in the East Division with 10 points, while the Blue Bombers are last in the East Division with four points.
Montreal had its five-game win streak snapped last week with a 37-22 loss at Toronto. Winnipeg has lost three straight and five of six since defeating Hamilton in their season opener. Winnipeg is winless on the road this season, while the Alouettes have won 12 straight at home. The defending Grey Cup Champions last lost at Molson Stadium on October 26, 2008 vs. Winnipeg.

Montreal has won five of the last seven meetings between these two teams, but FoxSheets expects Winnipeg to bounce back from last week’s loss. Play On - Road teams (WINNIPEG) - versus division opponents, off a loss against a division rival. (31-11 over the last 5 seasons.) (73.8%, +18.9 units. Rating = 2*).

Colts' Painter to see bulk of action in Buffalo

                  Indianapolis (0-1) at Buffalo (0-1), Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EDT, Sports.com Line: Buffalo -3.5 Total: 34
Peyton Manning showed his MVP form in the Colts’ opener against the 49ers, going 8-for-10 for 91 yards while leading his team to 10 points in two series. The offense struggled when Manning turned the reins over to backup Curtis Painter, who proceeded to throw 3 INT in a 37-17 loss to the 49ers. The Colts are now 4-19 in their last 23 preseason games.
The Bills are coming off of a 42-17 thrashing at the hands of the Redskins in their preseason opener. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the top performer at QB for Buffalo, completing 9 of 14 passes for 61 yards and a TD without throwing a pick. Trent Edwards connected on half of his 12 pass attempts for a total of 58 yards and an INT. Bills RBs Fred Jackson (hand) and Marshawn Lynch (ankle) are both out for this game and likely longer, which should lead to more carries for all-purpose rookie C.J. Spiller out of Clemson. Spiller carried the ball four times for 16 yards against the Redskins.

Painter can’t play much worse than he did in the Colts’ opener and it would seem unlikely that the defending AFC Champs would remain winless after this one against a depleted sub-par team.

Consider this stat from the FoxSheets: Play On - Underdogs or pick (INDIANAPOLIS) - off a home loss by 10 or more points, winless in the preseason. (21-4 over the last 10 seasons.) (84%, +16.6 units. Rating = 2*).

                      Thursday's Tip Sheet

With 6 ½ weeks left in the regular season, the races for postseason spots are heating up by the day. Minnesota will have the brooms out tonight when it hosts the White Sox, who have dropped to five games back of the division leaders of the American League Central. Likewise, the Phillies will attempt to sweep San Francisco out of the City of Brotherly Love.

                      **Giants at Phillies**

--Most books are listing Philadelphia (68-51, +323) as a minus-170 ‘chalk’ with a total of 8 ½ ‘under’ (minus-115). Bettors can take the Phillies on the run line (minus 1 1/2 runs) for a plus-120 payout (risk $100 to win $120).

--San Francisco (67-54, +645) is in the midst of a brief, albeit vital, six-game road trip against a pair of the National League’s premier teams – Philadelphia and St. Louis. The Giants lost an 8-2 decision to the Phillies last night to fall to below .500 on the road for the season at 30-31. They are in second place in the NL West, six games back of loop-leading San Diego.

--Charlie Manuel’s squad owns a stellar 38-19 home record. The Phils are 2 ½ games behind the Braves for first place in the NL East. However, they are two games in front of the Giants for the NL wild-card lead.

--Jonathan Sanchez (8-8, 3.60) owns a 3-4 record and 3.70 ERA in 12 road assignments this year. The left-hander has a 2-1 record and 3.38 ERA in four career starts against the Phillies.

--Cole Hamels (7-9, 3.33) has posted a 4-4 record and 3.18 ERA in 12 home starts this season. The southpaw has a 4-1 record and 4.22 ERA in seven lifetime starts against San Francisco.

--Hamels hasn’t been able to get a win in his last three starts, but he’s been extremely sharp. In fact, he has fanned 29 batters and walked just two in his last 22 innings pitched.

                      **White Sox at Twins**

--Most betting shops are listing Minnesota (70-50, +1136) as a minus-155 favorite with a total of 7 ½ ‘over’ (minus-115). Gamblers can back the Twins on the run line for a plus-130 return (risk $100 to win $130).

--Chicago (65-55, +670) lost for the fourth straight time last night, falling five games back of the division-leading Twins. The White Sox had a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the 10th in the series opener two nights ago, but that’s when Minnesota slugger Jim Thome belted the 12th walk-off homer of his distinguished career. Then in another 7-6 setback Wednesday, the White Six fell to 30-31 on the road.

--Ron Gardenhire’s squad has won six in a row at just the right time despite the absence of slugger Justin Morneau. The Twins have been cashing tickets at a 38-20 clip at their new home stadium this year.

--Ozzie Guillen will give the starting nod to Mark Buehrle (11-9, 4.05), who has plenty of experience against the White Sox’ bitter AL Central rivals. Buehrle is 24-17 with a 4.08 lifetime ERA against the Twins.

--Buehrle has compiled a 5-7 record and 3.60 ERA in 14 road starts this year.

--Minnesota RHP Carl Pavano (15-7, 3.27) has won in both of his starts against Chicago this year, working 16 innings while fanning 10 batters and issuing just one free pass. For his career, Pavano is 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA against the White Sox.

--Pavano has returned to the form he displayed in 2004 with the Marlins when he went 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA. That season netted him a monster contract with the Yankees, but the right-hander struggled to win just nine games in pinstripes from 2005-2008.

--Pavano has posted a 7-3 record and 3.43 ERA in 11 home assignments.

--The Twins are 25-17 against left-handed pitching this season.

--The ‘under’ is 58-58 overall for the White Sox, 32-29 in their road games.

--The ‘under’ is 58-55 overall for the Twins, 30-25 in their home outings.

                      **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Colorado RHP Jorge De La Rosa will make his eighth career start against the Dodgers on Thursday night. De La Rosa is 0-5 with a 6.58 ERA in seven previous assignments against L.A.

--In afternoon action Thursday, the Cubs will play host to the Padres with Carlos Zambrano taking the bump. Zambrano owns a 6-2 record and 2.71 ERA in 10 lifetime starts against San Diego.

--Speaking of the Padres, they continue to have the best money tally in all of baseball – by far! Going into Wednesday, San Diego backers had brought home more than 29 units of profit for the season. Give credit to the club’s bullpen, which sports the best ERA in the majors (2.80).

--Kansas City RHP Kyle Davies doesn’t appear to have impressive numbers with a 6-7 record and 5.22 ERA. However, those stats are merely hiding the only numbers that matter. Bettors backing the Royals for ‘a dime’ in each of Davies’ starts have won $10,300. KC is 13-10 in those outings, most of which have obviously come at generous underdog rates.

--The ‘over’ is an MLB-best 77-45 overall for the Diamondbacks.
