    Guys,

After the early morning posts, Monday and Tuesday, I won't be able to add anything until mid-to-late afternoon.

Due to a situation at work that I can't do anything about right now, it looks like this will happen every Monday and Tuesday for a while.

There are no starts before 7:00pm et on Monday. Tuesday, there are two day games in the WNBA. I'll probably have to miss posting those in time.

      Daily Sports Roundup: July 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The O's play host to the Rays in Baltimore, and the Rockies send their Cy Young candidate to the mound on the road against the Marlins.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Monday has Texas at Detroit, Cleveland at Minnesota, Toronto at Kansas City, Boston at Oakland, the White Sox at Seattle, and Tampa Bay at Baltimore. Wade Davis (6-9, 4.69 ERA) is slated to take on Chris Tillman (1-3, 5.64 ERA) in that Rays/Orioles matchup. Righthander Davis got back into the win column last time out, holding the Indians to two runs on four hits over seven innings of work; Davis had last picked up a win on May 29. Righthander Tillman earned his first victory of the season in his last trip the mound, surrendering just one unearned run on two hits over 7 1-3 innings of work against the Rangers. Tillman fanned three that game.

Over in the National League on Monday it'll be Philadelphia at St. Louis, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, Washington at Cincinnati, Houston at the Cubs, the Mets at Arizona, San Francisco at the Dodgers, and Colorado at Florida. The Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez (15-1, 2.20 ERA) will match up against the Marlins' Anibal Sanchez (7-6, 3.66 ERA) in that last contest. Righthander Jimenez earned his 15th win of the season in his last trip to the mound, holding the Cardinals to one run on three hits over his eight innings of work; Jimenez fanned six in that outing. Righthander Sanchez is coming off a loss to the Diamondbacks in which he gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over four innings.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

        Lines off the board

Astros at Cubs: Total is off pending the wind direction and speed at Wrigley Field.

Lines to keep an eye on

Brewers at Pirates: Bucs flipped from -105 favorites to +105 dogs.

Giants at Dodgers: Total dropped from 9.5 at opening to 9 at most books.

        Weather to watch

Rays at Orioles: 50 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Rockies at Marlins: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Blue Jays at Royals: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms, wind blowing out to left/center field at 19 mph.

Nationals at Reds: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Phillies at Cardinals: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Brewers at Pirates: 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.

        Who's hot

Rays have won 11 of their last 14.

Giants have won nine of their last 11.

Athletics have won five in a row.

Cardinals have won five in a row.

        Who's not

Mariners have lost 12 of their last 15.

Red Sox have lost eight of their last 11.

Rangers have lost 11 in a row at Tigers.

Royals have lost six in a row.

        Key stat

10-10 - The Baltimore Orioles' record over the past 20 games under interim manager Juan Samuel. The O's were 19-52 before that relative hot streak and were reportedly ready to announce Buck Showalter as their new skipper this weekend, but they may have decided to Samuel a chance to show what he can do.

        Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is listed as day-to-day with a mild sprain of the AC joint in his shoulder after making a diving catch in Sunday's game against the Houston Astros. X-rays came back negative on McCutchen, who has never spent time on the disabled list, and he is questionable for today's game against the Brewers. He has been the Bucs' primary power source, batting .289 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs this season.

        Game of the day

        Phillies at Cardinals (-125, 9)

        Notable quotable

"I'm not really thinking about boxing right now.I'm just relaxing. I fought about 60 days ago, so I'm just enjoying myself, enjoying life, enjoying my family and enjoying my vacation."

Floyd Mayweather Jr. said Sunday when asked about his failure to respond to Manny Pacquiao's midnight Friday deadline to schedule their superfight.

        Tips and notes

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ken Macha complained to an umpiring official that his players are being hit by pitchers too often. The Brewers have been hit by a big-league leading 47 pitches this season after slugger Prince Fielder was beaned twice during the weekend series against the Atlanta Braves and had another ball thrown over his head. Macha spoke with former umpire Bruce Froemming, who now serves as a special assistant in the umpires department, about the matter. Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets to grease in the form of favorable strike zones and shorter leashes for opposing pitchers.

The Baltimore Orioles have been playing respectable baseball lately and they will get an extra boost of power when they activate outfielder Luke Scott from the disabled list today. Scott has been on the disabled list with a hamstring injury since June 30, about the time the O's started to break out of their season-long slump. Scott, who is batting .274 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs, may take over at designated hitter to put some extra pop in the lineup.

The Sprint Cup Series was off this weekend so the Nationwide Series stole the headlines in more ways than one. Carl Edwards banged his way around Brad Keselowski to win Saturday night's race on the last lap and sent his nemesis spinning into a dangerous crash at the finish line. NASCAR's new "Have at it, boys!" policy toward reckless driving is starting to get out of hand and this may be the incident that forces officials to draw a line in the asphalt. If so, look for rough-and-tumble drivers like Kyle Busch to suffer from a stricter policy and cleaner drivers like Jeff Gordon to reap the benefits.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates (105, 9.5)

Some teams just seem to have other squad's number. For the Brewers that number is 42, as in the number of times they have beaten the Bucs in their last 57 meetings. Or, more recently, 11, the number of wins they have in their last 14 meetings.

That includes a three-game sweep just before the All-Star break. Outfielder Corey Hart hit a walk-off homer against the Bucs, then drilled 13 homers in the Home Run Derby's first round and has been equally hot in a split with the Braves to open the second half.

"They told me he was a streaky guy," Brewers manager Ken Macha said of Hart, who has been the subject of trade rumors. "This has been a long streak, so maybe it's a trend and not a streak."

The same is true of the Brew Crew's mastery of the Pirates. Milwaukee has averaged eight runs per game against Pittsburgh this season while the Bucs have managed just over three per outing against the Brewers.

            Pick: Brewers

Boston Red Sox at Oakland A's (100, 8.5)

After suffering their eighth loss in their last 11 outings on Sunday, the banged-up Red Sox boarded a cross-country flight to face the suddenly hot Athletics.

The A's have won five in a row, scoring 40 runs during that span. But the real reason for the A's winning ways has been pitching and defense.

"We're all on the same page that way - playing good defense and throwing strikes - it's a great formula." Oakland pitching coach Curt Young told mlb.com.

The opposite of the case for the Garnet Garters, whose starting pitchers are carrying a 6.00 ERA in their last 10 starts and the offense is batting just .228 against righties during that span.

Not to mention a disabled list long enough to fill out an AL starting lineup. With the Yankees and the Rays pulling away in the AL East, this is a bad time for the BoSox to be making a West Coast road swing.

            Pick: A's

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

Johnny Cueto (8-2, 3.42 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

The Reds are just 2-3 in Cueto’s last five starts but you can’t blame that on the righty. The Cincy ace owns a tidy 0.82 ERA since June 18 and the under is 4-1 in his last five outings.

Brett Cecil (8-5, 3.97 ERA), Toronto Blue Jays

It looks as though Cecil’s slide was just a minor blip on an otherwise impressive season. The young southpaw has allowed just two runs in his last two starts after surrendering 16 in previous three outings.

"It was just a matter of going out there and repeating my delivery, figuring out how to get the ball down after it's been up so long," Cecil told AP reporters after holding the Twins to one run over seven innings. "The ball was just flat. I didn't have downward tilt on it. Now I feel like I'm back where I need to be."

            Slumping

Carlos Silva (9-3, 3.45 ERA), Chicago Cubs

You have to wonder if the lack of run support finally got to Chicago’s best hurler. Despite five quality outings from Silva, the Cubs were 1-4 in the big righthander’s last five starts before he took the mound against the Dodgers last week.

Los Angeles tagged him for six runs before he was ejected in the second inning.

"He wasn't driving off his back leg very well," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said after the game. "He should be much better his next time out, about eight or nine days from now."

Silva would certainly appreciate a little help from the bats. The Cubs are averaging just 2.8 runs per game in Silva’s last six trips to the bump.

Mike Pelfrey (10-4, 3.58 ERA), New York Mets

Pelfrey was originally scheduled to start on Saturday but was pushed back to Monday because of a stiff neck. Mets backers can relate: The big righty’s performance lately has been a pain in the neck for them.

The Kansas native has allowed four or more runs in four of his last five starts and he hasn’t pitched a more than 4 2/3 innings in any of his last three outings.

His last appearance might have been his worst of the campaign. He allowed 15 of 25 Braves hitters to reach base.

            This Day in Baseball
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 19 in Baseball History...

1909 - Cleveland shortstop Neal Ball pulled off the first unassisted triple play in modern Major League history.

1910 - Cy Young registered his 500th career victory as the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Senators 5-4 in eleven-innings.

1927 - Ty Cobb of the Philadelphia Athletics doubled for his 4,000th hit.

1933 - Rick Ferrell of the Boston Red Sox hit a home run off brother Wes, pitching for the Cleveland Indians. Wes also homered in that game, marking the only time the two connected in the same contest.

1960 - Juan Marichal broke in with the San Francisco Giants by pitching a one-hit, 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

1974 - Dick Bosman of the Cleveland Indians pitched a no-hit, 4-0 victory over the world champion Oakland A's.

1982 - In the first Old-timer's All-Star Classic, played at Washington's RFK Stadium before 29,000 fans, the American League won 7-2. Luke Appling, 75, led off for the American League and hit a home run over the shortened left-field fence off Warren Spahn.

1989 - Cleveland's Joe Carter had the fourth three-home run game of his career, tying Lou Gehrig's American League record, and drove in six runs, powering the Indians past the Minnesota Twins 10-1.

1994 - The Kingdome, home of the Seattle Mariners, was closed after four ceiling tiles fell nearly 180 feet into the stands behind home plate. The Mariners were forced into a 22-day road trip before the season was cut short by the players' strike.

Monday's Den: Our preview of the 2010 Big 11 football season

Illinois-- One bowl game in last eight years; they're 12-28 in Big 11 under Ron Zook, 8-14 vs spread as favorite. New QB this year, but the old one wasn't any good. Have been minus in turnovers each of last seven years.

Indiana-- Non-league slate is laughably easy; they've played in one bowl since '93 (loss 49-33); their last bowl win was '91. QB completed 62% of his passes LY; he's good. Have to improve on LY's 91st on special teams.

Iowa-- Senior QB with 22 career starts (17 TD, 15 INT LY); Hawkeyes are 7-12 as home fave last four years, but 4-1 vs spread in bowls over last six years. Offensive line graduated 128 starts from LY. Last three years, they're +2/+8/+8 in turnovers. Very well-coached team.

Michigan-- 8-16 under RichRod, 2-9 as favorite; playing in USA's biggest stadium, Les Miles is here in '11 if this isn't a big year. Seven starters back on offense, eight on defense. 3-9-1 vs spread on road last three seasons.

Michigan State-- Lost last four bowls, three by 10+ points; gave up 26+ ppg in five of last six years. Don't leave Michigan until Oct 23 this year. 4-9-3 as home dog since '02. Beat Michigan back/back for first time since the Bubba Smith days (1966-67).

Minnesota-- 9 starters back on offense, just 2 on defense; played in five bowls last six years, but lost last four, three by 3 or less points. Gophers lost last 14 games vs ranked foes. Have four seniors starting on off. line.

Northwestern-- 0-5 in bowls since '00, giving up 42.4 ppg, losing in OT last two years; are 4-18 as home fave since '01, but are 7-0 as road dog in last two years. New QB was 20-34 LY (2 TD, 2 INT). Four starters on OL are back, but only one of the starters is a senior.

Ohio State-- +17/+16 in turnover margin last two years; have nine starters back on offense, four on OL. 33-19 vs spread last five years in game after a win. 12-5 vs spread since '00 in game following a loss. 4-1 choice to win BCS title game, second-favorite in country, behind Alabama.

Penn State-- 8 starters back on offense, but new QB threw only 11 passes LY; are 8-1 as road favorite last two years. 4-1 in last five bowls, winning two of three when underdog. 29-11 in Big 11 last five years. Are 0-5 vs the spread as an underdog the last four years.

Purdue-- Miami transfer Marve is new starting QB; lost three starters on OL, have no senior starters. 7-13 as home favorite last five years. Lost its top four rushers from LY. Luckily don't play Penn State/Iowa this year.

Wisconsin-- 10 starters back on offense, but just 9-15 vs spread in Big 11 last three years. Top six rushers from LY are back; this is first time since '06 Badgers have starting QB back for second year (went 12-1 that year). Won at least nine games in five of last six seasons.
