    Cincinnati vs. Dallas
The preseason starts Sunday night with the Bengals taking on the Cowboys. Cincinnati is the pick (-2 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Bengals favored by 3 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Cincinnati (-2 1/2). Here are all of this week's preseason picks.

Hall of Fame Game: What bettors need to know

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Dallas Cowboys (+2.5, 32.5)

As preseason games go, it usually doesn’t get much better than the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

    Hear us out.

For starters, it’s live action, some seven months after the Super Bowl champion was crowned. That alone attracts fans and bettors alike, especially when the sports world is suffering through the Dog Days of August.

But, more times than not, the NFL — and nowadays, NBC, which is along for the ride — concocts a decent matchup. Whether it’s public teams, or teams with new, marketable players, the league usually gets it right when scheduling this tilt.

This year? No different. You have the Cowboys, still very much America’s Team, with stars and upside galore after a rare playoff victory. And you have the Bengals, always a decent draw in the Marvin Lewis Era, and now they even have Terrell Owens as the cherry on top.

“It’s a good thing,” Lewis said, “to play in a nationally televised game.”

We — the starving football public — agree, Marvin. So, without further adieu, let’s break down the open of what will be a seven-month marathon.

    WILL THE STARS COME OUT?

Yes, but not for long. Let’s face it, the Bengals did not sign Owens to sit him during a period where he must get himself prepared for the long haul.

Plus, with a national audience, and the league, and his former teams — including the one across the sideline — watching, you can bet Owens wants the face time.

“They’ll play some in the first quarter,” Lewis said of the starters. “And then we’ll play most of the other guys.”

Expect the same from the Cowboys, who will quickly iron out some kinks on offense and then allow Tony Romo to wear the fitted baseball cap backwards on the sideline. During practice this week, in fact, Dallas coach Wade Phillips said a perfect scenario might just be “eight plays” for the starters.

“Our first group will play. The number of plays is the key,” he said. “I'd rather not have three three-and-outs. I just want to give them a feel for playing.”

    WHO WANTS IT MORE?

Once it becomes garbage time, it comes down to who has more talented reserves, and quite frankly, who wants to win?

Conventional thinking might lean toward the Bengals:

They’re playing in their home state, and plenty of fans will make the trip.
They will not have to travel as far as the Cowboys.
They have to be eager to wipe away the memory of losing at home to the Jets in the Wild-Card Round, 24-14.
“This is our first chance to play against guys in other colored helmets, and the timing is good,” Lewis said. “It’s a good opportunity, and I’ve said this since we decided to take on the game.”

    SPEAK OF THE SPREAD

The line opened at Dallas -1, which is not surprising. The Cowboys made it to the Divisional Round — one week longer than Cincinnati did — last year, and clearly have their sights set on bigger things.

It looks like the books that opened an early line on this game got caught by sharp Bengals money and quickly adjusted.

A little T.O. magic — and the fact that the nation is eager to see him paired up with Chad Ochocinco — has given the Bengals a little mojo here as well. Despite a Dallas 58-42 edge in betting percentage (according to Covers Consensus Picks), the line has surprisingly shifted to Cincinnati -3.

    FACTS AND TRENDS

The Cowboys are 5-7 against the spread in the preseason under Phillips. The team is also just 1-2 in its first preseason game of the season under Phillips and that cover came in the former defensive coordinator’s first game as Dallas’ head coach.

The over has been a better Cowboy bet under the silver-haired, pudgy coach. Dallas has played over the total in eight of their 12 preseason games under Phillips.

Cowboys blogger Gerry Fraley points out the ‘Boys spent a good portion of their first two weeks in camp practicing their red-zone offense. Could we see Phillips going for it on fourth down if his team is close by the painted grass?

Cincinnati is 12-7-1 ATS in the preseason since 2006 (3-1 in their first game) and 24-22-2 in August under Lewis.

Favorites are 2-1-1 the last four Hall of Fame Games.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

R.A. Dickey (7-4, 2.36 ERA), New York Mets

Who’s the Mets most consistent starting pitcher? Johan Santana? Mike Pelfrey? Guess again. It’s the 35-year-old knuckleballer at the end of the rotation.

The Mets are 2-0 in his last two outings but they’ve failed to take advantage of a number of Dickey’s quality starts because of a lack of run support.

New York is averaging just 1.8 runs in Dickey’s last six appearances. The under is 6-0 over that period.

Jeremy Guthrie (5-11, 4.21 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

Guthrie is on a modest little streak right now. The 31-year-old righty is 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 0.94 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) over his last four starts.

Not surprising, the under is also 4-0 in those four games.

Trevor Cahill (11-4, 2.72 ERA), Oakland Athletics

Oakland’s ace is on a 17-inning shutout streak. Cahill pitched a complete game shutout against the Royals in his last start and held the hard-hitting Rangers off the scoreboard in eight innings of work in the start before.

"The sinker is the key to my success all the time," Cahill told the Associated Press following his three-hitter performance against the Royals. "I was able to keep it down in the zone. I walked a few guys but I also caught a break and got the double plays."

The A’s are 8-2 in Cahill’s last 10 outings and they were underdogs in four of those games.

      Slumping

Derek Lowe (10-9, 4.44 ERA), Atlanta Braves

Look, it’s the year of the pitcher and that means finding a hurler in bad form is like trying to find a straight guy at an ABBA concert. So apologies to Lowe because he’s not dealing duds every time he toes the rubber.

The former Dodger allowed one run and no walks in six innings in his last start. But the final outcome wasn’t a good one for the Braves, something that’s been happening way too often when Lowe takes the hill.

Atlanta is just 1-7 in Lowe’s last eight appearances, and the NL East-leading club was the favorite in six of those games.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Red Sox at Yankees
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

The most celebrated rivalry in the American League resumes Sunday night when the Yankees and Red Sox meet in Game 3 of an extended four-game series at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

      Blood rivalry

Whether it’s Yale-Harvard, Ali-Frazier or even the Bruins-Canadiens, rivalry games are all special.

While we tend to focus on the here and now, you can’t help but look to those games against hated rivals. It’s because, first and foremost, players and teams want nothing more than to beat their rivals.

Aside from the teams playing with a greater level of intensity, fans put on their best face for blood-rivals, too. The players know it and they respond accordingly.

This series rivalry formed back in the 1920 when the Red Sox sold legendary Hall of Famer Babe Ruth to the Yankees and each season it seems like another meaningful chapter is added.

Last year Josh Beckett hit a number of Yankee players and blamed it on “poor control”. He even decked Derek Jeter with the bases loaded.

      Did you know

With the addition of Kerry Wood, Austin Kearns and Lance Berkman at the trade deadline, the Yanks have 10 players on their roster who were selected in the first round of the draft.

      Down but not out

Entering this series, the Bronx Bombers dropped two of three to the Rays and Blue Jays, the first time this season that they have lost consecutive series of at least three games.

The last time the Yankees lost two three-game series in a row was June 16-21, 2009, when they dropped two of three to both the Nationals and Marlins.

Meanwhile, Boston entered the series six games behind the Yankees having just lost 1B Kevin Youkilis to a thumb injury for the year.

Youkilis is one of three Red Sox players who have played more than 95 games this season. The Yankees, on the other hand, have six players who have played more than 95 games.

Mike Lowell, returning off the disabled list, will now step into Youkilis’ shoes, and he is ready.

"As tough as it is to lose Youkilis, I think we're pretty fortunate," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "I don't know how many teams can take a Youkilis out and put a Lowell in. I guess that's how I prefer to look at it."

Through it all, Yankees manager Joe Girardi refuses to take Boston for granted, even after watching his team win 14 of its last 18 against its divisional foe.

"I think they've dealt with it well," Girardi said of Boston's recent rash of injuries. "They've had a number of injuries to key players. Their rotation has continued to pitch well, they've continued to stay in it with all these injuries."

      Yo, Adrian

Boston third baseman Adrian Beltre has stepped up to fill the recent holes caused by injuries.

Beltre blasted a grand slam in Thursday's win over Cleveland, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, his longest of the season.

He is hitting .341 with four home runs and 13 RBIs over the course of the streak.

The blast also gave Beltre 20 home runs and 75 RBIs on the season.

It's the eighth time he has cracked 20 homers in a season and the ninth time he's tallied at least 75 RBIs.

Only 10 other third basemen since 1901 have managed to put together as many seasons in each of those statistical categories.

      Stay tuned

Boston GM Theo Epstein was disappointed but not overwrought with bitterness at not being able to pull the trigger at this year’s trade deadline.

"In past years we've been able to make trades that immediately impact our big league team. That's a really satisfying feeling. Other years we haven't been able to and come away with a bit of an empty feeling. Today is more the latter. It's not the end of the story."

      Tale of the tape

Former Marlins, A.J. Burnett (9-9, 4.93) and Josh Beckett (3-1, 5.70), toe the rubber this evening in a matchup of struggling right-handers.

Burnett suffered from a horrible June where he was 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA. If you remove those numbers, during which pitching coach Dave Eiland was away from the team, his season stats are more than serviceable at 9-4 with a 3.50 ERA.

The 33-year-old Burnett is 8-6 with a 4.92 ERA in 14 career team starts against the Red Sox, including 4-2 at home.

Beltre is 10-for-31 (.323) with six doubles and seven RBIs off the righty, but Lowell is just 4-for-20 (.200).

Beckett has pitched well since coming off the 60-day DL on July 23. He is 3-0 with a 2.18 ERA in his past three team starts.

The right-hander's last two outings before going on the DL were against the Yankees and he did not pitch well in either of them. In fact, in three outings this season vs. New York, Beckett owns a 10.43 ERA.

In his career, Beckett is 9-6 with a 5.95 against the Bombers, but has pitched well at the new Yankee Stadium, going 2-1 with a 3.06 in three starts.

Robinson Cano is 18-for-52 (.346) with seven doubles, three homers and 12 RBIs off Beckett. Posada is 11-for-33 (.333) against the right-hander, but has struck out 10 times.

Mark Teixeira is 4-for-28 (.143), while the recently acquire Berkman is 3-for-18 (.167) with seven strikeouts against Beckett.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays (+112, 8.5)

How do you guarantee yourself another start in the Major Leagues? Hit the hell out of the baseball.

That’s just what Toronto rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia did in his MLB debut on Saturday, smashing the poor white ball four times in five at-bats, driving in three on a pair of home runs and adding three runs scored and a double. Not a bad way to start your career, especially on a team looking to put together a second-half run.

"J.P. had a heck of a day, one that he can go back and tell his grandkids about," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston told the Associated Press. "I don't know if anyone would believe it though."

But most people wouldn’t believe the Toronto offense, which cranked eight home runs in a 17-11 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The eight ding-dongs are the most by a team in one game since the Yankees smashed eight gopher balls in a 16-3 win over the White Sox in 2007.

So can the Blue Jays keep it up? Sure. The Rays have lost a season-high four straight and are without big bopper Carlos Pena. Meantime, the Blue Jays have won 18 of their past 26 games against Tampa Bay and four of five overall.

        Pick: Blue Jays

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles (+117, 8.5)

What happens when two pop-gun offenses meet? Try the under.

Chicago and the Orioles scored only three runs in the first game of their series and each have had the under hit at least five times in their past 10 games. For
the season, Chicago has a middling, 54-51-4 over/under mark, compared to a horrendous, 45-58-6 record for Baltimore.

The biggest reason for the teams seeing so many unders this year is mediocre offenses. The White Sox average a respectable 4.6 runs per game, but the Orioles are just dreadful, scoring just 3.6 times per game.

So now that we have a base of mediocre offense and terrible offense, let’s mix in White Sox ace Mark Buehrle (4.05 ERA) and Orioles ace Jeremy Guthrie (4.21 ERA). The hurlers have combined to see the under hit four times in their past six starts.

“Up and down the lineup, we’re moving the ball pretty well and facing some pretty good pitching and having to scrap a little bit,” White Sox outfielder Juan Pierre told ESPNChicago.com. “Overall, the last couple weeks, we’ve been moving the ball good as a team.”

        Pick: Under

        This Day in Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 8 in Baseball History...

1877 - After St. Louis catcher John Clapp has his cheek smashed by a foul tip, replacement Mike Dorgan goes behind the plate wearing a mask. This is perhaps the first use of a catcher's mask in an official National League game.

1903 - A week after pitching his first doubleheader victory, Joe McGinnity of the New York Giants did it again, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers 6-1 and 4-3. In the second game, he stole home.

1905 - Pittsburgh second baseman Dave Brain, who hit three triples in a game for St. Louis against Pittsburgh on May 29, repeats the performance for Pittsburgh against Boston. He is the only player to perform the feat twice in one season.

1915 - Philadelphia's Gavvy Cravath hit four doubles and drove in eight runs in a 14-7 victory over the Reds at Cincinnati.

1916 - The Athletics set an AL record with their 19th loss in a row on the road. The streak began on July 25, making it a record for losses in two weeks.

1920 - Howard Ehmke of the Detroit Tigers pitched the fastest game in American League history, one hour and 13 minutes, for a 1-0 victory against the New York Yankees.

1931 - Bobby Burke of the Washington Senators pitched a 5-0 no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox.

1954 - The Brooklyn Dodgers pounded the Cincinnati Reds 20-7 at Ebbets Field. The Dodgers scored 13 runs in the eighth inning after two were out.

1973 - Designated hitter Orlando Cepeda hit four doubles as the Boston Red Sox posted a 9-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

1982 - California's Doug DeCinces hit three home runs in a game for the second time in less than a week. DeCinces hit solo homers in the first and third innings and connected for a two-run shot in the eighth of a 9-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners. DeCinces hit three against Minnesota on Aug. 3.

1985 - Baseball, after a two-day strike, resumed with an 18-game schedule, including five doubleheaders.

1988 - The first night game in Wrigley Field's 74-year history was postponed with the Chicago Cubs leading the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 after heavy rains started in the bottom of the fourth inning. Philadelphia's Phil Bradley led off the game with a home run, but all numbers were wiped out by the rain.

1992 - Oakland's Dennis Eckersley had his consecutive saves record snapped at 40. His two records - 36 straight to start a season, and 40 straight over two seasons - ended trying to protect a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning against the Kansas City Royals. Eckersley gave up a two-out, two-run single to Gregg Jefferies which gave the Royals a 3-2 lead. But the Athletics came back to win the game in the ninth, 5-3.

1997 - Randy Johnson struck out 19, matching the major league record for left-handers he had tied earlier this season, as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-0.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Liberty at Minnesota Lynx (+2, 154.5)

If you thought Minnesota rallying from a 16-point halftime deficit for an overtime win last night in Chicago was impressive, just wait till you see the odds against the Lynx winning less than 24 hours later.

Minnesota, which has won just 10 games all season, is on a three-game winning streak for only the second time this season and hasn’t won four in a row since May of 2008. The team also is just 3-7 in the second half of back-to-back games since the start of 2008, with one of those wins coming against lowly Tulsa this season.

"We have nine games left," rookie Monica Wright told the Lynx's official website. "So we definitely want to take advantage of them and we just want to end off on a good note."

Meantime, the Liberty, tied for third in the Eastern Conference, are a solid 7-7 on the road this season and have won five straight games, including a road-win against a tough Indiana team.

Minnesota beat New York in the team’s only matchup this season, 75-68, however the road-warrior Liberty are 7-2 ATS in the team’s past nine meetings in the Lynx’s gym.

          Pick: Liberty

Indiana Fever at Phoenix Mercury (-4, 184.5)

Phoenix touts many offensive weapons, but none that can compare to the recent play of Indiana's Tamika Catchings.

The 6-foot-1, 167-pound forward is averaging 17.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game as she has led the Fever to six wins in the team’s past 10 games. Catchings has posted at least 16 points in five straight games, including a season-high 30 points and eight rebounds in a 95-93 win over Atlanta.

"You looked in everybody's faces like, 'We're not going to lose this game tonight,'" Catchings, who also had three steals and three assists against the Dream, told the Associated Press. "Every game from here on out is going to be that playoff mentality. In the East, every game has been so close and the standings are so crucial for every team."

The Mercury have won four straight and eight of 10, but struggle against the Fever in Phoenix. Indiana is a sterling 7-1 ATS in the team’s past eight trips to the desert, including seeing the under hit in seven of 10 matchups.

          Pick: Fever

              Daily Sports Roundup: August 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees host the Red Sox under the lights, the NFL begins its preseason, and the Sprint Cup drivers hit the road at Watkins Glen.

              Colliding on the gridiron . . .
The National Football League kicks off its preseason schedule with the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on Sunday. This year's matchup features the Cowboys taking on the Bengals, with the oddsmakers pegging Cincinnati as a 2.5-point favorite and the total set at 33 points. Neither team's starters are expected to play more than a few series in the contest.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Sunday has Minnesota at Cleveland, the Angels at Detroit, Tampa Bay at Toronto, the White Sox at Baltimore, Texas at Oakland, Kansas City at Seattle, and Boston at the Yankees. The Red Sox are expected to send Josh Beckett (3-1, 5.70 ERA) to the mound in that Sunday night matchup, while New York counters with A.J. Burnett (9-9, 4.93 ERA). Righthander Beckett beat the Indians in his most recent trip to the mound, giving up one run on three hits over his eight innings of work. Righthander Burnett was knocked around by the Blue Jays last time out, giving up eight runs on eight hits over his 4 2-3 innings. New York is 3-7 in Burnett's last 10 starts.

Over in the National League on Sunday it'll be St. Louis at Florida, Colorado at Pittsburgh, San Francisco at Atlanta, Houston at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at the Cubs, Washington at the Dodgers, San Diego at Arizona, and the Mets at Philadelphia. R.A. Dickey (7-4, 2.36 ERA) is slated to start for New York in that last contest, while the Phillies turn to Roy Halladay (13-8, 2.17 ERA). Righthander Dickey had to settle for a no-decision last time out, giving up two runs on five hits over his six innings of work against the Braves. Righthander Halladay beat the Marlins in his last trip to the mound, surrendering one run on five hits over seven innings while fanning nine hitters in the win.

              Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will take on Watkins Glen International's road course on Sunday in the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. Oddsmakers have Marcos Ambrose pegged at 7/2 odds to get the win at Watkins Glen this weekend, with five-time track winner Tony Stewart just behind him on that list at 4/1. Jeff Gordon, a four-time winner at Watkins Glen, is pegged at 15/2 odds for Sunday, with both Kyle Busch (the 2008 Watkins Glen winner) and Jimmie Johnson at 17/2, and Juan Montoya at 8/1. Kevin Harvick, who won this race in 2006, is listed at 12/1 this time around, with 2003 winner Robby Gordon at 25/1. Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray are both at 22/1.

              Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are four games on the WNBA's schedule for Sunday, with Indiana at Phoenix, New York at Minnesota, San Antonio at Los Angeles, and Washington at Connecticut. The Mystics and Sun met on July 27 in Connecticut, with the Sun winning 88-78 as a 3.5-point home favorite. Asjha Jones led the way for the Sun with 23 points in that victory, while Renee Montgomery picked up 17 points off the bench. Crystal Langhorne had 23 points in the loss for the Mystics, while Monique Currie had 18 points.

Rangers at Athletics – An 11 mph wind is expected to blow from home plate toward right center field.

Cardinals at Marlins – There is a 40 percent chance of rain with a 7 mph wind blowing from home plate toward center field.

Reds at Cubs – A 16 mph wind is expected to blow from behind home plate toward right center field.

                Who’s hot

The Phoenix Mercury started slow, but are absolutely scorching the hardwood, winning eight of their past 10 and going over the total in seven of those contests.

The Cincinnati Reds are regaining some of their early season form, winning eight of their past 10 with pitching being the key. The Reds have held opponents to four or fewer runs eight times over that stretch – all wins.

The Twins are tied for the best record in the AL over their past 10, winning seven times thanks to stellar pitching which has held opponents to four or fewer runs seven times during that span.

                Who’s not

The Connecticut Sun are going through a total eclipse – the team has lost four straight and six of seven.

It might be time for the Cubs to be put down – Chicago has lost nine of 10 and scored three or fewer runs seven times over that span.

The Dodgers are trying to push manager Joe Torre out the door early. The team has won only two of their past 10 and crossed home plate three or fewer times in seven games during that run.

                Key stat

4 – Straight wins by new Orioles manager Buck Showalter. He also won six straight as the manager of the Yankees in 1992. The most recent managers to start at least 4-0 with two different teams were Bill Virdon and Pat Corrales. Virdon accomplished the feat with the Yankees in 1974 and Expos in 1983; Corrales did it during his tenure with the Rangers in 1979 and Indians in 1983.

                Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Many people may have overlooked the fact that a struggling Alex Rodriguez was a last-second scratch from the Yankees lineup on Saturday against Boston. Not the case. A-Rod was hit in the leg by a line-drive during batting practice that gave him a bruise on his shin and caused him to fall to the ground and cover his face in intense pain. A-Rod is listed as day-to-day with the injury, but with a 1.5-game lead in the AL East and a huge lead in the Wild Card, the team may decide to bench their slugger, who is hitting .263 with 17 home runs and 88 RBI. "I hit it and obviously had a great view of it. I was just [saying], 'Look out!'" Yankees first baseman Lance Berkman told MLB.com. "It was on him. I just remember hitting it and cringing. It was heading right for him. It was hard. I hope he's not out very long."

                Notable quotable

"It was a tough thing for me. I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game, and as an official you never want to do that," – NFL referee Bill Leavy on his performance in the 2006 Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers.

                Tips and notes

                - Welcome back, O-Dog. The Twins’ potent lineup gets another boost this week with the return of second baseman Orlando Hudson from an oblique strain that had him on the 15-day disabled list. Hudson adds speed and defense and is hitting .284 with 27 RBI and 53 runs scored. Even better, catcher Joe Mauer may make his return behind the plate after starting at DH on Saturday. Mauer is batting .315 with six home runs and 58 RBI. The Twins have won an AL-best seven of their past 10 and this could propel them past the White Sox in the AL Central.

                - When the Red Bulls take the field in Chicago against the Fire, it will mark the first time in league history that five designated players have been featured in one game: Juan Pablo Angel, Thierry Henry and Rafa Márquez for New York and Nery Castillo and Freddie Ljungberg for Chicago. For bettors, what this means is a great time to take a close look at the over. The current line sits at 2.5-goals and both teams have gone over the total in each of their most recent games. Look for talent and fireworks to be on display.

                - Becky Hammon loves playing the Los Angeles Sparks. The guard for the San Antonio Silver Stars averages 14.2 points per game on the season but is averaging 17 per game against the Sparks, leading her team to two wins in three meetings. Her 5.3 assists per game also hold consistent against L.A., as she has had no trouble handling them this season. San Antonio also has won three of its past five ATS and is poised to party in Los Angeles this weekend.
