    Who's hot

Rays are 10-3 in their last 13.

Astros are 7-1 in their last eight.

White Sox are 9-2 in their last 11.

Twins are 12-3 in their last 15.

Padres have won six in a row over Diamondbacks.

Rockies are 5-1 in their last six.

    Who's not

Cubs are 1-7 in their last eight.

Pirates are 1-6 in their last seven.

Angels are 3-13 in their last 16 on the road.

Tigers are 5-18 in their last 23.

Red Sox are 1-8 in their last nine in N.Y.

Mariners are 1-7 in their last nine.

    Key stat

49-10 - Combined score of the last six meetings between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. The Reds scored 14 twice and 12 once in those games.

    Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis will undergo season-ending surgery on his right thumb, making his team's battle for a playoff spot even more of an uphill battle. Youkilils will be in a cast for up to six weeks after the surgery but won't be ready to play until the start of next season. Youkilis was batting .307 with 19 home runs and 62 RBIs in 362. The Red Sox have a healthy Mike Lowell ready to fill in but he can't produce at the level of his predecessor.

    Game of the day

Red Sox at Yankees (-145, 9)

    Notable quotable

"It pretty much can't happen any place but here. I know it works both ways but to lose a game in a pennant situation like that because of a roof indicates why there's a crying need for a new ballpark."

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said Thursday after Minnesota Twins outfielder Jason Kubel's ninth-inning pop-up hit the catwalk at Tropicana Field for the game-winning RBI single.

    Tips and notes

Last-minute trades aren't "Dunn" just yet. An unidentified team has claimed Washington Nationals outfielder Adam Dunn off waivers, FOXSports.com reported Thursday. The Nationals are only permitted to deal with the team that made the waiver claim until Monday. Had Dunn cleared waivers, the Nationals could have discussed a trade with all 29 major-league teams. Washington would like to move Dunn, who is set to make $4 million the rest of the season. The 30-year-old is hitting .277 with 28 home runs and 71 RBIs in 386 at-bats so far this season.

Washington Nationals may be losing a big bat in Dunn but they are regaining a golden arm. Rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg looked strong in a simulated game Thursday as he continues rehabbing a shoulder injury. Strasburg faced nine hitters and threw approximately 40 pitches. He reported no pain in his injured shoulder, which has landed him on the 15-day disabled list. Strasburg, 22, is eligible to return from the DL Tuesday against the Florida Marlins. The righthander is 5-2 with a 2.32 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings.

Real Madrid standout Kaka had surgery on his left knee Thursday and may miss up to four months of action. The Brazilian midfielder had long-standing meniscus damage that was revealed after meeting a Belgian knee specialist. Kaka, who joined Real from AC Milan last year for a $85.3 million transfer fee, scored eight goals in 25 Liga appearances last season, but had a disappointing World Cup for Brazil, which lost in the semifinals to the Netherlands.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (145, 6.5)

Whether as a Mariner or a Ranger, lefthanded ace Cliff Lee has enjoyed his best days against the Oakland A's - both this season and in his career.

Lee is 4-2 with a 2.26 ERA vs. the A's - his lowest ERA against any team in baseball - but that number is inflated compared to his last outing against Oakland.

Lee settled for a no-decision last week against the A's despite allowing no earned runs over nine innings of work and throwing 13 strikeouts to no walks.

"That game was all Cliff Lee," teammate Michael Young said. "You can't say enough about the job he did. Their starting pitcher threw the ball really well, but Cliff dealt for nine innings."

Lee will be out for revenge in this one and will face off with fellow lefty Dallas Braden, who is back on track with back-to-back wins. But he is just 1-3 lifetime against the Rangers with a 3.86 ERA.

      Pick: Rangers

St. Louis Cardinals at Florida Marlins (130, 6.5)

Cardinals righthander Adam Wainwright should consider a career in deep-sea fishing after baseball because he's always had a knack for hooking the Marlins.

Wainwright is 3-1 lifetime with a 2.61 ERA against the Fish. His lone loss to Florida came in his last meeting - a 2-1 pitchers' duel in which he lasted seven innings.

Wainwright had eight strikeouts to only one walk in that one, bring his career total against the Marlins to 37 Ks and 10 Ws over 38 innings. In his last six starts, he has 33 Ks to only three Ws.

Wainwright faces an equally hot righty in Ricky Nolasco, who has won three straight starts in impressive fashion. But he hasn't been as lucky against the Cards, going 0-2 with a 5.92 ERA.

The Cards have won 19 of their last 28 against the Marlins, who are batting just .233 against righties over their last 10. Look for the Cards to squish the Fish.

      Pick: Cardinals

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Bronson Arroyo (11-6, 4.01 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

Besides one ugly, seven-run outing, this right-handed hurler has been money in the bank. The Reds are 6-3 in Arroyo’s last nine starts and the under is 7-2 over the same stretch.

The former Red Sox went 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) in the month of July.

Francisco Liriano (10-7, 3.18 ERA), Minnesota Twins

Liriano’s last three starts have all been gems but each of them came against terrible clubs. The talented lefty is on a 21-inning shutout streak, holding the Mariners, Royals and Indians off the scoreboard.

"He kept our hitters off balance. When you have his stuff and you're on and you're hitting your spots, it's pretty tough to hit a guy like that," Seattle's Michael Saunders told reporters after Liriano struck out 11 Mariners and walked two.

The Twins are 4-0 in their ace’s last four appearances and they’ve covered the runline in each of those outings too.

Wandy Rodriguez (9-11, 4.49 ERA), Houston Astros

The ‘Stros have pretty solid 1-2 punch with Brett Myers and this 31-year-old southpaw. Rodriguez is 6-1 with a 1.91 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP in his last seven trips to the bump. He’s been an underdog in four of those starts, too.

"He's throwing the ball extremely well, commanding that fastball, which is setting up the curveball," Astros manager Brad Mills told the Associated Press after
Rodriguez gave up no runs and struck out nine in eight innings of work against the Brewers last week. "He was really hitting on that curveball today. When he's able to spot that fastball and his curveball's like it is, it's going to be tough."

      Slumping

Tommy Hanson (8-8, 3.83 ERA), Atlanta Braves

Tommy Hanson isn’t getting a lot of help from his mates at the dish or in the field. The hard-throwing youngster is 0-3 in his last four starts despite owning a respectable 2.55 ERA during that period.

The Braves averaged just two runs per game over his cold streak and they made even worse by allowing four unearned runs with Hanson on the hill.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 6 in Baseball History...

1877 - The National League rule calls for the home team to submit three names of approved local men for each game, with the visiting team choosing one at random to be umpire. Today in Louisville, Chicago's Cal McVey reaches into the hat and picks out a slip bearing the name of Dan Devinney, who accused St. Louis of trying to bribe him five days earlier. Disgusted, McVey then grabs the hat and finds that all three slips have Devinney's name on them. The incensed White Stockings demand a new umpire and then snap the Grays' six-game winning streak 7-2.

1894 - Sparks from a plumber's torch start a blaze that destroys the grandstand at Philadelphia's Huntingdon Grounds, better known as Baker Bowl. The grandstand will be rebuilt with concrete and steel.

1901 - The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues is formed to help the minor leagues protect their interests.

1904 - Lefthander Nick Altrock of the White Sox (their new nickname) handles thirteen fielding chances, the modern major league record for pitchers. He will finish the year with 49 putouts, an American League record for pitchers.

1908 - Johnny Lush pitched a six-inning no-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0. It was Lush's second no-hitter against the Dodgers.

1936 - For the first time in the 20th century, the first two batters in a game — Roy Johnson and Rabbit Warstler of the Boston Bees — lead off with home runs. They do it off Cubs pitcher Tex Carleton.

1941 - Detroit pitcher Al Benton collects two sacrifices in one inning, a major league record.

1949 - Luke Appling appears as shortstop in his 2,154th game, surpassing Rabbit Maranville's major league mark. Appling will play in 2,218 games at shortstop.

1952 - Satchel Paige, at 47, became the oldest player in major league history to pitch a complete game or a shutout when he beat Virgil Trucks and the Detroit Tigers, 1-0, in 12 innings.

1953 - Ted Williams is back in a Red Sox uniform after military duty in Korea. He will finish with 13 home runs and a .407 mark.

1967 - Against Chicago, Brooks Robinson of the Orioles hits into the fourth triple play of his career for a major league mark.

1972 - Atlanta's Hank Aaron hit his 660th and 661st career home runs to break Babe Ruth's record for most home runs with one club. The 661st came in the 10th inning to give the Braves a 4-3 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds.

1973 - Roberto Clemente and Warren Spahn head the list of new inductees at Cooperstown. Clemente is the first Latin-born player to achieve membership at Cooperstown.

1981 - After a seven-week strike, major league baseball players approved a split-season format. The New York Yankees, Oakland A's, Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers were declared the first-half champions and automatically qualified for the divisional series.

1982 - Just five days after hitting three home runs in a 5-4 loss to the Twins, Doug DeCinces hits three more home runs in a 9-5 win at Seattle. DeCinces is the first player other than Ted Williams to hit three home runs in a game twice in the same season.

1985 - For the second time in five years the Players' Association stages a midseason strike. But unlike the 50-day strike that interrupted the 1981 season, this one will be settled by the following day and all 25 canceled games will be made up.

1986 - The Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles, 13-11, in a record-setting battle of grand slams. Texas' Toby Harrah hit a grand slam in the second inning before Larry Sheets and Jim Dwyer connected for grand slams in Baltimore's nine-run fourth.

1988 - Oakland Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco became the 11th player in major league history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in a season. Canseco, with 31 homers, stole second base with one out in the ninth inning for his 30th as the A's edged the Seattle Mariners, 5-4.

1988 - Rich Gossage got his 300th save as the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-4

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tulsa Shock at Los Angeles Sparks (-8, 161.5)

The Shock haven’t had much to celebrate in their first season since moving from Detroit to Tulsa. But one of those rare moments took place last Tuesday, when the WNBA’s worst team defeated its best.

The Shock rocked the Seattle Storm, 84-75, as 12.5-point home underdogs, picking up just their fifth win of the 2010 season. Tulsa forced 25 turnovers, shot 50 percent from beyond the arc and made 14 steals and four blocks, snapping a seven-game losing skid.

"Just so excited," Scholanda Robinson told reporters. "A little bit of relief, but it just feels really good. We put a great game together from beginning to end. It is just domination. We beat the best team in our league and it just shows what a great team we are. When we come to play our game and we play for 40 minutes, we can beat anybody."

Tulsa takes that momentum to Los Angeles Friday to face the 9-17 L.A. Sparks, who sit in front of the Shock in the basement of the Western Conference.

Los Angeles needed overtime to defeat Tulsa in their last meeting, sneaking away with an 86-83 win at home but failing to cover as a 7-point favorite on July 20. The Sparks are coming off a win and cover against the Chicago Sky Wednesday, but are just 3-7-2 against the spread inside the Staples Center this season.

          Pick: Tulsa

Atlanta Dream at Indiana Fever (-5.5, 162)

The Indiana Fever were challenging for the top spot in the Eastern Conference until hitting a three-game slide, leaving them looking for answers against the Atlanta Dream, the only team ahead of them in the standings.

Indiana dropped its third game in a row to the New York Liberty Tuesday, falling 82-72 as a 7.5-point home favorite. The Fever were the best home team in the WNBA before this slump, but have dropped their last two outings inside Conseco Fieldhouse to fall to 10-4 at home (7-7 ATS).

“(We have to) try to figure out a way to win. Pull together as a team. Find out whatever we’re lacking and start to sew it up as nice as we can and try to start peaking here pretty soon, right now before we get to the playoffs,” forward Ebony Hoffman told the media following the team’s third straight defeat.

The Fever’s top-ranked defense, which has allowed only 72.1 points against per game this season, has given up an average of 83 points during this skid, including 90 points to Atlanta in a 90-74 thrashing just last weekend.

The Dream and Fever have split their four previous meetings this season, but Atlanta holds the edge at the sportsbook, going 3-1 against the spread in those games.

          Pick: Atlanta

                      Daily Sports Roundup: August 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Angels pay a visit to Detroit to take on the Tigers, while the Giants battle with the Braves, and the CFL offers up a pair of games.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Friday has the White Sox at Baltimore, Minnesota at Cleveland, Boston at the Yankees, Tampa Bay at Toronto, Texas at Oakland, Kansas City at Seattle, and the Angels at Detroit. Jered Weaver (10-7, 3.04 ERA) is slated to take on Justin Verlander (12-6, 3.74 ERA) in that Angels/Tigers matchup. Righthander Weaver is coming off a dominant win over the Rangers in which he gave up just one unearned run on four hits over seven innings of work, while fanning seven. Righthander Verlander took a no-decision against the Red Sox in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering three runs on six hits in seven innings of work that day, and fanning eight.

Over in the National League on Friday it'll be Cincinnati at the Cubs, Colorado at Pittsburgh, St. Louis at Florida, the Mets at Philadelphia, Houston at Milwaukee, San Diego at Arizona, Washington at the Dodgers, and San Francisco at Atlanta. Barry Zito (8-6, 3.38 ERA) is expected to get the ball for the Giants on Friday, while the Braves counter with Tommy Hanson (8-8, 3.83 ERA). Lefthander Zito had to settle for a no-decision against the Dodgers in his last start despite giving up just one run on three hits over his seven innings of work. Righthander Hanson fell to the Reds last time out, allowing two runs (one earned) over 7 1-3 innings; Atlanta is 0-4 in his last four outings.

                      Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Canadian Football League kicks off the sixth week of its season with two games on Friday: Saskatchewan at Montreal, and Toronto at Edmonton. The Roughriders (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS) beat Hamilton 37-24 at home last week, while the Alouettes (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS) trounced Toronto 41-10 last time out. Montreal is listed as the 5-point home favorite for Friday, with the total at 60.5. The Argonauts (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from their Week 5 beating, while the Eskimos (1-4 SU, 2-3 ATS) slipped past British Columbia 28-25 at home last week. The oddsmakers have listed the Eskimos as 6-point home favorites for this Week 6 matchup, with the total set at 51.5.

Finally, there are four games on the WNBA's schedule for Friday, with Washington at New York, San Antonio at Phoenix, Tulsa at Los Angeles, and Atlanta at Indiana. The Dream and Fever just met in Atlanta on Sunday, with the home side picking up a 90-74 victory in that contest as a 2.5-point favorite. Iziane Castro Marques led the way with 22 points for the Dream on that day, while Angel McCoughtry was good for 20 points in the win. Tamika Catchings had a team-high 24 points in Sunday's losing cause for Indiana.

                        Friday's six-pack

The six most romantic cities in America, according to Yahoo.com

                        6) San Diego-- Surprisingly, the second biggest city in California.

                        5) Santa Fe-- Founded by Spanish missionaries a decade before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

                        4) New Orleans-- Hard to believe its been five years since Katrina.

                        3) San Francisco-- You're just over bridge from an A's home game!!!!!

                        2) Charleston-- 86 miles from Myrtle Beach, 84 miles from Savannah, 65 miles from Hilton Head.......lot of golf in this area.

                        1) Honolulu-- Excellent public transportation system makes it easier to explore the entire island.

                        *****************************************

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day.......

                        13) Saints were 3.5/4-point favorites over Minnesota in Week 1 opener at the Superdome, but with Favre now expected not to play that night, the books expect the Saints to be wind up as an 8-point favorite at kickoff.

                        12) Cincinnati is expected to bring Cuban lefty Aroldis Chapman up to big leagues soon to bolster their pitching; Chapman is said to have hit 103 mph in the minors. Me? I think the radar guns are on steroids.

                        11) How managers help/hurt their teams: Wednesday, Brian McCann was up with two on, two out in fifth inning with Braves up, I think it was 3-2. Met pitcher Pelfrey was struggling mightily. McCann was 17-36 in his career against Pelfrey, but manager Manuel still left him in to pitch.

Now McCann is 18-37. That was as graphic an example as I can come up with as to how amanager cost his team a chance to stay in the game.

                        10) Another football season is approaching, still no NFL Network on my TV, since Time-Warner and NFL couldn't agree on what day it is. Jerks.

                        9) Is it me, or have their been lot more concussions in baseball this year?

                        8) Rough week for catchers, as Russell Martin, Carlos Santana and young Rockies prospect Wilin Rosario are all out for the year with injuries after getting hurt, all happening this week.

                        7) Has to be tough on foreign players coming to this country to play, but more at the minor league level, since big league clubs all have lot of money for translators, or the player himself can bring one over. For guys in minor league baseball, though, it has to be tough riding buses when the language being spoken isn't yours. I know I wouldn't want to do it.

                        6) Georgia Bulldogs have ten starters back on offense, but the one starter who is new will ne the QB; expect Dawgs to run the ball a lot.

                        5) Michigan was -10/-12 in turnovers the last two years when they were an amazingly bad 8-16. Lot of pressure on Rich Rodriguez this season.

                        4) Big 11 has decided that Lucas Oil Field in Indy will be site of the very first Big 11+1 football championship game in the fall of 2011. Nebraska is the new kid on the block; once they join, the title game is on.

                        3) If you looked at the season-long win-loss over-under prop for Eagles, you would see that the over is 8-2-1 in the last 11 seasons, meaning that Andy Reid gets most out of his team, exceeding expectations consistently. Andy Iskoe provided someone I follow on Twitter with that info.

                        2) Fifty years ago, Eagles won their last NFL title, beating the Packers; it is no coincidence that Philly opens its 2010 season, fifty years later, with a home game against Green Bay.

                        1) I live in Albany, 148 miles north of New York City, 140 miles west of Boston; bars in this area make a killing when Bronx-Boston play, since they're the two most popular teams in the area. Me? I'd rather get locked in a closet with my laptop, a pizza and the Pirates-Rockies game
