Bettor's best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Twins at Tigers – The home squad opened as a -140 favorite but a few markets have moved that moneyline up to -155.

Royals at White Sox – Chicago is on fire once again and surfaced as a -180 favorite in this contest. Some shops have moved the moneyline to an even -200.

Orioles at Rangers – After Texas traded for Cliff Lee the team opened as a -225 favorite in this game but some boards are offering as high as -250 now.

Angels at Athletics – The total for this game has dropped to 8.5 after opening at 9.

    Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Orioles at Rangers – The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain throughout the game. Game 2 of the series was delayed Friday night because of rain.

Reds at Phillies – A 50-60 percent chance of precipitation is in the forecast.

Giants at Nationals – The National Weather Service projects a 40-60 percent chance of rain.

Braves at Mets – A 60 percent chance of precipitation is in the forecast throughout the game.

    Who’s hot

Going into Friday, the White Sox had won five games in a row.

The home team has won eight of the last 10 meetings in the Hamilton-Calgary series (CFL).

Spokane (AFL) has won eight consecutive games.

    Who’s not

The Angels and Mariners had both dropped four straight games heading into Friday.

Bossier (AFL) is 0-4 ATS in its last four games, getting outscored by a margin of 24.0 ppg.

Saskatchewan (CFL) is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games versus British Columbia.

    Key stat

4 – The number of wins any pitcher on the Baltimore roster has yet to achieve. If no Orioles pitcher gets to four wins before the All-Star break it would be the first team in MLB history to do so.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau is day-to-day with a minor concussion. Morneau took a knee to the head while sliding at second base in Wednesday's game. A former MVP, he is batting .345 with 18 homers and 56 RBIs this season. Bettors will want to check the Twins lineup before placing a wager to see if Morneau will be available.

    Notable quotable

"Do I think LeBron James as he leaves Cleveland will become the most hated man in Cleveland, more hated than Art Modell?. Nonsense. Nonsense. I don't think there's any basis for it. Maybe we can each take 10 foul shots. Whoever comes in second would be the most hated. I'm being sarcastic."

-- NFL owner Art Modell, who moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore in 1996.

    Tips and notes

    - The average goals scored in third-place World Cup matches since 1974 is 3.875. No match during those eight tournament games saw fewer than three goals scored. The total for the Uruguay-Spain match on Saturday sits at 2.5 (-133) so if you like historic trends the OVER would be the play. A lack of motivation in the consolation game could equate to less defense being played. Also, teams tend to play a lot of reserves in these situations and those guys are going to go all out. Top striker Suarez is also in for Uruguay and he may have something to prove.

    - The Chicago Rush (AFL) are going to be a few men short in their game Saturday versus Arizona. The UFL collected the team’s top wide receiver, Sammie Parker, because he was under contract and Chicago’s starting fullback, Robert Boss, left the team this week to go coach at his alma mater. The Rush’s No. 2 and 3 wideouts are on injured reserve. Arizona has won six of its last seven games while going 6-1 ATS in that stretch. The spread for this game has moved from Arizona +4 down to +2.

    - Here are a few key numbers for MLB totals bettors. Arizona’s Chase Field produces the most runs per game at 11.2 while Safeco Field (Seattle) yields the least at 7.1 rpg. The Rangers and Yankees are the highest-scoring teams at home (6.2 rpg) while the Pirates plate the fewest runners at home with a 3.4 rpg average. Road teams are least productive in San Francisco and New York (Mets) where they average only 3.0 runs per outing at AT&T Park and Citi Field.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners (-105, 7)

The Yankees didn’t land ace pitcher Cliff Lee, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to keep rattling off victories.

New York has put together two come-from-behind wins the last couple of games to extend its winning streak to six. Even when the Yanks aren’t converting with runners in scoring position, they are still finding ways to come out on top.

"We have confidence we're going to come up with a big hit, but we left a lot of guys on base," Alex Rodriguez said after his team went 1-for-11 with RISP in a 3-1 win over Seattle on Thursday. "We're just thinking of one opportunity to win the game."

If Brian Cashman could have pulled Lee out of his magic hat wearing pinstripes, the Yankees could have been just handed the Commissioner’s Trophy. But even without the game’s top lefty, New York is still head and shoulders above every team and will have no trouble working over King Felix and a pathetic Mariners offense Saturday.

        Pick: Yankees

Florida Marlins at Arizona Diamondbacks (-135, 10.5)

It’s not every day that a decision in one sport affects players in another, but when it involves the name LeBron James nobody is left emotionless.

Minutes before the first pitch of the Marlins-Diamondbacks game Thursday night, shortstop Hanley Ramirez help up a sign to the camera that read “Welcome LeBron.” Ramirez had a big, cheesy grin on his face and was giving the thumbs up.

"It's going to be big. It's going to be huge," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "Not only in Miami, but the whole area. Everybody knows who LeBron is. The good athletes, no matter the sport.”

We're just guessing the vibes of ecstasy the city of Miami is exuding right now will carry over into the Marlins' clubhouse. Call it a hunch, take it or leave it.

        Pick: Marlins

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Streaking

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (6-5, 3.01 ERA)

After struggling at the start of the year, the Mariners' ace is trying to head into the break on a high note. Hernandez is undefeated in his last five trips to the bump, posting a 3-0 record and giving up just seven runs over 42.2 innings of work. His most recent start lasted seven innings, in which he allowed two runs on six hits for a no decision in a 6-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (4-7, 4.43 ERA)

Floyd is another arm who got off to a slow start but has come around in his recent appearances. The ChiSox’s righty is 2-0 in his last four stars and has allowed only six earned runs over his last six trips to the mound. Floyd has won back-to-back starts for Chicago, recently giving up only one run on seven hits for a 9-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

        Slumping

Scott Kazmir, Los Angeles Angels (7-8, 5.98 ERA)

The Halos southpaw has dropped three starts in a row, serving up a total of 17 earned runs while lasting only 14.1 innings during that span. He has a strikeout-to-walk count of 9-to-9 over those three starts, most recently walking five batters and giving up seven runs – including three home runs – in a 9-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox Monday. Kazmir is blaming his lackluster slider for those poor showings.

        Returning

Matt Harrison. Texas Rangers (1-1, 4.47 ERA)

Harrison gets a crack at the Rangers’ fifth starter spot this weekend. He was brought up from Triple-A Oklahoma City and has made six big-league starts this season. In his last minor league start, the left-hander gave up three earned runs on nine hits in just under five innings of work Monday. His most recent MLB appearance was two innings of relief in which Harrison gave up one hit and walked a batter on June 27.

        This Day in Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 10 in Baseball History...

1919 - Cleveland manager Lee Fohl brings in little-used southpaw Fritz Coumbe to pitch to Babe Ruth with the bases loaded and a 7-4 lead in the ninth inning. Ruth's subsequent grand slam gives Boston an 8-7 win and gives the Indians a new manager. Center fielder Tris Speaker brings the Tribe home in second place and stays as skipper for seven years.

1920 - After banging out 11 straight hits, Tris Speaker is stopped by Tom Zachary of Washington. It's the record until Pinky Higgins of the Red Sox racks up 12 in a row in 1938.

1932 - To save train fare for the single-date appearance, Connie Mack takes along just two A's pitchers to Cleveland. Lew Krausse the A's starting pitcher, gives up four hits in the first inning and his replacement, Eddie Rommel pitches 17 innings in relief, giving up a record 29 hits, but wins 18-17. Cleveland's Johnny Burnett sets a major-league record by collecting nine hits in 11 at bats, while the A's Jimmie Foxx strokes six hits, including three home runs for a record-tying 16 total bases.

1934 - The second annual All-Star Game produces Carl Hubbell's amazing feat of striking out five future Hall of Famers in a row. After two batters reach in the first, he strikes out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx. He adds Al Simmons and Joe Cronin to start the second. He leaves with the N.L. ahead 4-0, but the A.L. rallies for a 9-7 victory.

1936 - Philadelphia's Chuck Klein hits four home runs in five at bats in a ten-inning game at Forbes Field. His final home run beats the Pirates, 9-6.

1945 - The All-Star Game at Fenway Park is canceled because of travel restrictions enforced by World War II.

1951 - Exploding for four home runs, the N.L. trounces the A.L. 8-3 at the annual All-Star Game at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. Pittsburgh slugger Ralph Kiner hits a home run for the third year in a row.

1956 - In the All-Star Game, Ken Boyer of the Cardinals makes three sparkling plays at third base and gets three hits as the N.L. defeats the A.L. 7-3. Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Stan Musial all homer. Mays' pinch-hit two-run home run off Whitey Ford is his seventh straight hit against the Yankee lefty.

1962 - Roberto Clemente has three hits as the N.L. wins 3-1 in the first of two All-Star Games of 1962 at Washington's D.C. Stadium.

1964 - Jesus Alou gets six hits against six different pitchers as the Giants beat the Cubs 10-3.

1968 - The N.L. announces plans to break into two divisions for 1969. The Eastern Division will feature New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Chicago, and St. Louis. In the Western will be Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Cincinnati, San Diego, and Atlanta.

1982 - Rangers slugger Larry Parrish hits his third grand slam of the week in a 6-5 win over the Tigers, tying the major-league record set by Detroit's Jim Northrup in 1968. Parrish also hit grand slams July 4 against Oakland and July 7 against Boston.

1984 - On the 50th anniversary of Carl Hubbell's legendary five consecutive strikeouts in the 1934 All-Star Game, N.L. pitchers Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden combine to fan six batters in a row for a new All-Star Game record in the N.L.'s 3-1 triumph. After Valenzuela whiffs Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, and George Brett in the fourth inning, Gooden, the youngest All-Star ever at age 19, fans Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon, and Alvin Davis in the fifth.

1997 - Hideki Irabu wins his much-anticipated major league debut, striking out nine in 6 2/3 innings as the Yankees defeat Detroit 10-3. The Japanese-born pitcher receives a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 51,901 at Yankee Stadium.

              Saturday

Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-2, 50.5)

The Stampeders were far from impressive last week against the worst team in the CFL. Sure, Henry Burris completed 27 of 40 pass attempts for 320 yards but he didn’t throw a single TD pass, got sacked twice and was intercepted once. Calgary better get into gear because the Tiger Cats will prove much more of a challenge than the Argos.

Kevin Glenn handled most of the plays under center for the Tiger Cats and finished 15 of 30 on pass attempts for 197 yards and a TD. Hamilton’s special teams produced a 93-yard kickoff return for a score last week and should a difference maker again.

Expect a great game from Hamilton kicker Sandro DeAngelis who will find extra motivation against his former team. Hamilton also showed promise on defense with four sacks and a couple of turnovers. Of course the unit ended up collapsing and allowed 502 yards to the Bombers. This will be a close one, but give the advantage to the home team.

              Pick: Hamilton

Saskatchewan Roughriders at British Columbia Lions (-2.5, 53)

Can the Green Riders regroup after a thrilling roller-coaster ride that gave them a 54-51 double overtime win against the Grey Cup defending champs to kickoff the 2010 season? Lions QB Casey Printers has a history of success against Saskatchewan, but Riders quarterback Darian Durant was almost perfect in last week against the Alouettes.

It will all come down to which defense will play the best. One thing seems for sure, Durant, who was 30 in 44 for 478 yards and 5 TDs against Montreal, won’t have as much fun against the Lions secondary.

              Pick: Under

              Sunday

Montreal Alouettes vs Edmonton Eskimos (+5.5, 53)

Ricky Ray must play better in Week 2 if the Eskimos have a chance to win against a Montreal team that can and will put lots of points. Ray will have a chance to redeem himself.

Montreal’s stop unit showed some serious weaknesses since the departure to B.C. of DT Kerone Williams and CB Davis Sanchez, along with the injuries to LB Diamond Ferri and CB Mark Estelle.

The Alouettes have been hit by a scorching heat wave in Montreal this week that could have affected some players and certainly did change the pace of practices. Many players complained of heat and fatigue in the second half of their season opener in Regina.

Even if Ray connects at will with Fred Stamps and Kelly Campbell, and Calvin McCarthy runs the ball at will, the Eskimos D will need to prevent Calvillo’s bombing squad to do as they please on the field.

The Alouettes will try to take advantage of rookie safety Saleem Borhot (replacing Jason Nugent out with a hamstring injury) who will make his first career start on Sunday.

Although they lost to B.C. in Week 1, Edmonton’s defense limited the Lions to a single touchdown and forced them to score six field goals.

              Pick: Edmonton

                  Daily Sports Roundup: July 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mets play host to the Braves, the WNBA stages its All-Star Game, and the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series race at Chicagoland.

                  Chasing the World Cup . . .

The World Cup offers up its Third Place Game in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, with Uruguay battling Germany. The Germans fell 1-0 to Spain in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday, and they're listed as the -140 favorites for the Third Place Game, with Uruguay at +350, and the draw odds at +275. The total for the contest sits at 2.5 goals. Uruguay went up against the Netherlands in their semifinal matchup and were beat 3-2.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Boston at Toronto, Minnesota at Detroit, Kansas City at the White Sox, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, Baltimore at Texas, the Yankees at Seattle, and the Angels at Oakland. Los Angeles is expected to send Scott Kazmir (7-8, 5.98 ERA) to the mound in that last matchup, while the Athletics counter with Ben Sheets (3-8, 4.89 ERA). Lefthander Kazmir has been tagged with the loss in each of his last three starts, giving up seven runs over 6 1-3 innings against the White Sox last time out. Righthander Sheets was beaten by the Yankees in his last trip to the mound, surrendering three runs on eight hits over 7 1-3 innings of work in that contest.

Over on the National League schedule for Saturday it'll be the Cubs at the Dodgers, San Francisco at Washington, St. Louis at Houston, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, Florida at Arizona, and Atlanta at the Mets. The Braves are slated to send Tim Hudson (8-4, 2.44 ERA) to the mound on Saturday, with New York going with Mike Pelfrey (10-3, 3.39 ERA). Righthander Hudson was a hard-luck loser against the Marlins in his most recent trip to the mound, allowing three runs on six hits over his eight innings of work. Righthander Pelfrey is coming off an ugly outing against the Reds in which he was knocked around for seven runs on nine hits in his 4 2-3 innings pitched.

                  Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will take the track on a Saturday night for a second straight week, competing in the LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick are the 13/2 Vegas co-favorites to visit victory lane in Saturday's Cup event, followed by Tony Stewart at 6/1, Jimmie Johnson at 15/2, and Kyle Busch at 17/2. Gordon, Harvick, Stewart, and Busch have all won Cup races at Chicagoland in the past, while Johnson will be looking for his first victory on the track. Mark Martin, the defending champion, is listed at 10/1 odds to repeat that win on Saturday.

                  Rounding out the Roundup . . .

There are two games on the Canadian Football League's schedule for Saturday, with Calgary at Hamilton and Saskatchewan at British Columbia. Calgary got past Toronto 30-16 at home in Week 1 last time out, while Hamilton is coming off a 49-29 road loss to Winnipeg. The Tiger-Cats are 2-point home favorites for Saturday, with the total at 52 points. Saskatchewan slipped past Montreal 54-51 at home in their first game of the season, while British Columbia managed to knock off Edmonton 25-10 on the road. Oddsmakers have the Lions set as 2.5-point home favorites on Saturday, with a total of 54.

Finally, the WNBA has its All-Star Game on tap for Saturday afternoon, with this year's format seeing players from the USA women's national team taking on a team of the WNBA's all-stars. Tip-off is set for 3:30pm ET at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.

                    Saturday's six-pack

-- Adam Dunn hit three HRs Wednesday, two more Friday as Stephen Strasburg got his third big league win, 8-1 over the Giants.

-- Phillies were down 7-1 in 9th, tied game, then Ryan Howard won it with opposite field HR in 10th; big win for the gutty Phils, 9-7.

-- Paul Goydos is minus-15 thru two rounds at Quad Cities, but he isn't winning!!!! Steve Stricker goes 60-66 for minus-16 and one-shot lead.

-- Tyrus Thomas, who averaged 10 points, six rebounds for Charlotte last year, signed a 5-year, $40M contract. What a freakin' country.

-- Kyle Korver signed with Bulls for three years, $15M, all because he shot 53.9% from the arc LY. Shooting is a valuable commodity.

-- In case you missed it, since it didn't come as part of a one-hour show, Kevin Durant signed a lucrative 5-year extension this week ($86M). It appeared on transactions page, the way such things are supposed to.

                    *********************************************

Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff for a steamy Saturday.......

                    13) So the Texas Rangers outmaneuver the Bronx Bombers and trade for Cliff Lee; now all they have to do to make it worthwhile is sign him after the season. Lee is from Arkansas, so that could help some.

                    12) Mets dropped out of the bidding when Seattle asked for Ike Davis and Jonathon Niese, which was too expensive a package, but at some point in July, Omar Minaya needs to start acting like the GM of a big market club, not the Montreal Expos. The Mets need another quality starting pitcher.

                    11) Guy who owns the Dodgers hasn't paid state/federal taxes since 2004; how is this possible? No wonder I'm not rich; I pay my damn taxes.

                    10) OK, everyone who had David Price vs Ubaldo Jimenez as starters in All-Star Game back in April raise your hand; nah, me neither. Wouldn't have come up with Josh Johnson either.

                    9) Rewarded myself today with a little gift; called Southwest Airlines and changed my flight to Vegas from Tuesday to Monday. 24 extra hours in America's favorite city-- thats a solid gift.

                    8) Amare Stoudemire's agent is a man named Happy Walters; am guessing he's just a little happier than normal this week. 4% of $100M can make a man happier, even if he's Happy to begin with.

                    7) Brewers beat Pirates Friday, scoring in 8-9-10th innings, first time they did that since 1993, when they were an American League team.

                    6) Part of why the Saints sucked for most of their history until last year; in 1979, they drafted a punter named Russell Erxleben, two spots ahead of Kellen Winslow, one of the greatest TEs ever. Years later, they picked Marc Bulger 30 spots before New England picked Tom Brady. Yikes.

                    5) Its fun to think about how one thing happening has a domino effect on totally unrelated things. Alabama is a national power in football again, but only because Miami Dolphins chose Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees in free agency a few years back. If Nick Saban chooses Brees, Miami wins more games, Saban probably stays and Bama goes in another direction for its new coach. Chances are, they wouldn't be nearly as good right now.

And no doubt the Saints wouldn't be Super Bowl champs now.

                    4) Lets remember than Pat Riley became an NBA coach because a fellow named Jack McKinney fell off his bicycle. Seriously. McKinney was 10-4 as coach of the 1979-80 Lakers, Magic Johnson's rookie year, when he got badly injured riding his bike. Paul Westhead took over, plucked Riley out of the Lakers' radio booth to be an assistant, and the Lakers won the NBA title, so Westhead stayed as coach, even when McKinney got healthy.

                    3) Magic got Westhead fired after a 7-4 start two years later, and Riley became head coach of the Lakers; he went on to run with that opportunity and become one of the league'e great coaches (1,210--694, five titles) but if not for a guy falling off his bike, maybe none of that happens.

                    2) Before NBA analysts anoint Chris Bosh as a superstar, keep in mind he's played in 11 playoff games in seven years. Won three of them.

                    1) Last thought until October on the Lebron/Miami thing; he has the right to go anywhere he wants. Just thought if he was going to leave the town he called home, he should have done it in a quieter, less public way. Kind of like how Kevin Durant announced his new contract.
