Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

    Line off the board

Pirates at Nationals – Zack Duke and Livan Hernandez are the listed pitchers for this matchup but that could change.

Lines to keep an eye on

Yankees at Orioles – The home team opened as hefty +224 underdogs but most shops are offering the O’s as +210 pups currently.

Mariners at Rangers – Texas was released as a -180 favorite but the home squad has moved to -200 on a few boards.

Braves at Diamondbacks – Sportsbooks have moved the total in this game to 9.5 after opening at 10.

    Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Mariners at Rangers – A 13 mph wind is projected to blow in from right field and there is a 40 percent chance of rain throughout the game.

Red Sox at Indians – The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 16 mph wind to blow out to right-center field.

    Who’s hot

Cleveland has played to the OVER in 13 of its last 17 games (1 push).

Four of the five Stanley Cup finals games have gone OVER.

The Mets had won eight straight home games going into Tuesday.

    Who’s not

Houston has dropped 11 of its last 13 games on the road.

The UNDER is 12-3 in Tampa Bay’s last 15 home games.

Going into Tuesday, the Marlins had lost three straight and six of their last 10 games.

    Key stat

49 – Number of years Chicago has gone without an NHL championship. The Stanley Cup drought for the Blackhawks is the longest active streak in the league and the franchise could end that Wednesday.

    Return that shouldn’t be overlooked

Angels infielder Maicer Izturis returned to the lineup for Tuesday's game versus Oakland. Izturis has been sidelined for the past two games with soreness behind his right knee. He is batting .243 with two home runs and 14 RBIs this season. Los Angeles is one of the hottest teams in baseball right now, winners of six straight decisions.

    Game of the day

Chicago Blackhawks at Philadelphia Flyers (-120, 5.5)

    Notable quotable

"I really couldn't care less, to be honest with you. I got nothing to say, really. It's just another pitcher…Hey, Mark Prior."

-- Pirates outfielder Delwyn Young said prior to Stephen Strasburg’s debut. Young hit a two-run home run off of Strasburg in the fourth inning.

    Tips and notes

    - World Cup players have publicly slandered the “Jabulani” soccer ball issued by Adidas for the tournament. Goalkeepers have exercised the most criticism, contending the ball knuckles while moving through the air. U.S. netminder Tim Howard said he expects his team to use some practice time this week trying to learn how the ball behaves. What this means for soccer bettors is uncertain but if goaltenders are having trouble judging the flight of the ball then more goals could be scored. Check out an oddsmaker’s perspective on the issue here.

    - By the end of May, Toronto was leading the majors in home runs and runs scored. But the Jays’ lofty statistical totals weren’t due to quality hitting but instead, timely hitting. Toronto was hitting .232 as a team with the bases empty but .268 with runners in scoring position. The club’s weighted on-base percentage of .339 indicated that it should have been producing fewer runs than projected. Also, Blue Jays’ hitters have chased pitches out of the strike zone at a 31.1 percent clip – the highest mark in the AL. Toronto has been one of the most profitable teams in baseball this season (+12.25 units) but with nine straight road games and series with St. Louis and Philadelphia this team could begin to fade in June.

    - The Braves are the hottest team in the NL right now and Tim Hudson said he saw it coming. With the club since the 2005 season, the veteran pitcher said this team is his “favorite” since being in Atlanta and it has “the best team chemistry and the best personality.” Those words are music to a bettor’s ears. Kenshin Kawakami is 0-8 this season but favored at -105 in today’s matchup versus Ian Kennedy – Arizona’s best pitcher this year. The oddsmakers know better than to make Atlanta a dog in this one but the public could see Kawakami’s record and move the Braves into that role by gametime.

Chicago Blackhawks at Philadelphia Flyers (-120, 5.5)

It appears the cat is out of the bag.

After Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette kept fans and the media in the dark about the team's starting goalie for Game 6, the answer may have inadvertently leaked thanks to the world of social networking.

Following a Tuesday press conference, the Flyers’ official Twitter page reported that Michael Leighton would start Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Not long after, the tweet was replaced with this quote from Laviolette, which strongly suggests Leighton will start between the pipes: "Our goaltender has the best numbers in the playoffs; I don't think I have to announce it."

But does the decision really matter? Leighton has been pulled in two games of this series due to ineffectiveness and backup netminder Brian Boucher has been giving up goals at a high clip as well.

The goalies on both sides of this series have played second fiddle to the offenses. While the shots on goal totals for each team haven’t been off the charts, the scoring percentage has with an average of 8.00 shots per game finding the net.

The only contest in the finals that didn’t go over the posted total was Game 2. Five of the seven graded totals at Philadelphia this postseason have gone over and pucks should be flying again Wednesday.

            Pick: Over

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Blackhawks at Flyers
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Philadelphia Flyers (-120, 5.5)

            Chicago leads the series 3-2.

            Don’t call it a comeback

Even though the Flyers trail this series 3-2 and are one loss away from elimination, it’s safe to say they have the Blackhawks right where they want them.

Philadelphia has relished the role of underdog in the playoffs, bouncing back from certain death against the Boston Bruins in the second round and answering back with two wins at home after trailing Chicago 2-0 in the final.

“If any team gets it, this team gets it, because we’ve been here so many times,” head coach Peter Laviolette told the Toronto Star.

“To have our backs against the wall, we’ll be comfortable (Wednesday). I have no question that our team will respond in a manner in which it should so that we can be successful.”

The Flyers have been tremendous at home this postseason, going 8-1 inside the Wachovia Center including winning Games 3 and 4 against the Blackhawks. Philadelphia is scoring 3.70 goals per game at home while giving up an average of just two goals as host this postseason.

They’ve edged Chicago 9-6 in the two games in this series and haven’t lost to the Blackhawks inside the Wachovia Center in 10 games dating back to 1996.

"That's a stat that I don't look at," Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell told USA Today. "After you said that, it pretty much went out the ears and I'll move forward."

            Taking advantage

The Chicago power play finally showed up in the Stanley Cup Final, netting two goals in the Blackhawks’ 7-4 win in Game 5 Sunday. Chicago had scored just one power-play goal in the previous four games, improving to 3-for-13 on the man advantage in the final.

"We just settled down and played our game and that's a big factor, just even with the even strength, we came out ready to go, controlling the puck a little better,” forward Dustin Byfuglien told NHL.com. “That led into the power play with guys just settling down, confidence and just playing. That's something we needed to do. That's something we did very well tonight."

The Blackhawks special teams ranked just 16th in the NHL during the regular season, which was poor considering they were among the most offensively explosive attacks in the league. For the playoffs, Chicago’s power play is operating at 22.7 percent efficiency – going 17-for-75 with the man advantage. Philadelphia has had the best penalty kill this postseason, shutting down almost 86 percent of opponents’ power plays.

"There were some questions about our power play going in," Patrick Sharp told the media. "We've had lots of stretches where we were 0-for-6, 0-for-8 and managed to come through during the season, so we weren't too worried about it. We got five guys on both units who like to make plays, can move the puck and we scored a couple big goals today."

            Musical chairs

Peter Laviolette has a secret. And he’s not telling.

There is a cloud of mystery surrounding Philadelphia’s starting goaltender for Game 6 Wednesday. After starter Michael Leighton was pulled after allowing three goals on 13 shots in Game 5, there are some fans who would rather see Brian Boucher get the call.

"I don't like to put things out before I talk to my team and talk to my players," Laviolette told the CBC. "I want to make sure I do it at the right time and when I want to do it. I reserve the right to say when and where."

Leighton, who was brilliant against the Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens in the two rounds heading into the final has been shaky at times. He’s boasting a 4.01 goals against average and a .871 save percentage against the Blackhawks and has been pulled in two games this series.

Boucher didn’t fare much better when he stepped between the pipes in Game 1 or Game 5. He allowed one goal on 12 shots in relief in the opening contest of the final then was peppered for three goals on 14 shots in Sunday’s loss.

"Whatever is best for the team and whatever is going to give us the best chance to win one hockey game," Laviolette followed up.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers (-180, 9.5)

It’s no secret the Mariners have the most pathetic offense in the American League. Seattle has plated 14 fewer runs that the second-worst AL lineup and has hit a total of 33 home runs – the smallest mark in the majors.

One offseason acquisition the M’s didn’t think they would have to worry about from a hitting standpoint was second baseman Chone Figgins. But Figgy has greatly underachieved this season, hitting .220 going into this series, so manager Don Wakamatsu dropped him to the nine-hole in the order after he hit in the No. 2 spot for the first 56 games.

Wakamatsu said the move wasn’t pointed at the infielder but Figgins was not happy about it after Monday’s game.

"Obviously, it's me," Figgins said. "I've been getting on base. I've been hitting the ball pretty good. Obviously, it has something to do with me. I think I've about earned enough respect as a player…I should stay where I was hitting."

Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler has been in a bit of funk himself, registering only three hits in his last 22 at-bats with no home runs or RBIs. But Rangers’ manager Ron Washington said he will stick with Kinsler batting third in the order.

"As I said earlier, I'm not bouncing him around," Washington said. "Once he gets it going, he's dangerous. It just looks like, to me, that his rhythm is off. That's all. It happens.”

Five of the seven games between these AL West foes this season have played to the under, including Monday’s 4-2 Seattle victory. The wind will be blowing in from right field again in Arlington which should help limit the runs scored in this affair.

              Pick: Under

Florida Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies (-155, 6.5)

While Stephen Strasburg was the talk of Tuesday, another player made his major league debut.

Lauded Marlins rookie Mike Stanton hit seventh and started in right field in Tuesday's game against the Phillies. Stanton is the team’s most heralded phenom since Miguel Cabrera came up through the farm system in 2003.

At 20 years of age, Stanton pounded out 21 homers and 52 RBIs in 52 games with a .311 average at the Double-A level. For his minor league career, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-hander has averaged a home run every 11.7 at-bats.

"Michael is a guy with power who is starting to develop into a hitter," said Florida minor league hitting coordinator John Mallee.

Stanton is just young enough not to be intimidated by Roy Halladay's dominance on the mound. Look for the Fish to exact some revenge on Halladay after being humbled by a perfect game the last time they faced him.

              Pick: Marlins

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins (6-2, 2.10 ERA)

The Marlins ace has been nearly untouchable in recent outings, allowing only two runs over his last five trips to the mound. Johnson has posted three shutout efforts in that span and is coming off a one-run, seven-hit showing against the Milwaukee Brewers last Thursday. The last time he faced the Phillies, Johnson was out-pitched by Philadelphia ace Roy Halladay, who had to throw a perfect game to beat Florida’s right hander. These two studs face off again Wednesday.

Johan Santana, New York Mets (4-2, 2.76 ERA)

The Mets veteran arm has been stellar in recent starts and hasn’t allowed a run in the past 15 innings of work. But those shutout efforts haven’t equaled victories for Santana, who was dealt a no decision in each of his last two games. Going back to his last five starts, the tricky southpaw has given up only three earned runs over 36.2 innings, posting 22 strikeouts but just one win in that stretch.

              Slumping

Zach Duke, Pittsburgh Pirates (3-6, 5.43 ERA)

The Bucs' lefty hasn’t won a start since May 18 and has been roughed up since, serving three home runs in his most recent outing – a 6-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Duke has allowed 13 runs on 22 hits in his last two trips to the mound and might not snap this slump against the Nationals Wednesday. Duke is 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA in four career starts against Washington.

Kyle Davies, Kansas City Royals (4-4, 5.49 ERA)

Davies lasted just four innings in his last start, allowing six runs on eight hits while walking two batters. The outing before that, the Royals righty was knocked around for five runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. He is 4-5 with a 4.80 ERA in nine career starts versus Minnesota but will be taking the mound at brand new Target Field for the first time.

Charges are later dropped when the fan admits that he received $6,750 from the Dodgers for his injuries.

1961 - Ryne Duren sets an A.L. record with seven straight strikeouts against the Red Sox. He fans 11 batters in a 5-1 Angels win.

                  Daily Sports Roundup: June 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays play host to the Jays, aces battle on the mound in Philadelphia, and the Hawks and Flyers meet in Game 6 of the Cup final.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

A full American League slate for Wednesday has the Yankees at Baltimore, Boston at Cleveland, Seattle at Texas, Kansas City at Minnesota, Detroit at the White Sox, the Angels at Oakland, and Toronto at Tampa Bay. Shaun Marcum (5-2, 2.77 ERA) is scheduled to take on David Price (8-2, 2.29 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Marcum was tagged with the loss when he faced the Rays in his June 2 outing, getting knocked around for five runs (four earned) on 10 hits over his 8 1-3 innings of work. Lefthander Price grabbed the win in that June 2 contest in Toronto, holding the Blue Jays to a couple of unearned runs on nine hits over his eight innings pitched that day.

Meanwhile, the National League on Wednesday offers up Pittsburgh at Washington, San Diego at the Mets, San Francisco at Cincinnati, the Cubs at Milwaukee, Houston at Colorado, Atlanta at Arizona, St. Louis at the Dodgers, and Florida at Philadelphia. The Marlins are expected to send Josh Johnson (6-2, 2.10 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, with the Phillies set to counter with Roy Halladay (8-3, 2.03 ERA). Righthander Johnson was the hard-luck loser against Philadelphia in his May 29 start, giving up just one unearned run over his seven innings pitched. Righthander Halladay was the reason for Johnson's bad luck that day - he struck out 11 in a perfect game.

                  Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the Blackhawks will be looking to wrap up the Stanley Cup final on Wednesday night when they play on the road against the Flyers in Game 6 of the series. Chicago grabbed a 3-2 series advantage with a 7-4 home win in Game 5 of the set on Sunday night as a -180 favorite. Dustin Byfuglien led the way for the Hawks on Sunday with two goals and two assists, with Brent Seabrook, Dave Bolland, Kris Versteeg, Patrick Kane, and Patrick Sharp providing the other Chicago markers. Michael Leighton was chased from the Philly net after giving up three goals on 13 shots. The Flyers opened as -125 home favorites for Wednesday, with the total at 5.5.

                    Wednesday's six-pack

The toteboard for the prop bets on Stephen Strasburg's debut
-- Nationals opened at -$164, got bet up over -$200 on three of the five sportsbooks I saw; Strasburg himself was -$139 to get the win, which he did. +$247 for a no-decision was an interesting option.

-- Strikeouts: 5.5. Wow. He had six in first three IP, finished with 14.

-- Innings pitched: 6. There would have been unrest amongst the natives had Jim Riggleman not sent him back out for 7th inning, with only 81 pitches under his belt. He struck out last seven hitters he faced.

-- Pitches thrown: 90, Wound up tossing 94. I'll say this; he looked a lot stronger in the 7th inning than he did in the 1st inning.

-- Strasburg gave up home run (+169) to Delwyn Young. He was -$200 not to allow a homer.

-- Earned runs allowed: 2.5. He gave up two in an impressive display

                    ***************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: An unusually fun Tuesday in June......

                    13) Its not often an overhyped event lives up to the billing, but the game in Washington tonight went way over what was expected. Mr Strasburg was the real deal in his debut, striking out 14 with no walks. He fanned seven Pirates in a row to end an incredibly impressive first start.

                    12) My dad is 84; he went to lot of games at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn as a young guy. He saw young phenom Karl Spooner pitch for Brooklyn in 1954, so he was openly skeptical of all this hype. Freakin' Bob Costas mentioned Strasburg in the same sentence as Walter Johnson...........in the second inning!!!! By the end of the game, dad was quiet, which means he had a grudging, reluctant respect for the young pitcher.

                    11) This was Washington's third Tuesday night home game this season; the first two drew 15,037/17,098.......this game, overhyped as it was, got a crowd of 40,375. If you assume the average ticket price is $25, for the sake of math (Nationals actually have 23 different-priced tickets on single game purchases-- average price could be closer to $30), they made an extra $607,675 tonight, just at the box office.

Thats not counting parking, hats, tshirts, jerseys, beer/hot dogs or ratings on TV. Authentic jerseys sell for $275 a pop; how many #37 jerseys will they sell tomorrow? Strasburg earned his large salary Tuesday night.

                    10) Interesting to hear Jim Kaat/John Smoltz on MLB Network talking about pitch counts and innings limits and all that stuff. The pitch count debate has turned into a generational issue. Thought Washington coaches handled everything perfectly; 94 pitches wasn't too many or too few for a big, strong kid who was dominant in his last couple innings.

                    9) Ray Allen went 0-13, Kobe Bryant 10-29 in Lakers' 91-84 Game 3 win in Boston; Lakers were +14 in 27:51 that Odom played. As series goes on and teams get to know each others' moves by heart, will be interesting to see if Bryant keeps jacking up amazingly difficult shots. He did nothing in second half but jack up low percentage shots, which to over-simplify, is why he shot such a low percentage.

                    8) Michael Stanton went 3-5 with two infield hits in his much-heralded debut, as the Marlins lost a 10-8 softball game in Philly. Stanton batted 7th in the order in his first major league game, and scored two runs.

                    7) Jeff Niemann threw a 2-hit, 114-pitch shutout at the Blue Jays, the fourth time this season a guy has thrown a no-hitter, 1-hitter or 2-hitter while playing against my fantasy league team. Terrific.

                    6) Pelfrey-Richard hooked up in a super pitcher's duel; Ike Davis won it with a 11th-inning homer, as Mets won their ninth straight home game, a 2-1 nailbiter that had two close HR/non-HR calls, both called correctly.

                    5) Casey McGehee rolled a groundball single through the middle with two out in ninth inning, plating two runs as Brewers stunned Carlos Marmol and the Cubs 3-2. Marmol had drilled Rickey Weeks leading off the ninth for Milwaukee. Bitter defeat for Lou Piniella and the Wee Bears.

                    4) Someone explain to me how Jim Wolf can umpire a Cub-Brewer game when his brother Randy is on the Milwaukee team. I realize Wolf has lot of integrity, but why put him in that position? He shouldn't umpire if his brother is playing for either team. Thats common sense, isn't it?

                    3) Manny Ramirez snapped a scoreless tie with ground rule double in the 8th inning as Dodgers beat the Cardinal bullpen 1-0. Kuroda-Carpenter hooked up in yet another strong National League pitchers' duel.

                    2) Interesting contrast, as I look at Pirate-National box; Strasburg faced 24 hitters, struck out 14, walked none, got 18 swing/misses. Karstens faced 23 batters, didn't get a walk, strikeout or swing/miss, not one on the 72 pitches he threw. Dunn-Willingham touched him for homers in the 6th as Washington exploded to make Strasburg a winner, but Karstens hung in there too. Of the 65 batters in the entire game, only one walked.

                    1) There's a movie mogul named David Geffen who is worth $4.6B; he would like to own the Clippers, and then sign Lebron James. We'll see if Donald Sterling will sell to him. Tomorrow, I'm going to have the first of a two-part list of things I would do if I was worth $4.6B. Other than smile a lot, of course. Thats billion, by the way, with a B.
