Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Celtics-Lakers total has moved up from 188 at some books and down to 186.5 at others. The last three finals games have played under the total.

Athletics-Cubs total for Tuesday’s interleague series opener should not only factor in the wind at Wrigley Field but also possible thundershowers hitting Chicago Tuesday.

    Weather to watch

The forecast for Port Elizabeth, South Africa is calling for rain Tuesday and Wednesday, giving the World Cup a good soaking. Portugal faces Ivory Coast at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium at 10 a.m. ET Tuesday.

    Injury to watch

-- Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba is waiting to see if FIFA will let him play with a protective cast on his arm after injuring his arm in a warm-up match before the start of the World Cup. Drogba is one of the most talented players in the world and would be ready to play if FIFA gives him approval. Ivory Coast faces Portugal in Group G play Tuesday.

-- Lakers sixth man Lamar Odom is suffering with flu-like symptoms and played through the illness Monday, scoring eight points off the bench in L.A.’s Game 5 loss. He’s averaging just under 10 points a game for the Lakers in the postseason.

"I haven't been sick all season … now I'm sick in the Finals," Odom told the Los Angeles Times. "Had to put my hard hat on just to get out of bed. It was tough.

"I'm not feeling good, but I'm not making any excuses. I've just got to be ready to play."

    Who’s hot?

The Los Angeles Angels swept their NL rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and are 8-2 in their last 10 games heading into Tuesday’s opener with the Milwaukee Brewers in Anaheim.

The New York Mets have won eight of their last 10 games including four straight heading into their interleague tilt with the Cleveland Indians starting Tuesday.

    Who's not?

The Pittsburgh Pirates have just one win in the last 10 outings and have lost eight in a row heading into Tuesday’s series opener with the Chicago White Sox.

The Seattle Mariners are 2-8 in their last 10 games, losing five in a row before snapping that skid with a win over the San Diego Padres Sunday. The Mariners, who are -17.18 units on the year, face the St. Louis Cardinals starting Monday night.

    Key stat

0-for-16 - Boston Celtics sharp-shooting guard Ray Allen is 0-for-16 from beyond the arc since breaking the NBA Finals record with eight 3-pointers in Game 2 of the NBA Finals last week. Allen scored 12 points in Boston’s Game 5 victory but was 0-for-4 from outside.

    Game of the day

The NBA Finals continues in Los Angeles but the Ivory Coast vs. Portugal in Group G should be plenty entertaining. Oddsmakers have priced Portugal as a +125 favorite on the moneyline.

    Notable quote

"Bad question. Those guys up there want to know that." – Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, when asked by one of his basketball camp players whether he was going to make the move to the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers. “Those guys up there” refers to the media attending the camp.

    Tips and notes

-- The Chicago Sky may be without starting center Shameka Christon for Tuesday’s game against the Atlanta Dream. She was hit by an elbow in the face in Friday’s loss to Washington and was taken to hospital for observation. Christon is averaging 8.5 points and two blocks per game this season.

"She's a big loss," guard Jia Perkins told the Chicago Daily Herald. "She's a big part of our team offensively and defensively."

-- Only six teams have rebounded from a Game 5 loss with the series tied 2-2 and come back to win the NBA Championship. The last team to do so were the Houston Rockets, who won Games 6 and 7 in Houston to beat the New York Knicks in 1994.

Funny enough, Celtics coach Doc Rivers was on that Knicks team.

"We had opportunities, obviously, in Games 6 and 7," Rivers told reporters. "You know, that's a bitter memory obviously for me. I was injured sitting on the bench, so it just felt like you couldn't help individually. You know, as a team we had a lot of great opportunities in that series, in Game 6 and 7 if you remember. But it just didn't happen."

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 188)

Phil Jackson is probably the most criticized coach in all of basketball.

While no one can deny his NBA title rings (which he’ll have to get converted into toe rings or some other type of ring, wink, wink - if the Lakers manage to come back), Jackson’s methods are getting a bit long in the tooth.

Jackson, who was wearing a microphone for Monday’s 92-86 loss in Game 5, blasted his competition in one of his timeout rants. He’s been known to throw verbal barbs at opponents and officials in hopes of rattling them out of their game.

"(The Celtics have) lost more games in the fourth quarter than anybody in the NBA," Jackson said in the huddle. "They know how to lose in the fourth quarter, alright? They're just showing us that right now."

Those comments trickled back to the Celtics following win. However, instead of jumping on those words like most of Jackson’s foes, the Celtics simply brushed off the comment in the postgame press conference.

"You know, he's right. What you just said, that's been the truth for us throughout the regular season,” Celtics star Paul Pierce told the media.

"I haven't really seen too much of that in the playoffs, but coaches say things to try to motivate their team. He's supposed to give them confidence. He's supposed to say something like that. I probably would say the same thing if I was a coach in that situation. It doesn't bother me at all."

Boston’s veteran squad will not be rattled by Jackson’s tiring physiological warfare or the near 19,000 screaming fans inside the Staples Center Tuesday night. Basketball bettors should expect another tight one in Game 6.

          Pick: Boston +6.5

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Celtics at Lakers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 187.5)

The NBA Finals tips Tuesday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles Lakers host the Boston Celtics meet in a Game 6 elimination scenario for the home side. Let’s take a look at tonight’s matchup:

          Help wanted

Despite finishing with a game-high 38 points, including 23 in a row at one point in the contest, Kobe Bryant’s brilliant effort was not enough Sunday with Boston winning 92-86 to take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Not enough when only one other Laker reached double figures. That was Pau Gasol with 12 points.

Ron Artest, the big-ticket free agent bust signed last summer, had seven points and missed two critical free throws with 43.3 seconds remaining that could have brought the Lakers to within three points. Moments later Artest let Rajon Rondo go unguarded on an inbounds pass for a back-breaking layup in the final seconds.

Lamar Odom had eight points, Derek Fisher nine and Andrew Bynum six.

As great as Bryant is, he can't single-handedly carry the Lakers to a championship.

It was all Kobe Sunday night and nobody else, with the rest of the Lakers standing around and watching Bryant do all the heavy lifting.

"You know, other than (Kobe), you look at the assists, we had 12 and (the Celtics) had 21," pointed out Lakers head coach Phil Jackson.

"It's basically home court, home court," Jackson said. "Now we're going back home to win it. That's the way it's supposed to be, right?”

          Piercing blow

When asked before Game 5 of how Boston could get him more involved in the series, Paul Pierce said simply, "Just get me the ball. Like Keyshawn Johnson."

His words proved prophetic when Pierce scored 27 points, his best performance of this year's Finals.

Leading by as many as 13 points in the third quarter and looking poised for a blowout, the Celtics were paced by Pierce’s 13 points in the stanza.

Pierce was the MVP of the 2008 Finals when the Celtics beat the Lakers to raise an NBA-record 17th banner to the rafters at Boston's the Garden in Boston.

In Sunday’s contest, Boston shot 56.3 percent, its highest percentage in the playoffs.

"I know they were shooting a high percentage, but it gets that way when you shoot layups in this game," barked Jackson.

          Mic me up

Jackson was wearing a microphone for Sunday’s Game 5 TV broadcast when he told his team during a late timeout, "This team loses more games in the fourth quarter than any team in the league. They know how to lose games, and they're showing us that now."

The Lakers got within six points several times, but never any closer.

          Flirting with history

The Zen Master’s 47-0 record in a NBA playoff series after winning the first game of a series is on the line tonight.

NBA history is not on the Lakers' side as they try to become only the seventh team to win the Finals after returning home trailing 3-2.

L.A.’s history is a little more favorable, however; they rallied to beat Detroit by winning games six and seven in 1988.

In addition, of the 25 Finals that have been tied at two-apiece, the winner of Game 5 has won 19 of them.

The last time a team rallied to win Games 6 and 7 was Houston in 1994 against New York.

"We have a challenge, obviously, down, 3-2… but it is what it is," said Bryant, the Finals MVP last year when the Lakers beat Orlando.

"Now you go home. You've got two games at home that you need to win and you pull your boots up and get to work."

          Dial 666

          Game 6 Super Stats:

          • The Lakers are 10-6 straight up (SU) and 5-10-1 against the spread (ATS) in Game 6’s since 1991, including 4-3 SU and 0-7 ATS off a loss.

          • The Celtics are 7-6 SU and 9-4 ATS in Game 5’s, including 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS off a win.

          • Home teams in Game 6 of the Finals are 7-4 SU and 3-8 ATS since 1991.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Angels (-155)

It looked for awhile like the Halos had too many holes to match their usual dominance in the AL West. Their lineup was spotty, especially with power-hitting first baseman Kendry Morales out for the year, and starting rotation routinely let manager Mike Scioscia down.

But things are going much better for the Angels. The starters have an ERA under 4.00 since the first week of May and sleeping batters Hideki Matsui and Erick Aybar have come alive. L.A.’s other team is 13-3 in its last 16 games heading into Monday night’s game.

"We definitely knew what we had," start Scott Kazmir told ESPN Los Angeles. "We knew it was going to turn around for us sooner or later."

            Pick: Angels

New York Mets at Cleveland Indians (+133)

Don’t like the leader in the NL East? Wait a week and it’ll be someone else. The latest club making a charge is New York. The Mets have four in a row and eight of their last nine contests.

Slumping slugger Jason Bay was the latest Met to shake off the rust. The left fielder went 4-for-4 with a double and a homer in Sunday’s 11-4 win over the Orioles.

"I feel like I changed a lot today, but I watched my at-bats on video and they looked identical to what I've been doing," Bay told the New York Post after the game. "But I'm not making wholesale changes. It's always one subtle thing that even I wouldn't notice."

            Pick: Mets

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

            David Price, Tampa Bay Rays

Before Steven Strasburg there was David Price. The Rays lefty is just another young hurler delivering for the once laughingstock franchise. Tampa Bay is 6-1 in Price’s last seven trips to the hill and the Nashville native has eight quality starts in his last nine outings.

"He's got such good stuff," Rays catcher Dioner Navarro said after Price disposed of the hot-hitting Jays. "If he stays ahead of hitters, it's really difficult to get him."

            Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins

If Josh Johnson read cov.com, we feel confident we’d make the guy blush. That’s because we’ve got nothing but love for this Marlin ace. Johnson did the unthinkable in his last start.

He went on the road and beat the Phillies even with Roy Halladay dealing a gem. The 6-foot-7 righty pitched eight innings, allowed just four base runners and kept the Phils scoreless.

"Johnson is one of the better pitchers in our league," Philly manager Charlie Manuel told the Associated Press after the game. "We didn't hit many balls hard. Outside of Raul Ibanez (who singled in the second), I'm trying to think of another ball we hit hard. We couldn't get to him."

Florida is 8-1 in Johnson’s last nine starts and the under is 4-1-1 in his last six outings.

            Brett Cecil, Toronto Blue Jays

This budding southpaw has been a golden nugget for astute bettors. Cecil, who’s still not a household name, is 7-2 with a 3.22 ERA and a WHIP (walks + hits per inning) under 1.00.

Better yet, the Jays are 6-0 in his last six trips to the bump and four of those games he was priced as an underdog. The under is also 5-0 in his last five appearances.

            Slumping

            Jeff Suppan, St. Louis Cardinals

The Cards are hoping their pitching guru Dave Duncan can resurrect Suppan’s career. The 6-3 righthander was a regular contributor for St. Louis from 2004-06 but he left Missouri for a richer contract in Milwaukee.

The Brewers recently gave up on him after four forgettable years of service. Before they cut ties, the Brew Crew had Suppan coming out of the bullpen. Let’s just say that didn’t go over so well.

He allowed eight runs in his last three outings, which totaled just four innings. Yikes.

            This Day in Baseball
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 15 in Baseball History...

1928 - Ty Cobb, 41 years old, steals home for the 50th and final time in his 24-year career to extend his major league record. It comes in the eighth inning against the Indians. In a 12-5 Tiger win, Veach, Crawford and Cobb team up for a triple steal.

1931 - Cut-down day for major league rosters brings the retirement of Eddie Collins and Harry Heilmann. Collins becomes a coach for the A's. Heilmann will return briefly to the Reds in 1932.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer stuns baseball by pitching his second successive no-hitter, defeating the Dodgers 6-0, as Brooklyn plays the first night game ever at Ebbets Field. In front of 38,748 fans, including spectator Babe Ruth, Vandy strikes out seven and walks eight, including three walks in the ninth. A force at home and a fly ball end the game.

1948 - The Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Athletics 4-1 before a crowd of 54,480 in the first night game at Briggs Stadium. The Tigers are the last A.L. team to install lights.

1949 - Eddie Waitkus of the Phillies is shot by 19-year-old Ruth Steinhagen at Chicago's Edgewater Beach Hotel. She will later be placed in a mental hospital. Waitkus battles for his life and will come back to play the following season.

1953 - Duane Pillette of the St. Louis Browns ends the Yankees' win streak at 18 and the Browns' team record 14-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory in Yankee Stadium. Johnny Mize becomes the 93rd player in baseball history to get 2,000 hits when he singles in the Yankees' run in the fifth.

1961 - The expansion Senators are 30-30 after winning today. It is the latest date an expansion team will be at .500. Washington will lose it next 10 games.

1965 - Tigers pitcher Denny McLain makes a first-inning relief appearance and fans the first seven batters he faces, setting a major league record. He has 14 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings as Detroit rallies to beat Boston 6-5. Bill Freehan has a record-tying 19 putouts at catcher.

1969 - The Mets help their power needs by adding first baseman Donn Clendenon. The 33-year-old had refused a January trade that would send him from Montreal to Houston, but he agrees to go to New York. The Expos receive Steve Renko, Kevin Collins, and two minor leaguers. The Expos also purchase pitcher Dick Radatz from the Tigers.

1976 - Rain out! The scheduled game at the Astrodome is canceled when heavy rains make it difficult for the visiting team and umpires to get through flooded streets to the stadium.

1977 - New York fans are in shock as the Mets trade ace pitcher Tom Seaver to the Reds. In return they get pitcher Pat Zachry, infielder Doug Flynn, and minor leaguers Steve Henderson and Dan Norman. The Mets also trade slugger Dave Kingman to the Padres for utility player Bobby Valentine and a minor league pitcher.

1983 - In what will turn out to be a terrible trade for St. Louis, the Cardinals trade first baseman Keith Hernandez to the Mets for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey.

1992 - Jeff Reardon of the Red Sox breaks Rollie Fingers' all-time save record with No. 342 in a 1-0 win over the Yankees.

1997 - In one of the more surprising developments of the first weekend of interleague baseball, the Orioles complete a sweep of the Braves at Turner Field on Lenny Webster's tenth inning home run off Mark Wohlers. One byproduct of interleague play that wasn't a surprise was the increase at the turnstiles. Attendance was up nearly 10,000 per game for the weekend, and the Mariners averaged 52,074 for their four interleague games in the Kingdome.

Atlanta Dream at Chicago Sky (-2.5, 164)

It must feel like the sky is falling for Chicago. In their last two outings, the Sky have watched their opponents drain countless buckets, burying the team in a two-game losing skid.

Chicago’s defense couldn’t do anything to stop the Washington Mystics Friday, allowing Washington to shoot nearly 62 percent from the field for a 95-78 beating. The game before that, the Sky could only hold the New York Liberty to 53 percent shooting from the floor, falling 85-70.

"They just got a lot of easy shots," Chicago guard Dominique Canty told the Chicago Daily Herald following Friday’s defeat. "We got away from our defensive game plan."

Throwing salt on the wound was an injury to starting center Shameka Christon Friday. She played just three minutes before taking an elbow to the face. She left the game and was taken to hospital for observation. Christon is averaging 8.5 point and two blocks per game this season. Her status for Tuesday is unknown.

"She's a big loss," guard Jia Perkins said of Christon. "She's a big part of our team offensively and defensively."

              Pick: Atlanta

                        NBA Finals

Celtics won their first three series this spring in 6-6-5 games, so they've had good killer instinct this spring; Lakers 9-1 at home in playoffs, but if they don't finish 11-1, they'll be disappointed. Artest had just 7 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists; Lakers other than Bryant/Odom shot 14-45 in last game. Boston is killing the Lakers on loose ball/hustle plays; will switch to Staples Center invigorate hosts? Celtics scored 89-84 points in losses this series; they scored 103-96-92 in wins. Boston has gotten help from its bench. Lakers will need Vujacic to hit shots to hurt defense after they doubleteam Bryant.
