    Daily Sports Roundup: August 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox begin a series in Toronto against the Blue Jays, while the Nationals host the Marlins, and the Storm look for a win in Atlanta.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Tuesday's American League schedule offers up Baltimore at Cleveland, Tampa Bay at Detroit, the Yankees at Texas, Minnesota at the White Sox, Kansas City at the Angels, Oakland at Seattle, and Boston at Toronto. The Red Sox are expected to use Daisuke Matsuzaka (8-3, 3.96 ERA) in that last contest, while the Blue Jays counter with Ricky Romero (9-7, 3.37 ERA). Righthander Matsuzaka dominated the Indians in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering just one run on five hits over eight innings of work in the victory. Lefthander Romero beat the Yankees last time out, going the full nine innings while giving up just two runs on two hits. Romero fanned four hitters that game.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be the Dodgers at Philadelphia, St. Louis at Cincinnati, Colorado at the Mets, Atlanta at Houston, Arizona at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at San Diego, the Cubs at San Francisco, and Florida at Washington. Anibal Sanchez (8-7, 3.50 ERA) is slated to pitch for the Marlins on Tuesday night, while Stephen Strasburg (5-2, 2.32 ERA) will return from the disabled list for the Nationals. Righthander Sanchez was beaten by the Phillies in his most recent start, giving up four runs on seven hits over 4 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Strasburg pitched against the Marlins back on July 16, tossing six shutout innings and giving up four hits that day.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, there are five games on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Connecticut at Washington, Minnesota at San Antonio, Phoenix at Chicago, Indiana at Los Angeles, and Seattle at Atlanta. The Storm (24-4 SU, 16-10-2 ATS) are coming off a 111-65 thrashing of Tulsa last time out, with Svetlana Abrosimova tossing in a team-high 20 points off the bench for Seattle in the win. The Dream (18-11 SU, 15-13-1 ATS) fell 95-93 to Indiana in their last game; Angel McCoughtry had 31 points for Atlanta in that loss.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Marlins at Nationals: The Nats opened at -190 with many books but have since dropped to around -176 in many markets.

Twins at White Sox: The Pale Hose opened around -120 but are now listed as lows as -105 at some books.

Braves at Astros: The Astros opened at +115 but now can be found as high as +133 at some books.

      Weather to watch

Twins at White Sox: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Cardinals at Reds: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

      Who's hot

Toronto is 7-2 in its past nine home games.

The under is 7-1-1 in the Rangers’ past nine home games.

The over is 7-0 in the Cardinals’ past seven games.

      Who's not

The Tigers have lost 20 of 26 games overall.

The Rockies have lost 22 of their past 26 against the Mets in New York.

The Pirates are 19-71 in their past 90 road games.

      Key stat

16-43: The record of the Nationals in their past 59 games following an off-day.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

New York Yankees starter A.J. Burnett was pulled from his start on Sunday against the Red Sox because of stiffness in his back. Burnett, who is 9-9 with a 4.93 ERA, is slated to toe the rubber on Tuesday night, but be wary of a last-second scratch again. The right-hander says he is feeling much better and is ready to start, however manager Joe Girardi has left the door open for a last-second swap. If you are playing the Yankees in a parlay, be careful. "I'm pretty certain he'll make that start," Girardi told MLB.com. "My initial reaction would be, he wouldn't have gone on the field [Monday] if he was having issues."

      Game of the day

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers (-133, 9.5)

      Notable quotable

"I try to do the best I can about trying to see my kids -- make sure I'm there for them, talk to them on the phone, Skype with them, video chat. I'm doing my best. It's a hard situation. In long run I want to take care of my kids and let them know I love them." – New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie told the New York Post about having eight kids with seven women in six states.

      Tips and notes

Lindsay Whalen is straight ballin right now. The Minnesota Lynx guard is the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week after leading her team to a 2-1 record that featured a pair of overtime wins. Whalen averaged 21.3 points per game for the week, including going a sterling 23-of-24 at the free-throw line. Overall, Whalen ranks third in the WNBA in assists (5.7 apg), fourth in free throw accuracy (.908), and third in minutes (33.5 mpg). Next up for Minnesota? A trip to San Antonio, who the Lynx trail by only a half game for third place in the Western Conference. In her past five games against the Silver Stars, Whalen is averaging 13 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

It’s an early youth movement for the Oakland Athletics. You typically don’t see a team two games over .500 late in the year call up a lot of young players, but the A’s are going to rely on the organization’s youngest stars to try to make a late-season push toward the playoffs. First baseman Chris Carter and infielder Jeff Larish got the call-up from Triple-A Sacramento, but it’s Carter who will be counted on to add pop to the lineup. In Sacramento, Carter was hitting .262, along with 27 homers and 58 extra-base hits -- both of which rank fifth in all of the Minors. He also racked up 89 RBI while playing in 94 games at first base, five in right field and 15 in left -- where he played in 11 of his past 12.

The Orioles are….good? Well at least their pitching has been. The team has an incredible streak of seven straight quality starts, amassing a record of 6-1 over that span. Pitchers Jeremy Guthrie (6-11), Brian Matusz (4-11), and Jake Arrieta (3-3) have all looked great over that stretch. So will it continue? It actually should. The team plays the next six on the road but have to face the struggling Indians for three game before facing the light-hitting Rays over the weekend. By next week, Baltimore could easily be the hottest team in the Majors.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day......

        13) Underrated fact: In 1988, Toronto's Dave Stieb lost a no-hitter with two outs in the 9th inning, two starts in a row. That pretty close to tying Johnny Van de Meer's record.

        12) 64 golfers have earned $1M on the PGA Tour in 2010. Then there are these three guys, one of whom you might have heard of........
        #83 DA Points $825,773 #84 EWoods $825,326 #85 JTeater $813,991

        11) Phil Mickelson is 10-1 at PGA this week, Woods is 12-1, first time in twelve years he's not favored to win a major that he's entered in.

        10) Bethel U in Tennessee is first college to offer scholarships to kids who show promise in the sport of bass fishing.

        9) In 11 of Johan Santana's 24 starts, Mets scored two or less runs.

        8) Ump Joe West was working 1st base in Texas-Oakland game Sunday; he kept going to mound from first base to hurry along mound conferences. Man is on a one-person crusade to speed up games. Announcers make fun of him a lot. Wonder what managers think of him.

        7) Mariners took Brandom Morrow with 5th pick of '06 draft, ahead of Washington native Tim Lincecum; then Seattle traded Morrow to Toronto for reliever Brandon League, which hasn't worked out too well either. So what did the Seattle front office do Monday? They fired the manager.

        6) The person who signed Milton Bradley should be fired, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Don Wakamatsu. Gutless decision by the Seattle GM, who shouldn't be resting too comfortably these days.

        5) Morrow is just third pitcher since 1920 to throw a one-hitter in which he struck out 17 batters; Kerry Wood/Curt Schilling are other two.

        4) Last time USC/Notre Dame changed football coaches in same season? 1941.

        3) Raptors/Nets will play two regular season games in London in March. Have a feeling with a Russian owner, the Nets are going to see a lot of the world until their new arena in Brooklyn is finished.

        2) Bill Walton made an appearance on Giants-Cubs telecast Monday, as it was Jerry Garcia Night at the ol' ballpark; he has now had 36 orthopedic operations but doesn't have back pain for the first time since 1974. Was surprised to discover by listening to him broadcast games that Walton is one of the nicest, most enthusiastic people around.

        1) Only thirty days left until the NFL regular season begins, 23 until the college football season kicks off. Can't wait.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Vincente Padilla (5-3, 3.05 ERA), Los Angeles Dodgers

The right-hander pitched one of the true gems of the season in his last start, tossing a complete-game two-hitter in a 2-0 win over the NL West-leading Padres. Padilla also struck out nine against only two walks in the victory.

Since coming off the disabled list in June he has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, posting a 1.80 ERA.

"He's been great. The thing about him is that he's been so aggressive, going after the hitters. And his stuff had been quality," manager Joe Torre told the Associated Press. "He's very proud of his stuff.”

              Slumping

Mike Pelfrey (10-6, 4.61 ERA), New York Mets

How bad have things been for the right-hander? Try giving up 10 runs in his past 10.1 innings, including five over just 4.2 innings in his most recent outing, an 8-3 loss to the Braves. In that loss, he struck out only one against two walks while giving up a pair of home runs.

"Every start has been the same way,” he told the Associated Press. “It's been frustrating the last six or seven starts, and that definitely continued tonight."

              Returning

Stephen Strasburg (5-2, 2.32 ERA), Washington Nationals

Strasmas – the national holiday that occurs every five days when the 22-year-old phenom takes the mound – took a brief hiatus when the emerging ace went on the DL with shoulder stiffness on July 29.

But much to the delight of Nationals fans, baseball fans and smart bettors across the country, Strasburg wasn’t shut down for the balance of the season and will take the bump on Tuesday night against the Marlins.

In his only start against Florida this season, the hurler went six innings, allowing just four hits and no runs as he struck out seven and walked three.

"They didn't prove that they could hit my fastball,” Strasburg told the Associated Press, “so I wasn't going to throw any changeups to possibly make a mistake.”

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (-125, 8)

Nobody hits right-handed pitching like the Toronto Blue Jays. The blue birds have hammered righties for an MLB-best 437 runs and are hitting a solid .260 against them.

But that’s not what makes them special. That’s the long ball.

The MLB leaders in home runs have hit a league-leading 148 round-trippers against right-handers – a staggering 44 more than any other team. The Blue Jays also have an MLB-best 199 doubles – twenty more than any other team.

"We're doing a good job offensively," Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista told the Associated Press. "We're coming up with big hits when we need them and solo shots here and there. That's been the recipe for success lately."

And who does Toronto face on Tuesday night? Try Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka, who has yielded seven home runs in only 16 starts this season.

In Dice-K’s only career start north of the border, he yielded one home run in just six innings.

              Pick: Blue Jays

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox (-105, 9)

The Twins can’t be any happier to visit the Windy City. Minnesota is an AL-best 7-3 in its past 10 games overall and a staggering 17-5 in its past 22 games against the Pale Hose.

And the Twins are getting healthier.

Second baseman Orlando Hudson returned from the disabled list just in time to spark a five-run rally on Sunday against the Indians. Catcher Joe Mauer finally is healthy enough to start catching regularly behind the plate and opens up the chance to put more power in the lineup at DH.

"The players stay after it. We talk about staying on an even keel and putting good at-bats together,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told MLB.com. “When you have guys that can hit it out of the ballpark like a Jim Thome, that can jumpstart you in a heartbeat."

Meantime, Chicago struggled in a four-game series in Baltimore and desperately needs a spark to maintain its razor-thin lead in the AL Central. The White Sox have won six of 10 but subtract a 12-2 win over Detroit and the team is averaging only 3.2 runs per game over that span.

"It's a combination of good pitching and we're not hitting right now," manager Ozzie Guillen told the Associated Press. "Right now our bats are very silent."

              Pick: Twins

              This Day in Baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 10 in Baseball History...

1901 - Frank Isbell of the Chicago White Sox set an American League record by stranding 11 teammates on the basepaths.

1904 - Jack Chesbro is knocked out by the White Sox after pitching 30 complete games in a row. For the year he will win 41 games, pitching 48 complete games out of 51 starts for the New York Highlanders. All are post-1900 records.

1929 - Grover Alexander beats the Phils 7-1 for his 373rd and last National League victory. He pitches four scoreless relief innings for the Cardinals to win 11-9 in the 11th inning.

1934 - Babe Ruth announces 1934 is definitely his final season as a regular player. He says he will seek a managerial role and will pinch-hit.

1944 - Red Barrett of the Boston Braves threw only 58 pitches to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 2-0, in a nine-inning game.

1957 - Mickey Mantle became the first player to clear the center-field hedge at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium when his 460-foot homer hit the base of the scoreboard. The Yankees beat the Orioles, 6-3.

1969 - Cesar Tovar of Minnesota broke up the second no-hit bid against the Twins by a Baltimore pitcher. Tovar singled with none out in the ninth off Mike Cuellar. Earlier in the year, Tovar singled with one out in the ninth to spoil Dave McNally's bid.

1971 - Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins hit his 500th home run in the first inning off Baltimore's Mike Cuellar to become the 10th player to hit 500 or more in a career. Killebrew also hit No. 501 off Cuellar, but the Orioles won, 4-3.

1971 - Sixteen baseball researchers at Cooperstown form the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

1981 - Major League Baseball resumed play after a two-month strike. In the Cardinals-Phillies game at Philadelphia, attended by 60,561 fans, Pete Rose broke Stan Musial's National League hit record when he singled for his 3,631st hit. It came off Mark Littell in the eighth inning.

1987 - Phillies pitcher Kevin Gross becomes the second pitcher in eight days to be ejected for scuffing the baseball when umpires discover sandpaper in his glove during the fifth inning of a 4-2 win over the Cubs. Like Joe Niekro, Gross will be suspended for 10 games.

1995 - Ball Night at Dodger Stadium turned into the first forfeit in the majors in 16 years. Los Angeles forfeited a game to the St. Louis Cardinals after fans threw souvenir baseballs onto the field three times. The game was called with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Mercury at Chicago Sky (-1.5, 184)

Bettors have to respect the type of consistency the Mercury have shown recently. Since starting the year off with a miserable 5-11 record, the defending champs are now beating the teams they should beat and losing to all the ones they’re expected to lose to.

Phoenix has only lost three games over its last 12 games; two of those came against the best team in the league, Seattle, and the other was against East-leading Indiana. Diana Taurasi and Company are also 6-2 against the spread over their last eight games.

Things aren’t going nearly as well for the Sky. Chicago is 0-5 over its last five games and just 1-3 ATS in its last four contests. Unless Sky star center Sylvia Fowles gets better support from her teammates, Phoenix will walk away with the road victory on Tuesday.

                Pick: Mercury

Seattle Storm at Atlanta Dream (-1, 166)

This is easily the marquee matchup of the night. The Storm are running away from the pack in the Western Conference but you have to wonder if complacency crept in last week when they fell to the lowly Lynx and Shock. Seattle is 2-0 since but is still just 3-5-1 against the number in its last nine games.

Atlanta hasn’t been playing its best basketball either. The Dream ended a four-game win streak with losses to Washington and Indiana. While the setback to Washington was a big disappointment, Atlanta still played a tight game at Indiana and nearly walked away with the W.

Expect forwards Iziane Marques and Angel McCoughtry to put up big numbers and help the Dream secure a big win over the league’s top team.

                Pick: Dream
