    Line off the board

Cardinals at Royals – The starting pitcher for St. Louis has not been announced.

Lines to keep an eye on

Astros at Rangers – Texas opened as a hefty -260 favorite and that number has jumped to -280 on some boards.

Mariners at Brewers – Most shops have moved the total in this game to 8.5 after opening at 9.

Rockies at Angels – The total for the game has elevated to 9.5 after opening at 9.

    Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Cubs at White Sox – A 30-40 percent chance of precipitation in is the forecast with wind blowing in from right field at 11 mph.

Padres at Marlins – The National Weather Service forecast projects a 15 mph wind to blow in from right-center field. There is also a 60 percent chance of rain in the early stages of the game.

    Who’s hot

The White Sox have won 10 consecutive games, earning 10.76 units on the moneyline.

Minnesota (WNBA) is 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS in its last four games.

The Rattlers (AFL) are 3-0 SU and ATS in their last three outings.

    Who’s not

Utah (AFL) has dropped six straight and five in a row against the spread.

Pittsburgh had lost three consecutive games going into Friday and 7-of-10.

Oakland has only two wins in its last 10 games.

    Key stat

.145 – Alex Rodriguez’s batting average in 15 career games against the Dodgers (8-for-55).

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Rays left fielder Carl Crawford left Thursday's game against San Diego with soreness in his left shoulder. He was out of the lineup for Friday’s game versus Arizona but manager Joe Maddon hinted that he might be available to DH during the series. Tampa Bay just doesn’t want him throwing a ball right now. Matt Joyce was called up to take his spot in the outfield.

    Notable quotable

"It's a family that wins together. We're playing really well."

-- Rangers designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero told the media after delivering a game-winning hit for Texas’ 11th consecutive win Thursday.

    Tips and notes

    - Wimbledon men’s No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal was taken to five sets in his Round 2 match versus Robin Haase. Nadal did not defend his title at Wimbledon last year because of an injury. After the Spaniard won the French Open earlier this season he told John McEnroe that he, “will have a lot of motivation gonig into the U.S. Open”…not Wimbledon. Tennis pundits sometimes get the sense Nadal really doesn’t care too much about England’s tourney. Nadal (-2000) will face Philipp Petzschner (+1100) early Saturday and he could be ripe for an upset.

    - Phillies pitchers Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels were flip-flopped in the pitching rotation Friday in order to keep Halladay on his normal five days rest. Hamels will take the mound Saturday on an extended rest of six days. Philly’s 26-year-old southpaw has only pitched one game on six days rest this season and he gave up two runs in 6.2 innings of work with three Ks in a 4-2 victory over the Brewers. Hamel and the Phils are -140 favorites at Toronto.

    - The US soccer team put together its best defensive effort in the 1-0 victory over Algeria that advanced it to the knockout stage. The shutout was the first recorded by the Americans in nine months. Coach Bob Bradley can be given some credit for the turnaround as he made a lineup adjustment that was questioned by analysts. Bradley replaced central defender Oguchi Onyewu with Jonathan Bornstein, and alongside the duo of Carlos Bocanegra and Jay DeMerit the trio stymied Algeria’s attack. Bradley said that Bornstein had “fresh legs coming into this game” and that “his energy, would help.” All three games Ghana has played in the World Cup have gone UNDER and the total for Saturday’s match is posted at 2.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at San Francisco Giants (+140, 8.5)

When the Red Sox announced during the offseason the team was going to focus on pitching and defense, many expected the potent Boston lineup to regress.

"I didn't really understand the questions that we wouldn't have a good offense," Victor Martinez said. "We lost a good guy in Jason Bay. But because you lost one guy, it doesn't mean that your offense is completely lost.”

Falling behind the Rays and Yankees through the first two months of the season magnified Boston’s offensive struggles. After a resurgent June that has the Sox just two games out of first place, the team is leading MLB in runs, hits, RBIs and OPS.

"We're getting contributions from all over the map," said manager Terry Francona. "I think that's why you're starting to see more personality, more enthusiasm, more energy during the games.”

Going into Friday, the BoSox had plated 19 runs in their previous two games. San Francisco will be trotting out fresh mound meat, Joe Martinez who has only one start this season, and Boston should feast on the right-hander Saturday.

      Pick: Over

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox (-120, 9)

The clubhouse curse must have floated from the South Side of the Windy City to the North Side.

On a day that should have been uplifting with the return of third baseman Aramis Ramirez from the disabled list, starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano made it a gloomy one.

After giving up four runs in the first inning, the temperamental Zambrano laid into teammate Derrek Lee for not diving for a ground ball down the line. Big Z was seen screaming at the team and Lee and eventually the two players had to be separated by manager Lou Piniella and bench coach Alan Trammell.

Piniella sent Zambrano into the clubhouse and Tom Gorzelanny replaced him on the mound in the second inning. It looks as if serious repercussions will be administered.

"It's unacceptable behavior is what it is," Piniella said. "He was upset that some of our players didn't dive for those balls. He was ranting and raving and out of control. I had a discussion with our general manager to see what we do. I couldn't tolerate it."

Carlos Silva has been stellar this season for Chicago but a number this low backing a team with a 10-game win streak is a bargain. And with the state the Cubbies are currently in, the South Siders should take all three games from their counterpart in the Crosstown Classic.

      Pick: White Sox

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Streaking

Carl Pavano (8-6, 3.64), Minnesota Twins

The mustache must be working for Carl Pavano. Minnesota’s right-hander is 3-0 in his last three starts and went at least seven innings in each. Pavano threw a complete game in his most recent outing, limiting the Phillies offense to four hits in a 4-1 victory.

“Pavano was fantastic,” Ron Gardenhire said after the game. “That’s an unbelievable lineup they have over there, but he kept them off balance and got his pitches over for strikes.”

Pavano and the Twins are +115 underdogs facing the New York Mets Saturday.

Clay Buchholz (10-4, 2.47), Boston Red Sox

Boston’s current ace shutout the Dodgers in his last start, giving up three hits over 6.2 innings of work for a 2-0 victory. Buchholz has won his last two starts and is 8-2 since early May.

“Just a maturing young pitcher,” manager Terry Francona said. “His stuff is so good, now that he’s got some repetition under his belt the game doesn’t speed up for him.”

Most of the Giants lineup has never seen Buchholz and the oddsmakers are well aware, making the BoSox a -155 favorite in San Fran on Saturday.

      Slumping

      A.J. Burnett (6-6, 4.83), New York Yankees

The wheels are falling off for New York starter A.J. Burnett. The righty has given up 23 earned runs in 20.0 innings pitched in June with only 13 strikeouts. In his last outing, Burnett was chased out of the game after only four innings after giving up three bombs in the first inning and seven runs overall.

"I don't feel like myself," Burnett said after the game. "I'm not having fun right now. Who would in a stretch like this? When you come out and take the air out of your team right away for a handful of starts, it gets quite frustrating. I'm going to keep plugging away.”

Burnett is 0-4 in four June starts and the Yankees are a pick ‘em (-110) against the Dodgers in L.A. Saturday.

      Returning

Doug Fister (3-3, 2.45), Seattle Mariners

Fister was once the AL leader in ERA but has been on the disabled list since May 31 because of shoulder fatigue. Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said that Fister will be on an 85-pitch count in his return Saturday.

Fister is a crafty righty that isn’t going to blow hitters away. He has a high ground ball rate and great control so his effectiveness comes from keeping hitters off balance. Fister was starting to get touched up a bit before going on the DL, yielding 10 runs over his last three starts.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 26 in Baseball History...

1916 - Cleveland players, in a game with the White Sox, wear numbers on their sleeves, marking the first time players are identified by numbers corresponding to those on the scorecard.

1920 - Lou Gehrig gets his first national mention when, as a high school junior for New York City's School of Commerce, he hits a grand slam in a high school championship game against Lane Tech in Chicago. Scouts sit with open mouths as the ball sails out of the N.L. park (later known as Wrigley Field).

1935 - Lloyd Waner sets a major-league record with 18 putouts in center field in a doubleheader as the Pirates take a pair from the Braves at Boston.

1940 - More than 50,000 pack the Polo Grounds to watch the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants play each other in a six-inning contest to raise money for war bonds. Each team plays successive innings against the other two teams, then sits out an inning. The final score is Dodgers 5, Yankees 1, Giants, 0.

1960 - Hoping to speed up the election process, the Hall of Fame changes its voting procedures. The new rules allow the Special Veterans Committee to vote annually, rather than every other year, and to induct up to two players a year. The BBWAA is authorized to hold a runoff election of the top 30 vote getters if no one is elected in the first ballot.

1968 - The major league Executive Council decides that both the A.L. and N.L. will play 162-game schedules in 1969 and operate two six-team divisions.

1971 - Last year's A.L. batting king, Alex Johnson, is suspended by the Angels following a series of incidents (including five benchings and 29 fines) resulting from failure to hustle.

1994 - Kirby Puckett becomes Minnesota's all-time hits leader by getting three safeties to pass Rod Carew with his 2,088 hit as a Twin.

1997 - Tony Gwynn of the Padres breaks a seventh-inning tie with an inside-the-park grand slam as San Diego beats Los Angeles, 9-7. The opposite-field hit not only puts Gwynn back over the .400 mark, but is also the first N.L. inside-the-park grand slam in six years.

            Daily Sports Roundup: June 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Uruguay takes on South Korea and the United States battles Ghana in World Cup matchups, while the Mets play host to Minnesota.

            Chasing the World Cup . . .

The Round of 16 begins at the World Cup in South Africa on Saturday, with Uruguay vs. South Korea and the United States vs. Ghana. Uruguay won Group A with seven points, and they're -120 favorites against South Korea (+350), which finished second in Group B with four points. Draw odds for that match are +230. The United States is favored at +135 over Ghana after they won a tiebreaker atop Group C with England with five points. Ghana, which finished second in Group D with four points, is the +200 underdog with draw odds of +220. Winners of those two games go to the quarterfinals.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Mets will send Johan Santana (5-4, 3.31 ERA) to the mound on Saturday afternoon as they continue their interleague series against the Twins and Carl Pavano (8-6, 3.64 ERA). Lefthander Santana will be looking to bounce back from a loss to the Yankees in his last outing; Santana gave up four earned runs on eight hits over his six innings of work in that contest, and fanned just three. Righthander Pavano dominated the Phillies in his last start, allowing just one run on four hits over nine innings pitched.

Also on the MLB schedule for Saturday: San Diego at Florida, St. Louis at Kansas City, Houston at Texas, Washington at Baltimore, Philadelphia at Toronto, Arizona at Tampa Bay, Seattle at Milwaukee, Detroit at Atlanta, the Yankees at the Dodgers, Cleveland at Cincinnati, the Cubs at the White Sox, Colorado at the Angels, Pittsburgh at Oakland, and Boston at San Francisco. Clay Buchholz (10-4, 2.47 ERA) will take on Joe Martinez (0-1, 4.91 ERA) in that BoSox/Giants matchup. Righthander Buchholz has won seven of his last eight starts, allowing no more than three runs in any outing.

            Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there's just one game on the WNBA schedule for Saturday with Minnesota at San Antonio. The Lynx (5-9 straight-up, 7-7 against-the-spread) have won three straight games, beating New York 75-68 on the road last time out. Minnesota guard Candice Wiggins is out for the season with a ruptured achilles tendon. The Silver Stars (4-7 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) were bounced 82-61 on the road by Seattle last time out. Becky Hammon and Chamique Holdsclaw each scored 12 points for San Antonio that game.

              Saturday's six-pack

Comparing stats for three National League pitchers, two you've heard of and one maybe you haven't.......

              Stephen Strasburg--
              vs 3-4-5 hitters-- 10-32 (.313), .389 on-base percentage
              vs everyone else-- 9-62 (.145), .159 OB%

              Ubaldo Jimenez--
              vs 3-4-5 hitters-- 23-127 (.181) .262 on-base percentage
              vs everyone else-- 52-244 (.213), .289 OB%

              RA Dickey--
              vs 3-4-5 hitters-- 15-58 (.259) .317 on-base percentage
              vs everyone else-- 31-118 (.263), .341 OB%

              ************************************************** ****

Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff for a summer Saturday.......

              13) John Isner didn't last long in second round match, losing 6-0/6-3/6-2, after winning that amazing first round match. Isner is 6-9, 245- imagine if he was on the other side of net, hitting balls back at you? Isner is 23-14 in singles play this season, with earnings of $682,262. Hopefully, he'll get himself an endorsement or two after winning an incredible match, longest in tennis history.

              12) Surprised that John Wall is first Kentucky player taken first in NBA Draft; Sam Bowie was taken second (just ahead of Michael Jordan). You would think with all the success Kentucky has had, one of their guys had to be the first player taken, but until Thursday, nope.

              11) Fred Hoiberg made a terrific hire at Iowa State, hiring Bobby Lutz as an assistant coach. Lutz is the former Charlotte coach who won a lot with the 49ers but then got undermined by their ill-advised move to the A-14. Hoiberg needed an experienced advisor, since he's a rookie coach.

              10) Arizona football coach Mike Stoops has to be happy the Pac-12 isn't the Pac-16; he spoke out against his Wildcats being in same division as the Longhorns and Sooners, figuring he'd start every year with an 0-2 record. Now, being in same divison as ASU/Utah/Colorado/USC/UCLA ain't bad.

              9) If newly-signed Marc Bulger ever starts a game for Baltimore, they've got to put an NFL Films mike on Ray Lewis that day; I want to hear what he has to say watching Bulger play. He won't be happy.

              8) Rush Limbaugh is the next celebrity Hank Haney will tutor on his TV show on The Golf Channel; I'm guessing Limbaugh's shots lean mostly to the right. We'll see if Haney can make him more middle-of-the-road.

              7) One face we'd love to see a lot mohr of: Samantha Mohr of the Weather Channel; feel free to put her on the air as much as you'd like.............

              6) Worst team in NBA history is the '73 Sixers, who went 9-73, but just four years later, they played in NBA Finals, losing to Portland. First guy they took in the '73 Draft? Their new coach, Doug Collins.

              5) Jamie Moyer has given up 504 homers in his career, first of which was Jiune 23, 1986, to Juan Samuel, current manager of the Orioles.

              4) Coming into Friday's game, Martin Prado of the Braves is 34-80 (.425) when he puts one of the first two pitches of an at-bat into play; he's just 6-29 (.207) after the count goes 3-0/3-1, so why would you throw him any strikes early in the count? It makes no sense.

              3) Tampa Bay Rays have now been no-hit three times in last 338 days, with two of the three no-hitters perfect games.

              2) Jose Reyes was just 17-82 (.207) in the ill-suited experiement that had him batting 3rd; he is 67-209 (.321) when batting leadoff.

              1) Pat Riley owns the rights to the phrase "three-peat", or "3-peat" so if the Lakers were to win the NBA again next year, it would figure to put a lot more money into Riley's wallet. I'm sure Phil Jackson loves that.
