Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Diamondbacks at Phillies: Phillies opened as -170 favorites but are listed as low as -150 at some books.

Argonauts at Alouttes (CFL): Alouttes opened as 10.5 but have dropped to 9.5. Total opened at 52.5 but it has jumed to 53.5.

Silver Stars at Mystics (WNBA): Total opened at 147.5 but has slipped to 147.

Lynx at Mercury (WNBA): Total opened at 186 and has climbed as high as 187 at some books.

    Weather to watch

Cardinals at Mets: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Diamondbacks at Phillies: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

    Who's hot

Giants have won seven of their last nine.

Rangers have won seven of their last nine.

Phillies have won six in a row.

Dodgers have won five of their last six.

Rays have won five of their last six.

    Who's not

Rockies have lost seven in a row.

Orioles have lost six of their last seven.

Diamondbacks have lost five in a row.

Royals have lost five of their last six.

Cardinals have lost four of their last five.

    Key stat

64-23 - Combined score for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles in their 11 meetings this season, all won by the Blue Jays. It's the longest winning streak for Toronto against any team since 1999, when they won 13 in a row against, you guessed it, the Orioles.

    Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

The Philadelphia Phillies continue to lose firepower with outfielder Shane Victorino's move to the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. Victorino suffered the injury during Tuesday's 9-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was 2-for-4 in the game and is batting .250 with 15 home runs and 53 RBIs this season for the Phillies, who are also without Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley.

    Game of the day

    Dodgers at Padres (-140, 6.5)

    Notable quotable

"Whether he was mentally checked out or just wasn't quite into it down the stretch, he wasn't the same guy. I think everybody saw that, but no one wanted to acknowledge it."

Toronto Raptors president and GM Bryan Colangelo said of Chris Bosh, who signed with the Miami Heat after seven years in Toronto. Colangelo also questioned Bosh's toughness by taking off six more games for an injury after he had already been medically cleared to play.

    Tips and notes

The Kansas City Royals set a dubious club record this week by allowing 42 runs in a three-game stretch - falling 12-6 to the Yankees before being blown out by the Twins 19-1 and 11-2. Thursday's opponent, the Baltimore Orioles, haven't fared much better, allowing 27 runs during that same span. Obviously both teams have played in three consecutive overs, and the number for their matchup is 9.5.

Tiger Woods has decided to enter next week's Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, where he is the defending champion and a seven-time winner. Woods won last year by rallying to become the first player to win a PGA Tour event seven times on the same course. He has won every year except for 2008, when he missed the second half of the season following knee surgery. Woods will once again be a heavy favorite to get his first PGA Tour win of the season and could be a good place for him to get on a roll one week before the PGA Championship.

Laurent Blanc said he will quit if he is unable to guide France through qualifying for Euro 2012. He might want to get his pink slip ready. Blanc replaced Raymond Domonech, who was fired after France went winless in the World Cup amid a player mutiny. He suspended all 23 players from the World Cup team for next month's friendly against Norway and must name his new roster by Aug. 5. France has fallen from an 8/1 pick to win the Euro Cup to 14/1.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Chicago White Sox (-165, 8.5)

The Mariners must leave their bats back in Seattle whenever they got on the road. The M's have scored just 14 runs in their six away games since the All-Star break.

They've been particularly poor at the plate when facing righthanders, batting just .193 over their last 10. That plays right into the right hand of White Sox's starter Freddy Garcia, who has just one win over his last five starts but has pitched well in all except his last.

"There's nothing you can do," the 11-year veteran said following his last outing. "Continue to do your thing, the little things, make the pitches when you need them and go from there."

The M's, who are 1-7 in their last eight stops in Chicago, counter with the inexperience of spot starter David Pauley, who is 0-5 in his brief career.

The righthander is 0-2 this season and has yet to go deeper than six innings - bad news for a struggling bullpen.

      Pick: White Sox

Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-150, 8)

It's been one month since Madison Bumgarner made his season debut and he has already developed into a quality starter in that short period of time.

Bumgarner's last five starts have all come on the road and he is 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA over that span. He allowed just five hits and two runs over seven innings in his last outing against the Diamondbacks.

"I just try to relax, and when stuff starts to happen, I just slow it down a little bit," the rookie lefthander said. "I feel like I've done a pretty good job of that."

Conversely, the Marlins are 1-4 in Anibel Sanchez's 1-4 last five starts and he hasn't earned a win since June 22. The righthander has allowed 12 runs over his last 16 innings of work.

The Marlins are batting just .226 against lefties in their last 10 while the Giants are pounding righties to the tune of .279 over that span. The Giants are 4-1 against the Marlins this season.

      Pick: Giants

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Mat Latos, San Diego Padres (11-4, 2.48 ERA)

A huge part of the Padres’ surprise success in 2010 has been the impressive play of Latos. The right hander has pitched his way into Cy Young talks, especially his recent performances. Latos is 6-0 in his last seven starts, including winning three straight heading into Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He returned from 16 days on the DL in his last trip to the bump, giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings of work for a 9-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

Vin Mazzaro, Oakland Athletics (6-2, 3.45 ERA)

The A’s young righty hasn’t tasted defeat in five games, going 4-0 with a slim 2.12 ERA in that span. He has allowed more than three earned runs in just two of his 10 starts this season and is coming off a solid appearance against the Chicago White Sox last weekend. He went six innings, giving up only two runs on three hits for a 10-2 win Saturday.

      Slumping

Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers (4-8, 5.55 ERA)

The Tigers righty didn’t pitch terrible in his last trip to the mound, putting in a quality start against the Toronto Blue Jays. But, Porcello did walk four batters and missed out on getting his first MLB win since May 23. He was called up from the minors to pitch in a doubleheader versus the Cleveland Indians two weeks ago, giving up only one run on six hits in eight innings of work. However, he was dealt another no-decision in a 2-1 loss. His control has been off and on since returning to the bigs.

      Ubaldo Jimenez (15-2, 2.75 ERA)

Jimenez was once a shoe-in to win the NL Cy Young. But after his last four starts, the Rockies righthander has fallen off his record pace. Jimenez is just 1-1 in that span after allowing 18 total runs. In his last appearance, he was knocked around for six runs on only three hits while walking six batters in just two innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

      Debuting

Dustin Moseley, New York Yankees (0-0, 4.22 ERA)

The injury to Andy Pettitte has forced the Yankees to hand the ball to 28-year-old Moseley for Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Indians. Moseley has worked exclusively out of the bullpen since joining the big-league club in early July. He got in just under five innings of work against the Kansas City Royals this weekend, giving up only one hit while striking out and walking one batter. He is 8-7 with a 5.41 ERA during his MLB career, the past four years spent with the Los Angeles Angels.

Joe Saunders, Arizona Diamondbacks (6-10, 4.62 ERA)

Saunders gets thrown to the wolves in his first start for the D-backs. The lefthander was dealt from Los Angeles earlier this week and will now face one of the toughest lineups in baseball. Saunders did leave L.A. on a high note, going seven innings and allowing only one run on seven hits in a 1-0 loss to the Texas Rangers. He’s faced the Phillies only once before, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings during interleague action while with the Angels back in June 2008.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 29 in Baseball History...

1900 - With all the National League teams in the east, and no Sunday games allowed, one-hundred players gather in New York. Their demands are: release of players who are not going to be used rather than farming them out, and players to share in the purchase price when they are sold.

1908 - Rube Waddell struck out sixteen as the St. Louis Browns beat the Philadelphia A's 5-4.

1909 - National League president Harry Pulliam, despondent over his inability to handle the problems and controversies of the league, dies of a self-inflicted pistol wound.

1911 - Joe Wood of the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Browns with a 5-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader. Wood fanned twelve and allowed three baserunners.

1915 - At 41, Honus Wagner becomes the oldest player in this century to hit a grand slam. It is inside the park against Jeff Pfeffer of Brooklyn in an 8-2 win. The record will stand until Tony Perez hits a grand slam on May 13, 1985, one day short of his 43rd birthday.

1921 - As part of Cleveland's 125th anniversary celebration, Cy Young, 54, makes a two-inning appearance on the mound at Old-Timers' Day. Chief Zimmer, 60, is his catcher.

1928 - The Cleveland Indians scored eight runs in the first inning and nine more in the second and went on to beat the New York Yankees 24-6 at Dunn Field.

1955 - Smoky Burgess of the Cincinnati Reds hit three home runs and drove in nine runs in a 16-5 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Crosley Field.

1978 - A surprise announcement at Old-Timers Day in Yankee Stadium: Billy Martin will return to manage the Yanks in 1980. The fans go wild with joy.

1983 - Steve Garvey's consecutive-game streak ends at 1,207 when he dislocates his left thumb in a home-plate collision with Braves pitcher Pascual Perez. The injury keeps him from playing the second game of the doubleheader.

1996 - Tom Lasorda calls it quits after twenty seasons as manager of the Dodgers following a heart attack and an angioplasty procedure in June. Bill Russell takes over for the man who won two World Series, four National League pennants and seven division titles.

2000 - Eddie Taubensee hit a game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth and homered again in the eleventh to lead Cincinnati to a 4-3 win over Montreal.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Silver Stars at Washington Mystics (-7.5, 147)

The Silver Stars’ postseason plans are unraveling following back-to-back losses.

San Antonio fell to third in the Western Conference at 8-15, losing 77-72 to the New York Liberty on Tuesday. It was the team’s seventh loss in the past 10 outings.

"We've lost four or five games in the last stretch to a one-possession game," guard Becky Hammon told reporters. "It's tough, we're having to battle through some things and we're just not closing well."

Hammon has struggled to match her season scoring average in the past two games, scoring 10 and eight points respectively in those losses. She is just 5-for-18 from the field in that span after averaging 13.5 points on nearly 41 percent shooting this summer.

        Pick: Washington

Minnesota Lynx at Phoenix Mercury (-9, 187)

The Mercury are licking their wounds after a heartbreaking loss to the first-place Seattle Storm Tuesday. Phoenix watched an 18-point halftime lead disappear, losing 91-85 and cementing their place as the second-best team in the Western Conference.

"I don't see them losing another game the rest of the season, really," a defeated Diana Taurasi told the media after scoring 27 points in a losing effort.

Tuesday’s defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for the Mercury and sends the team home on a down note with a hungry Lynx squad coming to the U.S. Airways Center Thursday.

Minnesota nearly upset Phoenix last weekend, losing 127-124 in double overtime – the second-highest scoring game ever in WNBA history.

        Pick: Minnesota

                  Daily Sports Roundup: July 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays host the Tigers, the Pirates play on the road versus the Rockies, and the PGA Tour takes to the links at The Greenbrier Classic.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League has five games on tap for Thursday, with the Yankees at Cleveland, Oakland at Texas, Baltimore at Kansas City, Seattle at the White Sox, and Detroit at Tampa Bay. The Tigers will send Rick Porcello (4-8, 5.55 ERA) to the mound on Thursday, while the Rays counter with David Price (13-5, 2.90 ERA). Thursday's six-pack

Some little-known facts about the human body

-- Every person has a unique tongue print, much like a fingerprint.

-- Humans shed 1.5 pounds of skin each year.

-- Your nose can remember 50,000 different scents.

-- Air from a sneeze travels as fast as 100 mph.

-- The average human head has 100,000 hair follicles; mine brings that average down an awful lot.

-- 11 days is the most a human can go without sleep

                    *********************************************

Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

                    13) Always wonder why guys like Derrek Lee reject trades from a losing team to a contender; Lee vetoed a trade to the Angels Wednesday.

                    12) Orioles are 0-12 against Toronto this year; considering they also have 57 games against Boston/Tampa Bay/Bronx.....well, its hard to describe their plight as anything other than hopeless.

                    11) Off-Track Betting has a truck in downtown Albany where people can go to bet horses on their lunch hour. Seriously. Kind of like Good Humor Man for gambling.

                    10) Roy Halladay is on pace to toss 274 innings this year, most in majors since Dave Stewart threw 275.5 IP in 1988.

                    9) Six of Alabama's 12 opponents this season have the week before their date with the Crimson Tide off. That'll make it a little harder for Bama.

                    8) Northwestern has never been in the NCAA hoop tournament; they're supposed to have a good team this winter, but one of their best players gave up playing for the Wildcats this week, just because he didn't want to play anymore. Its a free country, but lot of guys would give eye teeth to play one more season of ball, and this guy is giving his last year up. Gotta feel for Wildcat coach Bill Carmody, who is a good coach.

                    7) MLB is looking at starting the 2011 season on a Friday, and ending it on a Wednesday, which would mean the '11 playoffs would start on the weekend, which seems like a good idea.

                    6) White Sox are 17-1 in their last 18 home games.

                    5) Florida's Chris Coghlan is out for six weeks after tearing meniscus in his knee while trying to hit a teammate with a pie during an interview on TV. He joins Kendry Morales/Mat Latos on the '10 bizarre injury list.

                    4) Edwin Jackson threw 149 pitches in his no-hitter at Tampa June 25; Arizona's manager was fired before his next start. Jackson is 1-4, 7.90 in his five starts since the no-hitter.

                    3) How did this Tony Hayward guy from BP not get fired before this?

                    2) When you get a chance, say a prayer for Bob Bratkowski- he's going to have a long year. Bob is the Bengals' offensive coordinator, and now he's in charge of VH1's favorite recruiting corps. Good luck, Bob.

                    1) Odd stat of the day: Reds have been shut out in six of their 16 Sunday games, including the last three in a row.
