Bettor's best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

Line to keep an eye on

Nationals at Orioles – The total for the game has elevated to 9.5 after opening at 9.

    Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Astros at Rangers – There is a 20 percent chance of rain in the forecast and a 13 mph wind will blow in from right-center field.

Cubs at White Sox – A 60-70 percent chance of precipitation is expected in the early portions of the game and the wind will blow out to left field at 18 mph.

Cardinals at Royals – The National Weather Service forecast projects a 10 mph wind to blow out to left field. There is also a 50 percent chance of rain for the game.

    Who’s hot

The road team is 5-0 SU and ATS in the last five games between the Sparks and Dream (WNBA).

Seattle has won seven of its last 10 games.

    Who’s not

Heading into Saturday’s action, the Tribe had lost six straight and 9-of-10.

Phoenix (WNBA) has dropped three in a row, going 1-2 ATS during that stretch.

    Key trend

0-10-1 – Astros’ over/under record in their last 11 games that Roy Oswalt starts after coming off a loss he pitched.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Argentinian defender Walter Samuel is doubtful to play in Sunday's Round of 16 match against Mexico with a right thigh injury. Samuel left Argentina's 4-1 win over South Korea on June 17 after suffering the injury. Coach Diego Maradona said Samuel initially looked good at Friday's practice, but does not want to risk any serious injury. Argentina's defense is considered the team's weak spot and the loss of Samuel is a concern for the team. Nicolas Burdisso would be the man to take Samuel's spot in the starting 11.

    Notable quotable

"Many journalists should apologize to the players. I'm not suggesting you drop your trousers, but it would be honest and great so we all get along better. I am turning 50 and I am not bitter. But I get annoyed when people don't respect my players.”

-- Argentina soccer coach Diego Maradona said about the naysayers of his team heading into the World Cup.

    Tips and notes

    - There are a couple of teams bettors might want to consider playing a 5-inning line on rather than the full game because of closer situations. Jonathan Papelbon has blown two consecutive saves and said he has to “go back to the drawing board.” Papelbon’s average fastball velocity is down 0.8 mph from 2008 and his average slider velocity is down 1.7 mph from last season and 4.4 mph from 2008. Manny Corpas at the back end of the Rockies’ bullpen is also not to be trusted. Corpas got a save Friday night but had yielded eight runs and blown two saves earlier in the week. With Huston Street due to take over the closer’s role soon, Corpas might not be right in the head knowing he is about to be replaced.

    - As most bettors know, fading the public can be a profitable betting system. Yahoo! Sports has provided a “fade the public” platform with its fantasy World Cup picks. So far for the tournament, blindly fading the public percentage has produced a 24-15-6 record and the unit value is likely higher than the winning percentage because you would be betting mostly underdogs. For Sunday, the public has selected Germany and Argentina to advance so England (+165) and Mexico (+550) might turn a profit.

    - With the Mets just one game out of first place in the NL East and ace Johan Santana struggling, players have publicly asked GM Omar Minaya to trade for Roy Oswalt or Cliff Lee. Closer Francisco Rodriguez said, “another big name out there [in the rotation] would change the whole club and atmosphere.” If New York lands either one of these pitching studs it might be time to back them often. Also, if neither has been dealt by the All-Star break a futures bet on the Mets could be worth a look because the odds will definitely be altered if one is acquired after the break and New York is a frontrunner to land one.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles (-120, 9.5)

Whatever was said at lunch between Baltimore outfielder Nick Markakis and owner Peter Angelos on Thursday must have been the right thing. Since the meeting, the Orioles have won three straight games.

"I think it was up to the point now where it's no secret -- everyone knows what's going on around here," Markakis said. "I just felt (meeting him) was the right thing to do, get some answers here and there."

The O’s, who hold a major-league worst 22-52 record and rank third-to-last in runs, have plated 24 batters during their winning streak. The team overcame five- and six-run deficits in its last two victories – both against the Nationals.

"I think it's huge," catcher Matt Wieters said of the win. "No matter what we get down by, we're going to be able to swing and get our way back into it. I think it's a big boost."

The two wins against Washington snapped a string of 11 straight series losses for Baltimore.

"I think we can even play better baseball," Adam Jones said. "We will take it right now, (but) we've got to continue to improve as a team."

Don’t expect the Orioles to climb back into the AL East race, but they are worth a play while the offense is churning and confidence is high.

      Pick: Orioles

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers (-120, 9)

With ace Roy Oswalt on the verge of being dealt, the Astros have essentially announced they are in a rebuilding mode. Houston’s lineup on Saturday that featured four rookies confirmed it.

The ‘Stros trotted out four first-year position players – Jason Bourgeois in center field, Chris Johnson at third base, Jason Castro at catcher and Oswaldo Navarro at shortstop – that had combined for 33 big league at-bats. The quatrain went 2-for-14 with four strikeouts.

"We'll wait and see how everything works out," manager Brad Mills said.

Oswalt will be on the bump in Sunday’s game and every start from here until the All-Star break is basically an audition for a contending team. The heat index is projected to be 101 at its peak in Arlington Sunday and offenses usually struggle in the Texas heat.

      Pick: Under

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Jaime Garcia (7-3, 1.79), St. Louis Cardinals

Garcia is only a rookie, but the Cardinals left-hander is a legit contender for the NL Cy Young award.

The most earned runs Garcia has surrendered in 17 starts this season is three – and that came in his most recent outing. Garcia didn’t walk a hitter and recorded four strikeouts in that 9-4 victory over Toronto.

“The whole game I felt like I was doing a pretty good job of keeping the ball down,” Garcia said.

All of the Royals’ lineup will be seeing Garcia for the first time Sunday and as indicated by his sub-2.00 ERA, opposing offenses have not fared well against the rookie in their first attempt.

John Danks (7-5, 3.23), Chicago White Sox

Now that the South Siders are starting to win, they may actually be able to put to use Danks’ stellar 2010 season.

The 6-1, 210-pound southpaw is the ace of the Sox staff and has gone 3-0 in his last three starts. Danks went at least seven innings in each of those outings and Chicago’s offense is finally providing him with some support – scoring nine and seven runs in his most recent starts.

      Slumping

Jeremy Guthrie (3-9, 4.28), Baltimore Orioles

The O’s righty has lost five straight decisions, giving up four runs or more in all but one of those starts. Guthrie got hammered in his last outing, yielding six runs in 6.0 innings of work during a 10-4 loss to the Marlins.

“For some reason, Guthrie didn’t look right. He was missing his spots,” interim manager Juan Samuel said after Guthrie’s latest loss. “Couple pitches, some good hitters with two strikes on them, he hung some breaking balls and got hurt.”

Guthrie is 2-5 with a 4.50 ERA at home this season.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: New York Yankees at LA Dodgers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Dodgers (-110, 7.5)

The Dodgers and Yankees meet in the final game of this interleague series at Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles Sunday Night. Let’s take a look at the matchup.

      Awkward reunion tour concludes

The Joe Torre reunion party concludes against his former team when the Dodgers wrap-up the final game on the 2010 interleague schedule this evening.

After being dumped by the Yankees in an acrimonious parting following the 2007 season, Torre shared plenty of hugs with some of his former players Friday night.

"The odd thing for me is I'm going to be over there in that dugout pulling against people I've never pulled against before," Torre said. "That's the weird part for me."

While Torre has kept in touch with some of his players, the skipper hasn't spoken with Brian Cashman since his book, "The Yankee Years" was released at the beginning of 2009. In addition, he has not spoken with anybody else in the front office with the exception of George Steinbrenner, whom Torre called to congratulate after last year's World Series.

The most awkward meeting is with Alex Rodriguez, whose relationship with Torre was scarred by some of the contents in the manager's book – most notably the revelation that some of Rodriguez's own teammates referred to him as "A-Fraud."

"I can't entirely understand what Joe will be going through, but I think he has a switch inside that he can just flip on," insists Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Hideki Matsui.

      Blue crew

The father of Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal has died from injuries he sustained after being kicked by a horse three weeks ago. Furcal described his late father as his hitting coach and No. 1 fan. Los Angeles expects Furcal back from the Dominican Republic in the middle of the week.

Adding to the Dodgers’ personnel woes is the loss of starting pitchers Chad Billingsley and Carlos Monasterios.

Billingsley went on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain on June 12 and is expected to be activated June 28.

Monasterios went on the DL June 19 with a blister on his right middle finger and a split nail on his right index finger. His return is unknown.

      June bug

Despite their stellar play in posting the best record in the major leagues this season, the Yanks entered the weekend with a scant two-game lead over Tampa Bay and Boston in the AL East.

Entering Friday, for all intents and purposes, the Pinstripes kept pace with the Red Sox in June, going 14-7 opposed to 15-7 for Boston.

The Rays’ 9-11 mark in June paved the way for New York’s surge to the top of the division standings. The Yankees will play seven more series against the Rays and the Sox before season’s end.

      Southpaw slants

Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers opposes New York’s Andy Pettitte in a southpaw setting this evening.

The Dodgers are 10-5 behind Kershaw this season, including 6-2 at home (four wins in a row). Kershaw started his MLB career with losses in six of his first seven team starts in June, but he has reversed tracks, going 6-1 his last seven during the month of June.

The Yankees are 11-3 behind Pettitte’s serves this season. The big lefty is 10-4 his last 14 starts in June, including 5-1 in his last six road games.

Pettitte is 2-2 with a 3.33 ERA in four career team starts against the Dodgers while Kershaw makes his first-ever appearance against the Bronx Bombers.

      East meets West

      - The Dodgers are 0-6 in their last five meetings against the AL East.

      - The Yankees are 6-1 in their last six games against the NL West.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 27 in Baseball History...

1959 - With the players voting, Henry Aaron gets a unanimous vote for the All-Star Game, making him the first player so selected.

1973 - David Clyde, 18 and fresh out of Houston's Westchester high school, makes his eagerly awaited debut with Texas before 35,698, the largest Rangers' crowd of the year. Clyde, the number one pick in the draft, walks the first two Twins he faces, then gets Bob Darwin, George Mitterwald, and Joe Lis on swinging third strikes. Clyde goes five innings and gives up only one hit — a two-run home run — walks seven and strikes out eight. He is the winner, 4-3.

1977 - Willie McCovey smashes two home runs in the sixth inning to pace a 14-9 Giants victory over the Reds. McCovey becomes the first player to twice hit two home runs in one inning, having also done it on April 12, 1973. He also becomes the all-time N.L. leader with 17 career grand slams.

1980 - Jerry Reuss pitches an 8-0 no-hitter for the Dodgers against the Giants at Candlestick Park. Reuss, who strikes out only two but doesn't walk a batter, is deprived of a perfect game when shortstop Bill Russell throws wildly to first base on Jack Clark's easy grounder in the first inning.

1986 - Give him an 'A' for effort. San Francisco second baseman Robby Thompson is caught stealing four times in the Giants' 7-6, 12-inning win over the Reds, establishing a new major league record. Thompson was thrown out by Bo Diaz in the fourth, sixth, ninth and 11th innings.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Sparks at Atlanta Dream (-9.5 166.5)

With the team still reeling from the loss of superstar forward Candace Parker, the Los Angeles Sparks will be without another key member until late in the summer.

Veteran guard Betty Lennox is expected to be out until August while she recovers from knee surgery, the team announced earlier this week.

Lennox, who is averaging just under five points, brings a ton of experience and leadership to the lineup but has been bothered by a torn meniscus. So much so, this is the first season in which the 2004 Finals MVP has not averaged double figures in scoring.

Los Angeles has now lost back-to-back games without Parker and now must face the top team in the Eastern Conference on the road. The Sparks have scored an average of 64 points without Parker – 12 point less than their season average – and played to the under in the last two games.

        Pick: Under

Phoenix Mercury at Washington Mystics (-3, 172.5)

Mercury star Diana Taurasi is feeling a bit run down just two months into the season.

After playing overseas, dealing with injury and with plans to play in the World Championship later this year, Taurasi isn't focusing on Phoenix until she can catch her breath.

"You have to (take a break). There is no way your body is going to be able to function at that level for that long without getting it some time to rest," she told the Hartford Courant. "You are doing your career a disservice, in the long run, by continuing to play if you are hurt and tired."

Taurasi didn’t indicate when she would be sitting out and told the media she would need a closer look at the schedule. While that break won’t come against the Mystics this weekend, bettors must question Taurasi's focus and dedication to the WNBA franchise.

        Pick: Washington

            Daily Sports Roundup: June 27

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Germany meets England at the World Cup, the Sprint Cup Series races in New Hampshire, and the Dodgers and Yankees do battle.

            Chasing the World Cup . . .

The Round of 16 continues at the World Cup on Sunday with Germany vs. England and Argentina vs. Mexico. England, which finished second in Group C with five points, is a slight +155 favorite against Germany (+170), with draw odds of +220. The Germans ended up in top spot in Group D with six points. Argentina, which won Group B with nine points, is a big -220 favorite against Mexico (+600), with draw odds of +315. The Mexican team finished up in second place in Group A, collecting four points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Andy Pettitte (9-2, 2.48 ERA) vs. Clayton Kershaw (7-4, 3.24 ERA) in the Yankees/Dodgers matchup in Los Angeles on Sunday night. Lefthander Pettitte beat the Diamondbacks in his last trip to the mound, holding them to two earned runs on seven hits over his seven innings of work while striking out seven batters. Fellow lefthander Kershaw was beaten by the Angels in his last outing, giving up five earned runs on six hits over 6 2-3 innings. The Dodgers are 4-1 in Kershaw's last five outings.

Rounding out Sunday's MLB slate: San Diego at Florida, Minnesota at the Mets, Cleveland at Cincinnati, Washington at Baltimore, Detroit at Atlanta, Philadelphia at Toronto, Arizona at Tampa Bay, the Cubs at the White Sox, Seattle at Milwaukee, St. Louis at Kansas City, Colorado at the Angels, Pittsburgh at Oakland, Houston at Texas, and Boston at San Francisco. Jon Lester (8-3, 3.03 ERA) will go up against Tim Lincecum (8-2, 2.86 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Lester has won seven of his past 10 starts, and righthander Lincecum is looking for his fourth straight victory.

            Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series hit New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday for the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. Jimmie Johnson, who won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 last weekend at Infineon Raceway, is the 5/1 Vegas favorite to make it back-to-back victories this week, with Kurt Busch just behind him on that odds list at 11/2. Denny Hamlin (13/2), Jeff Gordon (15/2), and Kyle Busch (8/1) round out the top five for the Lenox Industrial Tools 301, with Tony Stewart at 10/1, and Greg Biffle at 12/1. Joey Logano, the defending champion at this event, is back at 20/1 odds to win again.

There is also a Formula 1 race on the schedule for Sunday, with the drivers taking to the track in the Grand Prix of Europe in Valencia, Spain. Lewis Hamilton is coming off consecutive victories in Turkey and Canada, and he's listed at 5/2 by the oddsmakers to take the checkered flag in Spain on Sunday. Sebastian Vettel (10/3), Fernando Alonso (7/2), Mark Webber (6/1), and Jenson Button (7/1) are also among the favorites to race to the win. Rubens Barrichello won the European Grand Prix last season, but he's well back at 250/1 to win this year. Michael Schumacher is pegged at 33/1 odds.

            Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, there are five games on the WNBA schedule for Sunday, with Seattle at Tulsa, Phoenix at Washington, Connecticut at New York, Indiana at Chicago, and Los Angeles at Atlanta. The Sparks (3-9 straight-up, 2-10 against-the-spread) were beaten 68-53 in Washington in their last contest, and they're 0-6 on the road so far this season. The Dream (10-4 SU, 9-4-1 ATS) got past Tulsa 96-90 at home in their last game. Angel McCoughtry led the way with a game-high 29 points for Atlanta that day.

              Sunday's six-pack

-- Red Sox lost Pedroia/Buchholz to injuries in last 36 hours, with foot injury to Pedroia the more serious of the two. He's out a month.

-- Buchholz got hurt running the bases, another reason AL managers hate interleague games. Me? I hate the freakin' DH, and I root for an American League team. Pitchers should know how to run the bases.

-- Padres' incredibly good pitching continued; they've won four of five on this road trip, allowing one run in two games against the Marlins.

-- Carl Pavano has beaten Halladay/Santana in his last two starts.

-- Washington is in freefall, losing in Baltimore for second day in a row; they blew a 6-0 lead Friday, a 5-0 lead Saturday. Not good.

-- 12 of the 20 hitters who faced AJ Burnett reached base Saturday, as he gave up six hits out of nine balls put in play. He misses Dave Eiland, the Bronx pitching coach who is out on an undisclosed personal leave.

Sunday's List of 13: How things have changed over last 33 years

I went to a high school graduation party Saturday, for a kid who lives in the neighborhood and went to the same high school I did. Doesn't seem like its been 33 years since I somehow graduated high school, but it has been. Here are some things that have/haven't changed in all those years......

              13) There was no Internet in '77. I used to anxiously wait for an afternoon newspaper to arrive around 3:45 each day, so I could see A's boxscores from the night before. Now I can see real-time boxscores. I also watch all their games on digital cable. Ah, progress.

              12) 1977 was the first year the A's sucked after losing most of their stars to wealthier teams. Free agency had made Oakland an afterthought. Now, 33 years later, its still pretty much the same, though the A's at least are competitive in 2010, and they did have a good run in the late 80's when the late Mr Haas owned the team and spent some money on it.

My Rams were losing playoff games in agonizing fashion every year in the 70's; if you had told me they wouldn't win a Super Bowl until a month after my 40th birthday, I would have cringed, but I wouldn't trade that 1999 season for anything. It was well worth the wait.

              11) I had a full head of thick curly hair in 1977. Now? Not so much.

              10) ESPN was still two years away in '77; televised poker was 26 years away from finding its niche on TV. Every little thing that happened in any game wasn't subject to being shown on SportsCenter or YouTube, since there was no SportsCenter and there definitely was no YouTube. .

              9) I still like to write and I still enjoy keeping records; fortunately, I'm lot better at both now. Back then, my dad would bring home pen and paper from work for me to use; now, I just have a Staples Gold Card.

              8) There was a used car lot around the corner from my house that became a fried chicken place, then an Italian restaurant that didn't serve spaghetti and meatballs, then another fast food place, then a bar that Mike Tyson owned half of. Now its finally thriving; its Albany's best strip club.

              7) I remember talking to a couple of my friends' grandfathers at games and practices; one guy used to come to basketball practice every day to watch his grandson; I had no idea back then how it was probably the highlight of his day (watching practice, not talking to me). Now, some of my friends are becoming grandfathers and grandmothers. Yikes.

              6) Cellphones? We didn't have no stinking cellphones; pay phones were the big thing back then. When calls went from a dime to a quarter, it was a big deal. Texting? Facebook? Twitter? Ummm, no.

              5) In 1977, my world was contained in a three-mile circle; the high school I went to was farther away than my college. Never got my driver's license until I was 19, so a 10-speed got me around. Today, its a Nissan Rogue, and my friends have scattered all over America, from Pittsburgh down to Houston to Cincinnati to Philly to Las Vegas. Its a smaller world now.

              4) In 1977, my dating history was just as awful as it is now, but back then I had the excuse of no money/no car/no job. Its comforting to know that some things never change. At least I have a car/job/money now.

              3) Joe Torre was a player/manager for the Mets in '77; he went 49-68, and would last five more years as the skipper in Flushing, winding up with a hideous record of 286-420. Now, he's a four-time World Champ manager whos on the last legs of his career managing a Dodger team that should be wealthy but is cash-strapped because the owner is getting divorced.

              2) My favorite movies back then were Rocky ('76) and One on One ('77); neither theater where I saw those movies for first time is standing now. To this day, I still love both of those movies.

              1) One thing I've come to realize is that life is a lot more like high school than we'd like to admit, for better or worse. Dudes with the most money still get the prettiest girls-- the prettiest girls still expect to get anything they want. I wish my neighbor good luck on her graduation; just hope she realizes the world she's going into isn't so much different than the one she is leaving. Hope she was paying attention the last four years.

Please keep in mind when investing in totals that games in NL parks do not use the DH-- games in AL ballparks use the DH.
