  • Maxing out a MLB prop bet

I had a feeling the arrival of S Strasburg would open up the prop bets at Nevada casinos and online, and it has.

Prop bets have gotten a bad rap as being unpredictable sucker bets, thanks to HEADS or TAILS at the Super Bowl, or will Phil Mickelson be more strokes under on Sunday than goals scored in the Angola/Hungary match.

But sometimes prop bets are gifts, and this is also the reason that many casinos drastically reduce the max bet that can be made on such wagers. In this case, when you love the bet, you play it at max at as many different casinos as many different times as you can.

This morning was one of those finds:

TOTAL HITS STEPHEN STRASBURG WILL ALLOW:
    OVER/UNDER 4------ OVER +100, UNDER -130

Listen, I'm sure this kid is going to be great, probably be a Cy Young contender for the next 15 years, but come on!

Here is a list of some of the top 10 pitchers in the National League, and how many hits they allowed when facing the Pirates this season.

April 10 Dan Haren 9 hits allowed
April 13 Matt Cain 6 hits allowed
April 23 Roy Oswalt 4 hits allowed
May 9 Adam Wainwright 5 hits allowed
May 18 Roy Halladay 9 hits allowed
June 6 Tim Lincecum 6 hits allowed

The hype surrounding this guy is incredible, but he is NOT going to step out of the minor leagues putting up better numbers than Halladay and Lincecum. The Pirates have a few hitters, and they will collect their hits. Even with a limited pitch count, the Pirates are going to get their hits. Less than 4 here would be utterly improbable, and to get even odds is an absolute gift. Strasburg is known for his excellent control (hell, the O/U on how many walks he will issue is only 1.5) so if they get to him, it is going to be by hitting him.

Online I have also found this wager available at VIP and nine.com, as well as sportsbook.com. In other words, it is pretty commonly available.

    I absolutely love this play.
HITS ALLOWED BY STRASBURG OVER 4 +100

    Good luck.

That's ridiculous. He would have to only give up 3 hits to lose.

              Damn, I can't find it at Sportsbook.com

I found totals pitches, will he allow a run or a HR, I've seen will he be the winning pitcher. Nothing on hits allowed though?

Wayne, JoshuaB, I don't see it now either. Early this morning, it was there. It is still up at nine.com, Vip.com and betgameday, but it has moved to -110.

I apologize if I have thrown out a play that nobody can get their hands on.

My buddy just maxed this for me at 3 different Vegas books as well, so please, root like hell for the kid, but for old TT's sake, root for a few Pirates grounders to find the outfield as well. JimmytheGreek, you aren't the only one with a huge play brewing tonight.
                  Good luck all.

Here is your problem with your bet,Strasburg is only going 5 -6 innings the most and about 80-85 pitches you think those other pitchers came out early.

                      Gizmo,

                      1. If dude throws 85 pitches in 5 innings, I find it hard to imagine that he is pitching a 2 hitter at that point. Typically guys who throw 85 pitches in 5 innings have had 2-3 innings of pitching with runners on base.

                      2. I understand exactly what you are saying, as Lincecum, Halladay, Wainwright, etc all threw more than 95 pitches in the starts I mentioned, but the fact is that, on average, those guys gave up a combined 1 hit per inning to the Pirates. And those guys are HOF caliber pitchers with years of experience.

                      3. This is his ML debut, and the frenzy behind it is basically unprecedented. It's easy to say, the kid is a whiz, the Pirates are terrible, the line is -230, this is going to be a 3 hit shutout, but when it takes a 3 hitter from a kid who has never thrown a pitch in the majors to cost me a wad of money, I can tell you I will still say this was a smart play even I wind up a loser.

Yeah, he looked awesome. Hell of a performance. He only had one bad inning. It was quite a tease though, as he had given up 4 hits at the 2 2/3 IP mark. Oh well, I can't complain with as badly as he baffled the Bucs.
