    Daily Sports Roundup: June 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox host the Rangers, the Phillies and Braves clash in an NL East battle in Atlanta, and the lowly Lynx battle with the Mercury.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has Cleveland at Detroit, Baltimore at the Yankees, Tampa Bay at Toronto, Oakland at Boston, the Angels at Kansas City, Minnesota at Seattle, and Texas at the White Sox. The Rangers are slated to send Rich Harden (2-1, 5.14 ERA) to the mound for Tuesday's game, while the White Sox counter with Mark Buehrle (3-5, 4.38 ERA). Righthander Harden has picked up a no-decision in each of his last four starts, but he beat the White Sox back on April 28 (three runs over six innings). Lefthander Buehrle was ejected from his last start for protesting a balk call; he fell to Texas back on April 27 (four runs over seven innings).

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Milwaukee at Florida, Washington at Houston, Cincinnati at St. Louis, the Mets at San Diego, Arizona at the Dodgers, Colorado at San Francisco, and Philadelphia at Atlanta. Cole Hamels (5-3, 3.82 ERA) is expected to take on Tim Hudson (5-1, 2.24 ERA) in that Phillies/Braves matchup. Lefthander Hamels lost to the Mets last time out (two earned runs over 6 1-3 innings), but he beat the Braves May 9 (three runs over five innings). Righthander Hudson was tagged with a loss by the Phillies when he faced them back on April 21 despite surrendering just two earned runs on six hits in six innings pitched.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Atlanta at Seattle and Phoenix at Minnesota. The Lynx sit in the league basement heading into the second month of the season, going 1-5 straight-up and 2-4 against-the-spread through six games with star guard Seimone Augustus still on the sidelines. Minnesota fell 73-58 to Chicago in their last game on Saturday, with Lindsay Whalen scoring 11 points for the Lynx in that loss. The Mercury (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) were beaten 96-93 by Atlanta in their last game on Friday, with Angel McCoughtry scoring 28 points that day.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Atlanta Dream at Seattle Storm – This total has moved from an opener of 163 to as low as 160.5 in some markets.

Orioles at Yankees – Shops have dropped the total in this game to 10 after opening at 10.5.

Phillies at Braves – The home team opened as -150 favorites but that moneyline can be found as low as -135 in some markets.

Diamondbacks at Dodgers – Most books have moved the total in this game to 8 after opening at 8.5.

      Weather to watch
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Orioles at Yankees – The forecast calls for wind to blow in from right field at 15 mph. A 40-70 percent chance of precipitation is also expected.

Angels at Royals – An 16 mph wind is projected to blow out to right field.

Brewers at Marlins – A 50 percent chance of rain is in the forecast.

Athletics at Red Sox – The National Weather Service calls for a 16 mph wind to blow out to right field. There is also a 60-80 percent chance of precipitation during the game.

Phillies at Braves – A 40 percent chance of rain is called for.

      Who’s hot

The Atlanta Dream are a perfect 6-0 SU and ATS during the 2010 WNBA season.

The Braves have won six straight and are 8-2 during a 10-game stretch.

Phoenix (WNBA) has played to three consecutive OVERS.

      Who’s not

Minnesota (WNBA) has dropped five in a row and is 1-4 ATS during the losing streak.

The D-Backs had lost seven straight going into Monday’s game.

Texas is mired in a four-game slide.

      Key Stat

27-4 – Braves season record when scoring four runs or more. Atlanta busted out with nine runs Monday and have hung at least four runs on the scoreboard in nine of its last 10 games. The team is 20-0 when they score five or more runs.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter left Monday's game against the Cleveland Indians with tightness in his hamstring. The extent of the injury is unknown so bettors should monitor his status going into Tuesday. Jeter was replaced by Ramiro Pena in the field.

      Notable quotables

"You tell him you go to Triple-A or that's it, you are finished."

"At some point you have to cut bait," he said. "You owe him a lot of money, but for what?"

-- Two anonymous Mets players said about pitcher Oliver Perez who was recently demoted to the bullpen but still stands to make $20 million on the three-year contract he signed before the 2009 season.

      Tips and notes

      - Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has tinkered with his lineup that is struggling to score runs. Jayson Werth was dropped out of the order Friday and on Monday Ross Gload was hitting leadoff, moving Shane Victorino to the No. 5 spot. Friday’s new lineup produced three runs and a win but the Phils have scored a total of four runs in three games since. The team hasn’t plated more than three runs in a game since May 21 and the UNDER is a scorching 8-2 in that stretch. Before bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was caught with binoculars and accused of stealing signs the Phillies were scoring 5.44 runs per game, but they are averaging almost two runs fewer since.

      - Diamondbacks ace Dan Haren usually has his best stuff in the first half of the season and if that trend continues things don’t look good for the righty in 2010. Haren is still getting hitters to strikeout but is giving up the longball at an alarming rate. He has served up an MLB-leading 16 homers and is now 9-9 with a 5.12 ERA in 25 starts dating back to last year. The Dodgers are small, -125 favorites at home against Haren and Arizona Tuesday.

      - Getting trendy here but these numbers were too good to pass up. Rich Harden holds a 40-0 career record when his team supplies four runs of support or more. His team’s win/loss record in that situation is 48-5. Texas has scored a minimum of four runs in its last four games against the White Sox. Also, because of a couple of off-days for the Rangers in the last week Harden will be pitching on six days rest and the righty is 10-5 with a 2.66 ERA in 28 career starts in that scenario. The Rangers are +110 dogs in Chicago Tuesday.

        Tuesday's six-pack

-- Phillies look awful; they lost 9-3 in Atlanta Monday, now trail the Braves by half-game in NL East.

-- Ubaldo Jimenez threw a 129-pitch shutout at San Francisco and now has an ERA of 0.78. They better take good care of his right arm..

-- Stephen Strasburg's first major league start will be June 8 against the Pirates; good marketing move by the contending Nationals-- they'll get a sellout on a Tuesday against the downtrodden Buccos.

-- Brewers led 4-0 in 6th inning at Florida....and still lost by eight runs. Hard to imagine Ken Macha lasting much longer in Milwaukee.

-- Arizona State is #1 seed in NCAA baseball tournament; last time the #1 seed won the tournament was Miami in 1999. ACC, Pac-10 and SEC all have eight teams in the 64-team tournament.

-- Garrett Wittels takes his 54-game hitting streak against Texas A&M in NCAA tournament Friday; FIU is the Sun Belt Conference champ.

        ****************************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Taking a look at teams in the AL......

        14) Orioles-- Last in AL in runs scored; they're scored 96 runs less than the Bluejays, despite having a higher OB%- O's are 6-22 on the road, and adding anything else would just be piling on. It hasn't been good.

        13) Indians-- Masterson was gritty in Bronx Sunday, but centerpiece of the Victor Martinez trade is 1-12, 5.21 in 20 starts for Cleveland, giving up 126 hits, 62 walks in 111 IP. Tough times on Lake Erie.

        12) Mariners-- I've got nothing good to say about Seattle, so I'll point out that Ubaldo Jimenez is 10-1, 0.78 for Colorado, but why in the name of Nolan Ryan are the Rockies letting him throw 129 pitches in May game? They'll need him healthy, fresh in September if they're going to contend.

        11) Royals-- Runs per game in baseball, as of Monday morning, is lowest its been since 1992. Draw your own conclusions. On bright side, Royals have 2nd-best batting average in major leagues. Too bad batting average is the most overrated statistic in baseball.

        10) White Sox-- Jake Peavy is 4-4, 6.23 in 11 starts for the Pale Hose, and yes I'm bitter that he's so bad I can't use him on my fantasy team. White Sox traded four guys to get him, one of whom is Clayton Richard, who is 4-3, 3.00 in ten starts for San Diego. %&#$(@)%&

        9) Angels-- Kendry Morales broke his leg jumping on home plate after a walk-off HR; despite their dismal start, they're still contending in a weak division. Should they add payroll to replace Morales, or add a pitcher? At least Kendrick didn't get hurt after his walkoff tater Sunday.

        8) Rangers-- Nelson Cruz has knocked in 27.9% of baserunners, a great percentage, but he's on DL for second time this year. Ironic that they've struggled with young 1Bs Davis/Smoak, when worst trade they've made in years was dealing Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young for reliever Otsuka and washed-up Adam Eaton. Complete debacle.

        7) Tigers-- How are four teams given Memorial Day off? The schedule can't possibly be that difficult to do. Why not play on Monday and take Tuesday off? Cabrera is having a monster year, by the way; 14 HRs, 48 RBI and a 1.075 OPS. Getting Austin Jackson was also a positive.

        6) A's-- Miller Huggins, John McGraw or Sparky Anderson wouldn't be doing as good a job managing this gritty team as Bob Geren has done in the first 52 games this season. It helps when your pitching is deep, but they didn't have Anderson or Suzuki for extended time and their leadoff hitter, Coco Crisp, has managed to suit up for two games this season.

        5) Red Sox-- Kevin Youkilis has a .445 OB%. Mike Lowell is rumored to be headed to Anaheim, where hopefully he'll play first and not third since Maicer Izturis plays for the Armadillos, and I need him to get ABs. Ortiz seems like a good guy, and faith Francona has shown in him is refreshing, so Big Papi's resurgence is cool. Just take it easy on the A's this week.

        4) Blue Jays-- I know Stanley Cup finals were on, but crowd of 11,335 for big game against first place Rays is a red flag for baseball in Toronto. Jays have a nice team; they deserve better support than that. Brandon Morrow is 4-1, 3.90 at home, 0-3, 8.33 on the road.

        3) Twins-- ESPN.com reports that 63 of last 98 teams that were in first place on Memorial Day made the playoffs (65.6%). Apparently, Twins crosstrain their minor leaguers, stressing versatility. This helps out when players like Cuddyer are asked to play multiple position in big leagues.

        2) Bronx-- 1998 was last time the six division leaders on Memorial Day all won their division title. Lance Zawadski of the Padres was coached in high school baseball by Ron Darling's dad. Zawadski knocked in Padres' 18th run of the night Monday, then pointed to the sky. Yikes.

        1) Rays-- Only 15-12 at home, but 19-6 on road. For a good team, they go thru early innings without hitting at all in an awful lot of games. Last time Mets gave up as many runs as they did last night? 2004, when the Expos scored 19 against them, with Todd Zeile pitching the last inning.

Debating the NBA Finals: Who you got?

An NBA Finals pitting arch rivals Boston and Los Angeles against each other was bound to anger up the blood. But we’re not about allegiances; we’re about backing the winner.

Larry Josephson explains why the luck will be on the Irish’s side while Ashton Grewal makes the case for the NBA title going to Tinseltown for the second straight year.

Why the Celtics - especially at +162 – are the right team to back:

          Who guards Rajon Rondo?

A younger Derek Fisher was OK in 2008, but that won’t work this time around. Kobe Bryant? Fine, but that will likely cost L.A. on the offensive end and allow Ray Allen to run Fisher off backscreens all night. Rondo is just a freaky point guard – maybe not the best in the league but definitely the most unique.

He’s the biggest threat to Showtime 2.0 – a player fast and elusive enough to force the Lakers backcourt to work on defense, and smart and quick enough to prevent penetration and drop-offs to the Lakers' bigs. He’s the Finals MVP.

Kobe Bryant can and will be stopped – kind of, maybe, OK not completely

In case you missed it, the Celtics can play some defense. More than Oklahoma City, more than Utah and certainly more than Phoenix. It’s a defense that isn’t played in the Western Conference. By the time Game 1 tips off on Thursday, assistant coach Tom Thibodeau will have had nearly a full week to scheme for Bryant. The Celtics are at their best when they need to stop one player (Wade, James, Howard).

The ground is beginning to rumble in Falls Church, Va.

That’s where Red Auerbach is buried. Auerbach hated the Lakers almost as much as they hated him, and he had particular animus for Phil Jackson, whom he considered a phony coach who rode the coattails of superstars to NBA titles.

Auerbach loved veterans and this team bears a striking resemblance to the 1969 Celtics, who were supposedly washed up but had enough in the tank to beat the Lakers in the Finals.

Auerbach would hate Pau Gasol, respect Derek Fisher and stay awake at night figuring out ways to slow down Bryant. The 2009-10 Celts are Auerbach’s type of team – tough and gritty – and he would sell his children into slavery to wipe the smugness off Jackson’s face.

Why the Lakers at -180 is a gift and you’ll never forgive yourself if you don’t take it now:

Pau Gasol is the most talented post-up player since Hakeem Olajuwon.

Because of his goofy looks, Gasol will never be confused with a Hollywood hulk. But just like Tom Cruise, the Lakers' big man has all the right moves. The Spaniard can face up and shoot with touch from 18 feet, or he can drive past slower defenders (that’s you KG) and finish at the rim.

He’s more than comfortable in the low block feeding opponents baby hooks, baseline spins and turnaround J’s. And he’s most dangerous in the high post, where he showcases his passing skills and feeds the rock to cutting teammates.

Critics will argue he was soft in the 2008 Finals but those same people forget that he was still getting familiar with his new mates. Playing with Kobe Bryant isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do. Gasol has two and a half years under his belt with the Lakers and he knows his role.

The Lakers can play defense too

Don’t go into this series thinking it’s going to be L.A.’s offense against Boston’s defense. This isn’t like a Super Bowl matchup between the Saints and the Ravens.

The Lakers finished the regular season with the fifth-best defensive field goal percentage (44.6) and they’ve improved that number to 43.7 in the postseason. Boston plays great defense but the Lakers are no slouches.

          Because Kobe says so

Of all the similarities between Kobe and Michael Jordan, the strongest has to be competitiveness. The Black Mamba hates to lose especially against a team led by a guy who needs four teammates to carry him off the court.

Boston does a better job than any other team at defending him, but Kobe doesn’t need to score 30 points every night. He can expose cheating defenses with his passing like he did against the Suns.

Kobe can smell blood and he wants more than anything to get closer to Jordan’s most recognized feat – six championship rings.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Chicago White Sox (-125, 9)

The daunting Rangers’ offense has fallen into a slumber and losing slugger Nelson Cruz to the disabled list isn’t going to help.

Texas has dropped four straight games and scored an average of 2.25 runs per game during the losing streak – never eclipsing a three-run total. The Rangers are just 8-15 away from Arlington.

"We just haven't really clicked on all cylinders yet," second baseman Ian Kinsler said. "We're getting good pitching but we're not scoring runs. When we're scoring runs we're not pitching well. We just need to get both those things on the same page and I think we'll start rolling."

Up until June 28, Chicago will play all but six games this month at Cingular Field where the team has gotten off to an 11-13 start.

"You want to go home and play good," Ozzie Guillen said. "Now we have a stretch where we're going to go home for a while, and hopefully we take advantage of that, take pride in showing (the fans) where we are."

Look for Chicago to get back on track in the confines of their home ballpark behind southpaw Mark Buehrle who will make his first start since being ejected after two balks last week. Buehrle no-hit this same Rangers squad at home in 2007.

            Pick: White Sox

Milwaukee Brewers at Florida Marlins (-155, 9)

The Marlins may have figured something out on Memorial Day.

After getting shutdown by Roy Halladay’s perfect outing Saturday and then clinging onto a 1-0 victory against the Phillies Sunday, Florida exploded for 13 runs against Milwaukee on Monday.

Cody Ross hit a three-run bomb and Cameron Maybin raced around the bags for an inside-the-park two-run homer during the Marlins’ seven-run sixth inning.

"For the first five innings, it looked like the same old team that's been playing the last few days. And then all of a sudden, we score seven," Ross said. "That's what makes our game so beautiful. You can be down and out, and the next thing you know, you feel like you're on top of the world and nobody can get you out.”

The Marlins have won two straight and need to get on a hot streak in order to keep up with the pace-setting Braves and Phillies atop the NL East.

Brewers starting pitcher Dave Bush (1-5, 5.05 ERA) gave up seven earned runs in 0.1 innings before his last start and has a career 6.65 ERA versus the Fish.

            Pick: Marlins

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Johnny Cueto (5-1, 3.25 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

The Reds righty has been simply magic during the club's recent hot streak. Cueto has won four straight starts and hasn’t tasted defeat since April 24. He’s allowed just three runs in his last four outings, most recently going six innings, allowing just three hits, in an 8-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Even more impressive is the fact that Cueto is missing his slider due to a blister on his right hand. He is expected to be back at full strength against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday.

Nick Blackburn (6-1, 4.28 ERA), Minnesota Twins

The Twins right-hander has won five starts in a row heading into Tuesday. Blackburn hasn’t lost since April 11 and is coming off a strong showing against the dangerous New York Yankees lineup, allowing just two runs through seven innings in an 8-2 victory last Thursday. Not only is Blackburn getting the job done but Minnesota’s lineup is backing him up, scoring 57 runs over his nine starts this season – the most for any pitcher in the majors.

              Slumping

Brian Matusz (2-5, 5.76 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

Matusz’s last win came way back on April 18 against the Oakland A’s. Since then, the lefty has gone 0-5 in his last seven starts and is coming off a rough couple outings heading into Tuesday’s date with the Yankees. Matusz lasted just over two innings, giving up seven runs on May 20, then served up six runs in five innings against Oakland last Wednesday. He did, however, settle down in that outing and could be turning things around.

Wade LeBlanc (2-3, 3.71 ERA), San Diego Padres

LeBlanc’s command has been off and on since joining the Big League club in 2010. In his last start, the left-hander gave up four runs including two home runs on nine hits in just over five innings of work. The start before that, he was rocked for eight runs in just three innings, serving up two dingers. He hasn’t won since an eight-hit shutout on April 29 and had a 5.81 ERA in May, despite starting the month strong.

"I think more than anything it was the lack of not getting the ball in good spots," Padres manager Bud Black told MLB.com following LeBlanc’s latest outing. "Today I saw the ball elevated more than I have all year. There was not enough quality strikes down in the strike zone."

                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 1 in Baseball History...

1917 - Hank Gowdy is the first major-league player to enlist during World War I when he signs up in the Ohio National Guard. He will play until he reports for duty July 15.

1918 - Losing 5-4 against the Yankees, the White Sox load the bases in the ninth with no outs. Chick Gandil lines a shot to third baseman Frank Baker, who turns it into a game-ending triple play.

1925 - Lou Gehrig begins a consecutive-game streak that will surpass Everett Scott's mark by pinch-hitting for Pee Wee Wanninger, the shortstop who replaced Scott in the Yankees lineup. The next day, first baseman Wally Pipp shows up with a headache, and Gehrig takes over.

1941 - Mel Ott's two-run homer, the 400th of his career and his 1,499th and 1,500th RBI, gives the Giants a 3-2 win over the Reds.

1943 - Rip Sewell of the Pirates throws his dew-drop ball in a game. Sewell loops the ball 18 to 20 feet high on its way to the strike zone. Later it is called a blooper or eephus ball. The pitch is more than a gag, and Sewell is on his way to a 20-win season.

1959 - Two-time champ Monterrey, Mexico is barred from 1959 Little League competition for its failure to comply with the rule that specifies using only players from a predetermined geographical area.

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Mercury at Minnesota Lynx (+4.5, 182.5)

The Lynx will bring a knife to a gun fight when they welcome the defending WNBA champs to the Target Center Tuesday night.

Minnesota’s offense is sputtering to start the season, averaging just over 75 points on 38.8 percent shooting per game. That’s quite a contrast to the Mercury who fire at 42 percent from the floor and rank first in the WNBA in scoring with 92.5 points per game.

The Lynx are coming off another disappointing showing, losing 73-58 to the Chicago Sky this weekend. They shot just over 32 percent from the field as well as made just 18 of their 32 free throws.

"We put ourselves in a position to win the game defensively, but it's hard to win games when you shoot 30 percent," guard Lindsay Whalen told reports. "Now, we are just going to keep working hard, staying in the gym getting extra shots and having confidence that the shots will fall."

Minnesota doesn’t have much time to make those adjustments before Tuesday. Basketball bettors can expect a dominating performance from Phoenix on the road.

                    Pick: Phoenix

Atlanta Dream at Seattle Storm (-3, 161)

Total bettors riding the Seattle offense hit a speed bump Sunday when the Storm played under for the first time this season, beating the San Antonio Silver Stars 84-56, but falling under the 150-point total.

Those same total backers should be able to climb back into the black Tuesday, when Seattle hosts the equally explosive Atlanta Dream. Atlanta ranks second in the WNBA in scoring, pouring in almost 87 points per night.

The Dream boast a 3-3 over/under mark but have topped the total in their last two games heading into Tuesday. They rolled the Los Angeles Sparks, 101-82, Sunday, playing over the 162-point number.

"Our defense got us easy transition points," Angel McCoughtry told the media following Sunday’s win. "That got us excited. Then we just scored at will."

                    Pick: Over 161

Capping the calendar: June's best MLB pitchers

If it’s June, school is out. And so too will be the NBA (we think). It’s also the time of the season when MLB pitchers look to ace exams in hopes of keeping their teams in the pennant chase. To get a better feel on what to expect, let’s examine their results from exams in the past.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in June team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts. To qualify, pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts with at least one start each June over the last three years.

                          GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Floyd, Gavin (Chicago White Sox) • 10-2
Haren, Dan (Arizona Diamondbacks) • 13-4
Hernandex, Felix (Seattle Mariners) • 12-2
Kazmir, Scott (Los Angeles Angels) • 8-4
Lackey, John (Boston Red Sox) • 11-4
Nolasco, Ricky (Florida Marlins) • 8-2
Pettitte, Andy (New York Yankees) • 11-5
Wakefield, Tim (Boston Red Sox) • 11-5
Zambrano, Carlos (Chicago Cubs) • 14-3

                          BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Arroyo, Bronson (Cincinnati Reds) • 4-13
Blanton, Joe (Philadelphia Phillies) • 5-12
Garland, Jon (San Diego Padres) • 5-11
Hernandez, Livan (Washington Nationals) • 6-12
Hudson, Tim (Atlanta Braves) • 4-8
