    Daily Sports Roundup: June 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Major League Baseball launches its second stage of interleague play, while the World Cup gets going in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

    Chasing World Cup glory . . .

The World Cup kicks off on Friday with two games on tap: South Africa vs. Mexico (10am ET), and Uruguay vs. France (2:30pm ET). The host nation is a +175 underdog against Mexico (+145) in the opening match, with the draw odds set at +225. France is then favored at EVEN odds over Uruguay (+265) in the second game of the day, with those draw odds at +225 as well. Those four teams make up Group A of the tournament, with France set as the +125 favorite to win that division. Mexico is next at +275, followed by Uruguay at +350, and then South Africa down at the bottom at +600.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Interleague play resumes around Major League Baseball on Friday, with a schedule that includes a Bay Area matchup between the Athletics and Giants in San Francisco. Oakland is expected to send Gio Gonzalez (6-3, 3.58 ERA) to the mound for that contest, with the Giants countering with ace Tim Lincecum (5-2, 3.20 ERA). Lefthander Gonzalez beat the Twins in his last trip to the mound (two runs over seven innings), and he also beat the Giants back on May 22 (eight shutout innings). Righthander Lincecum took a no-decision in his last outing against the Pirates, surrendering three earned runs on six hits over seven innings of work in that contest, and striking out six.

Arizona hosts St. Louis in the NL-only matchup for Friday, while the rest of the interleague slate has the Mets at Baltimore, the White Sox at the Cubs, Pittsburgh at Detroit, Washington at Cleveland, Florida at Tampa Bay, Philadelphia at Boston, Kansas City at Cincinnati, Texas at Milwaukee, Atlanta at Minnesota, Toronto at Colorado, Seattle at San Diego, the Angels at the Dodgers, and Houston at the Yankees. The Astros' Brett Myers (4-3, 3.01 ERA) is set to take on New York's Andy Pettitte (7-1, 2.47 ERA) in that last matchup. Houston is 7-3 in Myers' last 10 trips to the mound, while the Yankees have picked up the win eight times in Pettitte's last 10 starts.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are five games on the WNBA schedule for Friday, with Atlanta at New York, Indiana at Connecticut, Tulsa at San Antonio, Washington at Chicago, and Los Angeles at Seattle. The Sparks (2-6 straight-up, 2-6 against-the-spread) have lost all four of their road games so far this season; Los Angeles edged Phoenix 92-91 at home last time out. The Storm (8-1 SU, 6-3 ATS) blasted Phoenix 97-74 in their last game; Lauren Jackson and Swin Cash each tossed in 16 points for Seattle that night.

Bettor's best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Line off the board

White Sox at Cubs – The uncertainty of wind speed and direction at Wrigley has kept this game’s total from being posted.

Lines to keep an eye on

Marlins at Rays – Most sportsbooks have moved the total in this game to 8.5 after opening at 9.

Royals at Reds – Cincy was released as a -170 favorite but the home squad has moved to as low as -155 on a few boards.

Rangers at Brewers – This game’s total opened at 10 but sharp money quickly dropped it to 9.5.

Braves at Twins – The total for this game has moved to 7.5 after opening at 8. Tim Hudson and Francisco Liriano will oppose each other on the mound.

      Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

White Sox at Cubs – A 16 mph wind is projected to blow in from right field and there is a 30 percent chance of rain in the latter stages of the game.

Braves at Twins – A 50 percent chance of rain is expected throughout the game.

Royals at Reds – A 40-50 percent chance of rain is called for as well as a 9 mph wind blowing out to center field.

Blue Jays at Rockies – The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of precipitation.

      Who’s hot

The Giants have played to the OVER in nine of their last 12 road games, including a 7-6 outing Thursday.

The home team is 4-0 SU and ATS in the last four Indiana-Connecticut games (WNBA). Connecticut is the home squad and laying 3.5 points Friday.

Houston is 8-2 SU in its last 10 games.

      Who’s not

The Cubs have dropped eight of their last 12 games.

San Antonio (WNBA) is 0-4 SU and ATS in its last four games.

The Marlins were on a four-game slide going into Thursday.

      Key stat

12 – Number of wins by the Reds this season in their final at-bat – the most in the bigs. Cincinnati also has 21 come-from-behind victories which is also good for the top mark in the majors.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury likely will be sidelined until the All-Star break after it was discovered he had another fractured rib. The team’s doctor said Ellbury will “require several weeks” of rest and physical therapy before returning to action. Ellsbury led the majors in stolen bases last year with 70 but has played only nine games this season, hitting .250 with just two stolen bases.

      Notable quotable

“On behalf of the Stanford Athletics Department, I would like to welcome and congratulate the University of Colorado on its inclusion to the Pacific-10 Conference. Colorado’s rich and proud athletic tradition and exceptional student-athletes make the University an ideal fit for our conference. As the landscape of intercollegiate athletics continues to evolve, I have full confidence in the leadership of Commissioner Larry Scott and the foresight of our conference presidents that they will continue to make wise and bold decisions in the best interest of the Pac-10 Conference.”

-- Stanford Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby said in a statement issued Thursday.

      Tips and notes

      - South Africa is the host country in this year’s World Cup and never has a host failed to get out of the group stage. The home team faces Mexico on Friday in what will be an emotional game, but based on the host country bias Mexico could be a bit undervalued in this match at -114. Analysts believe this South Africa team is the least-talented host since the U.S. in 1994. Much is being made about playing in the altitude but Mexico is actually more elevated than South Africa so they will have the advantage there.

      - The Cubs traveled back from Milwaukee Thursday evening and while it’s not that long of a trip, the team has to turn around and play the White Sox in a 1:20 p.m. start Friday. To compound matters, the Cubs and Brewers played 10 innings in their series finale and Chicago used four pitchers out of the bullpen. None of the relievers went more than 1.1 innings but all threw at least 17 pitches. The White Sox hold a 37-35 edge in the Crosstown Classic and won four of the six games last season.

      - Reigning NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum has been a shell of his former self recently. He’s 0-2 in four starts since his last winning decision on May 15 and could still be hampered by a lingering injury. Going into his start against Washington on May 26, Lincecum was dealing with a blister on his pitching hand but the Giants have not been receptive to media questions about it. There is also speculation that the blister is actually a cracked nail on Lincecum’s middle finger. San Fran’s ace has given up 17 runs in his last four starts and is -188 chalk at home Friday.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs (-135)

Things are not going well in the Land of Oz – Ozzie Guillen that is.

With a 26-33 record, the White Sox have publicly stated almost every member of the team is on the trading block. The squad from the Southside of Chicago has greatly underachieved this season and general manager Kenny Williams looks ready to clean house.

“Some changes need to take place. I don't know what and I don't when but some changes need to take place,” Williams said. “Things aren't happening the way that we envisioned and when they don't happen the way you envision you've got to make an adjustment.”

And it’s not just the Sox players that are in hot water. Guillen, whose tense relationship with Williams has been well documented, could find his head under the guillotine at a moment’s notice

The AL’s league leader in home runs, Paul Konerko, is being courted by teams around MLB as well as veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Chicago is also listening to offers for relief pitchers Bobby Jenks, Matt Thornton, J.J. Putz and Scott Linebrink.

Trade and firing talk is never a good thing for clubhouse chemistry so don’t expect Chicago to extend its winning streak against the cross-town rival Cubs on Friday.

        Pick: Cubs

Los Angeles Angels at Los Angeles Dodgers (-160, 8.5)

Los Angeles is beginning to heat up at this time of the year and its two baseball teams are adding fuel to the fire.

Since June 1, the Dodgers and Angels have been two of the most profitable teams in the majors. The boys in blue have gone 7-2 (+5.15 units) this month while the Halos are 7-3 (+3.57 units) and both teams have put together winning streaks of four games or more.

So how do we make a pick between two clubs playing great ball and surging to the top of their respective divisions? Well, recent history tells us the home team doesn’t hold much of an edge in this series as the visitors have taken five out of the last seven games.

But this rivalry has traditionally played tight, with the margin of victory last season being a minute 1.83 runs per game.

The Dodgers hold the best NL mark in one-run games this season at 15-6, including a 9-1 home record, and that could come in handy in what should be a close, low-scoring affair in this interleague series opener.

        Pick: Under

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Streaking

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (3-0, 3.20 ERA)

The Mets' right hander has yet to taste defeat in 2010, posting three wins and a no decision in his first four starts for New York. The knuckleball pitcher has shown a steadiness after getting into early trouble, rebounding from a rough start last Friday for a three-run, seven-hit showing through 6.1 innings of work. He’s been able to eat up innings, averaging more than six innings per start in 2010.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado Rockies (11-1, 0.93 ERA)

The National League Cy Young favorite faces AL foes, the Toronto Blue Jays, in interleague play Friday. Jimenez has stayed sharp in June, going 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs on six hits in his last start. He’s won four straight outings and hasn’t been defeated since May 9. He’s never faced the Blue Jays in his MLB career, but should be a worthy foe for the best home-run hitting team in the bigs. Jimenez has given up just two dingers this season.

        Slumping

Kevin Correia, San Diego Padres (5-4, 5.03 ERA)

The Padres’ righty lasted only 1.2 innings in his most recent start, giving up four earned runs on four hits while walking three batters versus the Phillies. Correia has allowed 10 earned runs in his last two trips to the mound and, outside of a shutout effort on May 26, has served up 18 runs in his last five trips to the bump, walking 14 batters in that span.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (5-2, 2.30 ERA)

The two-time Cy Young winner just hasn’t been himself recently, going winless since May 15. While his most recent outing was a bit sharper, giving up three runs on six hits in a no-decision versus the Pirates, Lincecum did allow a home run for the fifth time this season. In the two starts before that, he allowed 11 earned runs for an ERA south of 8.00. He may be able to straighten himself out against the cross-bay A’s as he’s 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four starts versus Oakland.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        This Day in Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 11 in Baseball History...

1927 - During the ninth inning, the Philadelphia Athletics field a team of seven future Hall of Famers. The outfield consists of Ty Cobb in right, Al Simmons in center, and Zack Wheat in left. Jimmie Foxx is at first base, Eddie Collins is at second, and Lefty Grove pitches in relief. Cy Perkins started as catcher, but when Mickey Cochrane pinch-hit for him, seven Cooperstown-bound players were in the lineup.

1974 - Mel Stottlemyre makes his 272nd consecutive start, with no relief appearances, to set an A.L. record.

1985 - Von Hayes becomes the first major-league player ever to hit two home runs in the first inning, leading off with a home run and capping a nine-run outburst with a grand slam as the Phillies go on to rout the Mets 26-7. The 26 runs in one game are a club record and the most in the N.L. since 1944.

1988 - Yankees designated hitter Rick Rhoden hits a sacrifice fly in New York's 8-6 win over Baltimore. He is the first pitcher to start a game as a DH since the rule was adopted in 1973.

1990 - Ageless Nolan Ryan pitches his unprecedented sixth career no-hitter, striking out 14 batters in a 5-0 win over the A's. He is the first to pitch a no-hitter for three different teams, and the first to throw a no-hitter in three different decades.

1995 - Montreal's Rondell White has six hits, scores five runs, and hits for the cycle in a 13-inning 10-8 win over the Giants.

1997 - Kevin Brown pitches the first no-hitter of the season and the second no-hitter in Marlins history in a 9-0 win over the Giants in San Francisco. Brown has a perfect game going until he hits pinch-hitter Marvin Benard with a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the eighth inning. Benard is the only Giants player to reach base. San Francisco starter William Van Landingham also had a no-hitter for six innings before Charles Johnson's home run in the seventh breaks up the bid and triggers a Florida offensive explosion.

          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Sparks at Seattle Storm (-9, 155)

The race in the Western Conference is heating up with the Seattle Storm leading the conference after a big win over Phoenix Sunday. However, things could get interesting if the Los Angeles Sparks can find their form.

Los Angeles grabbed a big win over the Mercury Tuesday, scoring a 92-91 win on a last-second jumper from star forward Candace Parker. That victory snapped a three-game losing skid and has the Sparks feeling confident heading into this matchup with the Storm.

"I think the difference this time was that we had the last defensive stop," Parker told reporters following the win. "We had the toughness to fight back. Every possession matters."

Los Angeles was edged by Seattle, 79-75, in an outdoor game in L.A. last weekend, pushing with the 4-point spread. The average margin of victory between these two teams has been five points over their last five meetings, outside of a lopsided 81-67 Seattle win at the start of the year. That makes Friday’s 9-point number a touch high for WNBA bettors.

          Pick: Los Angeles

Indiana Fever at Connecticut Sun (-3.5, 146.5)

It’s always sunny in Mohegan Sun Arena. At least for the Connecticut Sun, who are a perfect 5-0 at home this season including a 5-0 mark against the spread. The Sun recently took wins over the visiting New York Liberty and San Antonio Silver Stars, holding both opponents to just 68 points.

Connecticut sits at 5-2 on the year, second in the Eastern Conference and credits its success to its depth. The Sun had nine different players on the score sheet in Sunday’s 81-68 win over San Antonio, including 27 points off the bench.

"We have great confidence in everyone," guard Kara Lawson, who joined the team from the defunct Sacramento franchise, told TheDay.com. "It's kind of normal for me to be honest. We were kind of like that at (Sacramento). We played everybody.”

Well, guys, that's all that's up for now. I guess they're going to do their normal Friday dragging of the heels on the stuff we really need.

It's 3 minutes til 7:00, central time, and I've got to get busy. I doubt very seriously I'll have time before mid-to-late afternoon to do any more.

Man, I wish these bozos wouldn't do this every Friday and Saturday!

I'll get it in as soon as I can. Good luck today, guys!

Top MLB Interleague Weekend Power Trends 6/11-6/13

The second batch of interleague games in Major League Baseball is on tap for this weekend, and as usual, there are some great regional, and even inter-city rivalries highlighting the slate. Unlike recent seasons, the National League proved more than competitive the first time around against its counterparts from the Junior Circuit, winning 22 of the 42 games. This weekend’s games should prove whether or not that was simply a fluke, or if the N.L. truly is closing the gap. Let’s take a look at some of the best matchups, including 3-game sets in Chicago, Tampa, Boston, and Minnesota, while also revealing this weekend’s list of Top ******* Power Trends to consider.

While neither of the teams in Chicago have gotten off to good starts in 2010, when the Sox and Cubs go head-to-head, it is always intense. The South Siders are 7-games under .500 while their neighbors to the north, the Cubs are 6-games below the median. The White Sox are embarking on a 3-stop road trip and come in as winners in three of their last four games overall. They are 7-5 against the Cubs over the last three years, but the latter are 4-2 at home during that stretch. The Cubs open a lengthy homestand in this set.

One of the more interesting series’ of the weekend is in Tampa, where the Rays host the Marlins. Florida has been one of the few N.L. teams that has actually fared well in interleague play since its inception, but still, they will be looking to snap a 2-10 skid against the Rays. Tampa Bay remains the league’s best team at this point, 18-games over .500 and leading the Yankees by 2-games in the A.L. East.

In Boston, the Phillies and Red Sox renew their emerging rivalry. Boston took two of three games in Philly two weeks back. There are distinct trends in interleague play converging on this series, with Phiilies’ manager Charlie Manuel owning an ugly 24-41 mark vs. A.L. East teams, and Sox skipper Terry Francona boasting a 43-17 record against the N.L. East clubs.

At new Target Field in Minneapolis, a pair of division leaders will get together for three games when the Braves visit the Twins. Surging Atlanta has taken control of the N.L. East Division with a huge run since early May. Ironically, they have cooled off of late, going just 3-4 in their L7 games despite pounding out over 11 hits per game during the stretch. The Twins have been one of the league’s best teams at home this year, going 20-10 while hitting .291 as a club, much of the reason for the comfy 4.5-game lead in the A.L. Central. Minnesota has also been great in interleague play, 28-11 for +16.8 units over the last three seasons.

There are also big series’ out west between the A’s and Giants, as well as the Dodgers and Angels, a series which is covered fully in the ******* MLB Series Betting regular feature.

Now, here’s a look at some of the Top ******* Power Trends you’ll want to utilize in your weekend wagering, including several focusing on interleague performance.
