    Daily Sports Roundup: August 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox play host to the Tigers, the Cubs do battle with the Cardinals, and the Vikings take on the Rams in preseason gridiron action.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL schedule features seven exhibition contests on Saturday night, with Tampa Bay at Miami (-3.5), Detroit at Pittsburgh (-2.5), Houston (-1.5) at Arizona, Cleveland at Green Bay (-2.5), Chicago at San Diego (-3), Tennessee at Seattle (-3), and Minnesota at St. Louis (-1.5). The Vikings still don't have the final word on whether Brett Favre is returning to the fold this season, so they'll be leaning on some combination of Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels under center. A.J. Feeley will start at quarterback for the Rams on Saturday night, but rookie Sam Bradford will also see action with the first team.

As well, the lone Canadian Football League matchup on the schedule for Saturday has Montreal at Toronto. The Alouettes (5-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) haven't lost since their season opener, while the Argonauts (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) were thumped 41-10 in Montreal back on July 29. The Alouettes are pegged as 7.5-point road favorites for this Week 7 contest.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday offers up Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Seattle at Cleveland, Oakland at Minnesota, the Yankees at Kansas City, Boston at Texas, Toronto at the Angels, and Detroit at the White Sox. Rick Porcello (5-10, 5.74 ERA) is expected to get the ball for the Tigers on Saturday, while Chicago counters with Edwin Jackson (7-10, 4.83 ERA). Righthander Porcello picked up his first win since May 23 last time out, holding the Angels to three runs (two earned) on eight hits over six innings of work. Righthander Jackson had to settle for a no-decision against the Orioles in his most recent start, surrendering just two runs (one earned) on six hits over his six innings.

Over in the National League on Saturday it'll be San Diego at San Francisco, Arizona at Washington, Pittsburgh at Houston, Philadelphia at the Mets, Florida at Cincinnati, the Dodgers at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Colorado, and the Cubs at St. Louis. Carlos Zambrano (3-6, 5.46 ERA) will take the mound for Chicago in that last contest, while Chris Carpenter (13-3, 2.89 ERA) pitches for the Cardinals. Righthander Zambrano picked up a no-decision in his last trip to the mound, giving up two runs on four hits over five innings against the Giants. Righthander Carpenter beat the Reds last time out, allowing two runs over his seven innings. St. Louis is 6-0 over Carpenter's last six starts.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are three WNBA games on the Friday schedule, with Phoenix at New York, Los Angeles at Tulsa, and Atlanta at Chicago. The Sky (13-17 SU, 18-12 ATS) beat Phoenix 91-82 last time out; Sylvia Fowles picked up 24 points and 14 boards for Chicago in that victory. The Sky beat the Dream 88-82 when the teams played on July 3.

Bettors' best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Buccaneers at Dolphins: Miami opened at -1.5 but has been bet to -3.5 at most books. The total dipped from 34 to 33.5.

Lions at Steelers: Pittsburgh opened at -1.5 but has moved to -3 at most books. Total fell from 35 to 33.5.

Vikings at Rams: St. Louis opened at -1.5 but has been bet to -2.5 at most books.

Texans at Cardinals: Arizona opened at -1.5 but that line has turned around in Houston's favor at +1.5. Total dropped from 34 to 33.

Browns at Packers: Green Bay opened at -1.5 but has moved to -2.5. Total fell from 34.5 to 34 at most books.

Cubs at Cardinals: Total opened at 8 but has fallen to 7.5 at most books.

Pirates at Astros: Total opened at 8.5 but has slipped to 8 at most books.

Diamondbacks at Nationals: Total opened at 9.5 but has dropped to 9 at most books.

      Weather to watch

Cubs at Cardinals: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Dodgers at Braves: 60 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Tigers at White Sox: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

      Who's hot

Padres are 7-1 vs. the Giants this season.

Cardinals are 7-1 in their last eight.

Orioles are 9-2 since the hiring of manager Buck Showalter.

Angels are 5-1 in their last six overall and vs. Blue Jays.

      Who's not

Cubs are 2-14 in their last 16.

Astros are 1-6 in their last seven.

Nationals are 1-6 in their last seven.

Royals are 1-7 in their last eight.

      Key stat

-10 - Combined score in relation to par shot by PGA Championship golfers with the last name "Johnson". Both Zach and Dustin Johnson are 5-under after the first two rounds, good for a third-place tie. They are two of only nine golfers to complete each of the first two rounds under par.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury left Friday night's game against the Texas Rangers with an undisclosed injury. Ellsbury ran into pitcher Tommy Hunter in the first inning, but it's unclear if that had anything to do with his departure. Ellsbury was appearing in just his 18th game of the season Friday after he spent two stints on the disabled list while recovering from cracked ribs. The Red Sox, trying to stay alive for a playoff berth, can ill-afford any more injuries.

      Game of the day

      Padres at Giants (-105, 7)

      Notable quotable

"I was talking with my caddie this afternoon, and we were talking about something that happened this morning. But we both thought it was yesterday. So it's been a long day. I'll have no trouble sleeping tonight."

Golfer Nick Watney said after fog and weather issues delayed and postponed Friday's play at the PGA Championship.

      Tips and notes

Tiger Woods worked with swing coach Sean Foley on Friday following his opening-round 71 at the PGA Championship, but Woods has not definitively said if Foley will become his official swing coach. Woods has been playing without a coach since Hank Haney resigned in May. Woods sought Foley's advice during a practice round following a disastrous 18-over showing at last weekend's Bridgestone Invitational. Foley already coaches of Hunter Mahan, Sean O'Hair, Stephen Ames and Justin Rose. Woods said it is possible the two could pair up in the future. This weekend's play will weight heavily on the decision.

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Jonathan Broxton has been yanked from the closer's role, the Los Angeles Times reported. Broxton has three blown saves in his last eight appearances, including Thursday's 10-9 loss to Philadelphia when the Dodgers blew a 9-2 lead. Hong-Chi Kuo will get the chance to take over the closer's job from Broxton, who is 4-4 with 21 saves and a 3.50 ERA.

Houston Astros pitcher Bud Norris will start Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in place of an ailing Nelso Figueroa, who was scheduled to start against but had his outing pushed back to Tuesday after experiencing migraine-like symptoms. Norris is 4-7 with a 5.63 ERA. He last pitched on Monday, going 6 2/3 innings and getting a no-decision in a 10-4 win over Atlanta.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants (-105, 7)

The term "win-win situation" is overused in baseball trades. It should be saved for times like the Giants' deal for Jose Guillen on Friday.

The Giants have been lacking some power in their pursuit of the Padres in the division race while Guillen has been wasting away in Kansas City.

His number and passion have waned with the Royals, largely because he is a fierce competitor. He has not adjusted to settling for mediocrity.

"I know it got a little rough at times," Guillen told the Kansas City Star. "My passion is I want to win, and sometimes that gets misunderstood by people."

Guillen, a career .270 hitter with at least 20 home runs in five of his past seven seasons, finds a perfect place in the Giants' lineup.

Guillen can play right field and allow the Giants to move Aubrey Huff back to first base, or provide some situational hitting off the bench.

His arrival comes at the right time for this weekend's key series against the Padres. San Diego's Mat Latos took 1-0 wins from the Giants in their first two meetings.

However, the Giants adjusted and got their first win of the season over the Pads the last time they met. The Giants are batting .283 against righties in their last 10.

The Padres are hitting just .223 against leftties during that same span and haven't faced Madison Bumgarner all season. He was 1-0 against them last year.

        Pick: Giants

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox (-160, 9.5)

Little motivates a major-league player more than going up against his former team. Something about familiarity with an organization breeds contempt, especially if it's one that gave up on the player.

Such is the case for White Sox acquiree Edwin Jackson, who made his debut with the Chicago Northsiders last week by beating his 2009 squad, the Detroit Tigers.

Jackson downplayed the added motivation, but his new and former teammates noticed the extra zip on his pitches in the 4-1 win, in which he struck out six in seven innings of work.

"His fastball had that extra life on it," Detroit's Johnny Damon said of Jackson. "It reads 97 (mph). ... He started painting both sides of the plate. I put that right up there with the best performances against us this year. It's a great pickup for them. Pitching is what wins you ballgames, and he was pretty dominating."

Jackson has plenty of offensive support behind him now with the White Sox and seems to be more confident - something counterpart Rick Porcello has been lacking lately. He is 1-2 with a 6.62 ERA in his last three starts.

The Tigers have lost 22 of their last 29 games while the White Sox have won 22 of their last 27. The trend continues today.

        Pick: White Sox

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Streaking

Chris Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals (13-3, 2.89 ERA)

Just like the Incredible Hulk, you won’t like Chris Carpenter when he’s angry, especially if you’re an opposing batter. The Cardinals ace has bolstered his case for the National League Cy Young in recent starts, leaving a path of destruction along the way.

First, he blasts his shortstop for picking up the wrong glove during his last start. Then, he trades verbal barbs with Reds manager Dusty Baker during the teams’ melee this Tuesday. In the middle of all this drama, Carpenter is 4-0 in his last six starts with a 1.79 ERA. He’s posted quality starts in all six of those outings.

Trevor Cahill, Oakland Athletics (12-4, 2.56 ERA)

The A’s righty has been invisible to batters in his last three starts. Cahill hasn’t allowed an earned run in 25 innings and is coming off an eight-inning effort in which he gave up two unearned runs on six hits for his third straight win. He’s pitched into at least the eighth inning in all three of those starts.

        Slumping

Sean Sullivan, Kansas City Royals (1-3, 5.05 ERA)

No one would be thrilled to leave an AL contender for one of its basement teams, including Sullivan. The right hander has flopped since coming to Kansas City by way of the Los Angeles Angels, going 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in his first four starts for the Royals. Sullivan was beat up for six runs on 10 hits in his last trip to the bump, falling 6-4 to his former club Monday.

        Returning

Mitch Talbot, Cleveland Indians (8-9, 4.09 ERA)

The Tribe’s rookie right hander comes off the 15-day disabled list after nursing a back injury. Talbot hasn’t won since late June and is just 0-1 with an ERA just south of 5.00 in his last three outings. In his most recent start, against the New York Yankees on July 29, Talbot gave up one earned run on one hit with four walks before being yanked in the second inning with a back strain.

        This Day in Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 14 in Baseball History...

1888 - Tim Keefe winning streak is stopped at nineteen games when Gus Krock and the Chicago White Stockings beat the Giants before a crowd of 10,240 in New York.

1932 - John Quinn, at 49, becomes the oldest pitcher to win a major league game. Quinn earns the decision for Brooklyn in relief against the Giants.

1933 - Jimmie Foxx hits for the cycle and drives in nine runs to break the American League record, as the A's beat the Indians 11-5. A record eight players will hit for the cycle in 1933.

1937 - The Detroit Tigers scored 36 runs against the St. Louis Browns in a doubleheader to set a major league record. Pete Foxof the Tigers scored eight of the runs.

1958 - Vic Power of the Cleveland Indians stole home twice in the same game. He had only three steals all year.

1961 - The Philadelphia Phillies dropped their 17th straight game, a 9-2 loss to Dick Ellsworth and the Chicago Cubs. It was also the 11th consecutive complete game pitched against the Phillies.

1969 - On an off-day after a three-game sweep by the Astros in Houston, the New York Mets fell to third place, 9 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs.

1971 - Before 30,678 Pittsburgh fans, Cardinals ace Bob Gibson, 35, hurls the first no-hitter of his career, an 11-0 shellacking of the Pirates. Gibson walks three and strikes out 10, and paces the offense with three RBI.

1981 - Jeff Burroughs of the Seattle Mariners hit three home runs in a 13-3 rout of the Minnesota Twins.

1982 - Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies, in his first at-bat of a 15-11 victory over the Montreal Expos, passed Hank Aaron and moved into first place on the all-time at-bat list with 12,365.

1987 - Oakland's Mark McGwire slugs his 39th home run of the season in a 12-inning 7-6 win over California, breaking the major league record for rookies shared by Wally Berger and Frank Robinson. McGwire will finish the season with 49 homers, most in the American League.

1988 - Detroit pounds the Red Sox 18-6 at Fenway Park to end Boston's American League record home winning streak at 24 games. Boston was just two wins shy of the major league record held by the 1916 Giants.

1997 - Lights out! The Orioles and Mariners wait out a power outage of nearly two-and-a-half hours in varying degrees of light and darkness before the game is finally postponed. It results in the Mariners having to play back-to-back doubleheaders in different cities.

          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Sparks at Tulsa Shock (3.5, 160.5)

The Sparks got an emotional spark from Thursday night's 78-77 victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Tina Thompson buzzer-beater to keep their playoff hopes alive.

They hope it carries over for tonight's trip to Tulsa, but more than anything from their recent spirited practices which L.A. coach Jennifer Gillom attributes for their turnaround.

"I knew from practice on Monday and Tuesday that we would come out and have a great night," Gillom told the L.A. Daily News. "They practiced like a team that wanted to win the playoffs. If you compare practices from the beginning of the season until now, it's incredible."

The Sparks are 3-0 in the season series with the Shock and 6-1 dating back to the 2008 season. The primary factor can be summed up by one letter - D.

The Sparks' zone defense has given the Shock fits in the past. They have held the Shock to tallies of 70, 71 and 76 (in regulation before going on to an 86-83 overtime win), well below their season average.

With a playoff bid still at stake, look for the Sparks to turn it up on defense and remain a factor in the postseason hunt.

          Pick: Sparks

Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts (+7, 53)

Two weeks ago, the Alouettes solved the problem presented by the wonder-kid running back Cory Boyd. If the linebackers and the secondary keep finding a way to stop Boyd, the Alouettes will be fearless versus an Argos team that is still full of flaws on offence.

Als quarterback Anthony Calvillo is nursing a finger injury on his throwing hand but it didn’t show during training sessions this week. He should face the Argos Saturday.

“The ball arrives with full power. I know that he is experimenting to compensate for his injury but he is solid,” Montreal receiver Brian Bratton said of Calvillo’s condition.

                  Pick: Montreal

                  Sunday

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-8.5, 52.5)

The poor Eskimos seem to find new ways to shoot themselves in the foot every week.

“Sometime it works, sometime it doesn’t,” said offensive coordinator Kevin Strasser.

Right now, nothing seems to works for the Eskimos, who only scored 130 points in six games so far this season. Only the B.C. Lions’ offense, with 122, has been more pitiful.

The Eskimos are probably a better team than their 1-5 record shows but all will agree that the Stampeders fully deserve their 5-1 record.

The traditional Alberta Battle will likely be one-sided this time. Henry Burris threw only one interception in his last two games and Ken-Yon Rambo is back to catch his bullets.

                  The Eskimos will keep sliding.

                  Pick: Calgary
