    Guys,

After the early a.m. posts, on Tuesday, I won't be able to add anything until mid-afternoon. Unfortunately, there is one early WNBA start on Tuesday.

      Daily Sports Roundup: July 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Athletics play host to the Yankees, the Padres take to the field in Washington, and Uruguay battles the Netherlands at the World Cup.

      Chasing the World Cup . . .
The World Cup's semifinal round begins on Tuesday with Uruguay vs. The Netherlands at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Oddsmakers have the Dutch set as big -165 favorites for Tuesday's matchup, with Uruguay at +550, the draw odds at +250, and the total at 2.5. The Netherlands upset Brazil 2-1 in Port Elizabeth in the World Cup's quarterfinals, and Uruguay reached the final four by getting past Ghana in penalty kicks.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has Baltimore at Detroit, Minnesota at Toronto, Boston at Tampa Bay, Cleveland at Texas, the Angels at the White Sox, Kansas City at Seattle, and the Yankees at Oakland. CC Sabathia (10-3, 3.33 ERA) is slated to take on Trevor Cahill (8-2, 2.74 ERA) in that Yankees/Athletics matchup. Lefthander Sabathia has picked up the win in each of his last six starts, holding the Mariners to one earned run over eight innings in his last trip to the mound. Righthander Cahill is coming off a win over the Orioles in which he allowed one run in seven innings.

Meanwhile, the National League on Tuesday offers up Atlanta at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Houston, San Francisco at Milwaukee, St. Louis at Colorado, the Cubs at Arizona, Florida at the Dodgers, and San Diego at Washington. The Padres are expected to go with Clayton Richard (6-4, 2.74 ERA) on Tuesday, while the Nationals counter with Livan Hernandez (6-4, 2.98 ERA). Lefthander Richard is coming off back-to-back wins over the Rockies and Marlins, allowing two runs over those 13 innings of work. Righthander Hernandez had to settle for a no-decision in his last outing against the Mets, surrendering just one run on seven hits over seven innings.

      Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are four games on the WNBA schedule for Tuesday, with Connecticut vs. San Antonio, Indiana vs. Chicago, Phoenix vs. Los Angeles, and New York vs. Seattle. The Liberty (7-8 SU, 7-8 ATS) were defeated 97-82 by Phoenix in their last game, with Cappie Pondexter tossing in 21 points for New York in that contest before taking a flagrant foul and getting ejected. The Storm (15-2 SU, 12-5 ATS) won their sixth straight game last time out, knocking off Los Angeles 75-62. Swin Cash was good for 18 points.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Connecticut Sun at San Antonio Silver Stars – The home team has moved from a 1-point underdog to a 1.5-point favorite since the line was released.

Orioles at Tigers – Detroit opened as a -172 favorite but a few markets have moved the moneyline to as high as -200.

Cubs at Diamondbacks – The total for this game has jumped to 9.5 on most boards after opening at 9.

        Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Indians at Rangers – The forecast calls for a 30-40 percent chance of rain throughout the game.

Angels at White Sox – A 30 percent chance of rain is in the forecast.

        Who’s hot

Seattle (WNBA) is 4-0 SU in its last four meetings versus New York and is 5-1 ATS in its last six games overall.

The Padres have won three straight games and are 7-3 over their last 10.

        Who’s not

Phoenix (WNBA) has lost six of its last seven games, going 3-4 ATS in that timeframe.

San Francisco is 2-8 during a 10-game stretch.

        Key stat

6.00 – Armando Galarraga’s ERA since his near perfect game on June 2.

        Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list. The move was made retroactive to last Sunday, therefore he will be able to be activated immediately after the All-Star break. Buchholz (10-4, 2.45 ERA) suffered a minor hamstring tear while running the bases against the San Francisco Giants on June 26. Left-hander Felix Doubront will take his spot in the rotation and face the Rays Tuesday.

        Notable quotable

"In my mind, I thought I put the numbers (up) and (with) all my hustling and all my energy, I think I have (the credentials for) being there and playing in the All-Star Game. I don't know what I can do to make the All-Star Game because I think I had enough to be there. But I know I'm an All-Star for my teammates, for my family. I'm an All-Star for a lot of people."

-- Rockies catcher Miguel Olivo who was snubbed by MLB fans for leaving him off the NL All-Star roster.

        Tips and notes

        - The Rays are a respectable 3-4 since the B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria soap opera but there may be more than meets the eye regarding that saga. Upton was held out of the starting lineup for four straight games after the altercation because of a supposed quadriceps injury. He was back in the lineup two games after that but was not on the card for Monday’s game against Boston. Upton was told he was benched because of his "numbers" against Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. Tampa Bay has been in a bit of a funk recently, dropping 13 of its last 22 games, and relationships may not be peachy in the clubhouse.

        - Laying chalk is normally not a good betting habit to slide into. That’s why you see most successful handicappers play small favorites or underdogs. As of July 5, MLB favorites had compiled a record of 720-527 this year. While that winning percentage looks nice, favorites are collectively down 17.76 units on the season. MLB seems to be much more balanced this season compared to years past (just look at tight division races) so it makes sense that underdogs have turned a nice profit.

        - The Miami Herald reported Monday that Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez has asked closer Leo Nunez to quit using his changeup so often. Rodriguez said that Nunez “needs to go back to being a power pitcher, using his fastball and slider more.” Problem is, if we here at Covers are reading this then other MLB teams are too. The Marlins have been struggling and Nunez is a big reason for it. The fireballer has yielded two runs in two of his last three outings and has recorded one save since June 23. Until Nunez gets his head back on straight, Fins backers might want to look toward a five-inning line.

          Tuesday's six-pack

-- Mets scored in the first inning of their last seven games, despite Jose Reyes not playing in the last six.

-- Last time the Reds were in first place this late in season? 1999.

-- At least 107 countries will be represented in Main Event of the World Series of Poker out in Las Vegas. Even I'll be there next week.

-- College basketball recruiting's summer season starts Tuesday.

-- Amare Stoudemire gets five years, $99.7M from the Knicks; he didn't go to college, but he could buy one or two now.

-- South Florida gave hoop coach Stan Heath a contract extension thru 2015, a sign that they know tough Heath's job really is.

          ****************************************

Tuesday's List of 13 (+1): Our weekly look at AL teams......

          14) Orioles-- I'm thinking the HR Derby shouldn't be restricted to guys on the All-Star teams: here are the guys I'd choose to see........
          NL-- Adam Dunn/Adrian Gonzalez/Albert Pujols/Mark Reynolds
          AL-- Russell Branyan/Vladimir Guerrero/Miguel Cabrera/David Ortiz

          13) Indians-- MLB needs to make third base coaches stay in the coaches' box; a man died in a minor league game a few years back, but major league third base coaches still stand halfway to home plate, with their back to the plate. Its for their own safety; keep coaches in their boxes, please?????

          12) Mariners-- Felix Hernandez is 6-5, 3.01 in 18 starts, but isn't on the All-Star team; apparently Joe Girardi is too busy putting Andy Pettitte on the team to realize that King Felix might help the AL champ get home field in the World Series. Felix is 6-5 for a last place team, by the way.

          11) Royals-- They're playing better ball under Ned Yost, 25-23 since the change was made, 8-3 in their last 11 games, but their horrid performance in Anaheim Sunday night could keep them off Sunday Night Baseball for another decade or so.

          10) A's-- Solid starting pitching keeps them in games, but their offense is so pathetic, so anemic that its hard to watch. Coco Crisp is good when he plays, but he's played in only 13 of their first 84 games. They traded for Conor Jackson; it took him 14 games to go on DL. &!!$^)$%%^*(

          9) Blue Jays-- Guy who writes about the CFL said that last Thursday's season opener in Regina, a 54-51 Saskatchewan win in OT, might be the best CFL game played all season. Roughriders trailed Montreal 33-12 in second half, but rallied behind former North Carolina QB Durant to get an unlikely win. NFL Network is showing CFL games, which would be real good, BUT STUPID TIME-WARNER DOESN'T CARRY NFLN. I'm sorry, I'm good now, just had to get that out of my system.

          8) White Sox-- Paul Konerko leads MLB with 15 HRs at home; he's hit five on the road. Had forgotten that Konerko was traded strait-up in 1998 for Mike Cameron. Good trade-- both are still starters in the big leagues.

          7) Tigers-- Carmelo Anthony has been offered a contract extension by the Nuggets of three-years, $65M, but hasn't accepted, even though the next collective bargaining agreement could cost him tens of millions of dollars if he doesn't sign this extension. Apparently, he'd like to play in NY City. Be careful what you wish for, young man.

          6) Twins-- Justin Morneau leads MLB with 13 HRs on the road; he's hit four at home; he's hitting .375 on the road, .316 at home. Minnesota has offered two prime prospects, CF Hicks/C Ramos to Seattle for Cliff Lee. Good to see that the new stadium has made them big-time players.

          5) Angels-- The model franchise in baseball; they've played better since Kendry Morales broke his leg, they don't go nuts buying free agents, the prices at concession stands at the Big A have actually gone down the last couple years. They have fast guys, they catch the ball, and they do not panic, not ever. Sadly, they're in the same division as my A's.

          4) Red Sox-- Terry Francona is my AL Manager of the Year right now, for keeping this injury-plagued bunch pasted together. People in Cincinnati want to make a deal with Red Sox fans; they'll vote Youkilis for All-Star team (he's from Cincinnati) if Boston fans vote for Joey Votto, whose not being on the All-Stsr team is epic in its stupidity.

          3) Rays-- Are 21-19 at home this year, after being 52-29 at the Trop last year; if I own this team, I tell my GM to go for it this season, make the big trade that'll get this team into the playoffs. After this year, Crawford is gone, and so are about six other guys, but CC's loss will be the one that hurts, since he's the best player in franchise history. Go for it now.

          2) Rangers-- Texas scores 5.98 runs/home game, 4.34 on road. Hamilton wound hitting a ridiculous .454 in June, with nine HRs, 31 RBI. He had nine HRs, 27 RBI in April/May combined. Bengie Molina make them a better defensive team, but doubtful they'll be able to add any pitching.

          1) Bronx-- So Joe Johnson got $119M to stay with the Hawks; read this weekend where one NBA scribe noted that if the Hawk players chose up sides for a pickup game, Johnson wouldn't be the first guy taken. I may have to get the NBA package next winter, just to watch ol' $119M Joe.

                Tuesday, July 6

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Colorado Rockies (-136, 9.5)

Motivation can come from a number of different places. A recent source that could drive MLB players to perform was the announcement of the All-Star Game rosters.

The Rockies organization feels that two of its players were snubbed after being left off the NL team. Fans could make amends for outfielder Carlos Gonzalez’s oversight by voting him in for the final roster spot but catcher Miguel Olivo still contends that he should be in Anaheim next week.

"In my mind, I thought I put the numbers (up) and (with) all my hustling and all my energy, I think I have (the credentials for) being there and playing in the All-Star Game," Olivo said.

Olivo is hitting .307 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs while leading all catchers in slugging percentage (.540). The eight-year veteran is having a career year and has never been voted in as an All-Star.

Gonzalez, who is hitting .295 with 14 home runs, 52 RBIs and 12 stolen bases, has to contend with Heath Bell, Billy Wagner, Ryan Zimmerman and Joey Votto in the final online vote.

Now that Colorado closer Huston Street is back to shore up the bullpen problems, the Rockies have started to roll. The team is 5-2 in its last seven games and the two aforementioned hitters should help continue that winning trend while wanting to prove they should be among MLB’s best.

                Pick: Rockies

San Diego Padres at Washington Nationals (-105, 7.5)

Neither of these teams produces runs at a ridiculous rate, but one is in first place and the other is in last place.

San Diego ranks 22nd in scoring this season (339 runs) and have the fifth-to-worst team batting average (.245). But the Friars lead their NL West foes by 3.5 games because of incredible pitching and timely hitting.

Despite having the most-lauded arm in The Show, the Nats aren’t supplying their hurlers with much run support, having amassed only 337 runs this year.

To put things in a simplified perspective, the Pads have not scored more than three runs in nine of their last 13 outings but only lost four of those games. On the flip side, Washington has not plated more than three runners in 12 of its last 18 games but went 5-13 in that stretch.

The Padres have won five of their last six road games and all but one of those contests played under the total. Look for that trend to continue Tuesday.

                Pick: Under

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Clayton Richard (6-4, 2.74), San Diego Padres

San Diego’s southpaw struck out a career-high 10 Rockies batters in his last start. Richard fanned five of the first six hitters in that game and finished with a stat line of one walk, two earned runs and five hits over 7.0 innings of work.

"It was a lot of fun today," Richard said after the 13-3 win. "We had a pretty good approach going into it and attacked the strike zone, and when you get that type of run support, it makes it a lot easier to pitch.

In his previous outing, Richard held the Marlins scoreless through 6.0 innings on the bump while striking out five. Both of his last two starts have led to Padres victories.

                Slumping

Jeff Francis (2-3, 4.67), Colorado Rockies

The Franchise only lasted three innings last Wednesday against a San Diego club that many consider to be offensively challenged. The Friars lit Francis up for a career-high eight earned runs on seven hits. He walked three hitters and failed to strike out a single Padre.

"Nobody likes to give up eight runs," said Francis. "I've had days like this before and this obviously ranks up there. I missed on a lot of pitches. I was falling behind so many batters."

Francis has yielded no less than three earned runs in each of his last three starts. The lefty made six June appearances for Colorado and went 1-2 with 22 runs allowed over a span of 35.1 innings. The over has cashed in three of Francis’ last four starts.

                Returning

Erik Bedard (0-0, 0.00), Seattle Mariners

The M’s are hoping to see some returns on that hefty contract they signed Bedard to a few years back. The left-hander is coming off surgery of a torn labrum and hasn’t pitched in the majors since July 25 of last year.

"I talked to (Triple-A manager) Darren Brown and he said [Bedard] was fine," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "His changeup command was so-so and his velocity was 88 to 93, but the biggest thing for us is that he felt good after."

Bedard will no doubt be on a tight pitch count in his first game back. In his only minor league start, Bedard allowed three hits and one earned run over 4.1 innings.

Felix Doubront (1-0, 5.40) Boston Red Sox

Doubront earned a win in his major league debut on June 18 against the Dodgers but feels he is more prepared for the second start of his career.

"I feel more confident, more relaxed this time," said Doubront, who surrendered three earned runs in 5.0 innings during the win over Los Angeles. "I know how it works now."

Before being called up, the 22-year-old Venezuelan had a 6-1 record and 2.11 ERA between Double- and Triple-A ball this season. Doubront is taking the rotation spot of Clay Buchholz who was placed on the 15-day DL Monday. The lefty could be a candidate for the bullpen once Buchholz returns.

                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 6 in Baseball History...

1919 - William Veeck, former sportswriter, replaces Fred Mitchell as Cubs president, but Mitchell remains manager for Chicago.

1932 - Cubs shortstop Billy Jurges is shot twice in his Chicago hotel room by a spurned girlfriend, Violet Popovich Valli. In a scuffle for the gun, Jurges is hit in the shoulder and hand. Jurges fails to prosecute, and Valli will be signed to a 22-week contract to sing in local nightclubs.

1933 - The first major-league All-Star Game is played at Comiskey Park, and Babe Ruth is the star. His two-run home run is the margin of victory in the American League's 4-2 win. John McGraw comes out of retirement to manage the National League.

1942 - First-inning home runs by Lou Boudreau and Rudy York off Mort Cooper lead the A.L. to a 3-1 triumph over the N.L. in the All-Star Game at the Polo Grounds. Mickey Owen's pinch home-run is the N.L.'s only score. He does not hit a single home run during the regular schedule.

1956 - Ford Frick inaugurates the Cy Young Award, to honor one outstanding pitcher each year. The Baseball Writers Association will do the voting. Only one pitcher will be honored each year until 1967, when a pitcher in each league will be selected.

1980 - Steve Carlton (14-4) becomes the all-time lefthanded strikeout king, fanning seven Cardinals in an 8-3 Phillies win to bring his major-league career total to 2,836. Mickey Lolich had held the record with 2,832.

1983 - In the 50th anniversary All-Star Game at Chicago's Comiskey Park, the A.L. routs the N.L. 13-3 for its first win since 1971. The A.L. breaks the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Fred Lynn grand slam - the first ever in All-Star competition. It is Lynn's fourth All-Star homer, tying him with Ted Williams for the A.L. record.

1986 - Bob Horner becomes the 11th player to hit four home runs in a game, but it isn't enough as the Braves fall to the Expos 11-8. Horner is the first to hit four home runs in a losing cause.

1989 - Despite having retired May 29, Mike Schmidt is elected to start at third base for the N.L. in the All-Star Game. A's outfielder Jose Canseco, who has not played all season because of a wrist injury, is picked to start for the A.L.. Neither will play in the game.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Liberty at Seattle Storm (-10, 151.5)

Just because the WNBA is an all-women’s league, don’t expect the behavior to be ladylike.

Liberty forward Cappie Pondexter was tossed from New York’s 97-82 loss to the Phoenix Mercury after being dealt two flagrant fouls following a tussle underneath the hoop with former teammate Penny Taylor Saturday night.

"I'm sayin this to all my fans I would never do anything on the court to hurt anyone! Imma competitor 1st,” Pondexter posted on her Twitter account.

The Liberty’s loss snapped a three-game winning streak and dropped the team to 7-8 straight up and against the spread on the season. Now, New York must clear its head for a tough trip to the West Coast to face the WNBA’s top team.

Seattle has won six games in a row, covering the spread in five of those outings. The Storm are 11-5-1 ATS this year, including a 92-84 win over the Liberty as 2-point home favorites.

                  Pick: Seattle

Connecticut Sun at San Antonio Silver Stars (PK, 154.5)

The Sun have had a hard time rising on the road this season, posting a 3-5 record in opposing arenas.

Those troubles have been extrapolated by Connecticut’s 2-5-1 ATS mark over those eight games. The Sun lost their most recent outing, falling 92-80 to the Chicago Sky as 1-point road underdogs. Connecticut has been a solid play at home, going 6-2 ATS inside Mohegan Sun Arena, but can’t find consistency on the road.

“Everybody was all over the boards with predictions for us (entering the season),” head coach Mike Thibault told the Norwich Bulletin. “But when we started out, we were winning home games in front of our fans, all of a sudden the expectations changed. And mine probably did, too. And now I’m trying to temper my frustration with a sense of reality, too.”

Connecticut scored just 29 points in the first half of Thursday’s loss to Chicago, shooting a dismal 35 percent in the first two quarters. The Sun have struggled to get off to good starts and with the next three games on the road, may have to wait until they return home – on July 17 – to figure it out.

                  Pick: San Antonio
