Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

    Lines off the board

Phillies at Cubs: Total is off pending the wind direction and speed at Wrigley Field.

Mariners at Angels: The line and total are currently off the board oending the Angels' announcement on a starting pitcher.

Lines to keep an eye on

Mystics at Liberty (WNBA): Total opened at 148.5 and has dropped to 146.5.

    Weather to watch

Phillies at Cubs: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Dodgers at Cardinals: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

    Who's hot

White Sox have won eight in a row.

Giants have won six of their last seven.

Phillies have won four in a row.

Mystics (WNBA) have won eight of their last nine.

    Who's not

Angels have lost six of their last seven.

Mariners have lost six of their last seven.

Rangers have lost four in a row.

    Key stat

$370 million - Amount the NBA owners claim they lost last season. Also the amount the NBA players union disputes that their numbers are off.

    Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

The Twins could be without two of their top players to start the second half. First baseman Justin Morneau is doubtful with a concussion and catcher Joe Mauer is probable with a sore shoulder. He started Tuesday's All-Star Game and may do the same Thursday, although the Twins could decide to give him another day off. The duo have 22 homers and 91 RBIs for the Twins this season so it could be a 1-2 punch to their power if both sit against the White Sox.

    Game of the day

    Dodgers at Cardinals (-130, 7)

    Notable quotable

"Playing another year probably isn't going to make a difference. The damage has already been done."

Brett Favre told Men's Journal magazine about the health factors of whether or not to he will come back for his 20th NFL season. The Vikings are awaiting the record-setting quarterback's decision.

    Tips and notes

Tiger Woods will change putters for Thursday's first round of the British Open, abandoning the Scotty Cameron putter that he has used to win 13 of his 14 majors. Woods will use the Nike Method 001 putter in an effort to cope with the slower greens of St. Andrews. Woods, who remains a 3/1 favorite to win the major for the third straight time on the Old Course, was rumored to make the switch at the Masters but opted against it because of Augusta National's speedier greens.

Atlanta Braves rookie outfielder Jason Heyward will return to the team on Thursday after serving a stint on the 15-day disabled list for a thumb injury. Heyward said he was healthy enough to play in Tuesday's All-Star Game but opted to sit out so he would be fresh for the resumption of regular-season. He is batting .251 with 11 home runs and a rookie-best 45 RBIs this season and should provide some extra power to the Braves' lineup.

An investigation by German law enforcement into soccer match-fixing involves 270 matches across nine countries and over 250 individuals, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. The report said prosecutors believe $1.9 million in bribes was given to referees and players and that $15.25 million was wagered on suspected fixed matches. Those numbers are expected to rise because investigators believe bets were spread among multiple bookmakers to mask suspected illegal activity.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals (-130, 7)

This matchup features two pitchers headed in opposite directions, with Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw going the right way and Cardinals righty Chris Carpenter going wrong.

Kershaw has won his last two starts by allowing only two earned runs and striking out 20 batters in that span. Just as impressive, he has allowed no walks in two of his last three outings, thanks in part to his relatively new repertoire of pitches.

"Two years ago I didn't even have a slider, and then last year toward the end of the season I started throwing it," Kershaw told mlb.com. "It's a lot easier pitch to throw for me as opposed to the changeup."

Carpenter, on the other hand, is 0-2 in his last two outings, surrendering 18 hits and 11 earned runs in those nine innings for an easy-to-figure but hard-to-explain 11.00 ERA during that span.

Furthermore, Kershaw has a modest .198 average in his last five starts against the Cards and is 2-0 in his last two start while. Carpenter is 0-2 in his last two against the Dodgers.

          Pick: Dodgers

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins (-110, 8.5)

The White Sox were the hottest team in baseball heading into the All-Star break. They have won eight straight and a few days off isn't likely to break their momentum.

Especially against the fellow AL Central contending Twins, who have defeated the Chi-Sox 12 times in their last 15 meetings. This one means more than the second-half opener.

The White Sox pitched their way to a half-game lead in the division, getting 27 quality starts in their last 31 outings while winning 25 of their last 30. John Danks gets the ball in an effort to keep it rolling for the South-siders.

"What we are doing right now, let's not get in the way of that," White Sox pitching coach Dan Cooper told mlb.com. "If we want to go finish the deal, our biggest games and challenges lay ahead."

The Twins counter with a struggling Kevin Slowey, who came out of the bullpen in his last appearance. The Twins have lost four of their last five and scored just 13 runs in those four defeats.

          Pick: White Sox

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Streakers

Tommy Hunter (5-0, 1.98) Texas Rangers

Hunter is 5-0 on the season and the young righty was having one of his best performance of the season before settling for a no-decision against the Orioles in his last start.

Hunter struck out a season-high seven batters to only one walk but gave up a pair of runs in the seventh before turning it over to the bullpen. He threw seven-plus innings of one-run ball against the White Sox in his previous outing on July 3, an outing more indicative of his season so far.

"He's pounding the strike zone, not making mistakes in the middle of the plate and executing his pitches," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "When you do that, you get the results he's getting. Right now he's executing very well. He's throwing strikes, keeping the ball in play. He's doing everything we'd like to see a pitcher do."

Dave Bush (4-6, 4.14) Milwaukee Brewers

Since getting knocked around for seven earned runs in only 1/3 of an inning against the Twins six weeks ago, Bush has put together six solid starts.

He is 3-1 with a 3.37 ERA during that span and his last no-decision was as strong as any of his wins, allowing only one run and five hits against the Giants.

"The last month or so, I've had good command and quite honestly, I'm just feeling stronger," Bush told mlb.com. "I feel like I've kind of gotten back to the point where I was before I got hurt."

          Slumping

          R.A. Dickey (6-2, 2.77) New York Mets

Dickey was a sizzling 6-0 until two weeks ago, but both the Braves and Marlins used one big inning to beat the knuckleballer just before the All-Star break.

Dickey is 0-2 in his last three starts, allowing 20 hits and eight earned runs in those 18 2/3 innings. The Marlins chased him after five innings and unearned runs and the Braves hammered a pair of homers in the seventh, the first of which snapped Dickey's homerless streak at 45 1/3 innings.

"Dickey was tough. I don't think we hit a ball hard until we hit the home runs," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "He's legit. He knows where the fastball is going every time. It's in or out. It's never down the middle."

With the Giants getting their first look at Dickey, don't read too much into his recent mini-slump. The Giants are hitting just .247 against righties (compared to .315 against lefties) in their last 10.

1969 - Cincinnati's Lee May hit four home runs in a doubleheader split with the Atlanta Braves. May had two home runs and drove in five runs in both games as the Reds lost the opener 9-8 but came back to win the second game, 10-4.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bet
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Mystics at New York Liberty (-2, 146.5)

The Washington Mystics put together a nice run to end the first half of the WNBA schedule and are hoping the extended All-Star layoff doesn’t slow any momentum they may have gained.

Washington won four straight games heading into the break, most recently knocking off the Tulsa Shock, 69-54, as a 6-point road favorite on July 3. The Mystics covered the spread in all four of those outings, improving to 11-4-2 ATS on the season – the most profitable mark in the Eastern Conference.

Washington has been on a tear for the past couple months. The Mystics have lost just two of their last 10 games, carrying a 7-3 record against the spread. It’s been defense getting the job done on this recent run. Washington ranks third in the league in defense, giving up only 73 points per game and holding opponents to 43 percent shooting.

New York, on the other hand, has just one win in its last three contests. The Liberty fell 82-65 to the Mystics on June 12, scoring just 12 points in the first quarter to fall behind quickly and turning the ball over 24 times in the game.

New York is only 2-4-1 against the spread at Madison Square Garden this season.

            Pick: Washington

                Daily Sports Roundup: July 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Twins play host to the White Sox, the Giants get a visit from the Mets, and St. Andrews stages the 2010 British Open Championship.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League returns from the All-Star Break with three games on Thursday, with Texas at Boston, Seattle at the Angels, and the White Sox at Minnesota. John Danks (8-7, 3.29 ERA) is expected to get the ball for Chicago in that last contest, while the Twins counter with Kevin Slowey (8-5, 4.64 ERA). Lefthander Danks tossed a gem against the Angels in his last trip to the mound, surrendering just two hits and striking out seven over nine shutout innings. Righthander Slowey took a no-decision against the Blue Jays in his last start, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings of work that day.

Over in the National League on Thursday there are four games on the schedule, with Milwaukee at Atlanta, Philadelphia at the Cubs, the Dodgers at St. Louis, and the Mets at San Francisco. New York's R.A. Dickey (6-2, 2.77 ERA) will go up against Giants ace Tim Lincecum (9-4, 3.16 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Dickey picked up a loss against the Braves in his most recent start, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits over his 6 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Lincecum earned a victory against the Brewers last time out, surrendering just one run over seven innings while fanning 10.

                Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The top golfers in the world will tee off in the British Open at St. Andrews in Scotland early on Thursday, with Tiger Woods set as the 3/1 Vegas favorite. Phil Mickelson is next on that odds list at 10/1 despite his poor track record at the tournament, with Lee Westwood at 12/1, Padraig Harrington at 15/1, and Ernie Els at 18/1. Rory McIlroy is getting 20/1 odds to hoist the Claret Jug this weekend, with U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell just behind him at 22/1 odds. Ian Poulter and Paul Casey are both at 25/1 odds to win the tournament, with defending champ Stewart Cink a longshot at 60/1.

Finally, there's one game on the WNBA's schedule for Thursday with Washington at New York. The Mystics (12-5 SU, 12-4-1 ATS) got past Tulsa 69-54 in their last game; Monique Curry tossed in 17 points for Washington that day. The Liberty (8-9 SU, 7-9-1 ATS) are coming off a 57-54 win over Chicago, with Cappie Pondexter scoring 30 points.
