Memorial Day Baseball Betting –Speedy Version

For many people today it is cookouts, time to spend with family and friends or watch a “Criminal Minds” marathon. While participating in these or other activities the baseball sports better still wants to get his fill of action, just with a little more urgency, with having other fun things to participate in.

Let’s not waste any more time and get to it.

At 1:05 Eastern the two best teams in the NL East do battle, Philadelphia (28-21) at Atlanta (28-22). The Phillies have won 20 of last 26 Monday assignments and send Joe Blanton (1-5, 5.63 ERA) to the mound. Though everything counts, the Braves Tommy Hanson (4-3, 4.06) has 2.89 ERA this year if you subtract May 20 dud (eight runs in just 1 2/3 innings) against Cincinnati. Hanson and Atlanta are 7-2 at home facing teams with winning records; however the Phils have taken 15 of last 21 in Hotlanta.

At 1:35 Eastern on WGN the Chicago Cubs (24-27) begin a road trip in Pittsburgh (20-31). The Cubs begin their nine game excursion having a bad taste in the mouth courtesy of the Pirates, who have won five of six against Chicago in 2010 and are 7-1 dating back to last season. The Cubs have played down to or below their level of competition with 2-8 record against losing teams. Pittsburgh gladly returns home where they are 8-3 after road trip of a week or more. Seven of the previous 10 meetings have gone UNDER the total in the Steel City.

At 4:15 Eastern, the city with the Arch hosts the surprise team of the NL Central, Cincinnati (31-20). The Reds have played the fewest road games of any squad in the National League (21) and taken advantage of it with a sensational home record of 19-10. Cincy will be the first team to face St. Louis rookie Jaime Garcia (4-2, 1.14) a second time and is 8-3 against left-handed pitchers. The Reds are 7-1 when Bronson Arroyo (5-2, 4.30) pitches a series opener, yet are 2-6 if the right-hander faces a team above .500. The Cardinals (29-22) have relished playing the Reds at home, with 37-15 record and are perfect 12-0 on Monday’s.

At 7:07 Eastern, Tampa Bay (34-17) returns to the road with not only the best record in baseball, but with remarkable 19-5 mark as the visiting team. Matt Garza (5-3, 2.97) lacked his usually excellent fastball control in his last start, a loss to Boston and amazingly he and the Rays are 2-12 on the road against clubs like Toronto (30-22) with a positive record. At a sluggish start (6-10), the Blue Jays have won eight of nine at the Rogers Centre and are 10-1 seeing right handed hurlers in home whites. Watch the total of this matchup with these AL East teams a combined 7-3 UNDER north of the border and Garza 7-1 UNDER vs. Toronto. Check Sportsbook.com for the up to the minute numbers.

On last thing, take a moment from sports betting to remember the real reason for Memorial Day, to honor those that have died serving our country to protect our freedom.

            Monday Tips

The Memorial Day baseball card gives bettors opportunities all day and all night to cash tickets. Nine games will be played under the sun, including a showdown of aces in San Francisco. We'll start at Turner Field with the battle between NL East rivals Atlanta and Philadelphia.

Phillies at Braves - 1:05 PM EST

Philadelphia's offense hasn't necessarily taken off since getting blanked three times at New York, but Roy Halladay's perfect game on Saturday may turn things around for this struggling Phillies team. The reigning NL Champs have beaten the Braves four of six times at the two clubs hook up for the third series of the season.

The Phillies got several solid pitching performances at Florida, as Joe Blanton (1-3, 5.62 ERA) looks to improve on his recent struggles. Blanton allowed five earned runs in five innings of a 5-0 loss at the Mets his last time out, the second time he has given up five runs in a road defeat. In his previous start against Atlanta, Blanton was on the short end of a 4-1 loss, yielding five hits and three earned runs in six innings of work.

Tommy Hanson (4-3, 4.06 ERA) bounced back from two awful outings in a 7-3 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday. The righty surrendered 13 earned runs against Arizona and Cincinnati before delivering six innings of four-hit ball versus the Fish. The 'over' has turned into a fantastic play when Hanson takes the mound, hitting in five straight starts. Hanson lasted 4.2 innings the last time he saw the Phillies, as he was bailed out by a Nate McLouth walk-off homer in a 4-3 victory back on April 20.

Five of the six meetings in this series have finished 'under' the total, including all three at Citizens Bank Park earlier this month. Seven of the last eight games overall for the Phillies have easily hit the 'under,' while the Braves are 7-1 in home series openers this season.

Indians at Yankees - 1:05 PM EST

Following Saturday's wild 13-11 win by Cleveland, the Yanks rallied back for a victory on Sunday. The Indians send out surprising rookie Mitch Talbot to oppose veteran lefty Andy Pettitte in the series finale.

Talbot (6-3, 3.73 ERA) has been the only consistent pitcher to take the mound for the Tribe, while picking up underdog victories at the Angels, Twins, and Orioles. The righty is coming off a quality start in a 7-3 triumph over the White Sox, allowing six hits and two earned runs in seven innings. Five of Talbot's last six starts have resulted in 'overs,' as the Indians have tallied at least seven runs in four of those games.

The Yankees have been automatic when Pettitte (6-1, 2.62 ERA) is slated to start. New York is 8-1 in the southpaw's nine outings, coming off a road victory at Minnesota his last time out. The Bombers are 5-0 in his day starts, as Pettitte owns a 1.08 ERA in matinee action. Pettitte wasn't overly impressive in his last start against Cleveland nearly a year ago to the day. The lefty scattered six hits and one run in five innings while walking five, but the Yanks came out on top, 3-1 at Progressive Field.

The Indians are 3-8 in their last 11 series finales, while going 'over' the total in nine of their previous 11 games. The Yankees are 5-2 off consecutive losses this season, with five of those games finishing 'under' the total.

Athletics at Tigers - 1:05 PM EST

Detroit finally broke through in this series on Sunday after dropping the first two games to Oakland. Max Scherzer pitched extremely well in his first start since being recalled from the minors, striking out 14 in 5.2 innings, while allowing just two hits. In fact, it was the first time in five meetings this season that the home team has come out on top.

The Tigers turn to their ace with Justin Verlander (5-3, 3.74 ERA) toeing the rubber. The right-hander wasn't sharp in his last outing, allowing five earned runs and two homers at Seattle in a 5-3 setback. Prior to that start on Detroit's West Coast trip, Verlander silenced the A's bats in a complete-game, four-hitter at Oakland Coliseum. The Tigers are a perfect 5-0 in Verlander's five day starts this season, while tossing at least 117 pitches in each of his last eight outings.

Trevor Cahill (3-2, 3.31 ERA) has been a nice addition to the Oakland rotation, replacing the injured Brett Anderson (Anderson has since returned). Cahill is coming off consecutive wins over the Giants and Orioles, giving up eight hits and two runs in 12 innings. The righty faced the Tigers twice last season and was on both ends of the ledger each time. Cahill was knocked around at Comerica Park in an 11-7 setback, but beat Detroit at home with a seven-inning, five-hit performance last August.

The Tigers are 13-1 since the start of last season when Verlander takes the mound after Detroit lost his previous start. Oakland is 1-3 this season following a game in which it allowed at least ten runs, while going 4-10 on the road against right-handed starting pitchers.

Rockies at Giants - 4:05 PM EST

Two of the bright young aces in the game square off by the Bay as San Francisco and Colorado hook up. The reigning NL Cy Young Award Tim Lincecum faces off against the top pitcher in the NL this season, Ubaldo Jimenez.

Both teams are coming off home divisional series, as the Giants took two of three from the Rockies earlier this month. Lincecum (5-1, 3.00 ERA) has not fared well recently, allowing 11 earned runs in his last two starts, both losses to Arizona and Washington. That amount of runs equals the number Lincecum gave up in his first eight starts of the season combined. The 'over' has been a profitable play when the San Francisco ace takes the mound, hitting in seven of ten outings. Lincecum didn't face the Rockies in the last series, as he went 2-1 with three quality starts against Colorado in 2009.

Jimenez (9-1, 0.88 ERA) has been dynamite this entire season, giving up one earned run or less in eight of his ten starts. The 'under' has hit in four of his five day outings, and four of his six starts on the highway. Like Lincecum, Jimenez did not start in Colorado's last venture to AT&T Park. The Rockies went 2-3 in Jimenez's five starts against the Giants last season, while going 1-4 in his previous five trips to San Francisco.

The Rockies have dropped 12 of their past 14 series openers, including a 2-6 road mark. The Giants are rolling at home, picking up wins in seven of their past eight at AT&T Park.

Stanley Cup Final - Game 2

If the NHL was wishing for an exciting start to the Stanley Cup Final, then they got their wish.

Chicago was able to survive a marathon as a $2.00 home favorite for a 6-5 win over the Flyers to draw first blood in the championship round. To give you an idea of how wild the scoring was in this contest, the closing total of 5 ½ was eclipsed in the first 23 minutes of play.

The easy way of describing Saturday night’s game was that it was glorified pond hockey. That’s a fair assessment since there really wasn’t a solid flow to action at all. But pond hockey normally has little to no defensive work, which was not the case from where I’m sitting.

There was plenty of hitting going on with Philadelphia taking a 40-37 advantage in that spot. And both sides were held to a manageable 32 shots on goal. Plus, the Blackhawks’ top line of Dustin Byfuglien, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews combined for minus-9 with no points on the stat sheet. Same can be said about Simon Gagne, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, who were are standing at minus-5. And we can’t forget that the Flyers didn’t allow a single power play to Chicago.

The breakdowns came when the third or fourth lines were out on the ice. Blair Betts picked up a goal for Philly, while Dave Bolland found the back of the net for the Blackhawks. While we can give hell to the lower defenders on each club, the real issue is the nerves of the men between the pipes.

Chicago’s Antti Niemi was able to stop 27 of the 32 shots he saw from the Flyers. This was his worst effort on the ice since giving up three goals to the Canucks on May 9 in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinal.

Michael Leighton had successfully handled the goaltending duties in a Game 7 in the East Semis and some hostile territory at the Bell Centre in the previous round. But Montreal and Boston didn’t have the same quality of offense like Chicago does. The spectre of the Blackhawks’ attack and the nerves of his first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final no doubt came into play. Look no further than the fact he gave up five goals on 20 shots in just 35 minutes of work.

Peter Laviolette decided after that fifth goal to pull Leighton in favor of Brian Boucher. It was a somewhat controversial call to make since Philadelphia was only down 5-4 at that time. Boucher played pretty well in relief, stopping 11 of 12 SOG.

While Niemi is in no danger of losing his starting gig for Chicago for Game 2, the same can’t be said of Leighton now. Leighton has a 7-10-8 record with a 2.41 goals against average during his career at the United Center. Boucher, however, is 5-2-2 in nine starts against the Blackhawks. But he is 4-6-2 when playing at the “Madhouse on Madison.”

Regardless of who is playing backstop for Philadelphia, they’ll be against the wall at the betting shops. Most sportsbooks have installed the Blackhawks as $1.95 home favorites (risk $195 to win $100) with the total getting adjusted to six.

The Flyers have gone just 6-6 in their last 12 games as road pups after a game where they allowed six goals in the last game. But they did win three of their last five in this role. Philadelphia is 8-4 on the puck line (+1 ½-goals) in those contests as well. To take Philly to cover the spread, you’ll be laying $175 to win $100.

Chicago has been practically automatic this season when posted as a home “chalk” after a one-goal win, evidenced by a 10-1 mark but just 3-8 on the puck line (-1 ½-goals). The ‘over’ has hit in three of the Blackhawks last four games under these conditions.

The Blackhawks are 6-3 as home favorites during the playoffs. The ‘over’ is 4-3-2 in those games.

Philly is 5-5 in the 10 games they have played in the postseason as an underdog. The ‘over’ is 5-4-1 in this role. The Flyers have also covered the puck line in eight of those spots.

Game 2 of Stanley Cup sets the scene

Nervous netminders, unstable defense and a frantic pace led to the highest scoring Finals contest in 18 years as Chicago outlasted Philadelphia 6-5 in the opener. Here was the weird part, not one of the acknowledged scoring stars for either team put any rubber on the back of the net. If they find the range will the goaltenders will feel like they playing in the NHL All-Star where nobody plays defense or takes a hit?

For the Flyers, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne all came up empty. “I thought we had good looks. We just didn’t score and did everything but,” Richards said Sunday.

The Blackhawks trio of players, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Dustin Byfuglien, who have been domineering in the postseason, all took responsibility for their Game 1 actions. “I think all three of us know it’s not as much what they did as it was what we didn’t do on the ice,” Toews said.

Chicago might be 31-12 against good offensive teams scoring 2.85 or goals a game this season, but realize allowing five goals, let alone in the Stanley Cup Finals won’t lead to many victories.

“It was such a long week…… just to kind of treat it as just another game and we're playing hockey," Toews said Sunday. "But everyone knows what's at stake here, so it's tough not to get excited about it.”

I think both teams maybe realized that maybe a little bit too much last night. You could definitely see that there was definitely some jitters early on."

The Hawks were efficient in chasing Philly goalie Michael Leighton, scoring five times on 20 shots. With a day to ****** the situation, both teams understand they have to play better defense and settle in.

"I think tomorrow's going to be a better game from our side and I think Philly's going to play better too, so it's probably going to be a pretty good game tomorrow, but I don't think it's going to be high-scoring," predicted Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson.

All the talk of holding serve and winning on home ice to force a game seven is nonsense, as teams down 2-0 in the Cup Finals end up winning less than 13 percent of the time.

"Well, I look at it as an opportunity to steal home ice and tomorrow's not a do-or-die situation by any means," said Flyers defenseman Matt Carle. "Win or lose, we're going to be ready to go for Game 3 back in our barn, but we certainly want to try and steal home ice and that's the objective." Philadelphia has won eight of last 10 and is 7-1 with one day between games.

"Every loss is big in the playoffs. I'm not going to lie about that," said Danny Briere, who was outstanding in opener with four points. "But at the same time, coming in, everybody was talking how good the Blackhawks were. And not too many people -- I haven't heard anybody giving us a chance to win this series.

"What I liked is, [Saturday] night; we proved we belong with them. You know, maybe not to all the hockey experts, but in our room, I think we realize we can play and we can stretch the series and definitely come back in it."

Though Game 1 was fun and entertaining, a truer read on each team will be given Monday evening. Are the Blackhawks as good as many said coming into the series or does the Flyers grit and uncompromising determination matter more?

Sportsbook.com has Chicago as -190 money line favorite with total U6 and they are 18-3 and 15-6 OVER off a home win scoring four or more goals this season. Philadelphia has lost 11 of 16 as a road underdog since Jan 16 and is 5-0 UNDER as the visitor after a road game where both teams score three or more goals this campaign.

The second confrontation of the Finals has an 8:00 start on NBC.
