    Daily Sports Roundup: July 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Tigers play host to the Rangers, the Giants send their ace out against the Dodgers, and the Storm look for a victory in San Antonio.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday offers up Tampa Bay at Baltimore, the Angels at the Yankees, Cleveland at Minnesota, Toronto at Kansas City, Boston at Oakland, the White Sox at Seattle, and Texas at Detroit. The Rangers are expected to go with Tommy Hunter (6-0, 2.39 ERA) in that Tuesday matchup, while the Tigers counter with Armando Galarraga (3-2, 4.45 ERA). Righthander Hunter beat the Red Sox in his last trip to the mound, giving up just two runs over 6 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Galarraga took a no-decision against the Orioles last time out, surrendering three runs on 10 hits over 6 2-3 innings. Galarraga fanned four that game.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, Colorado at Florida, Washington at Cincinnati, San Diego at Atlanta, Houston at the Cubs, the Mets at Arizona, Philadelphia at St. Louis, and San Francisco at the Dodgers. Tim Lincecum (10-4, 2.94 ERA) will get the ball for the Giants in that last matchup, while Clayton Kershaw (9-5, 3.16 ERA) takes the hill for Los Angeles. Righthander Lincecum dazzled the Mets in his most recent start, tossing nine shutout innings while giving up just six hits and striking out five batters. Lefthander Kershaw is coming off a loss to the Cardinals in which he surrendered five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4 1-3 innings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are three games on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Tulsa at Los Angeles, New York at Connecticut, and Seattle at San Antonio. The Storm improved to 18-2 (and 13-6-1 ATS) with their ninth straight win last time out, beating Minnesota 73-71 on the road. Lauren Jackson scored 26 points for Seattle in that contest. The Silver Stars snapped a three-game losing streak by knocking off Los Angeles 83-73 at home in their last matchup. Roneeka Hodges tossed in 24 points for San Antonio in that game.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Phillies at Cubs – The total for the game is not available due to the uncertainty of wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field.

Angels at Yankees – The starting pitcher for Anaheim has not been announced.

Lines to keep an eye on

Blue Jays at Royals – The total for this game has jumped from an opener of 10 to 10.5 on most boards (check out the wind below).

Phillies at Cardinals – The Red Birds opened as -215 chalk with ace Chris Carpenter on the mound but that moneyline can be found as low as -190.

White Sox at Mariners – An opening total of 7 has moved to 7.5.

      Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Red Sox at Athletics – The National Weather Service projects a 15 mph wind to blow out to center field.

Brewers at Pirates – A 50 percent chance of rain is called for.

Rays at Orioles – There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

Rangers at Tigers – The forecast calls for an 11 mph wind to blow in from center field and a 40 percent chance of rain.

Indians at Twins – There is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Rockies at Marlins – Wind gusts of up to 20 mph are expected to blow in from right-center field.

Nationals at Reds – A 50 percent chance of rain is called for.

Phillies at Cardinals – There is a 40-50 percent chance of precipitation.

      Who’s hot

San Diego has earned four straight victories (+4.10 units).

Seattle (WNBA) has won nine consecutive games, going 6-3 ATS during that stretch.

The Yankees are 8-2 over a 10-game span.

      Who’s not

Arizona is 2-8 in its last 10 games.

The Sparks (WNBA) are 1-4 SU and ATS in their last four outings.

Going into Monday, the Royals were losers of six straight.

      Key stat

39 – Number of 1-0 MLB games this season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen was not in Monday's starting lineup against the Brewers. McCutchen is listed as day-to-day with a mild sprain of the AC joint in his shoulder. He left Sunday's game after making a diving catch and landing awkwardly on his shoulder. X-rays came back negative on McCutchen, who is batting .289 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs this season. Jose Tabata started in center field Monday.

      Games of the day

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves (-165, 8)

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics (-120, 8)

      Notable quotable

"There's no way, with hindsight, I would've ever called up Larry (Bird), called up Magic (Johnson) and said, 'Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team. But things are different. I can't say that's a bad thing. It's an opportunity these kids have today. In all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys."

-- Michael Jordan said about LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh joining forces on the Heat.

      Tips and notes

      - The weather across the country has turned ominous and baseball total bettors should take note. Only two of the 15 games today could be played under the protection of a retractable roof. There is a 30 percent chance of rain or greater in eight games Tuesday and seven contests are projected to see double-digit wind gusts. Check out daily MLB weather here.

      - It’s not football season yet but futures odds are already being hit by sharps. And if you a bettor who likes backing guarantees we’ve got one for you. Dolphins majority owner Steve Ross told reporters in June that he thinks his team, “will be playing in the Super Bowl" this season. Miami went 7-9 last year, missing the playoffs, and have a regular season win total of 8.5. The Dolphins are +2000 to win the AFC in 2010 and +4500 to win Super Bowl XLV.

      - Tiger Woods experimented with a new putter and it lasted all of three tournament days. After switching to the Nike Method blade in hopes of attaining better control on the slow St. Andrews’ greens at the British Open, Woods didn’t get find the results he wanted. He needed 99 putts to get through the first three rounds of play and collected 10 three-putts in that span. On Sunday, Woods elected to go back with his Titleist Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter which had been in his bag since 1999. Tiger has been favored in every tournament he’s entered this season and hasn’t won one.

        Tuesday's six-pack

-- Ilya Kovalchuk signed a 17-year, $102M deal with the Devils; hell, if this deal plays out, I'll be 68 years old (God willing) when it ends.
-- 1930 Phillies' bullpen was worst ever, '32 A's were next; right now, the '10 Diamondbacks are the third worst bullpen ever.
-- Brandon Inge (hand) is out for six weeks; Ryan Sweeney (knee) is out for the year, as baseball injuries continue to pile up.
-- Jonathan Herrera homered for the Rockies Monday; he hadn't even hit one home run in batting practice this season.
-- Someone should tell the Mets the All-Star break is over.
-- Mike Pelfrey has now allowed 51 baserunners in his last 14.2 innings, the worst performance by any pitcher in the last 60 years!!!!

Tuesday's List of 13: Notes I scribbled on way home from Vegas

        13) Other than Times Square in NYC, walking on the Strip in Las Vegas is a unique experience; the lights, the people, the intense heat. Its something I would recommend everyone do once. Its different and fun.

        12) This was a great week to go to Vegas (every week is at least good to go); the NBA Summer League is underrated, the World Series of Poker is fascinating to see (even if it is boring as hell to watch for long), and British Open comes on at 1am Thursday/Friday morning. Its destructive to any type of sleep pattern, but there's no shortage of activity, for sure.

        11) That said, ESPN does an amazing job editing poker telecasts to make them look as good as they do. There are so many players playing, it has to be terribly difficult to isolate the best stories, especially since the best of the players rarely make it to the final table.

        10) Saturday night in Vegas was like Prom Night; tons of young people all dressed up to go out, mostly in black. Tons of energy in the air. I'll put it this way; if I had a daughter, no way she gets within 100 miles of Vegas until she turns 21.

        9) AAU basketball comes to Las Vegas this week; wouldn't want to be an AAU coach, responsible for teenagers in a place with so much temptation so close. DisneyWorld seems like a much safer place to go.

        8) Cocktail waitress/cab drivers/bartenders in Vegas are eagerly awaiting football season; things get a little slow during week in the summer there.

        7) Shuttle from airport to your hotel is a bad idea unless your hotel is on the end of the Strip near MGM. Otherwise, its an endless succession of speedbumps, stop signs and sitting in traffic. Note to self: in September, take a cab from the airport to the hotel. Quicker is better.

        6) Read today that a total of $1.5B was bet legally on World Cup soccer. How the hell do you handicap soccer? Notice I said legally-- imagine how much was bet illegally??? Wow.

        5) I'm not sold on British Open as a great event; seems like there is way too much luck involved with who wins. Weather changes happen almost every hour; some players get eliminated by when their tee time is.

        4) Was good to get back in my car and drive around tonight; its one thing I missed on vacation. That and Arnold Palmer Lite. Could not find it out west, the terrific half iced tea/half lemonade drink.

        3) Sad to see that actor James Gammon passed away last week; known as manager Lou Brown in Major League, he was also Don Johnson's dad in Nash Bridges. He also did lot of commercials with his distinctive voice.

        2) Baseball's All-Star Game is dying a slow death; they need to spruce it up-- I suggest making it US vs the World one year, then East-West for a year, then AL-NL after that. Mix it up, keep it interesting.

        1) I'm saying this for the 100th time, but having the All-Star game count for something is stupid. Really, really stupid. League that win most games in interleague play should have home field edge in World Series.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves (-165, 8)

It’s highly unlikely any analysts predicted these two teams would be leading their respective divisions at this point of the season. But here they are and both squads have discovered some offense recently.

The Braves have played to three straight overs while San Diego has cashed four in a row after averaging 8.8 runs per game during its streak. But make no mistake; the success of these clubs is a direct result of quality pitching.

“When you think about them, you think about their pitching. Their pitching is fantastic,” Derek Lowe said of the Padres’ staff which boasts the best ERA in baseball. “We're very confident in our starting pitching. It should be a great three-game pitchers' duel hopefully."

Under bettors just wet their pants. The starting pitchers in this matchup also strengthen Lowe’s prediction. There haven’t been more than eight runs scored in seven of Wade LeBlanc’s last eight starts and Jair Jurrjens has pitched two straight unders since returning from the disabled list.

The Friars are riding a four-game winning streak while Atlanta is 22-5 in its last 27 home games. So instead of trying to find a winner, the safest bet would be to take the under.

              Pick: Under

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics (-120, 8)

After five straight victories the A’s are back in AL West contention. And surprisingly, all of those wins came behind an offensive awakening.

Oakland has plated 40 runners during its streak and averaged just under seven runs per outing during a three-game sweep of the Royals.

"We did everything right in this series," said Kevin Kouzmanoff. "We're all feeling pretty good right now and we're all taking advantage of our opportunities."

The Red Sox offense has been depleted by injuries but the heart of the order consisting of Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre can still carry a team. Production from Mike Cameron and Bill Hall has also supplied Boston with some extra pop.

All three games in a series between these teams earlier this season sailed over the posted total with an average of 13.3 runs per game and no fewer than 10. Going back to last season, seven straight overs have cashed between these clubs and 10 of the last 13.

Oakland Coliseum is known as a pitchers’ park but Mother Nature will be assisting over bettors Tuesday with wind projected to blow directly out to center field at 15 mph.

              Pick: Over

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

David Bush (4-7, 4.07 ERA), Milwaukee Brewers

Bush’s numbers aren’t going to blow bettors away but here at Covers, we fully support the "Just Win Baby" philosophy of Al Davis, and Bush has done that. The former Blue Jays prospect is on a six-game, quality start streak.

He sports a 2.40 ERA during the hot run and the under has cashed in his last four outings.

Tommy Hunter (6-0, 2.39 ERA), Texas Rangers

This Texas righty is flying a bit under the radar these days with rotation members C.J. Wilson and Cliff Lee grabbing most of the headlines. Hunter has been dynamite since rejoining the big league club in early June.

The Rangers are 7-1 in his eight starts and he’s yet to allow more than three runs in an outing this season.

              Slumping

Mike Leake (6-1, 3.53 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

Leake’s drop in production was an inevitable. The kid was pitching out of his mind for the first half of the season and you’ve got to figure that right arm of his is getting tired.

The Reds don’t agree with us. Leake pitched the longest outing of his career in his last start, going 8.1 innings. He was fantastic through the first eight innings but the Phils knocked him around for five runs in the ninth inning.

He’s delivered duds in four of his last six starts and he owns a bloated 6.14 ERA over the cold streak.

              Returning

Dallas Braden (4-7, 3.83 ERA), Oakland Athletics

It seems like a long time ago that Dallas Braden threw that perfect gem. He was pretty average after the game of his career and made his way to the disabled list in the last week of June. He complained of soreness in his pitching elbow but we’re not sure if that played a role in his shaky minor league rehab start.

Braden pitched 4.0 innings, allowed three runs and was taken out of the park twice.

Seattle Storm at San Antonio Silver Stars (+5.5, 152)

The Seattle Storm have kept their winning streak rolling, despite a couple close calls in their past two games.

Seattle, which has won nine games in a row, snuck out of Phoenix with a win in triple overtime win last week and escaped Minnesota with a two-point victory over the Lynx Saturday. The road weary Storm conclude this three-game away swing in San Antonio Tuesday.

"We can't be satisfied with the way we played tonight," Seattle forward Lauren Jackson told reporters after Saturday’s win. "We need to get better. We didn't panic, and that's a great thing."

Seattle failed to cover as a 5.5-point road favorite against Minnesota, dropping to 6-3-1 against the spread on the road this season. San Antonio is coming off a 10-point win over the Los Angeles Sparks this weekend, covering as a 7-point home fave and improving to 5-4 ATS inside the AT&T Center.

Expect the Storm to long for the West Coast in this final game of their road trip before heading home for the next three contests. The Silver Stars will catch them napping.

                Pick: San Antonio

New York Liberty at Connecticut Sun (-6.5, 157.5)

The Sun scored a huge win over the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference this weekend, setting the tone for the second half of their season.

Connecticut knocked off the Atlanta Dream, 96-80, as 6-point home favorites – improving to 8-1 inside Mohegan Sun Arena (7-2 ATS). It was the first time the Sun have beaten the Dream in three meetings this season.

Connecticut got a big boost from its bench, totaling 29 points from the reserves, including 14 points from backup forward Sandrine Gruda.

"The bench gained the lead," reserve Renee Montgomery told the media. "That's not a surprise. There's very talented players coming off the bench."

The Sun have won three straight games over the Liberty at home and four of their last six meetings overall, posting a 3-2-1 ATS mark in that span.

                Pick: Connecticut

                  Guys,

After the early Tuesday morning posts, I won't be able to add anything until mid-to-late afternoon.

Due to a situation at work that I can't do anything about right now, it looks like this will happen every Monday and Tuesday for a while.

Tuesday, there are two day games in the WNBA. I'll probably have to miss posting those in time.
