Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Rockies at Marlins: Marlins opened at -115 and have skyrocketed to as high as -220.

Nationals at Reds: Reds opened at 100 but have jumped to -200 at most books.

Padres at Braves: Total opened at 8 and has slipped to 7.5 at most books.

Phillies at Cardinals: Total opened at 8.5 and has plummeted to 7 at most books.

Brewers at Pirates: Total opened at 9 and has dipped to 8 at most books.

Tiger-Cats at Alouttes: Montreal opened at -9 but has been bet down to a 7-point fave. The total has grown from 52 to 53.

    Weather to watch

Rockies at Marlins: 10 percent chance of rain, 16 mph wind blowing in from center field.

Nationals at Reds: 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.

    Who's hot

Giants have won seven of their last eight.

Athletics have won five in a row.

Rangers have won five of their last six.

Cardinals have won seven in a row.

    Who's not

Tigers have lost seven in a row.

Nationals have lost six of their last seven.

Mariners have lost six of their last seven.

Dodgers have lost seven of their last eight.

Royals have lost seven of their last eight.

    Key stat

$22 million - Amount in endorsements Tiger Woods has lost this year following revelations about his extramarital affairs, according to Sports Illustrated's annual list of the wealthiest athletes. But before you start to pass the Nike hat for Tiger, he remains the top-ranked player for the seventh straight year and still stands to earn more than $90 million in 2010.

    Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Tampa Bay Rays leftfielder Carl Crawford has what trainers are calling a "testicular contusion" after getting hit in nuts by a pick-off throw to first on Tuesday. This was not your typical rack of the sack. He missed Wednesday's game and could be out of the lineup longer while he sits out (probably with a bag of frozen peas between his legs). Oddly, Crawford says he still won't wear a cup when he returns. He is batting .350 with 11 homers and 51 RBIs.

    Game of the day

    Angels at Rangers (-160, 8)

    Notable quotable

"The agents that do this, and I hate to say this, but how are they any better than a pimp? I have no respect for people who do that to young people. None. How would you feel if they did it to your child?"

Alabama football coach Nick Saban said at Wednesday's SEC Media Days after reports that one of his players is being investigated by the NCAA for attending an agent's party in Miami.

    Tips and notes

The ailing Boston Red Sox are slowly starting to get healthy and help is on the ride for their current slide in the AL East. They will activate outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the 15-day disabled list Thursday. Hermida is hitting .217 with five home runs and 27 RBIs in 45 games this season. Utility infielder Jed Lowrie also is back to help fill in the blanks and pitchers Clay Buchholz and Josh Beckett are back in the starting rotation after spending some time on the DL.

Just 24 hours into their first gathering and Team USA already has lost three players for next month's FIBA World Basketball Championships. David Lee suffered a fractured finger in the first outing and will not return, Amare Stoudemire is out because he was unable to insure his new $100 million contract with the New York Knicks and Robin Lopez pulled out to continue rehab on his back injury. Team USA is already without any members of the 2008 Olympic gold-medal team yet it remains a -212 favorite to win the Worlds. Don't be surprised if the players and odds keep dropping.

Kobe Bryant has tied Tiger Woods as America's favorite sports figures, according to a Harris Interactive poll. Following Bryant's second straight NBA title and Woods' struggles since his sex scandal, Kobe leaped from fourth place on the 2009 list to claim a share of the title with Woods, who has held the top spot since 2006. While the survery is basically tabloid fodder, it does indicate the impact of popularity in betting. Woods has been favored to win all seven tournaments he has competed in this season and has won none and the Lakers are 5/2 favorites to three-peat as NBA champions next season.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Florida Marlins (-200, 7)

The mile-high Rockies have come back to sea level in the second half and may be wearing down after playing for a week in the heat of Miami and Cincinnati.

They run into buzzsaw tonight in Josh Johnson, who has pitched 12 consecutive games without allowing more than two earned runs in a game. He leads the league in ERA (1.63) and has allowed only one earned so far in July. He has an unshakable "next-pitch" mentality.

"You just go out there and give your team a chance to win," said Johnson, who struck out seven without issuing a walk in his last outing. "That's all you can do. You can't do anything else. You can't do anything more. When you try to do more, that's when you might get yourself in trouble."

Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa has struggled with his fastball and breaking ball since coming back from a finger injury. The Marlins are batting 31 points higher against lefties than righties.

      Pick: Marlins

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (140, 8)

Cliff Lee seems to get stronger the longer he stays with a team, which makes it a shame he is suiting up for his third different squad in less than a year.

Lee is 0-2 in his first two starts with the Rangers following his trade from Seattle, but you may recall it took him a while to get rolling with the Mariners in April too. The veteran doesn't seemed to be fazed by the slow start.

"I would have liked to come in and done a better job right off the bat, but it is what it is," Lee said. "It's a done deal now. All I can do is come in and prepare for the next time. Hopefully the results are better."

The Angels counter with Jared Weaver who has not been at his best lately. The Rangers are batting .282 against righthanders and have won five of their last six since the All-Star break.

      Pick: Rangers

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees (12-3, 3.13 ERA)

New York’s hefty lefty has not tasted defeat since May 23, going 8-0 in his 10 starts since. Sabathia is coming off a no-decision against the Tampa Bay Rays in his last start, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. He has a 2.48 ERA and 61 total strikeouts in his last 10 appearance.

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (14-5, 2.02 ERA)

The Cardinals' budding right hander has won four straight starts heading into Thursday. He hasn’t allowed a run in his past two appearances, limiting opponents to only 11 hits over 14 innings pitched. Wainwright has been stellar inside Busch Stadium this year, posting a 10-0 mark with a slim 1.31 ERA.

      Slumping

Jorge De La Rosa, Colorado Rockies (3-2, 6.16 ERA)

De La Rosa hasn’t been the same since a finger injury in April. In his two starts back in the bigs, the Rockies lefty has gotten pounded. He’s given up 11 runs on 14 hits in just under eight innings of work. His last start lasted only 3 1-3 innings, allowing six runs and three homes runs.

      Ryan Rowland-Smith, Seattle Mariners (1-9, 6.18 ERA)

Rowland-Smith hasn’t won a game since mid-June and is 0-3 in his last five starts. He’s given up nine runs in just over seven innings during his last two trips to the bump, most recently getting lit up for five runs on eight hits in a no-decision to the Los Angeles Angels. The Aussie hurler gave up a home run in the 7-6 loss, giving him 18 dingers allowed in 2010.

      Returning

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (8-4, 2.58 ERA)

The Brewers' All-Star pitcher missed the Midsummer Classic due to a left oblique strain that found him on the 15-day DL. He hasn’t pitched in the bigs since July 4, going 2-1 in his last four starts. The righthy is 2-0 vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010, posting 11 shutout innings and 14 strikeouts during those two starts.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 22 in Baseball History...

1905 - Weldon Henley of the Philadelphia Athletics pitched a no-hitter, defeating the St. Louis Browns 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. It was the highlight of Henley's 4-11 season.

1906 - Bob Ewing pitched the Cincinnati Reds to a 10-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies without a single assist registered by his teammates.

1926 - Cincinnati had four triples in an 11-run second inning as the Reds beat the Boston Braves, 13-1. Curt Walker hit two in the inning to tie an National League record.

1962 - Floyd Robinson of the Chicago White Sox had six singles in six at-bats in a 7-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

1967 - The Atlanta Braves used a Major League record five pitchers in the ninth inning of a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The pitchers were Ken Johnson, Ramon Hernandez, Claude Raymond, Dick Kelley and Cecil Upshaw.

2000 - Seattle's 13-5 win over Texas was interrupted for fifty-four minutes when a rainstorm drenched fans at Safeco Field and the $518 million stadium's roof wouldn't close because of a computer problem. The roof finally began closing about twenty minutes later.

        WNBA

        Thursday, July 22

        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Sparks at Indiana Fever (-10.5, 152.5)

It seems the only team the Sparks are capable of beating these days are the sad-sack Tulsa Shock.

Los Angeles needed overtime to get past the WNBA’s worst team Tuesday, defeating Tulsa 86-83 for just its second win in the past six games. The Sparks’ other victory in this span came against none other than the Shock last Tuesday.

"We shouldn't have even been in that position to begin with," L.A. guard Ticha Penicheiro told reporters of overtime. "I think we let them get back in the game. We threw the ball away and they capitalized on some easy baskets."

The Sparks blew a 16-point lead and managed only 13 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s victory.

Los Angeles has been lost since star forward Candace Parker went down with a season-ending shoulder injury last month. It is just 3-8 with a 4-7 mark against the spread since.

        Pick: Indiana

San Antonio Silver Stars at Minnesota Lynx (-4, 153.5)

After playing under the total in nine of their first 15 games, the San Antonio Silver Stars have flipped that trend and are now favoring the over in recent outings.

San Antonio is 4-1 over/under in its last five games including Tuesday’s 80-74 loss to the Seattle Storm that toppled the 150.5-point total set by oddsmakers.

The Silver Stars haven’t exploded on offense nor have they dropped their defensive intensity, keeping both around their season average. Books are obviously over-adjusting to the team’s under trend.

Over the last five outings, San Antonio’s totals are being posted at an average number of 153 points. That’s almost four points less than the average total (156.8 points) from its first 15 games of the year.

Bettors can expect another low number when the Silver Stars visit the Lynx on Thursday. Minnesota has played below the total in all but one of its last eight games, improving to 8-11 over/under on the year.

These two Western rivals have played above the total in four of their last five meetings, including an 88-66 Lynx win that finished over the 152.5-point total back on July 8 – the lone over payday in Minnesota’s last eight games.

        Pick: Over

                    Daily Sports Roundup: July 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Angels look for a win in Texas, the Cards play host to the Phillies in St. Louis, and the PGA Tour hits the links at the Canadian Open.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League offers up five games on Thursday, with Minnesota at Baltimore, Toronto at Detroit, Kansas City at the Yankees, Boston at Seattle, and the Angels at Texas. Jered Weaver (9-5, 3.16 ERA) will go up against Cliff Lee (8-4, 2.59 ERA) in that Angels/Rangers matchup. Righthander Weaver put an end to a two-game losing streak by beating the Mariners last time out; Weaver gave up just two runs on six hits over seven innings of work in that win over Seattle. Lefthander Lee had to settle for a no-decision against the Red Sox last time out despite giving up just two runs on six hits over his nine innings of work. Lee walked one and struck out six batters in that contest.

The National League schedule for Thursday then has Colorado at Florida, Washington at Cincinnati, San Diego at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, San Francisco at Arizona, the Mets at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at St. Louis. The Phillies will go with Cole Hamels (7-7, 3.63 ERA) in that last matchup, while the Cardinals counter with Adam Wainwright (14-5, 2.02 ERA). Lefthander Hamels took a no-decision against the Cubs in his last trip to the mound, surrendering just one run on eight hits over his seven innings of work. Righthander Wainwright won his fourth consecutive start last time out, holding the Dodgers scoreless on five hits over six innings of work while striking out three hitters.

                    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The golfers of the PGA Tour will tee off in another national championship this week as they compete in the Canadian Open at St. George's Golf & Country Club in Toronto. Paul Casey is set as the 15/1 Vegas favorite to win this week's tournament, with Retief Goosen and Luke Donald just behind him on that list at 16/1 odds. Sean O'Hair and Tim Clark are getting 18/1 odds this week, followed by Camilo Villegas at 22/1, and each of Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar, and Ricky Barnes at 25/1. Canadian Mike Weir sits at 30/1.

Week 4 of the Canadian Football League season kicks off on Thursday night with Hamilton at Montreal. The Tiger-Cats (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) broke into the win column with a 28-7 home victory over the Blue Bombers in Week 3; Kevin Glenn passed for 336 yards for Hamilton in that contest. The Alouettes (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) are riding a two-game winning streak, getting past the Lions 16-12 in Vancouver last week; Anthony Calvillo led the Als' attack with 297 passing yards in that win. The oddsmakers have Montreal set as the 8.5-point home favorites for Thursday, with the total pegged at 52.

Finally, there are three games on the WNBA's schedule for Thursday, with Phoenix at Tulsa, San Antonio at Minnesota, and Los Angeles at Indiana. Thursday's six-pack

-- Great news: Bob Uecker will be back broadcasting for the Brewers on Friday, three months after his heart surgery.

-- Eldrick Woods will make an estimated $90M this year, down from $128M two years ago. Sucks to be him.

-- Jimmy Collins retired after 14 years as Illinois-Chicago's basketball coach; weird time to quit, in middle of recruiting season.

-- New Mexico extended Steve Alford's contract until 2020. Thats ten years from now. He must like Albuquerque.

-- SEC football media days the next two days; good TV on ESPNU, as we start to get ready for football season.

-- Dan Haren is on pace to have the highest batting average for a pitcher with 50+ ABs since 1951. 19-freakin'-51.

Thursday's List of 13: Our weekly look at the American League

                      14) Mariners-- Figgins leads MLB 2Bs with 52 walks, but still has only .327 OB%. Felix Hernandez is now 4-1, 1.46 in his last eight starts after the pitching duel with Gavin Floyd Wednesday at Safeco.

                      13) Orioles-- No Baltimore hitter has knocked in more than 14% of baserunners this year; Corey Patterson (14.0%) leads team. Four of top six Orioles in this category are 32+ years old. Other than Markakis, Jones and Weiters, position players need an infusion of youth/talent.

                      12) Indians-- Young catcher Santana has 32 walks in 35 games; his OB% of .443 is 53 points higher than any teammate. Peralta has 30 walks, but in 354 PA (85 G). Had 6-game win streak snapped by Liriano Wednesday

                      11) Royals-- There are 13 first basemen with 150+ AB who are hitting .290+; Butler is hitting .315/.383. Moustakos/Hosmer are top prospects for Royals' future, but at some point, they need to win in the present.

                      10) Blue Jays-- Was kicking myself in butt for not adding Vernon Wells in offseason for fantasy team, but he's cooled off (.316 OB%) after his hot start. Buck leads MLB catchers with 45 RBI. Wonder where they'll turn for a new manager; they need someone who will sell some tickets.

                      9) A's-- Tuesday was just second time in Braden's 16 starts that Oakland scored 4+ runs; it was also first time in nine Braden starts that A's won-- his last win was perfect game. At 49-48, Geren deserves MOY votes.

                      8) Tigers-- Cabrera has 1.064 OPS, 82 RBI, eight more than any other 1B, 16 more than any AL 1B. Tigers got seven shutout innings from Scherzer (123 PT) Wednesday to snap long losing skid.

                      7) Twins-- Need Morneau healthy and back in lineup; Span is second in AL with 57 runs scored from leadoff spot. Minnesota is 3-9 in last dozen road games; they'll need to do better there to stay in contention.

                      6) Angels-- Napoli has 17 HR, 43 RBI and has played some 1B; he is 4th amongst catchers in slugging percentage. Kendrick has only 18 walks in 377 PA; his .318 OB% is unacceptable. Big series in Texas coming up.

                      5) Red Sox-- I'm sitting here at 2:15am watching Mets-Arizona playing in 14th inning; Mets were blanked for last eight innings by bullpen that has a chance to be the worst of last 50 years. Ollie Perez just pitched scoreless innings. Have to go outside and see if its a full moon.

                      4) White Sox--Tough loss Wednesday, as Floyd was brilliant for seven innings, Vizquel got huge hit to put Sox up 1-0 in 11th but then Jenks did not slam door and Seattle won 2-1. Sox need to trade for a new closer.

                      3) Rangers-- Hunter is 7-0, 2.09; didn't realize how strong his numbers are so I need to go retract trade offer I put in for him. Rumors are that Mark Cuban is interested in buying team; now that would be very interesting.

                      2) Rays-- They're 9-0 on road when Neimann starts. Have decent-sized lead in Wild Card race, which begs question as to what moves they'll make before July 31. They're rumored to be going after Jayson Werth.

                      1) Bronx-- If you were thinking about going to Hamilton-Saskatchewan CFL game in Regina July 31, keep in mind the game is now a sellout, so you'll need to find a scalper. Roughriders are off to a 3-0 start.
